This is just a quick idea I was playing with. I'm thinking about building a Rom Manager for the Droid Eris, with custom recovery, options to boot to recovery, make and restore backups, flashing zips from SD, all the great stuff a recovery image does, but inside android.
How much would you pay for the ability to do that? Say there was a free version that only let you flash a stock, 2.1, rooted image, and a paid version with all the developers mods? What would you pay for this paid version?
By >$1 I mean less than one dollar!! Just so you know!
$2.00
If it can do everything
Requests:
- log viewer of what installed.
"If possible"
-ability to change skateboard boot image.
I wouldnt give you a penny for something I could do myself by powering the phone down first.

I would cough up $2-4, in fact I did for my droid. A rom manger was the best app i've purchased.

$2-4. I bought ROM Manager for my wife's Droid and it's awesome.
BTW ">$1" actually means greater than one dollar, (the mouth eats the larger value XD). Not pickin on ya, just sayin!
If it did all this with custom recovery, options to boot to recovery, make and restore backups, flashing zips from SD, all the great stuff a recovery image does, but inside android. without any problems. I would gladly pay 2-5$. Would make it switching and trying out different ROMs on the go easier.

Would certainly pay 3-5$ for that functionality on my Eris. Always enjoyed it on my Droid, and have been happy I paid for it.
rom manager...
I think it would be a good thing. Sure we can boot into recovery but its good to have options. I'm in the 2 to 5$ group.
valuable
Like someone mentioned before if this would do everything turn key I think it would be very valuable. This would also bring in more people that otherwise wouldn't attempt to do something like this on their own. If I was stuck with my stock Eris i would be pissed so I know how great it has been learning how to root my phone and install these roms and see what my eris is really capable of. This may seem small to some of you but I am not a technical person so it has been a great learning experience for me. Also, I struggle with the more technical aspects of this stuff (specifically app2sd) so if this service would take care of all of that and create the right settings that are necessary then I would be all for it.
What's wrong with the ROM Manager version I wrote? Does it not work on Eris? I don't have one, but I have gotten feedback it works. Unfortunately, I am not part of the Eris scene, so I don't add ROMs to it. Developers can get added for free if they want.

I use rom manger on my droid, even bought a licnese when I don't use advanced features. Works great.
I haven't used it on the eris, so I can't personally comment, but it's probably the lack of roms currently listed. Maybe we need to convince some ppl to add roms.
I have also heard a few issues with the recovery, but it could be pebcak (user) errors.

Hi zifnab06,
I looked at the current poll results
Code:
1 x 8 = 8
1.5 x 7 = 10.5
3.5 x 17 = 59.5
7.5 x 2 = 15
Total = $ 93
Woot, you've got an upside potential of almost 100 bucks!
Minimum wage goes to $8.25/hr on July 1. If you can do this in 12 hours of your time, you'll be making minimum wage. Either that, or you could go work three 4-hour shifts at the local MickeyD.
And if Walking Taco comes in while you are there to order a happy meal, you'll probably get more respect from him there, too.
I kid, I kid. I give advice here for free - I should go down there right now and see if they are hiring.
I'd say, take your considerable skills and write a commercial app for a slightly bigger market - friends don't let friends write code for minimum wage!

Hey everyone, I just ordered one of those refurb lapdocks for $99 USD ($28 shipping to alberta
And I was wondering What was the best rom to use for a good lapdock experience
im using bell 2.3.4 cwm zip right now, is there a better rom/ webtop combination to use then stock?
In all honesty, the lapdock experience was rather shoddily put together by Motorola in the first place. Most ROMs do not come pre-packaged with webtop for this reason. I'm not so sure how effective trying the webtop on custom ROMs is without owning a lapdock myself (yet). From my understanding, HDMI mirroring has been a viable option for many. I hope to own a lapdock soon in hopes of contributing to improving the experience.
Im going to be using it mostly for very light word pro, music movies/TV shows and light browsing, Do I need a full debian distro for that or can I use the android apps with the lapdock for that stuff?
In your case, I would test drive purely stock ROM first to establish what to expect of the webtop environment. I don't think you would run into any problems with what you are going to use it for, but should you find something missing you might want to explore custom alternatives.
Be aware that most kernels available lock the CPU at its maximum speed in the lapdock environment. I can't remember if faux123 fixed this in his stopgap kernel or not, but that is the only big issue that comes to mind with custom ROMs

Above configuration took a fair amount of trial and error to get stable and flawless, but I am thrilled with the result.

Posting the same question multiple times is against XDA rules.
Nothing has changed, or else there'd be a bunch of threads/posts about it. You still can't use native webtop (the modified ubuntu one) on anything but the original stock GB ROM.

I was hoping to get a reply from the 3 individuals who i had quoted, who have been in the same position as me in the past!
I was chatting on the #TWRP IRC with Tassadar, who came up with a mod for some Nexus devices to allow TWRP to manage multiple ROMs from within recovery, essentially a multiple boot option. This reminded me of Boot Manager, which was an app that allowed some older devices to run multiple ROMs, by storing versions of them on the SD card and switch between them with a simple reboot through the app.
Tassadar mentioned that his mod was ported to the HTC One, which can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2460886
I would like to know if it would be possible to port this amazing mod to our device as well. It seems a LOT is involved, and per Tassadar, some skills are needed which I do not currently possess. I do have my build box set up to build TWRP, so I can at least help on that end, but with the actual code, I don't have the know-how. Per Tassadar, this is what's needed:
Tassadar from #TWRP said:

He directed me to this page: https://github.com/Tasssadar/multirom/wiki/Porting-MultiROM
That's his guide for porting it. You'll notice one big shortcoming right off the bat, as it relates to our device: "It only supports devices with storage in /data/media/. Physical SD cards are not supported because of how slow and generally awful they are, but some devices have "fake" /sdcard on separate partition, which is not supported as of yet."
So, some definite coding adjustments will be necessary to get it working on our device with our non-emulated internal storage, or, for the very adventurous, external SD card.
I'm willing to coordinate the project if anyone has the skills necessary to help. So, please, if you're interested in this, let's make it happen!
Another option would be to update the Boot Manager app. The source for that is here: https://github.com/init2winitapps/BootManager
Wooooow, will definitely steady, so remember evo3d, but unfortunately since to ics, are not supported,..because the dev busy.,cool
hopefully soon realized

I have been running this on my Nexus 7 for a couple months. its really nice to have as I test and flash ROMs all the time without having to mess with my daily. You do have to install a custom version of TRWP so that it has the advanced section with the multirom items in it so that you can wipe and flash the second rom without disturbing the "internal" rom (main rom). There is also a multirom app that can que and add roms from within the OS. It will also install Ubuntu touch as the second rom.
I miss boot manager too bad I know nothing about how to update this! Good luck guys!!!

So...I just got an Android ~5 days ago. My friend told me to root the phone and get plain Android on it instead of HTC's bloated modified version of it. I'm not a newbie to SSH and managing linux via prompt (I assume rooting the phone is what that means?..) Anyway, I have no clue what I'm doing. I've been an iPhone user for...~2 years. I'm completely new to Android.
Can anyone start me on the right path, maybe give me some explanations as to what I'm actually doing? Does this void my warranty with Best Buy (probably...jailbreaking the iPhone does, but recovering from that is easy-peezy..)
I'd like to tinker with my phone, but it seems so much more complicated to fix the phone if I make an oops than doing so with an iPhone does.
Thanks in advance.
Assuming you have the DNA, as that is the section you are in, there is quite a few helpful threads already. Check the sticky posts, they usually link to helpful threads.
With the speed of the quad core phones, debloating isn't needed as much as before, but rooting does have it's ups and downs.
I found that AOSP (pure android) based roms compared to sense (HTC software) are a little mote buggy and not as fluid. They feel snappier, but really aren't.
Try some sense based roms before going full aosp on this device. Take it from me. My old devices, I would run only AOSP, but after usi.g sense 5 on this phone, it has so.e good HTC only features.
Sent from my DNA using my mind.
I'll echo Uzephi, give sense a try first. If you really want to tinker make sure to make a nandroid in recovery. You will probably need to use either moonshine or rum runner to do what's called s-off your phone first. That will also root it. I've found the easiest way to do that is to boot to a live USB Linux, then you don't have to deal with driver issues. If you have windows 8 or 8.1 64 bit there have been fastboot issues with drivers seeing the phone for some users, myself included. Give us some more info on what your PC set up and phone OS versions are and we can help some more when and if you want. Have you gotten the latest OTAs.

Android 4.2 is the base operating system and HTC customized it to their liking, which they call Sense, and you have version 5 of Sense.

Android phone manufacturers like to give their phones a specific look and feel, which is why android phones can look so different. This modification/augmentation of the base android software environment is commonly referred to as a UI (user interface), or Skin.
The term 'skin' is a terrible over-simplification, but it gets the point across. The vanilla Android software environment is, for many, quite boring, and not as powerful as it can be. Companies like HTC and Samsung incorporate cool animations, graphics, and sounds effects, as well as software that takes advantage of their camera's capabilities.
HTC's UI is called Sense
Samsung's is called TouchWiz Motorola's used to be called Blur (don't know if it still is)

If you're brand new to Android, I would just use the phone as it is now without rooting or putting a custom ROM on it. Once you're comfortable and familiar with Android then you can decided if you want to root and rom.

Rooting is akin to jailbreak, gaining control of your phone. You can root your phone (get root directory access) and still remain completely stock for your Rom.
I personally have had the best experience with sense based roms. Your experience may differ depending on what you use.
If you want to use mobile hotspot on your phone without paying subscription then rooting is a must.
Linux used to be a must to root. Now there are windows based options, I used moonshine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to pay extra to use your phone as a mobile hotspot if you're on a capped data plan. I think only unlimited data folks are expected to pay extra to use that feature.

Yes, correct, capped data is forbidden by law to charge for mobile hotspot, unlimited data is chargeable.
Edit* At OP, Sense is the king flavor of android, stick unrooted for a while as you won't really see a need for it yet, unless you want to go and throw on different ROM's and try them out, which in that case def. go and try viperDNA (best sense ROM avail.) AOSP/CM based ROM's are still a WIP and are ok to use but you will miss out on everything sense (sense apps, widgets, features, and even some hardware features)
Gaining root is becoming the sys admin of the phone, you would be able to read/write to the system partition of the phone and execute system privileged commands that are more for the hacker/modder/enthusiast (not normal user, you really wouldn't find a use for that type of stuff, the only app that would serve you good is "Titanium Backup" that does require root but it basically backs up all of the apps and their data)

Huawei is basically saying "you're on your own" to anyone who received a device as a devloper. That's not a great position... It's a pretty solid slap in the face. My first thought as a developer is "ok, they are out, why would I bother". I'd cut more slack if the device was 18-24 months old but they are pushing this as their flagship currently and an alternative to the more expensive phablets on the market. Even Samsung provides "reasonable" support for "old" flagships better than this.
The crazy thing is the hardware should be more than able to keep up with 4.4/5.0. Unless they are jumping right to 5.0 this move makes 0 sense to me.

I saw the blog post on my G+ feed earlier today. I'm not really shocked, but it still really feels like a kick in the teeth.
I'm not sure what kind of luck we'll have getting a custom KK/LP Rom running on this phone. Usually the manufacturer-provided ROM is used as a baseline for other modifications to be made. If we were to spin our own AOSP Rom, could we even find the drivers and kennel modules to make everything work?
Where do we go from here?

The kernel is up on one of the hosted Huawei sites. A quick once over at the BABBQ indicated it's a fairly vanilla Qualcomm 3.4 kernel with some Huawei bits sprinkled in. Shouldn't be much of an issue for 4.4. getting a 3.10 kernel up for 5.0 will be trickier and is a big question mark as 5.0 isn't officially released just yet. At the BABBQ we also discovered they didn't implement all of the modem modes in the ROM. Another developer told me they might take a closer look but gave no detail for timing.
I've been tinkering with adb backups, titanium and xposed lately and I'm not liking the stock ROM much. They omitted large chunks of the adb backup stuff rendering apps like Helium useless, the SD cards don't come through to the root context properly forcing you to enable a compatibility flag in SuperSU in order to make titanium work and apktool and other standard tools choke nicely on the system apks. I had to fall back to running the smali decompiler by hand to find the right hooks in SystemUI for a simple xposed hack.
Adding to the fun their version of Settings.apk is missing a number of standard features which you can only adjust via Tasker/SecureSettings or by hand behind the scenes. They also didn't implement encrypted storage in the vold storage stuff so you're screwed in an enterprise setting.
Based on what I've seen thus far a source based build is almost necessary if you want everything android has to offer. However, vetting a ROM to ensure various new functionality is 100% will be a pain.
Huawei left out a lot and the lack of 4.4 is a serious kick in the teeth.

You can use Huawei's Hi-Suite software to flash roms to phone from pc. You can also pack roms up into Huawei's update format and flash them in quick update mode from your phone's external sd card, or you can install via recovery.
I bought mine on September 29 (didn't get it until early October) through the gethuawei site. I wonder if I can return it... I'll find out when there livechat is live today, the 29th of October.
After just one minor OTA update they officially announce no additional updates for their only US device... That's a deal breaker for me.

Not surprised , saw this coming from the early start . Thing is , there is no alternative with these features / size at the 299$ price tag . There are phones like the ZTE nubia / moto g / Blu products / etc but they don't hold a candle to this phablet . On another note , I've customized my phone to the max and i don't need a major OS update . Just me , this phone runs perfectly for my use . Fine if they just push minor OS fixes via OTA . Developers can be our saviours ! Let's not forget this isn't really a flagship ! You're paying for the experience as created/intended at the time . Let's wait and see

Supporting my work:
I am a young student in an elite school struggling to pay the resultant hefty fees and juggle between my studies and development. A thanks button shows appreciation and really motivates me to go further. To go the extra mile, donating to me so that I won't have to worry as much about the fees and instead focus more on development will help me greatly too. Of course, you don't have to do anything. If you're a satisfied user of my kernel, I feel glad too.

zK Updater
This is the mobile updater for zwliew_Kernel. It supports auto-checking and auto-updating in a nicely designed package.

Your instructions say to flash the zip file, however, only a .img file is available, which isn't a problem as it can easily be flashed of course using something like Flashify but you might want to amend them. Thanks for the kernel.

Sorry, copy pasta from Moto X thread. Fixed. BTW, once the production release of zK Updater is out, it can auto-flash your kernels.
Downloaded fine using your app. One thing that I would suggest however is asking the user if they want to flash the kernel rather than it downloading and installing straight away followed by a reboot. I wanted to switch back to the stock kernel prior to installing this but because it auto flashed never had the chance. Apart from that it appears to be working fine despite having been installed over another non stock kernel.
One thing I have noticed since installing it is that your app no longer works and crashes out. Have cleared data and cache several times to no avail.

Did you install the latest production release, v1.1.1? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=zwliew.kernel If you are, please report the crash using the in-built Google crash report. Also, there is an option in the settings menu to disable auto-flashing.

Latest version installed and has sorted the issue thanks. Also seen the option to autoflash - not a problem now as its running your kernel of course!
What app do you recommend to tweak your Kernel with?
Thanks.
Comimg out of my 'retirement' to express my utter dismay that this 'developer' has taken the template for their application from the popular developer @Francisofranco and has utterly ripped off his work and branded it as his own. Don't beleive me? Check out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.franco.kernel Your developer is nothing but a fraudster without sufficent imagination or knowledge to make his own app. The only commands this guy knows is copy and paste. A cheap Asian rip off of the original high quality production. This one has the nasty made in Singapore etshed into the platic you cant remove without getting a file and sanding down your product. Do you want that to run your device? If so you are braver than me

Looks just like another Material inspired app to me, same as hundreds of others out there. Didn't realise that Franco had cornered the market with the design!! (and yes, I do have his paid app installed but don't use his kernels as I find them lacking in features - in fairness, I don't actually use his app as I prefer KControl or Faux.)

I don't think using Google's material design guidelines qualifies as a copy or ripoff.
I also own the paid version of FKU, but I can't see more than material design similarities.

With utmost respect for you, as we all should have for each other, if you came out of your "retirement" just to say that, you were better off retired mate. So much aggressiveness because of the app? Which isn't even is main development focus? Its just a "shortcut" to update the kernel. I respect you, I've seen you around and you seem like a good guy, but seriously mate, that wasn't cool :/

At first, I thought that the first version of the app ressembled a lot like the Franco's free FKU. (which was really the same thing only with a different color) I guess it was only used for a template. It then, with later updates, looked like it is a different app with its own implementations.
Looks like it was a rushed opinion to me on something not finished yet...
