Ok so I just rerooted my phone so that I can make my phone a wifi hotspot for my wifi only iPad. I tried barnacle and my iPad doesn't recognize it. Now I am a little scared about trying other tethering apps because if the app adds any other fees to my bill, I am DEAD! Now just some other important info I DO have an unlimited monthly data plan.
Wireless Tether. It's on the market and its free. It has a battery drain bigger than the AC can charge at. It can also make the phone pretty hot. however, I've had no problems in using it.

+1 for wireless tether. i use it for my wi fi iPad and it works great. i do not tether for hours, usually 15-20 minutes max. it does drain the battery prettyy quickly.

Does it add any extra charges on your bill
If you have unlimited no. know that for a fact. Used 1 gb in a day and no extra charges.

if you have unlimited data you should be fine, itll only show up as data usage.

I am bamf remix 1.6.2 using the standard kernel. Will juice defender improve my battery life?
I've never used it. I'm using the updated kernel 4.4.6 OC'd all the way up on demand. Really liking the battery life.
my brother swears by juice defender on his thunderbolt but i haven't used it myself FWIW
All it really does is turn off your data connection at certain times, so yes it should improve battery life. I have never used it nor do I plan on using it. I bought a smart phone so I can always be "connected", I do not want my data connection to be cut off. But hey, if you don't mind it just might help you.

You practically will be connected almost all of the time with JuiceDefender. It will turn off you data when not in use, but you can set up an internval where the data will turn on for however long you want for it to sync data like email.
Juice Defender didn't always turn 3g back on for me and I had to reboot to get it back. I lose a lot of battery when I reboot so I uninstalled this app.
I do use juice plotter and love to use it to manage my battery life, see trends and find out what I can do to stretch my battery life when needed.
I use JD Ultimate and think it does more than simply disconnecting your data. For example you can reduce the amount of data you receive which has greatly improved my battery life when I mostly needed to use my phone for things that did not require a whole lot of data.

Ken, I am currently using Juice defender on the Tbolt and have seen some improvement, more like 5 percent an hour down with medium usage versus not having juice and dropping 10-12 percent an hour.
Still nice to have the extended battery.
I'd like to give the green power a shot as Pzy suggested.
I have had good luck with JD. Only use when I'm at work or out and about when I'm not using the phones data much and need the battery to last.

Same here. I tried juice defender and it was just OK, it added maybe an hour of usage.
But I tried the free Green Power last week and it added 4-6 hours of battery. Then I bought the full and with nightmode on, I am now at 1 day 8 hours since unplug with 23% of battery left. Display eats the lion's share, followed by phone calls.

I just grabbed the free version, and it is saying "Only Wifi management is currently supported on your phone"
I don't know if this is because i'm running CM7 or if its normal.

It works fine here but I am unrooted. I use the power widget and I can see the network and wifi turning on/off.
It might be CM7.
The disabling/re-enabling of radios was way too finicky for me, plus the fact that I didn't really notice anything but negligible gains in battery life.
I just bought the extended battery for $25 (got Verizon to give me a half-off discount) and called it a day.

It's gonna depend on how you use your phone. For the most part Juice Defender will only save your battery when your screen is off and your not using your phone. However you can set it to disable the networks when certain apps are running as well. So I guess it could save you a little if you had it set up for certain apps you use a lot that don't require a network connection (i.e. games).
I have been using Juice Defender with the stripped bamf rom and kernel. When my screen is off my battery is barely used. For example I went to bed at around 12am woke up around 6am and only lost 2% of battery.
I love JD. Yea i bought a smartphone that wants to stay connected but honestly it doesnt need to. Ive probably doubled my battery life, dropping maybe 1 percent in 3hrs, MAYBE, when its idling. I really like it. It doesnt take long for 3g to enable when i need it too, and plus i can enable it from the notification bar instantly.
Hi all
I was thinking about the possibility of using my galaxy s2 to tether my unlimited data plan via usb. however knowing that over charging the battery reduces its life.
I was thinking about making a dummy battery that links the positive and negative connectors and fooling the phone that there is a battery so I can leave it all night downloading while the battery is removed from the phone.
Any thoughts?
Will it damage my phone?
I'm pretty sure this is not a good idea. Making a "fake battery" mean short circuit the phone which is not good.
it might void your warranty
I thought the phone cuts power from the charger to the battery once it's finished charging up to 100%?
It cuts power yes, but it continuously puts some power through to "check" if it's charged. and even in the initial push to "check could be enough to fry your charge circuits.
Additionally, if the phone cuts power, you wouldn't need to remove the battery, now would you
And lastly... a small rant/commentary.
You have an unlimited data plan... Yay, happy day... using it to tether 24/7 is the reason carriers dropped unlimited plans... thanks for proving them right, and screwing the rest of us LMAO.

dude, I pay about 11% of my salary for this unlimited data plan.
I thought, what's up with having such a great phone without unlimited data?
I want to utilize it but the phone is power hungry and when 3G is on it drinks battery juice so fast.
anyway, so it's not possible to make a dummy batter and link the (+) and (-).
so I guess the only option is to buy a new battery and use it only to tether, even if its cells are screaming for mercy, I have my other battery to use normally.
damn paid a lot of money, still have to pay more -_-
thanks for the help guys.

First, you need a raise
LOL
Second, I was poking fun man, if any carrier in Canada offered unlimited data anymore, I'd be all over that like stink on a monkey, no matter what the cost, I average 5.5gigs a month with email, music and video... (also bearing in mind I'm on WiFi for 7 or 8 hours a day too. LOL)
I get 1GB free a month from Meteor in Ireland which is good although only a promotion so they could pull the plug at any time and im back to 50MB @ 69 cents a day, however when im in the UK i use a Giff Gaff SIM,they are incredibly cheap the cheapest in the UK, for £10 you can get 250 minutes, unlimited texts and truly unlimited data although no tethering allowed.
As regards the OP's question - not a good idea if you ask me you'll end up frying your phone in the long run.
I love the free WiFi Tether app but it drains my battery even while using the wall charger. Anyone else experiencing this? Any solutions?

Turn down the transmission (Tx) power if you don't mind losing a little bit of signal. This is irrelevant if your device(s) are within close proximity to the phone anyway.

Ok, I'll give it a try. Do you also experience battery drain even while charging when using full transmission power?
Mine works without drain. When I'm gonna use it for a long time I lay it on an ice pack to avoid heating.

Depends what else I'm doing. If you minimize power consumption otherwise (screen off, only 3G on, end background apps such as music streaming or navigation), you should be about even with power draw/charge. Note that if you use 4G to tether wirelessly (after rooting), that will drain more battery than its 3G counterpart. The stock charger is rated at 850mA so there really should not be any issues.

I looked around the Settings in Wifi Tether for this but didn't find anything about the Tx power. Are you referring to the phone's Tx power?
I finally did a real test of this app while traveling this weekend and it felt overheated to the touch. I had it plugged into my computer via USB cable and it wasn't charging b/c it was so hot.
Is the Tx power reduction the best way to help this heating problem? I was really disappointed that the battery stopped keeping a charge and only after a few minutes, literally just about 10 minutes of running the tether app. This is the same thing that happened on my Touch Pro and I was hoping that this wouldn't happen when I upgraded to Android!

Thanks for the heads up, I see there's a little section for transmission power there. That said, after I install it, it says I have the ability to change Access Control, whatever that means.
Also, It doesn't appear to have a WPA Encryption method. I am not a fan of WEP. Is this an ongoing development that will eventually add WPA? I looked for a FAQ but it doesn't exist anymore.
can any of you guide me through these smart actions....because even after the help videos and all, i still dont really understand how the triggers and actions work....i dont think im getting nearly the battery time i should out of this phone.....i have to put it on the charger at least 2 or three times out the day for a little while and by 10-11 oclock its still down to about 30-40 percent....and im hearing people getting almost 2 days on a full battery...not me!! so please help
oh....and what would the correct battery level to put on charger be ?? is 20 to low?
I don't use the smart actions app myself, but I have the maxx and get a day and a half or so between charges on average.
A couple of questions for you though:
Which razr do you have, how much are you on it in a typical day (calls, text, web surf, games, mobile hotspot, etc.)
The reason I ask this is for you to ask yourself "what is really killing my battery" to help you figure out how your phone ticks a little better, and to say if its not maxx, the battery life isn't really gonna be all that great if you're using it all the time.
I work 12 hours a day, 5 days a week, so during the week, I'll typically go 2 to 3 days between charges because I don't use it much, too busy. On the weekends, it will barely make it 5 hours between charges because it provides internet for my ps3 so I can slay the undead all weekend long!
Process all that for a minute, figure out your usage pattern, then figure out what you need to change to get better battery life. And of course, never leave the house without your charger, just in case.
Hope this helps

Oh yea, like a freakin champ. My wife and I live in a hotel for the time being because we just moved. Hotel wifi will get maybe 2mbps down, if I'm lucky to stay connected to it at all. The maxx 4g, anywhere from 4 to 6mbps down (megabytes, not bits). Take into account the occasional storm to screw with the signal a little, other than that its solid all the way.
Hell I've been wifi tethering my game systems since I had the dinc, although 3g gaming sucked a fat one!
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
Seens like 3g-edge connection it is the main battery drain problem on razr.
At wifi, my razr lasts at least 1 day and a half. With 3g /auto sync turned on all the time, my battery last about to 16 hours with normal use.
So, I did the follow script on smart actions and my battery lasts around 1 day at least.
Open smart actions and add 24 time lapses: 00:00 - 00:45, 01-00 - 01-45, 02:00 - 02:45 and go on... do it for every hour.
Then, the trigger: "Screen turned off" and all the time lapses.
Then, actions: "Mobile data, turned off".
With this script, when your screen is turned off, the mobile data from 3g is going to be turned off too from 45 min every hour. And going to be on for 15 min every hour.
When you turn your screen on, the 3g data going to turn on.
The script do not affect your wifi connection.
Sorry about the bad english. Hope this helps.
Ever since I got my SGS3 last year, I noticed that WiFi would drain battery rather than save battery. For whatever reason I always got better battery life with WiFi off rather than on.
I noticed a lot more wake locks too. I don't know if it was because with a solid WiFi conneciton, apps tend to refresh a lot more than they normally do.
Enter the HTC One. I have noticed the same type of effects. I've only had it for 2 days but I am noticing better battery life without it.
So I want to collect some data using a poll. Do you get better battery life with it on or off?

It goes inactive, but it doesn't actually get 'turned off'. If I don't have it turned off, what happens is when my wifi goes to sleep then mobile data goes back on. I don't want that.
of course you get better battery with Wifi turned off. but doesn't Wifi consume less battery than cellular data? my balance is to keep Wifi on ANYTIME i'm in a trusted wireless network and manually toggle off cellular data when I'm using Wifi.
It burns battery when it isn't connected and on but I get better battery with it on and connected
