[Q] Meego on the X10 - XPERIA X10 Android Development

Hey guys,
Would it be possible to install the ARM version of the cellphone version of meego in the same way the ARM version of ubuntu was installed on the X10? I'm no hacker or something like that so I don't know if this is a stupid question or not
BTW, I know this is the ANDROID development forum, but this seemed like the best place to post this question to me, if it isn't, feel free to put it somewhere else

It can only be considered once the bootloader is cracked

Your question is on the correct subforum, don't worry for that
In theory, it could be possible, but it's not viable in practice. MeeGo looks quite promising, however, the source has been optimized for the N900 which uses a Texas Instruments cpu, and X10 uses a Qualcomm. So first, you would need an adapted kernel, based on the x10 source, remove all the android patches and patch to allow meego to boot in there. You would also need to alter a pretty big bunch of libraries, and the most you'd get it is to boot. No sound, no touchscreen, of course no phone, not anything but the bare system.
Keep in mind there are lots of things on an Android phone that aren't opensource, and these libraries are what in the end make the device work "as a phone". It's a shame since meego looks quite good, I've tried it on a Clarion Mind (ivi image) and a netbook (netbook img) and looks nice.
So, in the end, possible? yes with a looot of effort. Useful for daily usage? not at all

But the bootloader doesn't need to get cracked or something like that, because that wasn't the way I was thinking of installing it, I wanted to let it run on top of Android, so android is running, you start meego over it using terminal and see the meego desktop using a VNCclient. That's the way it has been done with Ubuntu (and yes, ubuntu works on the X10, I have it installed myself on the phone)

Care to share how did you installed it?

I'll make a topic on how to install it on the x10

[Q] Porting Android for Nokia

First: I am a absolute n00b
I want to learn about porting Android for Nokia phones. I want to do something like porting Android for Nokia 5233/5228 phone, which my friend has. I saw its specifications and found that It has got NAND memory, external SD card support, It runs on ARM11 processor.
I tried to do some searching and found Android supports ARM Architecture, so I think the porting is possible (may be difficult). I then headed to the Android site and tried to learn about porting, but I couldn't make out much out of it.
Can someone on this forum help me out. Even if there is no direct solution, I would be happy with learning how to port the OS. May be there is no solution to the thing I am talking about, still you could help me learn porting.
P.S: Kindly don't post something like "What you talk is impossible, get out of this thing." I am serious in learning things.

hey buddy lots of people want to port android to s60v5 phones.
the thing is that firstly symbian doesn't allows any other os so you need dediated separate external hardware to wipe symbian off the nokia phone then you have to be prepared to port android to it.
Keep this thing in mind that you need to convert all the necessary files to the resolution of the nokia phones.
if you wanna run an application then also yo need to convert it to your native resolution only..
its gonna be a quite tiresome job.
i wish you all the best...
well, then i guess porting a QVGA version of android on to a QVGA Nokia Device (like the C5) or a landscape QVGA (say, from Galaxy Pro) on to a Landscape QVGA symbian device could ease things off a bit?
not so easy..
Its nearly impossible to replace symbian from nokia...
Not starting
my phone is not sarting after installing nopkia evolve

The resolution would be the least of his problems. The real problem is. Android needs source. Although you could just hope that, for example, an android version for Samsung Galaxy Ace would work. If it doesn't work. You have a completely wiped phone that is basically a bricked one.
Then there are the problems of incompatible components. While Nokia build their software with that phone in mind, the components work together nicely. Android on the other hand was built for Nexus Phones. And since there is no open source OS from Nokia that I know of, you can't copy over drivers.

Dual Boot/Multi boot on NT - Android+(windows/linux/other tablet OS)

I'm wondering if it is possible to Dual Boot/Multi Boot Nook Tablet?
e.g. Android + Windows (of course the one for Tablets) OR Linux OR even iOS OR any other?
Anyone interested?
I can be part of this development, though i'm newbie in android world and mostly i'm playing with MatLab, C, C++, Jave (very less) etc. But i think i still can be useful somehow and i am also ready to use my NT for development/testing purpose (provided that i get some solution of backup/restore with apps installed)
thanks
I would consider looking up this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21323255
Adam provides a little bit of insight about dual booting from sdcard and more!

windows 8 doesn't work on the Nook. Only the devices which come out with windows 8 can actually run windows 8. ios also doesn't work because there's no source code out there. Linux is under development, I think it's Adam Outler who does that.
yes, for windows/ios, may not possible but i think, linux is possible. i have been going through the threads. actually due to some hardware issues, like processor etc. NT can't be generalized. also, even with rooting, we are still far behind in using its true capabilities.
CM9 is on it's way. Currently sound doesn't work, the kernel paniks sometimes and some minor bugs are the problems for the devs.
well, looking forward for CM9. i hope it will give more freedom than existing root...
I looking forward for CM7, maybe alpha version will be release few next days.

Full Unix to replace phone?

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I moved on to another phone a while ago. But I have always loved my Atrix... Has anyone ever thought about seeing what kind of linux unit our phones could be? I mean, minimal phone code & use both processors for Ubuntu or whatever popular arm linux is available.
My main deal here is that the phone w/ the lapdock has always been an awesome wifi terminal. I just feel like half of it's processor is wasted running the phone UI. Anyone have any plans for a full linux Atrix project?
& yes, I already have ubuntop on my Atrix & have had it since it came out.
& yes, I know Canonical has already stated they are working on Ubuntu for phones, but the stench of their Vaporware is hurting.
It all comes down to the kernel. With the limited support we have for our device, it's hard enough trying to run android on the thing (ICS); an operating system which is "native" for phones, it'll be that much harder to port desktop Linux. Standard Linux kernel is starting to come with android stuff, but it's still going to need device specific patches.
Now if ubuntu comes out with a universal arm/tegra kernel, that would be kind of amazing.

[Q] Anybody building Ubuntu For Android?

Since early 2012 when Canonical announced Ubuntu for Android I've been drooling and waiting for the perfect tablet to install it on. Now I have Tablet Z, but find out there's very little written or said about Ubuntu for Android since last year.
Does anybody know if the source codes were released? Whether it's even possible to port it to Tablet Z? If something similar will be coming?
I don't really want to go with Ubuntu Touch (not that anyone is dev-ing for it on this device), I'd ideally want android base and proper Ubuntu desktop when docked to a monitor.
It's difficult to believe this dream combo of mobile device and computer being one was so close over a year ago, but is still so far.

Sadly no it has become vapourware nothing as ever been released, but if you looking to run ubuntu and android at the same time, check out my sig.
Our project (LinuxonAndroid) aims to do the same type of thing as "Ubuntu for android", but not limited to just Ubuntu!

I've tried to run this on my tablet and it didn't work, i believe that the problem was related to kernel not supporting loop devices (I was rooted) and there is only one custom kernel but is not for all the devices so it's harder to do this but of course easier than porting ubuntu touch lol.

But yes adjusting my project to run on the Z will be much easier than porting ubuntu touch for sure

That sounds great, i hope you can achieve that because a 10.1 tablet with Full HD+ running ubuntu with a bluetooth keyboard that would be very helpful for running advance applications.

This is what I've been using actually. I even donated so I can use the widgets.
The problem I have with it is that the GUI is laggy through the VNC, I was hoping for something as smooth looking as in the videos from last year. Perhaps you can make a recommendation on how to improve performance? A lighter package perhaps?
Also, I was hoping to install a local web server and IDE for working when travelling (I develop Ruby on Rails apps), not tried it yet, is it going to be waste of time trying or should i just suck it and see?

This does work on stock kernel. As I say above, I use it on a completely stock ROM/Kernel. I did experience what looked like loop incompatibility but it disappeared when I re-downloaded the img. Can't remember if I tried a different image but anyway, I got it to work on stock.

The refresh rate in android VNC is not great. It makes work slow. Not done any real work from the command line yet, in fact, not done anything serious with it yet. I'll try to load a rails environment on it later.

Then there is hope for me yet.
If you want any other screens just say. I found using an org mouse/keyboard gives the impression of more responsive interface but it still on the slow side. Maybe I'm spoilt by my haswell i5 with 12GB RAM.

Oh so you already has a haswell, that's nice. I've a Macbook Pro Retina 15.4 with 8GB RAM and Core i7 third generation + 512GB SSD mid 2012, but well i want a haswell because the power saving features!
And yes, you should be able to run RoR on it, and get a working environment, it's good to have a backup work system lol.
Also it sucks that even using a local connection is giving you slow refresh rates.
Check this: Oracle Java for ARM i don't use java at all but some of my preferred IDEs are based on java, like PyCharm, WebStore, etc. it would be amazing if we can run those things on our mobile device.

Will jetson tk1 run android os?

Hi i've seen the jetson tk1 a k1 processor development board, now i know it runs linux fine but i want it for android gaming. So i am wondering if anyone own one and/or can tell me should i buy it for the sole purpose of android os gaming,i am concerned of shelling out 200 pounds for a device i may never be able to run android os on.I can't help but think there's a catch like a lack of a chip or something potentialy hindering the chances of loading an android rom on it.I'm debating getting it next fortnights time if anyone thinks it can be and definately will be done i'm sold.

Yes, modifying the linux kernel for ubuntu to run android was quite easy, took less than an hour...
Rootfs was even easier, took 15 minutes....
booted first try...
But getting Cuda in android will have to wait for official Nvidia support.

Hi, im also interested in Android for Jetson TK1 (I already ordered one, I like Ubuntu very much but it doesnt have many games compatible with ARM). If I understood well, you have booted Android on it? You can post it maybe on Nvidia developer forums dedicated for jtk1 or make thread here on xda? Thanks
