"Hello, my name is Jeff and I am a Flash-a-holic"
"Hello, Jeff" - The group says in unison.
So it all started about 8 months ago, when WM6 first came onto the scene, well not actually because it had not yet hit the streets and I was among the selected few (via this forum) in the world to have it up and working on their devices. I later learned that yet again I had a device that would not be among the chosen to receive the new and updated MS-OS, bummer. (Same with my Qtek 2020 not going to 2003SE and then to WM5)
Like many of out there, I have become a Flash-a-holic. I have flashed just about ANY and EVERY ROM out there for my Prophet at least about 100x's, looking for Ms. Right-ROM, heck I have even heard of others flashing ROMs from OTHER devices! Going back to official WM5s and living with its ugliness and slowness and just plain dullness... waiting.
Whether it is from Vietnam, Thailand or Russia - each and every release either b(this) or b(that) or TOUCH this or that - we are always told of how it is NEW and/or Improved - leading us to believe that we will FINALLY have a NICE and (above all) STABLE WM6 on our Prophet and STOP THE MADNESS, but helas after the proverbial "15 to 30 minutes depending on your CPU Speed" of anticipation we have the same as we did before flashing... same symptoms - I am sure that I don't need to list them here, they are ALL the same and surely directly linked to the fact that the image came from a totally different device (Wizard) and thus there are Incompatibilities.
What do we expect? What is it that we seek? I personally would like to have the most up-to-date OS on my device without the powers that be telling me that it is incompatible (purely a marketing decision) with all of the bells and whistles. I personally like the VoIP feature, which ALSO only works depending upon the flavor you flash to - guess ya can't have it all. Some things work in THIS one and not in THAT one... you all know where I am coming from.
So the quest continues on, Flash this and Flash that - waiting for the ONE that will stop the insatiable urge for more and better.
When will it be?
WHEN WILL IT ALL STOP!!!

That made my day. you are so totally right. sad, isn´t it?
i'm sorry i'm just here for the cookies and juice...which would be where btw?
Actually yeah, I need to make a decision quick (although I am addicted to PDAViet 4.0.0.0.3), but I think I need two things
1. For it to work lol
2. A stable wifi connection (although I don't use it much, but I want to know that is there when i need it)
It's looong road... Enjoy the ride
Hey Jeff,
I frankly thought that this was touch cynical. Yep we’ve had issues, bugs and crashes, but I guess in the end of the day, I loved the feeling of being anew, different, and to an extend personalized…
I’ve tried coupla ROMs till now .4a PDAviet looked good. But I am stuck since coupla weeks on .3a pdaviet ROM… I love it for it’s crispness, speed and STABILITY… The issues I’ve had with these ROM has been worked around( visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=308266&page=47 for my workarounds on the issues I faced). One wish though would be the battery drain. In my WM5 my prophet used to last for two day and still gimme 10-15% left. But with this ROM I’ll be very lucky if I could wait to get back home on my second day to charge..
But above all this entire Flash thingi is giving a feeling that I am not tied down any more. I get the familiar feeling of hitting the road on my bike again with wind against my face. I’ll travel wherever I like at my pace at my wish. And I turn to my friends who cook these ROMs for the fuel. I don’t like a particular brand of fuel? I stop over at another bunk. And it’s not the fuel that thrills me but it’s the ride. I’d thank all the ROM cookers for the ride. Great going and wish it'll never stop coz there notheing perfect only perspectives. God bless
PS- Jeff, I like your style of writing...
Well, even though Jeff pretty much described it all, there are many like myself that no matter how cool or stable a ROM is, will continue to try new stuff on our beloved Prophets just for the fun of it.
Actually I'm flashing the FantasticB4 (with TouchFlo capabilities) on my device even though I was pretty happy with my previous ROM.
Cheers!
Rayan

Hello Jeff,
Are you my missing twin brother that got stolen from the hosipital at birth that even my parents didn't know about?
I went through the same thing with these WM6 ROM's. I just checked, I started doing that about March. I lost numerous precious sleeping hours and sex life.
What do you do for a living? Someday we should meet to have a coffee (not a drink).
Jeff .....
Dont fret .. I too flash my life away . I have been easily thru over 1,000 phones since I began using cells. I have flashed , flexed , seem edit , hacked , chracked , modded and just about tried a little of everything to a cell phone thats possible . I have even blew up a few phones just to see how strong they really are. Ran them over with car , truck , bus bike and who even knows. I even tried to flush 1 from an airplane to see what happens but it got stuck ... LOL Then I thought dammm airplanes dont flush into the open air. LOL . So I guess we in the right place ....
riyazhyder: Thanks for your complements, and yes it was meant to be intra-cynical, if it seamed extra-cynical, my appologies. You are right, enjoy the ride - ya don't know how far the road goes.
Johnston411: Thanks for the link, helps knowing that there are others out there like us. Yes my wife HATES my Prophet!
jychan28: Yo, bro! HAHAHA - Like probably many here I am in IT, a network admin, therefore this stuff is kinda eat and drink for me.
PURESKILLZZZ: You got it bad, man! Blowin' up the darned things! Whoa! Cool!

Hey fellas and welcome to jeff's flash-a-holics ... Chargers and cases are to the right , roms and betas to the left and in the middle burnt phones.
Never ending - perpeptual
Ha,
thats true--its perpeptual-- Ones effort gives energy to other and others to other and so on.
No one can stop this by any rule, but its matter of self satisfaction.
In my view our devices r primarly used for working not flashing ( just joking), so what i do ( probably most of us)
1) working 5 week days
2) F(**k)lashing 2 weekend days
so this OK ?

as many of you know, i've been in contact with customer support since launch day of the rezound, reporting any bugs we had, the pink light issue and mainly the bad audio during video recording. iv'e spoken to them over the phone countless times to tell them whats up, and voiced all of our concerns.
a year later, of course there's a few issues with teh DNA, so i dug back up an old ticket and was able to chat with support again, and i was able to get the same guy i spoke with last year. we've been messaging back and forth almost daily about issues and i've got a thread ongoing here where people submit any bugs or suggestions, and i know for a fact HTC is looking at them.
the other day, he asked me for my address along with inviting me to join HTC Elevate. today i got this in the mail. on top of it, i'm sure you all remember how i recently was able to get an HTC rep to my store for the first time since we've opened just by contacting them..the day after i wrote to them, a rep was at my store to show me all the new HTC stuff, and provided free display models and brochures...and a day after that, HTC sent a huge box of stuff to give customers (stands, bracelets, sim card openers, ice scrapers, little things)
so yeah. this is why i deal with HTC. i know they'll listen to me, and i know how much they appreciate our consumer feedback. i've never had a company treat me so well as a customer and with such a level of personal contact.
Very cool :good:
Very nice.
Maybe HTC could teach Asus a thing or two...

i believe so. if it's in my thread, they check it out. i'm going to write back today to thank them for it, so i'll mention it. again, have any of you guys tried antoher sim? sim's do go bad sometimes; i see it often.
Cool This is my first HTC and I've been happy so far. Before this I had a Motorola Droid X, which was my first smartphone.
i like the htc andy :good:
Hey Jay,
Can you ask them to slip you an S-off hboot?
Ok but seriously...
If you would, Plz ask if a radio update is in the works. I love this phone, but my Rezound got MUCH better reception.
Thanks,

Yeah, I've had to "help manage" my wife and daughter's Samsung phones and I am so glad I've stuck with HTC from my beginning with the OG Incredible to the Inc2, to the Rez and now the DNA. People just don't know how good this stuff is.
I've registered for HTC Elevate, but so far no go. You're lucky there, Jay!
Anyway, HTC still makes the best stuff and if they could convince VZW to unlock the bootloaders and give us bleeding edge folks a little s-off love, we'd have just about everything. Glad you've got their ear. Enjoy!

Can you point to the battery threads you are talking about? I'm getting max 4 hours screen on time, and usually 3.5.
only way to get more would be to turn off data, location, and most other stuff. Kernel is killing the battery on my first unit, and a replacement unit is doing the same.
Thanks.
Well I have been having alot of problems with my X2 lately (memory glitches, battery not charging) and yesterday was the end and the thing wouldent even turn on. I was in the process of porting pac man rom when all this happened and im not going to get another X2. I just wanted to say how great of a community this x2 forum was and especially great that this was my first time on XDA. My plan now is that i am probably going to make use of my mothers old Samsung Facinate. I hope their page is as good as ours. Bye Guys!
its been nice having you a part of our forums for so long sir! thanks for hanging in there with us on one NIGHTMARE of a phone. best of luck to ya !
I saw that someone got 4.2 on their droid running, thats awsome. I hardbricked my samsung facinate the second day i got it. Im looking on ebay for a nice galaxy nexus and calling it a phone for a year or so. Good Luck!

hi everyone! I am seeking your expertise as I came upon this forum trying to help my son fix his phone. He's only 11 years old- but as we call him at home our "tech guy". He got a brand new HTC One M8 yesterday and 3 hours later - the phone was "bricked" as I have been told. Apparently, (these are his words) he "unlocked the bootloader using HTCdev, then flashed twrp, then flashed supersu.zip.
I have no idea what any of that means but apparently he did something wrong because his phone is not working and we don't know how to fix it. If you have any compassion for a frustrated Mom who's trying not to be angry with her son -- I would appreciate any advice you can give on how to fix this.
I have attached a picture of what the phone looks like when we turn it on. Not sure how to get picture in post.
Thanks a bunch!!

I'm going to venture to guess that the process will be entirely too long and tedious for someone not well versed to follow and could potential end in disaster. The phone isn't bricked since the main recovery menu pops up. I'd suggest looking on craigslist for someone locally to help you guys out. Unless someone here can offer a quick fix, i'd much rather you find someone that has experience to fix this in person. Sorry if that's not the answer you were looking for but that would probably be your best bet

Thank you for your responses! Much appreciated. Believe it or not - this kid fixed it all by himself. Basically (remember I am not technical) he unlocked the boot loader then flashed a ROM onto an SD card and was able to load. Don't think I worded correctly - but it's fixed and working fine. WHEW!!
I will certainly keep the info to this forum handy because something tells me that I will be visiting again with this child..................
Have a great evening!!

I started getting into ROMs your sons age. I am 15 now. I have hard bricked a Motorola Atrix 2, meaning it won't turn on at all. That's cool your son is a tech wizard too, it will do him a lot of good and a lot of bad. You should educate him about Ubuntu and let him screw with that on a PC. Much safer messing with a computer than a phone. Anyways, glad he got it working. ?

Me too! Im 14 now.
The M8 is my first android phone and custom roms seem to get better and better.
The phone was not "bricked", and you are using the term improperly. Your son simply did something to make the phone unable to boot into the Android operating system. This state is usually easy to recover from, as long as the proper steps are known. So that is not a brick.
Itis of course your choice whether to let your kid modify (mod) your phone in such ways. And part of the modding process is always going to involve some hiccups (for even the most experienced users) and figuring out how to fix them. So I'm glad your son figured it out.
On the other hand, both you and he should be fully aware (if not already) that modding the phone may void the warranty, and also permanent damage (a true "brick") is possible if he doesn't fully understand what he is doing. Such damage is not covered by warranty.
To the OP (original poster), please do not create multiple thread asking the same question.
Its against forum rules, and makes it super confusing for those trying to help you.

I agree about his technical skills being alot of good and bad! We've had our share with him-- I won't bore you with the lists. My husband is the tech guy (of course he was away on business when this happened) and he understands his quest for knowledge and how much he loves this stuff - -says it's how he learns. Hubby has given him some old laptops and ipods and he sure has fun with those!

Oh, I'm sorry. Are you counting the on contract price? Okay. Well, throw it on the ground or drop it in a pool or give it to a child to ruin. Now go back to the store to get a replacement and see how much it costs. You also signed a contract and took on an extra monthly data plan... For a child. The fact that you have no clue how much the phone actually costs explains a lot, actually.
I'm not concerned about your wallet. You clearly have more money than sense, so rather than crying here, just go buy a replacement phone for him to ruin. While you're at it, go ahead and get him an espresso machine.

Seems like she asked a question to a problem and it was answered. I'm not sure how taking a personal shot at a newcomer to the forum accomplishes anything. Her decision to buy her son anything is hers and hers alone, why inject your opinion into it, much less insinuate that she has no sense. It comes off as aloof and petty. This doesn't seem to be in the spirit of this forum. Flame away.

Thanks a bunch for your support and from all of those who responded. I've visited various forums in my life and am well aware that there are always those few who just like to be mean and find power on these boards. I didn't come here asking for anyone's opinion on what I allow my children to do or how they spend their allowance - just needed some advice. Sincerely appreciate the great input that I have received.

The actual retail cost of the device is $639; which would also be the replacement cost of this device. The on-contract price of $199 is just a subsidized cost, which the carrier basically spreads over the length of your 2-year contract.
