[Q] Root HTC One M7 from Android 4.4.2? - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

I just updated to the latest software release, and I wanted to know if it can be rooted? He's my info:
HTC One M7
T-Mobile
Android 4.4.2
Sense 6.0
Software 5.14. 531.1
Main reason I want to root is to get tethering to work. After this update, EasyTether stopped working and it doesn't look like there is a solution in the near future. So ultimately, getting tethering to work is my main goal, here.

Thanks for the links! Only reason I'm confused is that, I always understood that the root process depends on the software version you are running... Is that no longer the case or something? I just really don't want to mess anything up...

I am currently running your version just rooted. I have root, custom recovery and stock rom. I think you may be referring to S-OFF, and the methods to achieve S-OFF has been somewhat hboot version dependent. My understanding there are now methods to achieve S-OFF even if your hboot is 1.5X. Whatever you decide, please read the threads/instructions completely and understand what you are doing each step of the way. Also, check the HTC One thread because the procedures for your phone are pretty much the same as Developers Edition and International phones.

Great, thanks. One last thing... Have you gotten tethering to work? That's the only reason I'm considering this.

The mobile hot spot works just fine here. I am having issues with bluetooth drivers on my computer so I can not check it. The phone comes up alright and it is waiting on the computer. If I can resolve the issues I'll let you know.

Root and tethering

Question. I see all these guides for 1.5 to 2.1 rooting, but my eris is currently on 2.1 from the OTA update. How do I root? Also, I don't want all the bells and whistles of roms, I just want the wifi tethering app (and to install whatever kernel is necessary). Anyway I could do that?

Power up in to hboot using Call Button + End Call Button (power) while its powered off. Post your hboot version here please.
1.46.0000
blah blah blah more characters
Just install PDANet, it's free in the marketplace.

I would like wifi tethering.
Install Ivan's Eris_Official ROM. I did and I could have handed my phone to my wife and she'd have known nothing was any different than her Eris. It does include some "bells and whistles" but you don't have to use them. It does include WiFi Tethering.
but were you on 2.1??? did you have to root (i would think so?)? how did you install that rom?

You cannot root your phone if you have OTA 2.1
Furthermore you do not need root status to get wifi tethering. A few posts up I posted a link to a page for an app that allows you to tether. I have used it without issue a few times already.

frankspin, that is wrong. He absolutely can root his phone even though he is on ota 2.1. Just follow the same guide and you will be good to go.

Just follow the 1.5 to 2.1 Guide. It is exactly the same process.
Because the OTA doesn't upgrade certain things, you can still root JUST THE SAME as if you were on Android 1.5. No worries.
And definitely seek out Ivan's Eris_Official ROM. I always come back to it. 100% stable, stock looking, stock feeling, slightly optimized, and no bugs that I can find. At all. 100% functional.
My apologies I was under the impression the only way to root was from stock 1.5

You're SOL
Why? Shouldn't it be the same as the OTA?
Basically, everything except the bootloader is the same between the official OTA from VZW and the leaked updates.
I read on a different thread that if I had hboot 1.49 S-OFF then I could get root.
Well go nag them? I've read everywhere that you're SOL too.

Apparently, there is a new auto root for Thunderbolt which should work on your device.
The bricks were unrelated to software, they were hardware defects.

Exactly ! Miss a space in between two characters or digits ? It won't work.... Add two spaces when it should be one space ? It won't work.... Seems to really trip up anyone without command-line (old DOS or *nix) experience !

Use the manual method in JCase's tutorial for sure. I did hear that the unrevoked team was close to a 1 step, but not released afaik.

[Q] Updating RUU questions

For the past two-three weeks, possibly longer, I noticed that I no longer have mobile data unless reboot my phone while not connected to Wi-Fi. It seems the phones doesn't want to find data after leaving Wi-Fi ranges. I've tried different ROMs and tried out new Kernels -- Nothing seems to correct this. I'm wanting to to try and update my RUU since I saw that someone was able to correct this issue by doing it.
I'm running HBoot 1.9 and 3.16
I've read up on Rum Rummer and ViperRUU -- and still unsure which I should use and really, how to. I'm just wanting to update the phone and radios and then re-flash a ROM to see if the issue resolved.
Any help will be greatful. If there's a how-to listed anywhere, sorry. but if you could lmgty, it would be greatly appreciated.

You didn't mention anything about what firmware version you're on, what ROM (or ROM's) you've tried. This could be very useful in helping track down your issue.
Typically, RUU isn't necessary unless you booger up a partition, or want to get your phone back to a relatively stock state. It stands for ROM Upgrade Utility or Repair Upgrade Utility.
Rumrunner is for gaining S-off with the newest OTA update. Not the same as VipeRUU.

Still need to know your firmware version. Go to Menu>Settings>About Phone>Software Info>More and list your baseband (firmware) version. As far as data issues, some AOSP ROM's are known for them (mostly older builds). The newer AOSP ROM's seem to have the issue more or less fixed. Do you have data issues with Sense ROM's or AOSP ROM's, or both?

I just flashed Viper to test with Sense based ROM, but still the same. If I walk out the house/work, it won't regain mobile data until I reboot or reconnect to wi-fi.
You have a rom suggestion I should try? I'll give a shot.

Could be an issue with the Sprint connections optimizer (which I don't use). You're a couple of firmware versions behind, also. If you're not S-off, I recommend you do so and update your firmware to the latest version. You can use Facepalm to get S-off in less than five minutes time. Are you by chance using a custom kernel with Viper? I've run Viper before and never encountered data issues. Do you only have data issues in and around your house, or do you have data issues in general?

Yeah, I'm S-Off currently. I'll have look into updating firmware, searching now. As far as the data issue. It's everywhere. The only fix I've noticed is either turn off wi-fi completely or reboot after I've lost wi-fi signal. For example, right now I'm connected to my home wi-fi, if I leave the house, it won't use cell data unless I reboot. But also, if I disable wireless and reboot while in my house, I'll get cell data. It seems it never kicks off to cell data when wi-fi lost.

Strange
I'd definitely look into updating your firmware. If the issue persists afterwards, you may need to use VipeRUU to go back completely stock, and if the issue is still there, you most likely have a hardware problem and need to get your device replaced.

backup and root

I have a htc m8 on at&t. I've been thinking of rooting my phone. I do have a warranty on the phone and I don't wanna void that. Is there a guide on here (for super NOOBS like myself) on how to create a back up and how to root?

Indeed there is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265618
but if you really dont feel comfortable with doing this stuff, by all means don't. Some things (S-off for instance, which is required to flash upgraded firmwares not specific to your carrier branded device) have a high potential to turn your new toy into a paperweight if done incorrectly. Just read up, follow the instructions to the letter, and come back here with questions. Most of the time someone will be nice enough to assist you

I do wanna root just so I can get rid of this app that's keeping my phone awake. I've read about the sunshine root. Some of the stuff I read is a bit confusing. On the website it says that the update won't require towelroot (is that the right term?) for me to be able to use sunshine. But in here it says that I need to root my device before using it.

You need to slow down, as it seems that you are rushing ahead with very little understanding of what you are doing. I recommend any newcomer (even experienced HTC users) to this phone spend at least a couple hours reading and learning before doing any mods to the phone. If a total n00b to Android, root, etc. then more time should be taken to research and learn. Reading includes the sticky threads, basic guides, and also my Index thread has a lot of information organized: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432
Sunshine is an s-off method, not root.
If you unlocked the bootloader, all you need to root is flash SU/SuperSU or a rooted ROM. S-off is not required for root.
Backing up the stock ROM, recovery, etc. is not required for the AT&T version, as you can RUU back to stock.
Also, AT&T (directly through them, not HTC) will only void your warranty for physical or water damage; not for mods.
I read some more and I rooted my phone already. Thanks for the link

Redpoint is 100% correct. If this all seems foreign to you, or anyone else for that matter, research, research then research some more! Before I do ANYTHING that I haven't done in the past (hell I have flashed many firmwares and it STILL scares me), I do alot of reading and see if its something I really want to do, plus it will help prevent me from coming back and saying "Halp, my phone is a brick now!". Once I have a basic understanding to it, then I go on

Personally I use ARHD 10.2, Its as close to stock as any other, but I have been using Mikes roms since my M7. Decent actually. I do run ALOT of stuff all the time, plus texts,,videos...gps...so for what I all use on it, it works great!
It is not closest to stock out there, it is closest to stock EURO build out correct, but not closest to AT&T stock out...just sayin

Personally I use ARHD 10.2, Its as close to stock as any other, but I have been using Mikes roms since my M7. In order to use it without any of the annoying boot bugs etc, you will have to flash a new firmware but that is one I would recommend, but also read up on firmware flashing and the steps to do it properly

dunno if its just EURO, but since ATT lags behind in updates, and Mike keeps his updated with whatever releases are out, its my preferred one to use
I like how all the bloat is removed, regardless if its a WWE or US based rom
There is a debloated ATT 4.4.3 build thats tailored to AT&T already in the AT&T section. International section is not only place ROMS are released these days...

Better than ARHD?

[Q] Latest Android Version on AT&T HTC ONE?

Hi everyone I have an HTC One M8 from the AT&T network but don't have service so I won't be getting any OTA updates anymore. Would someone be kind enough to tell me what the latest version of Android on the AT&T HTC One is? I'll give you a big thanks button!
Also, when converting an AT&T HTC One M8 to GPE does that mean you can use it on any carrier since it is no longer AT&T? What are the advantages of having an HTC ONE M8 converted to GPE? Thank you!

I belive the latest version for the AT&T M8 is 4.4.2
If you convert to GPe you will still be locked to AT&T as flashing a rom does not unlock your device
The only advantages I could think of are faster updates, no bloat, and pure stock goodness
But keep in mind to convert to GPe you need S-Off and a unlocked bootloader. S-Off costs $25 from Sunshine.

Thank you for your response. I tried giving thanks but apparently I'm limited to 8 thanks per day.
You're not able to S-Off with Firewater anymore?

Yeah, apparently HTC patched that with a small update. I acctually used firewater and it worked for me. But then again, I never took a ota update. Maybe you should give it a shot.

Alright! Thank you so much! I'm going to see if it'll still work.
I would not attempt "conversion" to GPE build, theres been many many bricks caused from folks not knowing enough to do so,latest build from att is 2.23.502.3. Lollipop testing is starting soon for att variant soon...id hold off. Just my two cents.

It was stated elsewhere that HTC used 4 different patch methods, and even component changes to block firewater. So the only way to know for sure if firewater will work on your device, is to try it. Devices that came with older software are more likely to work with firewater; but trial and error is really the only way to know for certain.
Stock ROM and kernel are probably best, try it a few times, and if it works it works. If not, you need sunshine.

Thank you! Dang they really want that phone locked down don't they? lol
We need to have a fully open source phone not just in terms of software but also in terms of hardware.
Anyways, I will give a try and see if it works. Now, if you have a device that doesn't have the component changes couldn't you just flash the older stock ROM and kernal? In theory?
I will give a try and that way I know for sure if it works or not.

No. The changes are likely not to software/kernel, but rather to hboot (which you can't change with s-on).
They aren't going to implement a patch into software, which you can then easily just downgrade.

Yes, I know it may be disappoint to hear. But unless you have specific knowledge as a dev; most folks aren't going to "luckily" think of a way to s-off the phone that has already been tried (and failed).
