Bootloader unlocked for custom recovery?

Could someone clarify this for me:
Is it true that in order to install a custom recovery the XTZ needs to have its bootloader unlocked?
I installed custom recovery on my XZ phone alright without having to unlock the bootloader....

[Q] How to Create A CWM RECOVERY FOR LOCKED BOOTLOADER!

Hi!
I want to know how you can create a clockwork mod recovery for a locked bootloader, I know its to do with installing the recovery in the system partition instead of the boot as you would do if you had an unlocked bootloader.
Anyone got any tips?
I have the same question. Someone can help us?

[Q] Need Help Getting Recovery

I was trying to unroot my HTC One by relocking the bootloader then through SuperSU, However, I don't have TWRP anymore and I don't want to unlock the bootloader again with some form of recovery. (I have S-On)

So you unrooted it with a custom recovery and then relocked your boot loader? Or did you just have root. Are you trying to reroot?

So when I unlock the bootloader again, I would have to flash TWRP/CWM, then flash a ROM in order to get an OS back?
That's it

Installing Recovery After Bootloader

I have a rooted HTC One with a locked bootloader that I would like to unroot back to stock. I had TWRP as a custom recovery before I relocked the bootloader, but cannot use that now because of my locked bootloader. If I unlock the bootloader again, would I have any form of recovery or a ROM?

How to factory reset on HTC Desire 626s MetroPCS Variant (That has locked recovery)

Hi everyone,
I've recently forgotten the pin on my HTC Device. Unfortunately whenever i've tried to boot into recovery mode, there exists no recovery option. The bootloader is locked and i have no idea how to reset it without unlocking the device.
Any and all help is appreciated.
Can you elaborate what you mean when you say there isn't any recovery option? You should be able to boot into recovery from the bootloader screen. Bootloader locked or unlocked doesn't matter for this.

Sorry for the lack of clarification. What i mean to say is that there is no factory reset option in the recovery menu.

You're either not in the correct menu or there is something really messed up with your phone. You're booting to the bootloader screen and then clicking on recovery?
