Unfortunately I'm moving away from the Photon, so will be discontinuing the guides. I'll poke my head in once and awhile and update any pertinent info. Time to pass on the torch...someone should begin another and request it stickied.
I enjoyed the MoPho...but one month after release it's way too quiet in here for me. I crave flashing goodness...and hear only crickets. I will be picking up the SGSII when it hits, and look forward to seeing some of you over there!
Thanks to Yay, Edgan, Kenneth, DCour, Baller, Mikey and others that have taken a stab at this great phone!
Good luck on your next phone. For me I am pretty pleased with how well this phone works stock. The two things I wanted in particular (root and webtop) were achieved amazingly quickly. While I look forward to a sexy fast custom rom with all the bells and whistles (and rock solid stability). I can wait for that, I am more then satisfied that the Photon has lived up to the hype. It's the first time a smart phone has done that for me.

Damn man sucks to see you go. You will be missed. You still in your 30 days? How you going to get the SGSII, just pay full price? Anyways, hope all is well with that phone and I know they will have some great guides over there ;-) Good luck!

Yeah today was last day of 30 days...so I cancelled the line, started a new one with a Nexus S on it, and will swap for the SGSII when it comes along (rumor is 9/9/2011).
Thanks for the kind words DJ!!

You know that you are allowed to switch it out 3 times which resets your 30 days every time right? guess its too late now but yes you are allowed to do that. That's what I did. they just swap you out a new photon and reset your 30 days. lol I loved it. Does help to have a good guy at sprint to deal with also
But like I said bud, good luck and you are very welcome.
I may do the same thing. I have my girl and her mom on my account I may just give my girl the Photon and use her mom's upgrade on the SGSII. Will see how it goes first though. Really like the Photon, it has a **** ton of potential! Really too bad Motorola can't get their head out of their ass and realize that's what keeps a majority of us around.
Take care o/

This is rather disappointing. It's only quiet in here because the phone is still so young, bootloader was only recently unlocked. As soon as all the hardcore HTC fans start to realize this phone blows both Evo's out of the water, this place will be booming. Even if not, we have some very talented developers making feature rich stable roms. I was a flashaholic as well, but especially on phones such as the Evo well over half of the roms are just plain rubbish and aren't worth flashing. I'd hate to see that happen to the Photon and then deal with all of the people complaining that the phone doesn't work when they just loaded up half-functional software ripped from quality roms by a 12 year old.
Either way, hopefully you'll come back to this phone when we learn what major flaw the latest/greatest Samsung has. I gave up on them after all of their Android devices had major recurring defects, ones that I still see today in my tech centers. Moment/Intercept/Transform had way too little internal memory and the processor wore out quickly. Epic/Captivate/Vibrant all had borked GPS and suffered from random locking up/reboots. Nexus S 4G has terrible signal quality and terrible battery life. Replenish has been their worst yet, charging port shorts out causing it to say it's charging when it isn't and has gotten so hot that I've actually seen them brought in with melted LCD panels and it burnt the customer upon picking it up. I don't know how Samsung has avoided a lawsuit on that one. As for myself, I will not be picking up another Samsung device regardless of how amazing the specs look on paper. They can't seem to get their products fully functional.

I agree completely. I was just looking at the SGS2 reviews and whatnot for the last hour or so. I honestly think the photon already has beat it. I remember my first Samsung phone from ATT, I forget what it was even called actually. I'm sure I could look it up but it was like almost a smartphone. I mean it was, but there was no market or anything and it was just what it was.
I will be staying here unless there is just no action moving forward. But I don't see that happening because like you said this is a great phone and we have only begun to unlock the powers it has, I cannot wait to see numbers when we have a proper kernel source and a proper kernel made for us. Stock my phone has hit over 2500 in Quadrant and I know other people have gotten higher. In Linpack it is hitting higher than some of the highest numbers ever recorded for linpack. So I really can't wait to see what this thing has when it is fully unleashed! It still is just the beginning.

Thanks for your contribution to the Photon. Enjoy whatever device you end up with.
I know it's a week before Christmas and all, but it just seems (to me at least) that the forum(s) have died. I just hope this isn't' the end for the X2 and that there's still some dev action going on.
I just hope that I didn't bring anyone down, and I do appreciate our devs, and the guys working on 2nd-init.
Don't worry. Devs are hard at work. Although this isn't the most loved phone out there, we are working on it. Keep patient and we'll let you know when there are new things available for public consumption.

This phone mainly gets support from developers who have this phone and want to make it better. Other devs that develop for other phone pass over the Droid X2 because it has a locked bootloader. Which means a lot of the stuff required to run things that other phones can is locked down by the manufacturer. It doesnt give the Droid X2 a lot of options. This is why I appreciate all the devs who try their hardest to get the Droid X2 a little more awesome.
To the original post, it IS the holiday season and developers have families and all as well. They dont work for us. lol. But they haven't left us.
Is it just me or have the irc chats died down as well? Or have they just moved to another channel and I just missed the memo? lol

mastafunk set up a new channel for it. Can't say if it's been busy in there though as I haven't been around much myself lately. Early Christmas for our family here this weekend since some of the kids are going to their other half's relaticks for Christmas weekend this year. One year there, one year here.
Anyway, if you want to check it out, the new channel is #X2-AOSP.

Look, I had my week of finals which absolutely killed my development time. But now that it's over, I've started working on the phone again. Yes, there was a LOT of excitement (maybe too much) at first, but don't say that development has died. Masta seems to think so too. I warned people about getting too excited about this right away but looks like it still got out of hand. I have officially started working on CWMR and/or CM7 again and hopefully can make some progress with both of them.

I was thinking its odd that we never saw a soak for 2.3.5, so maybe they pitched that and are going straight to 4.0!

Now THAT'S funny.
Verizon sat on the 2.3.4 update for 2months "testing" and "quality control"
THEN moto did the soak.
If anything if it WAS scrapped I would see us getting 2.3.7 way before 4.0
And 4.0 is most likely a dream fir us.
They didn't even care how buggy the 2.3.4 update was. And they DEFINITELY knew about it.
/end rant....sorry...

Yeah I bet we don't see another official update or maybe one and it'll be a 2.3.5 small update. Then nothing. Due to motor cranking out device after device we might as well have the og droid in their mind. Just my thoughts

wow, was it really 2 months ash? I was in on both of them, and my memory was thinking that the soak was announced shortly after the leaks were discovered here.
and I know I'm dreamin about the 4.0, just some blue sky thinking there
they are being pushed for 18 months of support though

The sbf leak was FOUND shortly before the soak yes...u r correct there.
BUT(I believe it was mentioned in the beginning of 2.3.4sbf thread) the date attached to the sbf file was from a month or two prior. Meaning that since the sbf WAS the same as the OTA, that the build was finished a month or two BEFORE soak was even announced. Which more than likely means Verizon was "testing"(sitting) on it for a long time.
Lol...and.nothing wrong wit some blue sky dreaming...I still have slight hopes we eventually get an unlocked BL. But I know chances are most likely not lol.

I, also, got too excited... but am thankful that you are still working on our beloved X2. I hope you did well on all of your finals and am pulling for you to succeed with this development.
Happy Holidays!!!
Let's also remember people that developing.. modding ... theming phones is extremely time consuming and what u get when a dev finishes a project is something that makes your device better or more customized.. I am not a developer because my knowledge on a lot of the cpu information is limited at best at this point although im learning a lot on this aspect... I do theme for the droid x2 and I think it is safe to say that I have spent atleast 24 to 48 hours of working time on any of the themes I have made... furthermore when embarking on projects and I can only imagine what this feels like embarking on a project as ambitious as what dragonzkiller and others have contributed to frustration sets in... maybe these guys get this to work.. maybe they don't.. maybe they go ahead and create new roms customized to their... bottom line be grateful u have people that make this phone better
Merry christmas

Ive had my AT&T SGS2 for a few months now (prolly since about a week after it came out) and i absolutely love the phone but tired of Samsung/ AT&T's lack of urgency to get the ICS update out and i was wondering what you guys would be a better choice for me... Root the SGS2 with ICScrewed ROM or sell it and get the GSM Galaxy Nexus? Im a pretty tech savy so i can handle rooting the phone, ive unlocked and jailbroken plenty of iphones so this should be just as easy.... i love having the latest and greatest software, so the nexus in the point is great for me but i do love my SGS2... what should i do!?

I would keep the sgs2 as a backup and get the galaxy nexus. to be honest the nexus s is a freaking powerhouse that blew my mind. i can only imagine the galaxy nexus. BUT i would read a lot about both phones and compare them. other than updates from google what can the galaxy nexus give you that the gs2 cant? besides it wont be long before source is out and then we'll have ics running good.
tough call mate. I've been on the fence about getting the GNexus just for the native ICS..that and the phone is gorgeous. (Decided to get some ink done instead ) But.. there are plenty of ICS themed ROMs, and it really is only a matter of time before we get a real ICS update. I know not today but I imagine by the end of April we will all be wearing our ICS shoes..maybe not, but then again maybe! The only thing that turns me off about the GNexus is the 5MP camera. I'd hate to downgrade from 8 to 5.. that just kinda sucks. Anyway.. good luck with your decision

I love the native ICS on the nexus, i know even though we will get the ICS update eventually but wont look anything like what the nexus does im sure, even the ICS on the UK version doesnt look anything like Nexus ICS....Thats the same thing that turns me off from the Nexus too is the camera along with the no sd card slot as well but 16GB is plenty for me though....i do use the camera but not as much to make it a huge deal that its only 5MP....

What lack of urgency? The I9100 was the second or third non-Nexus phone on the planet to get ICS. HTC only beat Samsung on a select few devices by one week. No one else has deployed ICS to a phone yet.
I would keep the sgs2, something better will be out in later and you'll wish you waited to get that. Then again, you can't wait for ICS so why would you wait for another phone?

my suggestion:
1- keep your GS2
2- sit on your couch
3- have a beer
4- be patient.
Unless you're going to buy an unlocked international Nexus, you would be forced to go with Verizon... and I dont suggest that to anyone.

Source should drop no later than a month from this past week... my guess is that it will be posted between next week and the first of April (Im speculating here) because they have always posted up source relatively fast when it comes to their European Galaxy series. All AT&T sources took forever to drop.
so what you guys are saying just keep the SGS2 and root it? whats the most stable ICS rom out right now? or should i wait for a better one to come out?

Your problem is that you aren't satisfied with anything more than a few weeks. Once you get ICS, you'll be wondering when jellybean will come out. It's a vicious and never ending cycle. If you just have to have the latest and greatest, then you'll be spending $$ every 6months to keep up. You could just hang out and enjoy the phone for what it is, maximize it's performance with a good stable ROM and go for plenty of number 3's.
My SGS2 absolutely destroys GNex in benchmarks and performance comparisons. If it's a 'powerhouse' you're after, think twice. If it's Joneses you're after, then other points are moot.
Remember you're posting this question in the i777 forums, so naturally most will advise to keep the GS2. If you asked the same question in the GNexus forums the advise would surely go the other way.
IMHO, we're too close to source drop for our device to leave it now. What are you really gaining with the Gnexus other that pure ICS and more frequent updates from google. Thats what great about XDA, once source drops and people get to work on it, we don't have to sacrifice much, if anything.
You said you feel comfortable rooting, etc. So wait a few more weeks and get ready to flash some sweet $hit!!

Yeah, i agree with the others. Wait it out, ICS will be here in no time. Plus, other than the ICS, I think that the GNex is a worse phone. The Pentile screen messes with my eyes, and the processor is worse too.
Exynos man. Exynos... Mmmm yes exynos. Why would you want to leave a exynos chipset for a TI OMAP? Even though the sgsii is not a "google experience" phone, itself is its only little experience why do you think apple is after its ass. Lol.

Hi. I'm not sure if this is appropriate, but what the heck. I've owned an HTC Incredible for almost 24 months and this past Saturday I dropped it glass first onto the concrete. Needless to say, I have an x2 UPS should be dropping off at my house today. I'm looking forward to the larger screen and dual core CPU.
After browsing the developer forums, I am disappointed how little ROM selection there is. I read this is because Motorola locks down their system. I had the choice of an Incredible 2 or this. I chose this, so I hope I won't be disappointed.
About me: I have a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, so I hope to help test out ROMs as much as possible after I root. Which shouldn't take too long to talk myself into it . I'm more of a lurker than a poster. That's all for now.

Welcome. Since you are coming from an HTC phone, you may get a little frustrated with how much you cant do on a Motorola phone. BUT, we do have awesome developers who make awesome ROMs for our phones. I suggest Eclipse or CM7. And I would forget how you used a rooted HTC and learn from scratch with your DX2. For instance, if you have used ROM manager or anything similar, don't use it with your DX2. A lot of people mess up there phones with that. We dont use ClockworkMod Recovery, but an alternative called Bootstrap Recovery. Since our phones are locked down, we have to be tethered to a wall charger to use this. No flashing on the go for us. And ICS is a ways away from getting onto our phones. Just a few things we have to deal with. Its still a nice phone.

Though stuff is bleak now and people like me recently moved to other phones like the nexus or dinc2 or resound, still dragonzkiller is working on CM9 and that should immensely help this device. Right now 2 of the best ROMs are CM7 and eclipse, which is a huge complement to eclipse as it is based on blur....
Oh crap, btw pray to god that your phone does NOT have 2.3.5 OTA on it. If so, you cannot root it. Yet.

With it being more difficult to flash, maybe I'll have a more operable phone lol. On a more serious note, after reading that HTC is releasing ICS for the Incredible 2 I am somewhat disappointed for not choosing it. I'm happy to try a Motorola phone again thought and will enjoy the 0.3" larger screen, my main reason for talking insurance into giving me this phone. Anyways, thanks for the information, it will come in handy on down the road.
Sad to hear there's only 2 main ROMs people use. I'm crossing my fingers for having 2.3.4 .
It probably will have 235 http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x2-hacks/205470-bummer-full-2-3-5-1-3-418-root-broken.html

That sucks. Damn Motorola.
Welcome to the X2 commnuity
To be brutally honest, I believe the incredible 2 has a much higher satisfaction rate compared to the X2. *cough cough* that's why I was going to get the Inc2 until I saw Rezound at a reasonable price
But as said, there are some developers that make X2 quaint =)
I SWEAR TO GOD if the ota breaks root I'm leaving this crap phone.... omg I'm effn pissed!!! Hopefully there was a mistake somewhere... read the link above guys.. and be ready to scream at someone.

I thought someone in this thread said it but I guess not. I read someone saying Eclipse is modified to block OTA updates. Thats a relief on my part since thats what I'm using.

As far as I know/remember, all ROMs block OTAs. CM7 does too...

The Incredible 2 didn't even pop in my mind to be honest.
My phone has 2.3.4, let the fun begin . The phone seems pretty quick so far, except when unlocking. Does the snappiness end over time like I've heard?
I've had both, dinc2 is far better.
no offense to dx2 devs though. Dzk, nitro and company are the best.

I hate to hear that. How were you able to trade up to an Inc2?

Yes. Yes, it does end. Anyway, the good news is you are on 2.3.4 and thereby been spared by the tyranny of Moto, but by just. Your best bet is CM7/Eclipse and soon CM9... Just don't ask for ETAs, else you'll suffer the wrath of the Dragon!
And don't dare update to 2.3.5. In fact, just root that damn thing and install CM7/Eclipse to avoid being nagged by the phone to update, when the damned update does arrive.. Enjoy (I can't say that with a straight face, sigh) your device as much as possible. And I hope I and others didn't rain on your parade too much. Have fun with the X2...

Here is how I did it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586153. This other forum was what led up to it.
If you have bloat freezer or titanium back up you can stop the ota update.

That's good news, I can't live without Titanium Backup.

If by rain on my parade you mean make me regret getting this phone... . I do enjoy the slightly larger screen and resolution so that's trade off enough for me. But if it does end up like the post you linked, dinc2 here I come.
After not even having the phone activated for 24 hours I'm having trouble. It's the infamous sdcard music playback skipping I've read about . This happens intermittently, sometimes few skips sometimes many. Called Asurion, they told me to take the battery out and hold power down for 15 seconds. We'll see how it does at work tomorrow.
Edit: This happens with the phone idol running PowerAMP with music from 128 KBPS all the way to 2580KBPS. It gets worse downloading updates on 3G.
Youll never completely get rid of that, and its not the sdcard it dies it on internal as well, im looking into new samsung phones, done with motorola soon as I find what i want. Without nitro, dkz, and the rest of our gang i would have been gone months ago. But cm7 and eclipse are both amazing compared to what this was out of the box
from my X2 roaming the north
If you go into power amp setings and find the buffering option and select the largest one it may help the skipping. I came from the original droidx and i was expecting a better phone but turned out to be worse. I am just glad that we have any devs working on this phone! they have done alot for it.
I hope moderators will keep their attention away from this thread.
This is in loving memory to a great man. Ashley (Ashclepdia) Hanna. A great person and friend. We met right here on this forum in this section years ago. He got me into modding and being part of the Droid X2 Universe. He always helped anyone out on here no matter how stupid the issue. Eclipse Rom was his life. He loved this forum and modding his X2 more then anything.
Ashclepdia (Ash) past away on July 20th 2017.
He will always be missed.
Take care bro.
Mod: I request this be stickied if possible as tribute to him.
Yo Ripley
Believe it or not bro still got mine and pristine on the dock running his work I need to do a little homework . Got to release this bloated battery before yeah bad things and I'd love to turn it into my desk clock. Such memories,
Salute, all respects...
Ps. My first stock phone since this forum began is the Z2 play on Verizon and I've never hated a phone more my entire life it is the worst piece of indescribable and I won't even go into my attempts. Good thing I give very little for it bad thing is unfortunately I'm not able to better acquisition for now, it's just heartbreaking. Of course silly for me but still heartbreaking nonetheless even sickening... Just owning this thing well maybe the first time I bricked the X2 lol after all it was my first of first of first with much love. hopefully not the last ,excluding the Z2 play on Verizon it will be the last for me of its kind with Verizon and maybe Moto. Of course I'personal opinions and preferences.
