Hi i've seen the jetson tk1 a k1 processor development board, now i know it runs linux fine but i want it for android gaming. So i am wondering if anyone own one and/or can tell me should i buy it for the sole purpose of android os gaming,i am concerned of shelling out 200 pounds for a device i may never be able to run android os on.I can't help but think there's a catch like a lack of a chip or something potentialy hindering the chances of loading an android rom on it.I'm debating getting it next fortnights time if anyone thinks it can be and definately will be done i'm sold.

Yes, modifying the linux kernel for ubuntu to run android was quite easy, took less than an hour...
Rootfs was even easier, took 15 minutes....
booted first try...
But getting Cuda in android will have to wait for official Nvidia support.

Hi, im also interested in Android for Jetson TK1 (I already ordered one, I like Ubuntu very much but it doesnt have many games compatible with ARM). If I understood well, you have booted Android on it? You can post it maybe on Nvidia developer forums dedicated for jtk1 or make thread here on xda? Thanks

There is a noob guide on xda featuring instructions for building your first android ROM. That however doesnt mean Jetson TK1 could bave Android ROM from that guide

Hey guys,
Would it be possible to install the ARM version of the cellphone version of meego in the same way the ARM version of ubuntu was installed on the X10? I'm no hacker or something like that so I don't know if this is a stupid question or not
BTW, I know this is the ANDROID development forum, but this seemed like the best place to post this question to me, if it isn't, feel free to put it somewhere else
It can only be considered once the bootloader is cracked

Your question is on the correct subforum, don't worry for that
In theory, it could be possible, but it's not viable in practice. MeeGo looks quite promising, however, the source has been optimized for the N900 which uses a Texas Instruments cpu, and X10 uses a Qualcomm. So first, you would need an adapted kernel, based on the x10 source, remove all the android patches and patch to allow meego to boot in there. You would also need to alter a pretty big bunch of libraries, and the most you'd get it is to boot. No sound, no touchscreen, of course no phone, not anything but the bare system.
Keep in mind there are lots of things on an Android phone that aren't opensource, and these libraries are what in the end make the device work "as a phone". It's a shame since meego looks quite good, I've tried it on a Clarion Mind (ivi image) and a netbook (netbook img) and looks nice.
So, in the end, possible? yes with a looot of effort. Useful for daily usage? not at all

But the bootloader doesn't need to get cracked or something like that, because that wasn't the way I was thinking of installing it, I wanted to let it run on top of Android, so android is running, you start meego over it using terminal and see the meego desktop using a VNCclient. That's the way it has been done with Ubuntu (and yes, ubuntu works on the X10, I have it installed myself on the phone)
Care to share how did you installed it?
I'll make a topic on how to install it on the x10

Do you mean got ubuntu and android in multi-boot ?
Since early 2012 when Canonical announced Ubuntu for Android I've been drooling and waiting for the perfect tablet to install it on. Now I have Tablet Z, but find out there's very little written or said about Ubuntu for Android since last year.
Does anybody know if the source codes were released? Whether it's even possible to port it to Tablet Z? If something similar will be coming?
I don't really want to go with Ubuntu Touch (not that anyone is dev-ing for it on this device), I'd ideally want android base and proper Ubuntu desktop when docked to a monitor.
It's difficult to believe this dream combo of mobile device and computer being one was so close over a year ago, but is still so far.

Sadly no it has become vapourware nothing as ever been released, but if you looking to run ubuntu and android at the same time, check out my sig.
Our project (LinuxonAndroid) aims to do the same type of thing as "Ubuntu for android", but not limited to just Ubuntu!

I've tried to run this on my tablet and it didn't work, i believe that the problem was related to kernel not supporting loop devices (I was rooted) and there is only one custom kernel but is not for all the devices so it's harder to do this but of course easier than porting ubuntu touch lol.

That sounds great, i hope you can achieve that because a 10.1 tablet with Full HD+ running ubuntu with a bluetooth keyboard that would be very helpful for running advance applications.

This is what I've been using actually. I even donated so I can use the widgets.
The problem I have with it is that the GUI is laggy through the VNC, I was hoping for something as smooth looking as in the videos from last year. Perhaps you can make a recommendation on how to improve performance? A lighter package perhaps?
Also, I was hoping to install a local web server and IDE for working when travelling (I develop Ruby on Rails apps), not tried it yet, is it going to be waste of time trying or should i just suck it and see?

This does work on stock kernel. As I say above, I use it on a completely stock ROM/Kernel. I did experience what looked like loop incompatibility but it disappeared when I re-downloaded the img. Can't remember if I tried a different image but anyway, I got it to work on stock.

The refresh rate in android VNC is not great. It makes work slow. Not done any real work from the command line yet, in fact, not done anything serious with it yet. I'll try to load a rails environment on it later.

If you want any other screens just say. I found using an org mouse/keyboard gives the impression of more responsive interface but it still on the slow side. Maybe I'm spoilt by my haswell i5 with 12GB RAM.

Oh so you already has a haswell, that's nice. I've a Macbook Pro Retina 15.4 with 8GB RAM and Core i7 third generation + 512GB SSD mid 2012, but well i want a haswell because the power saving features!
And yes, you should be able to run RoR on it, and get a working environment, it's good to have a backup work system lol.
Also it sucks that even using a local connection is giving you slow refresh rates.
Check this: Oracle Java for ARM i don't use java at all but some of my preferred IDEs are based on java, like PyCharm, WebStore, etc. it would be amazing if we can run those things on our mobile device.
As the title suggests, from the specs the device is given. This should be possible. Since the tablet is just now coming out, there are few forums for it. Even the Nvidia forums don't have a section for it, let alone XDA's forum. Which is why this is under modding.
The Nvidia Shield Tablet meets the Windows 8.1 requirements and uses intel chipsets. It's not a matter of if as much as when. Which is my request to the devs. Make the tablet either dual boot windows 8.1 and android or a full install of windows 8.1
Best of luck to you all.

At 2:39, you get the kernal build number that comes in the stock tablet. I know very little about kernals so I leave that to your discretion.
If anyone has any comments or relevant information to help developers with pushing a windows build into the tablet please feel free speak.
Are there any forums on xda for the Shield Tablet? Its running android, and its most likely rootable.

Wait wait wait. The Shield Tablet has Intel chipsets? So I can run Desktop mode and say install Steam and play lower end games if this became feasible? I'm almost positive already that Nvidia said that the Tegra K1 has DirectX capabilities, I would LOVE to play games like Halo PC and other lower end titles on this tablet! Especially if someone made drivers that recognized the Shield Controller as an XInput device!
Which is why I started this thread. To see what the devs have to say about this. If there is any chance XDA devs can do this, it will almost certainly change the scope of gaming at home and on the go.
On a side note, there are already videos of the tegra K1 running the dolphin emulator. While previous K1 devices could only run games to a certain extent, over at the Dolphin forums the devs there are already discussing full speed emulation with almost all Gamecube games and some Wii games. For Dolphin it comes down to CPU strength since both consoles only run on 1 core. While the tablet is quad core, the software can't connect to the other 2 cores due to information process paths which leaves 1 core(They managed 2 cores as an option, not sure how) The Dolphin emu needs to atleast 2 times that to run gamecube(485mhz) games and 4 times for the Wii(800 mhz). The Nvidia Tablet is a 2ghz. Which just isn't strong enough to run wii games. So getting Windows ported over is important for overclocking the cpu efficiently to a level Wii games can handle, and pc games a bonus.
Nope, nope, nope.
Hey, guys. I just randomly ran across this thread, and I wanted to let you know that the reason why nobody has ported Windows 8 to the nVidia shield tablet is that it uses an ARM processor. Yes, this processor is made by Intel, but it is an Intel MOBILE processor, not a full x86 architecture processor.
So, although it may take some reading for you to understand the basic incompatibilities here, I will tell you that running Windows 8 on this thing is not possible in any universe. The only Windows OS which will run on an ARM processor is Windows RT. But everyone hates Windows RT, and not a single Windows RT device has been made since 2013.
However, on a happier note, Android 5.0 Lollipop does add support for x86 and 64bit processors. So, a future in which we have dual booting Windows 8 / Android tablets is not unfeasible.
Hey XDA! This is my first post so bear with me...
Recently Acer announced their new Tegra K1 Chromebook and I have to say it's pretty intriguing. I really want to buy one, my only problem being Chrome OS. Don't get me wrong, I love it, it's just not robust enough for me. I want to really make use of the K1 by playing more high end games like ones for Android that are more optimized for it. Touchscreen not being a huge issue here. I'd use a PS3 controller of course. Plus with all the apps already developed for the Droid platform it makes a lot more sense than web based Chrome OS.
So, question time.....
Do you think it would be possible to install KitKat or maybe even Android L Beta on a system like this? I have researched it a little and the Tegra uses ARMv7 architecture. I don't know a whole lot about what that means, but as far as I understand it's 64-bit not 32. Does that mean I would have to use a special KitKat OS on this? Also how in the world would I go about doing this? I have successfully installed Ubuntu (I think 12.04) on an older Samsung Chromebook which dual boots both Ubuntu and Chrome OS; however, I am not sure that the steps involved would be the same. Seeing as how this is a fairly new device, Google is of no help whatsoever....
EXTRA, EXTRA!
Would it be possible to make Android the default OS so it auto boots without going to the OS verification screen?
Thanks for reading! Really hope I can get some answers, looking forward to doing some "real" gaming on the cheap!
I'm wondering if anyone is interested in a guide to getting Linux running on the Nexus 9.
I've got a base system running with fbdev as a rendering output. With a bit of work I'm sure someone could get Nouveau running as a hardware accelerated video driver.
I posted a tweet with an image of it running Ubuntu core + i3 window manager.

I am on the fence about getting a n9 (one for me and one for the gf), been hearing quite mixed reviews and its a pretty steep price point. That said I would love to read your guide on this and maybe even look to it as a project. Plus I love me some installation tutorials-- seriously.
I was just thinking about doing this. I'm keen to see this guide too. :good::good:
I, for one, would love to have a native linux distro running on the N9.
I would love to get a guide on this. I've tried and failed to get Ubuntu running using the Linux on Android installer app. The Linux Deploy app works, but the resulting Ubuntu has no software centre or even a web browser.
Count me in. Will gonna follow your guide as soon as i buy a Nexus 9
Very interested in this, @sonicadvance1.
Thanks for all the hard work you do.

Any chance for a standard window manager such as xdm or heck maybe even cinnamon (mdm) running on the nexus 9. Nvidias chip in there has 2 cortex A57 I mean they are just plain speed demons. Also besides Ubuntu do you think I could port your guide to opensuse as they have Armel v7 images too...
and I am still more than willing to give linux a shot... Also do you think there will ever be a possibility of a Dual Boot option?
