[Q] Please help! Unable to install any ROM - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I posted this in the general forum but I think its best be in here. Sorry to the mods for placing it in the wrong place. Please delete the other one.
I am trying to reinstall KaosFroyo on my HTC Eris via ClockworkMOD and I am getting a error that says
E:Can't symlink /system/xbin/arp
E:Failure at line 65:
I have tried multiple other roms and I formated my SD card and wiped everything. I am thinking I need to do something with adb or flashing another clockwork recovery?? I am not sure
I have included the ClockworkMOD recovery.log.
Any ideas??

Search is down or something. I had the same problem they told me that Clockwork and the eris dont get along. Long story short I tried many different things and eventually the phone just completely bricked. I would say check the checksum on the rom to make sure it doesn't have any errrors and let me try and find my post about it and see if we have the exact same issue or not
Edit: Looks like our issues are slightly different take a look through there maybe?

ok I hope its not bricked!!

ok i looked at that thread but not sure which step I need to take can you help?
the only recovery I can get into is the clockwork one

Dumb answer here have you tried a different rom or re downloading the one you have. I am as much a noobie as you. Do you have a boot loader with S-on or S-off?
Edit: for Sh*ts and giggles what rom are u trying to flash??

As a rule, Clockwork recovery is not recommended on the Eris. It causes many problems, and yours may be one of them. Amon recovery is much safer. You probably need to search about replacing Clockwork with Amon...I think there is actually a thread out here to tell you how that's done.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760080

ok i did that and now whenever i install a rom I get assert failed:write_raw_image.. and something about my sd card
Could my sd card be bad????

Could be just a bad download. MD5 the zip file on your sdcard.

Ummm actually technically this is wrong section to. This isn't Q&A section.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

May be a dumb question, but did you wipe data and dalvik before trying to flash a new rom?
You said you were using clockwork before (which I know very little about), but do you have any (amon ra created) nandroids that you could flash? Perhaps you created one when you first rooted.
If all else fails, try unrooting and rerooting your phone.

I would say the SD card may need to be mounted and formatted (or possibly unformatted) in recovery if the ROM you are trying to use requires it. That is, before you flash the new ROM. I would say though that you will lose data when you prep the SD card from recovery

ok i swapped out with a new sd card and still same issues. It gives an error about busybox so i want to know how to use adb and flash busybox can anybody tell me how I can do that?

OK, what ROM are you trying to Flash and what did you flash over? I am using KaosFroyov34...busybox is included. I think a previous poster is correct...I think you need to do a full wipe, a Dalvik wipe and them reinstall your ROM.

Yes it is....

ok while i am waiting for v34 to download i have been doing some reading about this and it seems like it only happens when the system partition gets full.

Well, first you need to know what you need to get rid of, then you need something like root explorer to mount R/W and delete the files. I'd be very careful about doing this, and someone more experienced than me will have to tell you how to do it better/faster. My guess as to why it's full though is flashing a different ROM over another (say Kaos over Tazz) without wiping. Because different ROMS use different install scripts, you wind up leaving leaving files that needed to be deleted. When you go from one version of a ROM to another of the same ROM, the scripts usually knows what to delete, replace, etc.

I need help installing Obsidian

I am trying to install the new Obsidian based on froyo 2.2 with the Samsung Vibrant. I rooted it using the one click root and downloaded ROM manager. When I try to back up my current ROM the phone reboots and says E: Can't open /cache/update.zip (bad) Installation aborted.
Because of this I cannot install the Obsidian ZIP file because the same error message pops up.
redownload rom and dont use rom manager, it will erase your internal sd card. Use clockwork recovery and then flash a fresh downloaded obsidian rom

I use ROM Manager like 50 times a day and my SD card never gets wiped.
is clockwork recovery within ROM manager? So i click on Reboot into recovery or Flash ClockworkMod Recovery? Thanks for the help also.
Wait, is this your first time flashing a ROM? Walk us through what you've done so far.
I'm guessing you had your USB plugged in, and didn't get a good flash of clockwork. Unplug your USB, go into clockwork, and flash the latest version of clockwork. Then reboot, go back into clockwork, try to backup and see what you get
Here is what I did:
1. One-click root
2. Download ROM Manager from market
3. Downloaded Obsidian and placed it on my SD card via USB
4. Opened ROM Manager and clicked Backup current ROM, which is where i got the error message that /cache/update.zip could not be read
5. Tried to install obsidian by clicking Install ROM from SD Card and choosing the obsidian that I put on my SD card and I get the error saying /cache/update.zip could not be read (bad) installation aborted.
FIRST WRONG SECTION
notw thats out of the way, In Rom manager click reboot into recovery, then if you have blue text on your screen click reinstall packages, thenmanually pick thee rom to flash from the other (green text) recovery
PS WRONG SECTION
Iuse think free office. Navigate to download folder. Click the zip. Hit Clockworkmod recovery. Ok. Ok. Now let it do its thing. Enjoy. Personally I don't like it.. im back to fusion... didn't like lack of black. and double tap features... big down sides for me... and twiz.. so I'm back to fusion1.2... and LOVE IT! Only one to beat it is Bionix themselves and I'm waiting very patiently!

Was your USB mounted to your computer when you clicked "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" in ROM Manager? That will cause the error you have.
If so, disconnect from the computer, reboot, launch ROM manager, flash clockworkmod, and then try to backup your current ROM again.

One in the same here brother. Read my posts before. I'll try to help you through here, but you are in the wrong section, and this post isn't long for this world. A couple tips for you:
1) Read up on these programs you are using. Thankfully you're dealing with a mostly unbrickable phone, but I don't think anyone here is looking forward to walking you through an Odin recovery. You can **** stuff up. Write that down on a piece of paper in front of you.
2) Read the forum guidelines. People will be a lot nicer if you post in the correct forum.
Ok, sorry for not posting in the appropriate forum. I think I got it and my mistake was not flashing clockwork because when I backup my current ROM I no longer get that error. Right now I am using Titanium Backup to backup my stuff and then I am going to try the Obsidian flash again.. but does the Titanium Backup save my text messages?

Good, good. A bad clockwork flash is the only thing I've ever seen cause that error message. At least you've given a good google reference for other people that mess that up.
I've never used Titanium backup for anything other than app backup, so I don't know about texts. I believe it can be done, but I don't know what to select. Maybe take a look in the market? I think there are some SMS backup apps there if that's all you're concerned about.
OP -
I had the exact same problem as you, and I tried everything. Surprisingly enough, what fixed it for me was how I copied the ROM zip file to the phone. When I mounted the phone to the computer and dragged and dropped, I got the error. I had tried copying the file at least 3 or 4 times this way, and I always got the error. The error went away when I decided to try an ADB push of the zip file to the Internal memory card. I still don't know why it fixed it for me, but it's worth a try.

Wrong section dude. But um when you said u only opened rom manager to press back up current rom?..if so you got that error cause the wrong update.zip is on the root of sd...go back to rom, manager and click flack cwm click allow when it asks for root,n then pick the vibrant one.
OP - Do not worry about backing up your current ROM. You are going to 2.2 and your ROM now is 2.1. IF you decide to go back to a 2.1 ROM flash an all new one (ie. Bionix Fusion or Final) that comes with a 2.1 Kernel. If you try to go to your backed up ROM though Rom manager without getting a new kernel you will soft brick your phone, and as you stated this is your first try, a soft brick can be a little scary. To be on the safe side delete your backup in your phone now so you won't forget and be tempted to go back to that old ROM without the proper kernel installed and ready to be flashed also in your phone. Just wanted throw that out there for ya!

Maybe it's a noob question, but after update to 2.2, how do I revert all the apps and games I have currently on Bionix 1.1. I can reinstall them, but what about save states? Any way to transfer that when update is done to Froyo, or we always need to start from scratch on every new update?

Can't Flash Roms or zip files in CWM...Need help

The problem started when after I flashed the recovery with Odin. When I booted into the recovery and tried to install the superuser zip file I keep getting this message: "E:cant copy META-INF/google/android/update-binary". I get this message when I try to flash a Rom: "E:Can't open /sdcard/update-unamed-1.3.1-full.zip". I've been trying to flash the CM7 nightlies and the "Unamed" Rom. Any help with this will be much appreciated.
Also, I ended up having to install superuser via SuperOneClick
Honestly, I stopped trying after the phone kept confusing me with SD Card, External Card, and Internal Card/External SD Card BS it was giving me.
I just left my phone rooted, lol.
Sometimes, this tends to happen if you rooted your phone with an anti-virus software running on your PC which can hinder the rooting process. (always the case with my HTC Inspire 4G). So turning it off could allow you to re-download Odin, and run the program again to root it again so it can install the proper files.
Once you get it re-rooted, get into CWM, do a backup, and Clear your Cache, Data and reinstall the ROM from your Internal Card or External Card (which ever you used to place the ROM in).
Good luck.

CWM and root are not even related....
root is root access to your OS /system and its functions. it has nothing to do with RECOVERY or anything outside of a RUNNING OS. i wish everyone would understand that.
as long as CWM is there, AND WORKING PROPERLY, rooting has nothing to do with it. you can flash a new rom from bone stock OS, as long as you have the CWM kernel.
@OP, you have these files (roms) located on the INTERNAL SD right?
I think that's why @homescrub said:
"and run the program again to root it again so it can install the proper files."
Proper files being cwm. As of yet I don't know of a way to install cwm without root on this phone. I know the captivate previously allowed an update to be flashed using stock recovery to get cwm.

how do you flash CWM?
through ODIN
that does NOT require root. you dont flash it via ROM manager....so whats the need for root to add CWM?
and what is this 'proper files' crap? you either have CWM or you dont, its not half-assed
nah its cool. im done here. i will let the misinformation fly. let the noobs run in circles. this website is going to **** so fast these days.
No man ....you should help these guys....just lighten up...and I apologize for coming off like that.....and one place I CAN understand is seeing what's going on in the forums....it is chaos sometimes.....I am just tired of seeing noobs who need help get ripped up.....just as much as I am tired seeing noobs posting +1 and Great Job, in the Dev forums. I just think this is the place to help them get a good understanding so there is not another new thread with this same question.

[Resolved] Decided to root; I failed

Hello!
My GT-i9100T is my first android phone, I've been using for two months and I love it. This afternoon I decided to root my phone (I have never rooted or installed a custom ROM on this phone before) using this method, and I downloaded all the files and followed all instructions. When I selected 'apply update from external storage' it took a little while and gave me this error: 'E:unable to mount /sdcard (No such file or Directory)'.
I searched online but I couldn't find anything helpful but I did factory reset my phone and yet it still didn't work. Can anyone help me?

i think u should have put the files in ur internal sdcard not external, please check by doing so and see
ps - alternatively u can put the file's in ur cache folder and select 2 install the same from cache in recovery and see
Thanks for the swift reply!
I don't have an external SD card and I've never used one.
EDIT: I can't do that because the cache folder is inaccessible.

You need a physical external sdcard in order for this to work.
If you're in need of root just flash a CF-Root kernel..

I did the exact same thing with rom manager on the NT. :< There should be big flashing warning signs that say "DONT DO THIS IF YOU'RE TIRED"
I wound up having to ADB to the device, completely wipe the partition table with gdisk, then rebuild it. However, the scripts to acutally format it werent avaliable anymore (Dropbox account was banned) so I then had to use the Ubuntu restore method to go from there.
I did loose the ability to run the B&N Factory ROM (wont pass registration anymore)
but at least the tablet is useable.
Dont give up, from what I understand, unless you physically BREAK the tablet in some way, its nearly always recoverable!

Personally. I wouldnt mess with Rom Manager. That's what bricked my tablet, too.
Just make an SD card with the CWM bootables (I posted a link in your other post about noob questions) and install roms/etc from there.
I think that's what's killing my gnex!
*This Jedi master be a Ninj-ESS*
hrm i missed it? (the other thead link to bootable cym)? i did try to repartition once on another bootable build but the cym did not like it... even after reinserting it
i had that problem before because i accidently formatted the 1gb user partition while in cm7...
this link saved me. try it out!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513583
still bricked. *tried* to use rom manager to install the "stock recovery" but it still boots to a "cardboard box".......
starting to think the partitions are whacked...
what is the best partition recovery guide ??
looking at this link...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22157605&postcount=25
but the bootable cwm is not loading...grr
If I am correct you are still trying all of this from inside a bootable cm7 card, right?
Instead, try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25786947
With that hopefully you can get a bootable cwm recovery image.
From there you should be able to install CM7.
I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH. DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER.
I honestly think it is most of your problems

S3 stuck on the samsung icon - even after flashing rescue firmware

Hello.
My s3 recently stopped working and it ill only go up to the samsung logo and stay there. (this issue happened right after the battery was completley drained using the led...)
I've tried countless times to reinstall the rom i had, update it to a newer version of the same rom and even go back to an old version i still had on my SD card. I used the Archidroid 2.5.2 at the time and with the setting f2fs (and agni kernel if im not mistaken)
since then, i tried to change the file format back to ext4, ofcourse with full wipes, and change any other possible configuration on the setup of the rom. After all of these tries failed, i assumed i could just go and use Odin to install some stock firmware (following some advices i found here on the forums), and everything seemed to worked perfectly. Odin recognizes the phone, and it finishes the flashing with a big green happy PASS!. However, the phone still sits there at the samsung logo and just chills...
Tried to flash different stock ROMs and even tried to flash the rescue firmware from this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30087735&postcount=6) which again, seemed to work, but stayed in the samsung logo.
i kinda lost hope, although it seems the phone still can be saved (can access recovery and odin)...
i'd really appreciate the help!
also, i am kinda noobie in this and might need simpler words to understand.
Thanks alot!

Do you have an efs backup? (AGNi makes them when you flash it but since you formatted /data/media multiple times I assume they are gone).

i have no idea how to check whether or not i have...
Go read the efs sticky thread in general forum, your phone will not boot without it being restored.

yes, i suppose... i dont really remember what exactly happend with the phone, through all stages of its life, but the name sure rings a bell (from before this horrible incident).
do you think it is possible to do something with the SD card?
about the efs sticky, looking for it, but so far not finding it... (might be to dumb for this )

Do you have any way to mount the external SD? (E.g. an adapter, or by flashing a custom recovery and mounting it that way). It's possible that you have an efs backup on it.

Well, im not exactly 100% sure what do you mean by mounting... but if i go to the recovery i have, cwm if im not mistaken, i can go to mount and storage and then press mount external_sd and it seems to work (changes to unmount and doesnt say any error occured).
also, i can connect the card itself to my pc using a micro sd to mini sd adaptor...
is it of any help?

Yes, by mount I mean get it to display its contents on your computer. Is there anything with efs in its name on the card?

Not practically. The efs folder is kind of like the social security number of your phone so every folder is unique.

Hmm, so it didn't boot even when it was 100% stock? You said that you got those error messages in stock recovery but then a few minutes later you said that you had CWM. If so, then you might need to. I found some guides but I can't really vouch for them since I've never had to restore /efs like that, so following them would be at your own risk.
