I have searched for this all over and I know it's unlikely, but is there anyway to set up some form of remote desktop on the HD2 to control a Mac rather than a PC?
You could try RealVNC
Mobile client:
http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Communications/VNC-Viewer-8718.shtml
Mac Client/Server:
http://www.realvnc.com/cgi-bin/purchase.cgi (costs about $50 though as you need the enterprise edition for mac support!)

Hey there XDA.
i'm in the IT department for a big-time company, and we (obviously) have specific security parameters on our network.
Recently, with all of the talk about android tablets because of CES and other factors (i personally own a Viewsonic G-Tablet running VEGAn 5.1b) the team and i have come to wonder if we would be able to put an android tablet onto the domain the same way we would a regular old Windows PC/Laptop or a Blackberry phone onto the exchange server.
We use Citrix clients/servers as well as pc/laptops, and so far, as i've been scouring the market, i've been able to find a Citrix app, and a Wyse terminal app, which could be used to open VPN sessions on the server, as well as another app which allows an android device to be connected completely with Microsoft Exchange Server. ( touchdown http://www.nitrodesk.com/TouchDown.aspx )
So, i figured, where else would i go but here, to the most well versed android development website on the interwebs, to ask if you guys might know of anything at all, or if something could be done.
Any ideas?

Hi,
I'm kind of unclear about what you're looking for, from your post, I guess because there could be any number of interpretations, e.g.:
- Are you asking if an Android device could be joined to your Windows domain?
- Are you asking if you can "see" shares on your Windows machines from Android?
- Are you asking if you can RDP to a Windows machine from Android?
- Etc.?
Probably (I think) #1 above is "no", at least as far as I can see now (plus I don't know if it'd make sense).
The answer to the 2nd and 3rd are "yes".
For #2, either you can use something like ES File Explorer, or you can use CIFS Manager on an Android machine that has CIFS support.
For #3, Pocketcloud can do that (the one from Wyse), and there are a few more.

Thanks for the reply, and yes i was looking to concentrate more around number 1. If number 1 were to be solved, number 2 would end up working out perfectly, with no security risks (becuase the shared files are only available to domain devices or thin clients using the VPN/RDP services we have setup). I guess looking at it from another angle, we would probably be able to (theoretically) limit a user's access capabilities on the tablet so that a general user could still be able to access the file shares using VPN without creating a security risk...
as you can see i currently have a whole lot running around in my head, and i'm not even sure if i'm mkaing it sound like english... T_T
I use my Zpad for work, the business apps I use:
Touchdown (for exchange, would like spell checker though)
File Expert (access shares)
Xtralogic Remote Desktop (works VERY well, better than PocketCloud and worth the $25)

It sounds like you're looking for something like PAM authentication capability from the Gtab. I know that there are products that do that for *nix, but I'm not aware of anything specifically for Android. Then again I think that there are public domain implementations, so it might be possible. Sorry that I can't be more help ...

Did you ever figure out anything more on this? We are looking at the same thing right now, and it'd be great if you found any more info out
Hello all,
This was a full week of work to make functional ( this setup is considered for ADVANCED users only )
What this is about is to use a stock atrix that comes standard with a Citrix receiver, what does the receiver do is that it is an interface to the Xendesktop virtual desktop deployment and desktop delivery to any device or pc, mac, Linux smartphone except android for now (in this mode the atrix in webtop is considered linux).
Main ingredients for this cooking sesson :
==> One powerful PC with at least 6GB ram and dual core processor and really fast hard drives.
==> LOTS of patience and googling
Software needed :
-Windows 2008 server with service pack 2 at the least
-Xendesktop 5 express ISO from www.citrix.com
-Your flavor of a Hyper Visor : Vmware ESXi 4 / Xenserver / Microsoft Hyper-V
-Your flavor of OS you would like to use on your Atrix : Win XP / Vista / 7
Outline of install steps ( I am not going to go to detail here as Google is your friend )
1- Install a flavor of hyper-visor on your pc
2- Install the windows 2008 server VM on the hyper-visor
3- Install Xendesktop on the windows 2008 server ( do not use quick deploy )
4- Add active directory role to your windows 2008 server ( make sure you have Dydns domain that points to your router which is going to be your domain name for the AD )
5- Install a flavor of your favorite Desktop OS on the hyper-visor
6- Install adobe air, flash, acrobat reader and all your favorite apps you need on the run on your flavor of desktop OS.
7- Add the desktop OS to the domain you created in AD
8- Log in as administrator on the desktop OS and making sure you are logged in thru the domain THEN install Xendesktop desktop agent and configure it (do not use quick deploy).
9- Configure your router OR install a VPN server on the Hyper-visor OR install Citrix access gateway on the hyper-visor and configure it with Xendesktop (BIG monstrous headache)
By now you should be ready to jump of the roof, well you should be able to check that :
1- the desktop OS is ready under xendesktop console
2- you did make a catalog in xendesktop and added the machine and user to that catalog and all is good as you have followed the docs for xendesktop
3- you are seeing the web site of your xendesktop server locally
4- you are able to launch windows on your atrix 4G locally and remotely via which ever method you used to tunnel in to your local network.
I know there is alot of details are out, so fire up your questions and i will try my best to answer them
dude you dont know how long i've been trying to get this running.
This is by far the best quick guide out there.
If you could provide some further details as to how do we bypass certain limitations and possibly explain what drawbacks we face by having this run on our pc full time.
This is the BARE minimum as i tricked xendesktop to be running on a domain controller instead of having a DC by itself and another 08 server for the xendesktop which would mean you would need a bigger cpu or two computers like i did as i don't have much horse power.
There is no limitations the only limitation is that xendesktop express is free for 10 users licenses, you MUST keep the PC humming 24/7 for it to be available to you anywhere you go whether you are on your Atrix 4G or on another pc or mac or linux box, i can say this is the true mobile desktop, it looks very very nice on my laptop dock for the atrix, no need to hack into linux for now till sogarth gets it squared away, but in general i had fun doing this project, i will re do it with the quick deploy on my recently acquired dell poweredge server with hot scsi drives
tell me where did you fail or stop at and what did you try ???
OH by the way the pc you use for this you forget you had it cuz after you are done cooking you leave it aside and dont run anyrhing else on it !! LOL

Thanks for letting me know and updating your OP
I guess I need another PC as a server :X I need to figure that part out.
Hello
I have just bought a Samsung Ace connected to the British 'Virgin Media' network.
At home I have a small network of two computers (Windows 7 Home premium) and an Iomega NAS device. One computer and the NAS device are wired to the router while one computer is wireless (Laptop).
I can also connect to my NAS via friends computers over the internet. Nothing exciting there as both Windows and Iomega make it quite idiot proof for me to achieve this.
My question is, can I connect my Samsung Ace to my network and share files with my Window's 7 computers and my NAS device?
Cheers
You can try to use some app for samba sharing, like this one https://market.android.com/details?id=lysesoft.andsmb and connect to your local NAS.
I used to have a NAS server based on FreeNAS and this app worked for me.
Also, try an FTP client if you prefer. I'm hoping to get my QNAP turbo NAS soon!

Try totalcommander for android.
From http://ghisler.com its a free app but not on the market atm.

Sorry to be a nusence, but I'm a bit of a thickie. I've used Samba before when connecting a Linux operating system to my Windows computer with some success because everything was done for me.
I would like to mention that my version of Galaxy Ace comes with an app called AllShare which gives me limited access to shared folders on both my NAS box and my other two computers. I do not input any information yet I can gain limited access to my data.
At the moment when I install and run Ambsmb I am presented with a lot of questions and I do not know where to find the information. To an experienced network administrator these questions are a no brainer but to me, I'm confused.
What makes it all the more harder is that my NAS runs its own version of Linux, which I have never so far been able to connect with when using a Linux distro such as Mint or Ubuntu.
The questions that I am asked are:
Host name
user name
password
domain
Port
WINS srv
Bdcast address
LMHosts
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
Cheers

I'm using ubuntu, you need to know the NAS IP address (or router IP) then use it to connect to server (you must choose the windows shares option) ubuntu then asks for username and password automatically, and its about the same with AndSMB, fill in the IP address, username and password, that's all.
Dont forget smb kernel module on your ace. Afaik stock rom kernel doesnt contain smb module.

smb or windows shares are working fine here on my ACE with stock 2.3.6 rom.
My current laptop is going on 6 years old which should tell you that I don't push it very hard as far as computing power goes. Mostly what I'm doing with the laptop is email and web browsing - which is why I'm thinking the Tranformer prime + dock might be a good replacement for it.
I already know how to get my company email on it since I'm a long time Android phone user so that's not an issue.
If I were able to establish a VPN connection to the corporate network, that would clear up the few reservations I have in that if I could VPN in, then I could use remote desktop to connect to my desktop PC and do anything I needed to do that way. The issue is I'm not going to get any help our of our network administrator.
Personal devices are allowed as long as you agree to and sign the remote access and mobile devices policies. What I currently have is the installer for the Cisco VPN client (not AnyConnect) and a .pcf file. To get remote access from a Windows laptop I just have to install the client and import the .pcf file and I'm in business. For anything else I may need, its legal according to the policies but I'm just not going to get any help with it.
It looks like a lot of the connection information is in the .pcf file I use on Windows - but the password seems to be encrypted. Is there some client, either built in to the TP ICS build or that I can get from the market that would allow me to just import that .pcf file like I can in the regular VPN client? Or is there some other way to extract the information I need from the .pcf file. Like I said the network admin is extremely unhelpful and whatever I do will have to be using the resources available and on my own dime.
This is an important issue for me in that if I can't get some confidence before purchasing...I may have to stick with the Windows laptop. Anyone else familiar with this situation? I'm sure I can't be the only one.
I am looking forward to getting my hands on wp8 most likely a lumia 920. My question is does anyone know of remote desktop software? I was really dissapointed that wp7 did not have one that was as easy as teamviewer. I have emailed teamviewer with the usual reply " if something is developed we will let you know." I have tried all the remote apps onn my wp7 to log into my work pc and no success. I have to resort to teamviewer on my laptop or my tablet. Does anyone know any inside knowledge or is it due to fact that I had a wp7 rom on my hd2 that prevented the remote control apps to work?

I have tried pc remote but my works ip address is hidden. I need something that works like teamview where you just log in and connect. I may try pc remote again and see what i can tinker with
I'm looking for something as well. The RDP metro app on Windows RT is really neat, I don't know why they just don't have it on windows phone 8. The thing that is killing me is the lack of VPN. Even Windows RT has built-in VPN and it works great.
