I'm really curious to understand why most (if not all) ROM devs always recommend people to use OverclockWidget over SetCPU to set OC values for their [ROMs] custom kernels.
Why is that?
Is there something wrong with SetCPU?
Because it's easier to use.
it is easier to use and install
... and it's free!
I don't understand it myself...
SetCPU is:
- Free
- By far and above more configurable, plus you can auto detect changes in available frequencies
- Profiles much better
- not ugly as sin
OverclockWidget could do with a design upgrade.

true, but as you see people like easy usage better
easier to use
I don't see how overclockwidget is any easier to use at all
Because Overclockwidget is free?
Set CPU is also free. Isn't...?
how can I find it on the market?
I just want to see how many people use one and the other.
There's one thing can't argue with is the statistic/the numbers.
No it is not: http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.mhuang.overclocking
Its free for xda users
there is a thread on xda
The dev has kindly made SetCPU available for free to xda members. Use the search on here,... and if you do like it, consider paying for it on the market as a thank-you.

For us it is free. Everyone knows this.
SetCPU is free here on XDA. In my oppinion SetCPU is much easier to use, better looking overall better than overclock widget. Maybe it's because devs haven't tried the new version?
I think it is this

So that's the reasons? I thought that SetCPU was incompatible with those custom kernels or something...
Good, I prefer SetCPU over OverclockWidget any day so...
Thanks for all your opinions.
Wow hadn't tried SetCPU til now. Quite impressed. I'd never bothered because i had to install it manually, not sure if its worth the effort, there really is little difference when it comes down to it. Both do the same job in a different manner...
SetCpu is free can be found in G1 apps...Overclock widget is hellish fugly and doesnt work right for me

SetCPU is free for XDA members. Its on the forum somewhere. Though if you like it and it works then you should buy it/donate. Also I think someone made a free alternative to SetCPU and posted it up somewhere on the forums as well. Can't remember what he called it.

Quick question: are there benefits to runing SetCPU on a stock rooted NC? I hear the most you can clock a stock rooted NC is 800MHz (the Nook's advertized clock speed), but I'm unclear as to whether the Nook Color really runs at 600MHz most of the time.

The only benefits I can think of, using SetCPU on a stock rooted NookColor would be maybe preserving potential batter life and increase your CPU processing "on demand" (one of the scaling options with SetCPU); there might be more benefits, but the only thing I would think is preserving battery life and manging cpu processing when not needed.
And to monitor if your device really runs at 600Mhz, you would another app to monitor the cpu processing, a good app that might help you view what's going on behind the scenes is Norton (Beta) Utilities and System Panel, both are available within the market.

Why would you lose it? Apps are attached to your Google account, not your ROM or device.
There's one rolled out with the 6.8.5 image called "No Frill CPU". It works fine and I am currently OC'ed to 1.1Ghz.

I have a rooted stock NC and SetCPU is set to run at 300MHZ unless an app needs the 800MHz clock speed. I now get days of run time before charges. Originally I got less than a full day. Well worth the price.

How exactly did you do that? I just got this and I want to make sure I'm doing it right. All I want is to conserve battery life because I don't want to charge it every day.
On the Main tab I set it for "ondemand" with a Max of 800 and a Min of 300. I chose two profiles Screen Off and Battery (which I set to <20%) and set max and min at 300 for all. I didn't change anything on the Advanced tab so the Sampling Rate is 300000, the Up Threshold 95, Ignore Nice Load and Powersave Bias are both 0.
Anyone have a ultimate setting for saving battery life in SETCPU for the Motorola Photon?
Bump.. Just bought it myself will read more into it... But if someone has a quick down and dirty on settings for the photon would be appreciated... I did do some initial settings but felt the screen was getting too hot so I aborted the settings I applied.
I stopped using setcpu back when i had an HTC hero (2009). You really don't need it imo lol. Wanna save battery, use an undervolt kernel or turn off mobile data when you're not using it. You could also turn off auto background data sync.
Will look into it, just seemed that the percentage based rules looked attractive inthe program.. Always nice to be able to apply less than rules, greater than etc..
And if you're drinkin' well, you know
That you're my friend and I say
I think I'll have myself a beer
Don't think an app can control our cpu. I've tried setting frequencies only to have them ignored, pretty sure some programs will have the under volt ignored.

Set cpu undervolting my photon def works.. I did notice (not recently though) that under a lot of stress while undervolted itll kick up to a higher voltage though I havnt seen it do that for a long time now..

Its all based on the personal preference man. If you feel the need to use it go ahead. Myself, I don't think its necessary. I mean it's good for setting profiles in different situations (screen on/off,charging etc). Most of the time the kernels baked in settings are good enough but some people combine a custom kernel with setcpu for maximum control over CPU. Setcpu is absolutely pointless unless you're running a custom kernel. Plus if you use cyanogen roms it will allow you to set CPU values within the rom. Again, these are just my thoughts on it man.
Well I'm in the process of trying to get CM9 working, so I guess I wouldn't need it.
Thanks for the clarification.
Can I ask, how did you UV your cpu ? is it somewhere within the setcpu, or it comes from the kernel ? I really don't understand about ocing/uving an android phone, thx.

Custom kernels will allow you to over clock or undervolt. Set CPU just allows you to set clock speed upon boot along with custom profiles. If you install a kernel that allows undervolting it should have the custom values baked in. Again, use set CPU if you please. Joker has a set of custom kernels both uv/oc. I'm using his 1.3 oc kernel for CM7 at the moment but I'm only clocked at 1.2 just testing out. So far its amazing.

Doesn't voltage control also work? When I was using my Epic4g, i preferred voltage control over setcpu since it does both: OC and UV.
However, I'd agree with kennypow3rs that i dont think any of it is necesary with the Photon. It's quite fast already and the battery life is amazing. I hacked my Epic 4g like crazy, through 10 ROMs, OC/UV, Eclair through GB, and I have to say, it was a waste of my time. I am now extremely happy to have the Photon, stock and rooted.

I prefer to use this instead of the ones built in to cm7/9, personal preference i guess.
But the only real reason i use it is for the profiles feature. Which i set my phone to screen off to max at 216mhz(wish i could auto disable while using Pandora), then to any time below 100% battery to max 750mhz (with jokers kernel that disables the 2nd core) and then finely to run full speed when its plugged in.

For the convenience of writing,Overclock shall be referred to as OC.
So,the Ace has started recieving OC kernels, which is a good thing but OC is dangerous too.I decided to make a thread and warn all users who don't know much and overclock. So,with this thread,I intend to educate all newbies about OCing before users start bricking their phone.
I shall write about overclocking, what overclocking does and then discuss abotut the various advantages and disadvantages it comes with
WHAT IS OVERCLOCKING?
Overclocking is the process of operating a computer component at a higher clock rate.In our case, the processor. Most people overclock their phones for perfomance but this so-called perfomance comes at a price which every user who oc should know about. So,I am going to discuss it
Android phones are clocked at a safe level when we buy it.However,we exceed this 'safe level' when oc it.
ADVANTAGES OF OVERCLOCKING:
1.Perfomance-OCing gives perfomance and thats what most people go after when they oc.
2.Cost-saving-Some people who have extensive knowledge about OCing do it to save money. For eg-Some people claim that they can get clock speeds upto 1GHz
when they oc.SGS has a clock speed of 1GHz(but when they overclock, they get better speeds I just put this one in so that people can have better knowledge)
DISADVANTAGES OF OVERCLOCKING:
1.Excess heat production-OCing produces more heat, nothing to be added
2.Lifespan decreases-By overclocking to extreme levels, you are actually killing your phone.Because of the excess heat generated, some interior parts may get damages.
3.Damage to GPU-Because of the heat generated(i think)
4.Excess Battery consumption-Because of the intense heat generated and the unusual number of charge cycles, battery consumption becomes high.As you might already know,Ace's battery is really suckish. With OC,its going to be even worse.
5.Permanent effects-If you were having weird effects when you OCed for a long time, you are not going to feel much better when you right-clock again
6.Instability-Stability levels of various phones vary Some get OC speeds near 1GHz while others are having trouble getting over 900MHz
7.FCs,Reboots and other errors-You have a chance of getting constant reboots and FCs when you OC,it depends. Some have even complainde of their touchscreen having complains when they switch to OC kernel
FINAL WORDS:
IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING,DON'T DO IT
OCing experiences/Suggestions:
Valakas:
Im used to OCing almost all the PC's i had, and my SGA wasnt an exception but sadly i didnt notice any huge improvement in the performance or in the lags i had in some huge games.
OC is a good way of wasting battery life and perhaps burn your phone. i wouldnt advise anybody to do it because its just not worthy.
P4qui7o:
I better get a new and stronger phone instead doing this !
Anyway you're phone is gonna "howl" some day after OC, and if you don't have money to buy another one, you've better keep it at 800Hz, stock ... my opinion
Yukinok25:
I have been OC's my HTC HERO since I bought it (2009), it's an old ARMv6 525mhz, which I pushed to 710mhz/MAX.
I NEVER had any issue for my OC's, I obviously can say that it becames maybe slightly warmer than the stock clock but nothing near hot.
Thanks to this, my Hero is running all the lastest rom with no lag for this two years, and so the other people in the Hero forum (basically 90% of the people OC's).
I am agree with the opener that OC's could be dangerous and it might decrease the lifespan of your device, but I also think it depends on the hardware, and I am not agree when I just read is "not" useful, because it DOES give a huge boost to your device.
Besides you can undervolting your CPU when your smartphone is in Idle (my MIN is 19 mhz), so the heat won't be generated anymore, you will save battery life, and the paradox... you will extend the life cicle of your CPU.
Also keep in mind that developers are improving the OC's working on new governors and kernels all the time.
There are risks also when we flash a rom or a new radio version, but that doesn't mean they are not useful. We flash them because we want to enhance our devices
Pardon me,if there are any mistakes, technical or grammatical,if i have missed anything.
Thanx to Wikipedia,PujitJuneja and Google
P.S. I didn't copy-paste it from anywhere, wrote it all down. So,a click on the thanks button will be greatly appreciated
Cheers
I think this was a good piece to explain risks and rewards of OCing.

Is there a version of this kernel without the OC? What I'm really interrested in is the BLN support. Most of the other roms that have it have so much other junk in them, they don't interest me. This one seems very slim and to the point, but I have no need to overclock and further drain my battery.
Or in this version, can I simply "not" overclock and it's just an option?

Yes, you can set the cpu to do whatever you want. Max and min and decide on what governor you want. Setcpu is what most use I think. I use system tuner pro.
Excellent. Thanks to you both. I'll give it a go.
If you look in development on the end posts of the collective rom thread there is a post with the bln fix you can flash over your stock root to take care of that. I would post it here but my note won't let me upload files here.

I'm using the just released LATAM OTA leak (but this also holds true for the first LATAM OTA leak).
The default governor for this 2 OTA leaks is 'interactive' but I was having a very choppy gaming experience, then I decided to change governors and analyze what happened.
When I give 'hotplug' a shot I noticed a much more fluid gaming experience and as time passed I also noticed my battery life was much better.
Did anyone else notice this too?
Anyone else willing to give it a go and share what do you think?
hotplug works better for me as well. ICS LATAM
I hope it gives better battery, it shuts CPU 2 off/on when its not/is needed.
hotplug is the same as ondemand governor except with the ability to turn off the second core when not in use.
How do I change it
Sent from my .211 leak razr do you wanna get cut?

You can google up SetCPU governors and there are detailed explanations into how each governor performs and their advantages/disadvantages. For most stock kernels, hotplug is the way to go for dual core phones as most of the better ones are usually in custom kernels.
Will hotplug save more battery than conservative?

Yes, of-course. Really works for me too, noticed greater performance and battery life.
unfortunately, not for me. i use CPU Tuner to change from ondemand to hotplug, and the performance was a little more laggy.... dont know about battery life though.
question: whats the high/low threshold you guys use? by default, setting hotplug in CPUTuner sets it to 60/40. i know something like 90/98 probably saves a LOT of battery, but performance is crap. and i dont have time to do full trial n error.... lol
