Question. I see all these guides for 1.5 to 2.1 rooting, but my eris is currently on 2.1 from the OTA update. How do I root? Also, I don't want all the bells and whistles of roms, I just want the wifi tethering app (and to install whatever kernel is necessary). Anyway I could do that?

Just install PDANet, it's free in the marketplace.

I would like wifi tethering.
Install Ivan's Eris_Official ROM. I did and I could have handed my phone to my wife and she'd have known nothing was any different than her Eris. It does include some "bells and whistles" but you don't have to use them. It does include WiFi Tethering.
but were you on 2.1??? did you have to root (i would think so?)? how did you install that rom?

You cannot root your phone if you have OTA 2.1
Furthermore you do not need root status to get wifi tethering. A few posts up I posted a link to a page for an app that allows you to tether. I have used it without issue a few times already.

frankspin, that is wrong. He absolutely can root his phone even though he is on ota 2.1. Just follow the same guide and you will be good to go.

Just follow the 1.5 to 2.1 Guide. It is exactly the same process.
Because the OTA doesn't upgrade certain things, you can still root JUST THE SAME as if you were on Android 1.5. No worries.
And definitely seek out Ivan's Eris_Official ROM. I always come back to it. 100% stable, stock looking, stock feeling, slightly optimized, and no bugs that I can find. At all. 100% functional.
My apologies I was under the impression the only way to root was from stock 1.5

You're SOL
Why? Shouldn't it be the same as the OTA?
Basically, everything except the bootloader is the same between the official OTA from VZW and the leaked updates.
I read on a different thread that if I had hboot 1.49 S-OFF then I could get root.
Well go nag them? I've read everywhere that you're SOL too.
Is it possible to reload the stock OS, but keep Root?
On xda-developers website they have the Easy Root tutorial that does just what your asking.
Im keeping mine stock with root as well, I love Sense so I see no reason to change.

You will be rooted and already be on the stock release. Thats what im on now.
Im not sure about the one click methods..
thanks for the reply guys... I rooted, and installed a ROM. I dig the ROM, but wanted to go back to stock ROM to do some tweaks (or attempt at least, lol) myself and see how I do.
If I am not mistaken a RUU will remove root, right? Just wondering if there is a
PG05IMG.zip that is stock, but won't remove root...

Did you make a backup after you gained root but before you installed the rom? If so just nand back to that and you will have stock root. If not I would suggest remove root and redoing it so you can make a backup, then go from there.

Isn't the RUU in that thread a downgrade? I understand that must be flashed to gain root?, my question is after root can I flash back to the latest RUU and keep root??
If not what is missing from the RUU in that thread vs. the latest RUU?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000448
it is stock and rooted and deodexed(for easy modding if you want in the future) comes in bloat free or bloat(and remove what you want)
flash it in clockwork recovery, this is what i use.
Cool...This i am going to try out. :-D Thanks!

It downgrades to get the phone rooted but when you put the final zip for it to update, it updates to the stock release with root. Im running the .06 version and did nothing but root it.
Hi, I updated ota to android 2.3.3 for my evo 4g. I'm a noob so bear with me. I'm unimpressed with 2.3.3 and I want to install the kingdom revolution sense 3.0 rom. From my understanding, the first step is to root. However, it seems that there isn't any root available for this software update. Is there anything I can do besides wait for possibly unrevoked 3 to be updated? I also need to install amon ra so that I can install the rom. If my thought process isn't right please correct me. I've never tried modding my phone before. Thanks.
bump bump. can i get an answer here??

Alright thanks man. I'll be on the lookout.
Same situation here. Been meaning to root for a while but didn't start digging until this week after I had already taken the OTA gingerbread update.
Been asking in #unrevokedtest on freenode, nothing yet. Hopefully they get this going.
I got a replacement evo with 2.3.3 PRE INSTALLED when they said they re-called the 2.3.3 update and not to update it was pre installed so im either waiting for a new root also or till my 3d evo comes on the 24 I was order number 1

Is it even possible to be s off without of rooted before?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
My Evo was rooted ising unrevoked3 + unrevoked forever. When i updated OTA to GB 2.3.3. I first had to unroot my evo,but i didnt use the s-on patch bcuz i thought that as long as i was s-off i could root my device.again once updated, but the only thing it did was make it so i could roll back to 2.2. So my Evo is using the official GB 2.3.3 update & is S-off. Ive tried every root method i can think of,including GingerBreak, which did qork on a few other devices. Since i can still rollback to 2.2, i can stkll flash other GB roms, but i like Sense too much, its one reason i like HTC devices. If anyone knows how to root the evo with 2.3.3 with s-off please post for everyone like me. This is the.first time unrevoked hasnt been able to.root my evo aftr an OTA update, but the past updates were still uaing 2.2.
I also havnt heard of a recall on the GB Evo update. A Sprint rep told me that the evo will most likely get the update to 2.3.4,but he hasnt heard of a recall. He said the netflix app should be working again within 3-6 weeks from the update.
Any word why the update has been recalled. Evrythings been workin for me,xcept when using talk-to-text for sms msgs. It seems almost as stable as the final 2.2 update. The first 2.2 froyo version on the evo had mor bigs/glitches than the current 2.3.3 update. It would be nice if they reissued/resent a new GB update making the talk-to-text work perfect again. It works most the time,& wen it does work its faster & more accurate than before on 2.2, but every now & then i hav to yell, but turning off fast-boot & a simple off/on reset evry mornin & my evo runs good on 2.3.3. Id just like to know why the recall. So if someone still running froyo tries to update OTA that the update has been pulled,& it wont update?.Its no longer available then?
i have the same thing lbcary.. running GB 2.3.3 with s-off, gingerbreak doesnt work on my evo.. i could go back to 2.2 but i dont wont too.. and i have a mac not a pc.. but im using a pc to run autoroot but there is no update for autoroot yet.. is there anyway to root my evo when i already have s-off on the 2.3.3 GB?

is this true? can anyone confirm?
The two guys running gingerbread with s-off. Roll back to 2.2, root and install custom recovery ( clockworkmod) and then install the rooted stock 2.3rom through clockwork mod. It is the same as ota update, but rooted already.
And in the future just wait a couple of hours,a rooted version of an ota update is ussally available same day. Just install the zip like any other rom and if you are going from a stock rom to stock rom you dont have to wipe data, I have done it that way each time and never had a problem, just wipe cache.

Best way to Root MR2
I instlled MR2 Full Ruu works great but i really miss being rooted
I would think the original roll back root method is not going to work
since the radio has to be flashed sepreate for the rooted MR2
So hopefully there is work on a way to root MR2
Note so far it works well my intial install was a little quarky so i hardreset twice that seemed to clear up the quarkiness
works grea tnow just need to debloat .....
Why didn't you root before hand or if you were rooted why didnt you install a rom for rooted users based on the ruu?

As for installng a rooted rom i would prefer a clean install first to make sure the radio and all firmware install correctly -- and I perfer not to install a rom with no radio and a tweaked kernel.
If you notice the plain jane looks plain but by it desription it is -- it has a tweak kernel and no radio.
id actually like to know this as well, i just bought another TB off of craigslist that had the MR2.
he sold it to me cause he didnt know how to root it.
id like to root it or even down grade it back to a older version so i can then root it, i tried to run a vzw ruu and it didnt take
I imagine you would follow the regular root procedure jcase and team andirc has out in this forum. Then the last step instead of flashing the rooted mr1 ruu, you'd flash the rooted mr2 ruu once its out...

Well just a FYI to save you the trouble next time, what you're doing makes absolutely no sense and isn't offering you any extra "safety"
As for how to root or downgrade, you're out of luck at the moment.
I think perhaps you do not understand the root process we users follow. No common user on XDA has rooted their own ThunderBolt. We have installed the stock ROM modified by jcase. If you rooted following jcase's method, or any automated method based on that, then you have essentially installed plain jane, modified kernel is required for root, and root is useless without the added busybox and SuperUser. Also if you read the plain jane release page there is a link to the MR2 radio. So unless you have the know how to mod android yourself, you cannot root your own device.
Well i just got my thunerbolt today and im loving it . i want to root my thunderbolt, will the root method posted by jcase work ?
Here is the software info for my phone
Android 2.2.1
Baseband- 1.39.00.0627r,0.01.69.0625r
Kernal - 2.6.32.21
Build - 1.70.605.0 CL343953
Software Number - 1.70.605.0
So will i be able to root using that method because it says "This guide has been updated to MR1/OTA Firmware 1.13.605.7" can anyone confirm this working for 1.70.605.0?
and 1 more question if i do root im gonna flash a gingerbread rom and you have to flash a new radio. can someone give me a radio cause i dont know what radio to flash (preferably one thats not leaked) im hearing of people bricking there phones using the MR2 Radio and im scared of bricking my phone since i just got it. should i flash the 2.5 radio or it dont make a difference?
THANKS And anyone have tips for rooting? im new to manual rooting. my previous phone was an htc incredible and i used unrevoked which was an automated root.

Apparently, there is a new auto root for Thunderbolt which should work on your device.
The bricks were unrelated to software, they were hardware defects.

Exactly ! Miss a space in between two characters or digits ? It won't work.... Add two spaces when it should be one space ? It won't work.... Seems to really trip up anyone without command-line (old DOS or *nix) experience !
