Question on 2.1 OTA ROOT - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if this has been asked before, I looked briefly but could not find an answer...Im currently running 2.1 ROOT on my ERIS and my friend wants to ROOT his ERIS but he has the official 2.1 OTA running...
QUESTION: Can his phone with 2.1 OTA be ROOTED? If so so are the precedures and files the same as going from 1.5 to ROOT?

At this time, there is no way to root the 2.1 OTA or downgrade to 1.5.

when booting the phone from shutdown, hold down volume and end. the hboot screen should appear. if the hboot is 1.47 or lower or 1.49 s-off, you can root the phone normaly.

I have been rooted for a while but decided to downgrade back to 1.5 and get the ota. after I installed the ota I re-rooted.
It's posted everywhere, but I'll repeat it: If you have 1.5 and install the ota you can still flash the leaked rooted rom.

I guess I'm wrong - I'm used to "2.1 OTA" referring to the 3rd leak.

Now phones that you buy with the OTA have hboot 1.49 S-ON just like the third leak meaning no root.

I flashed the rooted leak as soon as it came out.
Then I did this just a few days ago and immediately received and installed the over the air update to 2.1 from vzw.
Of course I would not have done it had I not found this.

Leak 2.1 v1....rootable??

Ok...I have the 2.1 v1 leak. I've read in a few posts that I may be able to do the maual OTA 2.1 then be able to root. Is this true...or not? Most of the discussions are on v3 leak. I think it was in Android forums where I read that v1 has the old HBoot that was rootable. Is that correct or am I still screwed??

You're still screwed. You can't do the OTA update and you can't root. None of the leaks can.

Yep, he's correct. I'm also on leak v1 and I can tell you for a fact the it did change the hboot to 1.49. That makes it unrootable at this point in time. This has been said many times before, but it's worth mentioning again.
THE OTA UPDATE (whether manually installed or installed OTA from Verizon) DOES NOT TOUCH THE BOOTLOADER. IT DOES NOT UPGRADE IT, NOR WILL IT DOWNGRADE IT.
I wasn't yelling or anything above...just made it nice and big so it gets noticed easily and read. Also, leaks can't install the OTA update anyway, the phone just returns an error no matter how you try to install it..

Leak 2.1 v3 or Rooted?

I have the leaked 2.1 v3 does that mean i rooted my phone to put it on it? Is my phone now rooted?
No. Your phone is not rooted. Leaked v3 is essentially the same as the upgrade from Verizon.

yes

So NO custom ROMS for me...this sucks
Yep. You, me, and loads of others using the leaked versions. Not to worry though. the devs are working on rooting the leak for us. It may take some time so just be patient.

I'm hoping soon too, I just got a replacement with 2.1 and 1.49 hboot loaded because mine had trackball issue. The original was the same but thought I was going to get lucky with replacement. Guess I was wrong.

hang tight guys, devs are still working on root for leakers. they're looking at a couple attack vectors and will notify everyone once they've got something working

What exactly is it that makes you think you have leak-V3?
Check your bootloader version (power phone up holding Vol-down+End/Power).
If it says 1.47.xxxx (S-ON), you can root
if it says 1.49.xxxx (S-OFF), you have already rooted
if it says 1.49.xxxx (S-ON), you have put a "leak" (V1, V2, or V3) on your phone and can not root.
Then, reboot and look at Settings->About phone->Software information. If you put a leak on there, you should be able to decipher which one it was by looking at this post on Androidforums.com
Note that you can not tell the difference between the OTA-2.1 and Leak-V3 from the O/S software information alone - determine that by looking at the bootloader (HBOOT) Version number and security status (S-OFF vs. S-ON).

There is only a single 1.49 S-OFF bootloader "in the wild" - and it is from the ROOT ROM.
That does not mean that you must have a rooted OS on top of it - you can "root" the Eris, in the sense of installing that very bootloader (1.49 S-OFF), and then back-install any OS you like on top of it (manually).
For instance, I have had stock 1.5 running on my phone for experiments, but with the root (1.49 S-OFF) bootloader sitting there as the bootloader. The "O/S" is not "rooted" - but the bootloader is there which would allow me to write anything I want to the phone. So, calling that "not rooted" is semantically accurate - if you are only talking about the OS on top.
Having said that, there is not a single chance that you have 1.49 S-OFF on your phone without it having been touched by the root-PB00IMG.zip HTC ROM at one point or another in its past. Either that or you work for HTC.

Your phone has the 1.46 bootloader precisely because it is an "older" phone (in relative terms), and also because it has only seen OTAs in it's operating history - the OTA process for the Eris has never replaced the bootloader. (There have been 3 OTAs now, and none of them replace the bootloader.)
Good luck with the rooting!

Thank exactly what I needed to know.
Now off to root (screw up) my phone

Is it possible to take a OTA update while rooted?

Is it possible to take a OTA update while rooted? I am still on the stock Rom. And if so, will it unroot me?

Wrong!
You can take the update, it will unroot you, AND if the new update includes a new HBOOT it will flash over and give you a security warning and/or S-ON.
your best bet is to wait a few hours and someone will make a rooted version of the new ota... but chances are we will have the ota update weeks before it is ever pushed to any non rooted phones... at the moment .6 is stock.. and all the roms are .9 so all I"m waiting on is a new radio update to hopefully fix this wacky 3g signal I get

If it detects you are a lower version then the OTA it will still attempt to upgrade.
Ok. From what I understand, the OTA won't automatically install if I am rooted. Which is good. But if I wanted to I could force the OTA to install?
But from what some people in this thread say, it's not worth it, and I could just get a unrooted version of the OTA from here at some point?
Is that all correct?
I am only interested because I heard there was a big OTA coming on the 16th, and I expect that it will fix a bunch of random stuff on the TB. So I'd like to get it.
I'm pretty sure you need to have stock recovery installed to install the OTA. If using CWM it will not install.
Wow this is interesting...i flashed a new radio yesterday is this the new ota update.
jcase said he thinks the leaked ruu is supposed to be the first OTA.

[Q] Root for evo running 2.3.3

Hi, I updated ota to android 2.3.3 for my evo 4g. I'm a noob so bear with me. I'm unimpressed with 2.3.3 and I want to install the kingdom revolution sense 3.0 rom. From my understanding, the first step is to root. However, it seems that there isn't any root available for this software update. Is there anything I can do besides wait for possibly unrevoked 3 to be updated? I also need to install amon ra so that I can install the rom. If my thought process isn't right please correct me. I've never tried modding my phone before. Thanks.
bump bump. can i get an answer here??
Unless your S off you'll need to wait til a New root is released Im guessin weeks rather than days. Just keep an eye out when its releases it will be obvious

Alright thanks man. I'll be on the lookout.
Same situation here. Been meaning to root for a while but didn't start digging until this week after I had already taken the OTA gingerbread update.
Been asking in #unrevokedtest on freenode, nothing yet. Hopefully they get this going.
I got a replacement evo with 2.3.3 PRE INSTALLED when they said they re-called the 2.3.3 update and not to update it was pre installed so im either waiting for a new root also or till my 3d evo comes on the 24 I was order number 1

Is it even possible to be s off without of rooted before?

My Evo was rooted ising unrevoked3 + unrevoked forever. When i updated OTA to GB 2.3.3. I first had to unroot my evo,but i didnt use the s-on patch bcuz i thought that as long as i was s-off i could root my device.again once updated, but the only thing it did was make it so i could roll back to 2.2. So my Evo is using the official GB 2.3.3 update & is S-off. Ive tried every root method i can think of,including GingerBreak, which did qork on a few other devices. Since i can still rollback to 2.2, i can stkll flash other GB roms, but i like Sense too much, its one reason i like HTC devices. If anyone knows how to root the evo with 2.3.3 with s-off please post for everyone like me. This is the.first time unrevoked hasnt been able to.root my evo aftr an OTA update, but the past updates were still uaing 2.2.
I also havnt heard of a recall on the GB Evo update. A Sprint rep told me that the evo will most likely get the update to 2.3.4,but he hasnt heard of a recall. He said the netflix app should be working again within 3-6 weeks from the update.
Any word why the update has been recalled. Evrythings been workin for me,xcept when using talk-to-text for sms msgs. It seems almost as stable as the final 2.2 update. The first 2.2 froyo version on the evo had mor bigs/glitches than the current 2.3.3 update. It would be nice if they reissued/resent a new GB update making the talk-to-text work perfect again. It works most the time,& wen it does work its faster & more accurate than before on 2.2, but every now & then i hav to yell, but turning off fast-boot & a simple off/on reset evry mornin & my evo runs good on 2.3.3. Id just like to know why the recall. So if someone still running froyo tries to update OTA that the update has been pulled,& it wont update?.Its no longer available then?
i have the same thing lbcary.. running GB 2.3.3 with s-off, gingerbreak doesnt work on my evo.. i could go back to 2.2 but i dont wont too.. and i have a mac not a pc.. but im using a pc to run autoroot but there is no update for autoroot yet.. is there anyway to root my evo when i already have s-off on the 2.3.3 GB?

is this true? can anyone confirm?
The two guys running gingerbread with s-off. Roll back to 2.2, root and install custom recovery ( clockworkmod) and then install the rooted stock 2.3rom through clockwork mod. It is the same as ota update, but rooted already.
And in the future just wait a couple of hours,a rooted version of an ota update is ussally available same day. Just install the zip like any other rom and if you are going from a stock rom to stock rom you dont have to wipe data, I have done it that way each time and never had a problem, just wipe cache.

Rooted: official update consequences

So, what happens to a rooted phone when the official update to ics comes out? Will you be able to update through Verizon, or will a dev need to work on it first? I know there are some great ics roms out there already, but what if you wanted to try the stock update? My wife also has a rezound and she won't let me "mess" with hers.
Thanks!

use ruu and go back to stock for the update
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466474
go here and do #1~3
for #3, http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...5&postcount=58
go here and download and use this file
this one is the lastest stock ruu.
One of two options:
1. If you are already rooted, wait for a Dev to build a ROM based on the OTA so you can safely flash it.
2. You can unroot/relock your phone to accept the OTA update.
The problem with # 2 is the current methods to achieve root may not work on the updated software so it is possible to be stuck without root for awhile (unless someone finds a work-around).
The way I understand it is simple. You will be able to upgrade to a rooted is rom, however you will not be able to update the radios if you are s-on. I'm Gonna hold out. There will be an unlock tool after ics drops...whether same day or eventually.
A rooted version of the OTA rom will be released within a couple hours of the OTA.
