Well, as the topic asks. My understanding is that the USB-loader works from userspace, correct? If so, can the knowledge gained from writing it be applied to a more permanent solution?
The loader by itself is a feat of engineering but a "real" bootloader would be epic.
Cheers and great job.

Of course I realize anything is possible, but is this a pointless pipe dream? Obviously the stock kernel means no OC.
... by the way, I haven't written code for years and when I did it fora living, it was on IBM system 390 mainframe.

The problem with 4g isn't the kernel. Its the fact that the proper RSA keys aren't passed after the bootloader is unlocked so the 4g network kicks the phone out.

I'm looking for some education here, becuase it is probable that I misunderstand.
My impression is that we do not need to unlock the bootloader when we stick with the stock kernel. Where the stock kernel is utilized, we can bootstrap and install that build, keeping the bootloader unlocked and maintaining 4G.
So, you are correct, 4G is tied to the bootloader, but if we kept the stock kernel, we wouldn't need to unlock the bootloader.
This is my line of thinking. Bootstrap to install builds which keep the stock Kernel.
As I mentioned, if this comes across as authoritative, I am honestly looking for an education.
Best regards,

I get what you're saying now, but I believe cm7 needs a cm7 kernel. There's only so much that will work with the stock kernel.

It takes more than erasing the BL and installing another more favorable one. The OTA 2.35 BL wrote to a one-time programmable fuse and inserted a value which makes it impossible to downgrade to the older version because it checks the value of the fuse. Now, if we could get the source code for that older version, its conceivable that the awesome developers we have here could mod it to skip the check on installation, and that might work. We really need a leak.

I have a great idea, get rid of the Photon, buy an S3, Gnex or some HTC, they all are great.
Thats the only way to unlock your bootloader.
This thread has a lot of info on the nature of the issue:

The only way I know of modifying either the ReservedOdm or the bootloader after it has been updated would be using NVflash, which is currently only available to Motorola.
Is rooting completely out now, even thought the boot loader is locked? Specifically, on other phones I've seen instances where a phone could be rooted even without being unlocked. Is that possible on the DNA now, after the update?
Thanks!

is it possible to put a huge red banner right where the advertisements are in this forum that reads "NO ROOT FOR 2.04" lol
Lol

That's not a bad idea... No where does it make it real clear if its just unlocking the BL or rooting too. Especially since a lot locked BL phones can be. A lot of people don't give a crap about unlocking only rooting.

Lol I understand. Really unless someone leaks an unlocked bootloader I don't see it happening quickly. With that said how impossible will kexec be lol. We got an unlocked bootloader on the gs3 thanks to a leak. The s3 had quite a few devs working on the bootloader when lucked up on the leak. It's just more realistic to use kexec for a software solution. JTAG sounds great but I don't see it being super popular.

Technically yes. But without the unlocked bootloader and direct write access to a partition (forget which...) it's only temporary and utterly pointless for what a user would need.

It worked on the gs3 with locked bootloader. It wasn't temp. I believe it is possible. Basically you boot into a second unsecure system after booting into the stock secure system.

Somewhere on the forums beaups states why it won't work. Too lazy to search...
So I've been reading and I see that developers are working on a root method for the new 4.3 update. And to these guys I want to say thank you for all your hard work! I'm curious as to whether they'll be a method to unlock the boot loader? I know about the whole ME7 ordeal, I just hope we won't see the same with this new update. Anyone know anything?

I believe it is still being looked at. With the release of note 3 probably got even more eyes on it. Though from everything I've seen posted a true unlock looks very hard if not impossible. It looks like the best will be Safestrap with kexec exploit to load custom kernels. Problem is right now no kexec exploit.

Wow. I hope it'll be possible. I've never seen a phone locked down this tight. Not even HTC. Hopefully these guys will come up with something. It would be awesome if Adam Outler could do a casual method for all builds on this device.

hello. sorry for the question but can somebody tell if anyone is working on unlocking the bootloader in devices with the status "unlock bootloader allowed:no"?
thanks
Impossible, if your boot loader comes locked there isn't anything you can do to unlock it. Best to sell it and buy one unlockable.

i know today it is impossible, has it was in my first android phone the xperia x10. what im asking if anyone is working on that or at least installing custom rooted roms with the locked bootloader...
thanks
As far as I am aware, no one will be able to unlock the bootloader ever. No one has managed it since 2011 as they're locked down tighter than....well you know.
However, people have previously found an exploit for root. That allows you to install custom roms, xposed etc but does not allow custom kernels (not a huge problem in my eyes, I've always found kernels to be slightly beneficial but also buggy if you're not an expert)
There's people working on it, but as of yet had no luck. I'm in the same boat as you, so guess it's just a waiting game.
