Root and tethering - Droid Eris General

Question. I see all these guides for 1.5 to 2.1 rooting, but my eris is currently on 2.1 from the OTA update. How do I root? Also, I don't want all the bells and whistles of roms, I just want the wifi tethering app (and to install whatever kernel is necessary). Anyway I could do that?

Power up in to hboot using Call Button + End Call Button (power) while its powered off. Post your hboot version here please.

Just install PDANet, it's free in the marketplace.

I would like wifi tethering.

Install Ivan's Eris_Official ROM. I did and I could have handed my phone to my wife and she'd have known nothing was any different than her Eris. It does include some "bells and whistles" but you don't have to use them. It does include WiFi Tethering.

but were you on 2.1??? did you have to root (i would think so?)? how did you install that rom?

You cannot root your phone if you have OTA 2.1
Furthermore you do not need root status to get wifi tethering. A few posts up I posted a link to a page for an app that allows you to tether. I have used it without issue a few times already.

frankspin, that is wrong. He absolutely can root his phone even though he is on ota 2.1. Just follow the same guide and you will be good to go.

Just follow the 1.5 to 2.1 Guide. It is exactly the same process.
Because the OTA doesn't upgrade certain things, you can still root JUST THE SAME as if you were on Android 1.5. No worries.
And definitely seek out Ivan's Eris_Official ROM. I always come back to it. 100% stable, stock looking, stock feeling, slightly optimized, and no bugs that I can find. At all. 100% functional.

My apologies I was under the impression the only way to root was from stock 1.5

You're SOL

Why? Shouldn't it be the same as the OTA?

Basically, everything except the bootloader is the same between the official OTA from VZW and the leaked updates.

I read on a different thread that if I had hboot 1.49 S-OFF then I could get root.

Well go nag them? I've read everywhere that you're SOL too.

Best way to Root MR2
I instlled MR2 Full Ruu works great but i really miss being rooted
I would think the original roll back root method is not going to work
since the radio has to be flashed sepreate for the rooted MR2
So hopefully there is work on a way to root MR2
Note so far it works well my intial install was a little quarky so i hardreset twice that seemed to clear up the quarkiness
works grea tnow just need to debloat .....
Why didn't you root before hand or if you were rooted why didnt you install a rom for rooted users based on the ruu?

As for installng a rooted rom i would prefer a clean install first to make sure the radio and all firmware install correctly -- and I perfer not to install a rom with no radio and a tweaked kernel.
If you notice the plain jane looks plain but by it desription it is -- it has a tweak kernel and no radio.
id actually like to know this as well, i just bought another TB off of craigslist that had the MR2.
he sold it to me cause he didnt know how to root it.
id like to root it or even down grade it back to a older version so i can then root it, i tried to run a vzw ruu and it didnt take
I imagine you would follow the regular root procedure jcase and team andirc has out in this forum. Then the last step instead of flashing the rooted mr1 ruu, you'd flash the rooted mr2 ruu once its out...

Well just a FYI to save you the trouble next time, what you're doing makes absolutely no sense and isn't offering you any extra "safety"
As for how to root or downgrade, you're out of luck at the moment.
I think perhaps you do not understand the root process we users follow. No common user on XDA has rooted their own ThunderBolt. We have installed the stock ROM modified by jcase. If you rooted following jcase's method, or any automated method based on that, then you have essentially installed plain jane, modified kernel is required for root, and root is useless without the added busybox and SuperUser. Also if you read the plain jane release page there is a link to the MR2 radio. So unless you have the know how to mod android yourself, you cannot root your own device.

[Q] Rooting after MR2 Update

I unrooted and installed the MR2 update. I'm now wondering if it's possible to root once again as I'd like to try out perfect storm 1.5. I've used the root/unroot method many times and am not sure if that still works with while stock with the MR2 on froyo.....
My guess is the devs will release the root method after officail release so they won't plug the whole

Ouch... you could have simply installed the rooted version of the software and saved yourself a great deal of headaches.
I wonder why you would root and unroot "many" times? When you are rooted you can bounce around from rom to rom all you like or do anything else you like.... You can switch radios to whatever you want....
Why do you want to unroot at all? (unless you need to take the phone to Verizon for some reason)

[Q] I Just Got My Thunderbolt Today. Will i be able to root?

Apparently, there is a new auto root for Thunderbolt which should work on your device.
The bricks were unrelated to software, they were hardware defects.

Exactly ! Miss a space in between two characters or digits ? It won't work.... Add two spaces when it should be one space ? It won't work.... Seems to really trip up anyone without command-line (old DOS or *nix) experience !

[Q] OTA Update For 16GB Flyer with S-OFF/CWM/ROOT

Hi all,
I have rooted and S-OFFed my 16 GB Flyer using Revolutionary and I'm currently on 2.3.4.
I just noticed that there is an OTA Update available for 3.2.
Can i run this without an issue, or do I have to restore the flyer to stock to flash the OTA?
thanks,
i dont think it will run and you need to go to stock for ota update.

thanks, I thought as much.
every time I read through the threads on returning to stock I just don't understand it fully.
The main thing I am having issue with is understand what the RUU is and how I know what one to use.
I have a UK 16GB Wifi only
as you are s-off and rooted you could upgrade to a custom 3.2 rom. i did it a couple of days ago and im happy with it. I also have a 16gb uk flyer.

i followed GLOBATRON's guide to upgrade to HC which is very straight forward
I think that is what is tripping me up.
So, all I have to do is download the RUU for the 16GB,
as I'm on GB with Revolutionary S-OFF and CWM i just run the executable?
does the Flyer need to be connected to the PC? does it have to be in a certain mode?
sorry for the questions, I've come from rooting on Galaxy S2 and this seems far more complicated.

need to be connected via usb, i put debugging mode on. run the.exe. it will reboot the flyer into fastboot and flash it. if you download the full one it will be stock with root and s-off if you want, you can then reboot into recovery and flash the custom rom
excellent, thanks for your help.

glad all worked out ok. you might what to flash the LeeDrOiD Flyer HC V2.1.0 - 2.6.35.14 KERNEL it has some fixes in there too. just drop it on SD card and install .zip in recovery
Note from Globatron on HC OTA updates for S-OFF users.
It is possible, but not the simplest of options to upgrade with S-OFF.

Noob Question
I may be posting this in the wrong thread, but this is the closest match I could find, since I am a new member and unable to post in the development threads.
I would like to start off by thanking all the devs who have worked so hard on development issues with the Flyer, I intend on donating to them as soon as I am able, as I think everyone who has benefitted should. With that said, please forgive me if this has been covered. I have read pretty much all the threads/posts on these issues and used the search function, but I tend to get somewhat confused by the high volume of information provided and wanted some verification before I go down this road.
I have a BB Wi-Fi 16 GB Flyer (HTC_Flyer_P512_NA). I have run Revolutionary to get S-OFF, installed CWM, and rooted, but still on stock GB 2.3.4; I am now at Software Version 2.27.1540.32, HBOOT Version 6.10.1002, Kernel version 2.6.35.10. I would now like to give HC a try, but not lose root. I would like to start off with stock HC and have the ability to try out some of the custom ROMs. I would also like the ability to go back to GB, if desired.
Here is what I have gleaned so far:
1) I should be able to run Globatron’s method from post #1 of this thread ([Guide][Flyer]Honeycomb S-OFF, Easy Install, Recovery and Root. [US Wifi Added]), starting at step 2, for updating to honeycomb and retaining root.
2) After this, I should have the ability to flash custom HC ROMs.
3) From there, I should have the ability to go back to stock HC, keeping S-OFF and root.
4) Using the procedure in post #3 of this thread ([Guide][Flyer]Honeycomb S-OFF, Easy Install, Recovery and Root. [US Wifi Added]) will take me back to GB with S-OFF and CWM.
5) From GB with S-OFF and CWM, I can go completely back to stock GB with S-ON using this procedure: [Guide][Flyer+View] How to return to S-ON after running revolutionary].
If/where I am wrong about any of the above, could someone kindly point out where and how I am wrong? Assuming all of the above is correct, I have a couple of questions:
• Will I lose my data using Globatron’s method in post #1?
• Although Globatron strongly recommends method 1, I would like to use method 2 because it seems more straight-forward for a noob like me. Is this a bad idea?
Yes, I am a noob (BTW, I hate that word, but I do fall into that category), but I don’t exactly hate myself. Please don’t be hating on me either, even though I am sure that some, or all, of these questions have already been answered. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Root HTC One M7 from Android 4.4.2?

Android 4.4.2

Software 5.14. 531.1
Main reason I want to root is to get tethering to work. After this update, EasyTether stopped working and it doesn't look like there is a solution in the near future. So ultimately, getting tethering to work is my main goal, here.

I am currently running your version just rooted. I have root, custom recovery and stock rom. I think you may be referring to S-OFF, and the methods to achieve S-OFF has been somewhat hboot version dependent. My understanding there are now methods to achieve S-OFF even if your hboot is 1.5X. Whatever you decide, please read the threads/instructions completely and understand what you are doing each step of the way. Also, check the HTC One thread because the procedures for your phone are pretty much the same as Developers Edition and International phones.
Great, thanks. One last thing... Have you gotten tethering to work? That's the only reason I'm considering this.
