I am not in contract, and certainly without 30/mon android unlimited data plan.
Can I use 10/mon web2go data plan? Someone said Tmo will notice the user to upgrade to 30/mon data plan and stop the 10/mon one.
Can unlock and flash custom rom to avoid Tmo's checking and use 10/mon web2go service?
Thanks!!

Regardless or not if it's in the wrong section you can try to be helpful.
To answer your question, I had a friend that tried the same thing (not with a Vibrant, but with a different android smartphone) and they never changed anything on his plan. I do know that they have different setups that apply's to the way you connect to their towers and how bandwidth is passed out though, so you may not get the best speeds. My mom had a blackberry and switched to the vibrant, they forgot to change something in their systems which forced her to have slower then normal connectivity for the Vibrant.
Hope this helps.
Just ran into this and I know this is in the wrong section. You are only obligated to pay the data if you signed the 2 year contract with data for 2 years(phone discount). I have my 2 other lines and they are on a g1 and a cliq(both on stock roms and purchased used) and when I called customer service they saw both the g1 and cliq as the phones registered to the sim and asked if I wanted to add data. I asked if I had to and they said no since I did not sign a two year data contract for each line(like when I got my Vibrant discounted) they can use the phone with no data.
Bottom line if you got a smartphone discounted and signed 2 year agreement for data(i think they made it mandatory when G1's were released) then you need data. They cannot force you to add data if you do not want it unless you want your phone discounted, then you have to sign the agreement. If you do not get the phone discounted, then you do not have to sign the 2 year agreement for data.

This is where i disagree, there are rules, and one of the top threads even says to read before posting a thread. Now I do agree that I should not be rude or anything, but helping people who do not follow the rules makes the threads a mess. So helping those people not to read where it says read before you post, and rules to the forum is not the way to keep this informative and helpful to everyone. It makes a mess in the forum and un-nessary work for the MODs to have to delete/move.

Your right, but you can assist in the process of informing the user that they posted in the incorrect section.
oh, sorry. That's my first time here and opened too many windows of different sections so made the fault.
no u can not.
The correct answer is, you can use the $10 web, but the phone will prompt you to upgrade your data subscription every time you try to use the web. Most likely the rep will explain that it won't work and that there is no point anyway since it will only work for a couple hours after downgrade. You can either remove it or pay the $30 a month.
I work for T-Mobile, and I can tell you that they run system checks based on the imei of the phone and if the appropriate package isn't on it won't work

I'm on a flex pay account thing and I.don't pay 30 for data... I pay 70 something dollars for 1000 minutes plus unlimited everything
On another note. I had a hd2(windows) with this flex pay account and I did the froyo on the hd2 and data and everything was working great when I switch the simcard to vibrant I didn't have data internet so I called and they changed to android package. But it worked on the hd2 running android? Weird

Ok here's my scenario...I have the grandfathered unlimited data plan from At&t and I made a point of them making a note in my account before I purchased the SGS2. I rooted my phone and installed Cognition soon after. I attempted to tether before I rooted etc because the option was present while on stock, but of course a pop up appeared saying that I need to change my plan blah blah blah. Once rooted, I didn't tether because I really haven't had the need to yet...because I have wifi in my home. I will admit that I do consume a lot of data...particularly streaming and downloading content (such as roms etc directly to my device)...but that's the point of 4G unlimited data, correct? And even then a lot of the time I'm connected to wifi at home. The only thing I did differently was tried some APN settings that I seen on Android Central which were supposedly giving other SGSII users better download and upload speeds by connecting to the "backhaul". It was actually worse. So I receive an email saying that if they catch me tethering again, they will change my data plan on their own. So my question is, since I haven't actually tethered, could my actual data usage triggered the message...or since I attempted to tether...or or the APN changing...and how could I prevent them from changing it?

I think a phone call to att should solve your issue. If they did put you on a tethering plan, they can undo it. But, you may need to get a supervisor if the unlimited plan has been removed.
From what I understand you get warned at least once before they make any changes.
Also, story perfectly understandable to me as is.

But then again I wouldn't expect you to understand much of anything judging by the majority of your posts on this site.

I'm not hijacking this guys thread anymore than we already have. If you want to argue with me (and be destroyed in every imaginable way) then go ahead and shoot me a pm.
To answer the original posters questions. Att can only send you warnings about tethering if they catch on. You can do things that wont raise any flags on their end such as using less data for less lengths of time.
A better alternanative would be to mask your device id. I'm not aware of any apps that can do it on Android but PDA net can do it for Apple. Maybe someone else can Chime in on an app.

If you do tether, it was claimed in the Captivate forum that att sniff out the browser agent for Internet Explorer, so to avoid detection to use Google Chrome, or another browser.
But, if you haven't actually tethered I would start with a call to att customer service. If they flagged your account, you should be able to sort it out over the phone.

If tethering, either by device or plan feature, was specifically included in the plan you were grandfathered from you should be fine. If it wasn't specifically called out as included they'll charge you for the add-on. You can't grandfather something that didn't exist. In other words, if "unlimited data" didn't specifically apply to tethering and tethering as a feature was introduced afterward you'll have to pay for it.
OP, are you using the stock GSII browser? If not, that could be the culprit. As stated above, they're basing it off the browser agent. Call and say you're using a market browser with Mozilla as browser agent. That should help your case later if they end up jerking you around.

They use heuristics to sniff packet data for suspect traffic. While it's not 100%accurate, they hold the cards and it's up to you to prove your innocence.
No one knows what the new heuristics are - but something in your post-root non-tethering data usage probably set off a false positive.
Apparently a few others have had false positives and no one knows the true triggers. Good chance that mangling your browser useragent is one of them.
Call them and complain that you received a nastygram despite not attempting to tether after the app blocked it.
I have been using unlimited data for a few years. I tethered with my iphone. Used MyWi, and then PDAnet. I was contacted by them concerning my 'illegal' use of tethering.
A few weeks ago, I switched from the Iphone to the GSII. Rooted it, and almost IMMEDIATELY got a text message saying that tethering has been added to my contract and that I lost my unlimited data.
Am I screwed here? I don't think tethering existed when I signed my original contract with unlimited data.... Can I get this back?
I do apologize if anyone felt my OP was lengthy, but I was at work and I just wanted to cover all sides of the situation just in case I couldn't respond at the time.
I use the stock browser on Cognition to surf and stream to my video player, and Opera Mobile when downloading from Filesonic, etc.
I was mainly trying to get and idea of what might becausing the flag so I would know which route to go when I do call into ATT. I don't want to receive a bill in a month or so and have to battle them then. The tethering plan wasn't included in the grandfathered Unlimited data plan, but I actually did "abuse" it for a while with my Captivate before I got my DSL installed in my new apartment.
I was just thinking that this could have possibly been some sort of scare tactic on behalf of AT&T because of my current data usage, and it was a preemptive action to contain the abuse of their already spotty 4G network.
Also, I wanted myself and any others who have had this experience to control and prevent future occurrences.
I have a friend that works for Verizon wireless and he told me that he received information from a tech that when you call into the tech support, they can get some of the details of your current rom...and conclude whether or not you are rooted, etc...how true this is idk...

Original email (just in case)
Dear xxx xxx,
We've noticed your service plan may need updating.
Many AT&T customers use their smartphones as a broadband connection for other devices, like laptops, netbooks or other smartphones– a practice commonly known as tethering. Tethering can be an efficient way for our customers to enjoy the benefits of AT&T's mobile broadband network and use more than one device to stay in touch with important people and information. To take advantage of this feature, we require that in addition to a data plan, you also have a tethering plan.
Our records show that you use this capability, but are not subscribed to our tethering plan. If you would like to continue tethering, please log into your account online at www.wireless.att.com , or call us at 866-975-0005, Monday -Friday, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. CT, or Saturday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. CT, to sign up for the DataPro 4GB for Smartphone Tethering plan or the DataPro Enterprise 4GB for Smartphone Tethering plan.
If we don't hear from you, we'll plan to automatically enroll you into one of the above DataPro 4GB plans in an upcoming bill cycle. The specific plan selected for you will depend on your current smartphone data plan; if you are currently subscribed to another Enterprise data plan, you will automatically be enrolled in the DataPro Enterprise 4GB for Smartphone Tethering Plan so that you can continue to access corporate email and applications. Your new DataPro 4GB plan – whether you sign up on your own or we automatically enroll you – will replace your current smartphone data plan, including if you are on an unlimited data plan.
If you discontinue tethering by the end of this month, no changes to your current plan will be required.

Wow. Is tethering only available as part of a specific DataPro package? If it's not available as a stand-alone option this is a really nasty and back-handed way to get people off grandfathered unlimited packages. That or to greatly reduce the network burden of tethering.

Exactly my point...the phone only came on the 2nd...there's no way I could've hit a data cap like that on my own to raise a flag in a mere 2 weeks...I don't have that kind of porn habit lol...not sure if it was something in the software...quite possible that it is something in the useragent of the browser...
But it feels like I'm getting bullied here...just want something concrete to fire back with.
EDIT: Came home from work and loaded up my laptop...remembered that in a drunken stupor I was up debating between a Slingbox adapter or a Logictech Revue...and I remember that I said eff it so I downloaded the Gmote and Unified Remote apps to connect to the server in my house via wifi and use my phone to control my media and browser through my TV. Could that have triggered the email? That was at approx 12-1am last night and I recieved the email on my way to work at 9:20 this morn
I just got that same email from them this morning.
I'm a little confused as to what their plan of action is. Do they plan to add a tethering plan at the end of the month w/out our consent if we don't contact them, or will everything stay the same if we stop tethering?
"If we don't hear from you, we'll plan to automatically enroll you into one of the above DataPro 4GB plans in an upcoming bill cycle."
but then towards the end of the email, they state:
"If you discontinue tethering by the end of this month, no changes to your current plan will be required."
Should i contact them or will i be fine if i stop tethering?
Sounds to me if you don't contact them you going to get enrolled

I've seen a lot of these threads around different forums with plenty of people stating that they got the email, but not many of them following up whether or not their plans actually got changed or not.
Wondering how many people actually got their data plans changed or if the email is more of a warning/scare tactic.
hey guys im new to the forums as i just bought a rezound on amazon wireless over the penny sale.anyways onto the question at hand.so ive heard alot of people try to get unlimited data through the wireless hotspot then cancel it right after.my question is "is there any kind of penalty fee from amazon if i decide to add hotspot to get unlimited data then cancel the feature a day later?"
thank you to anyone who even attempts to answer this question and im excited to join the forums
Shouldn't be as long as you still have your line active. There has been debate on whether or not you need to keep data active but it sounds like you are planning on keeping data and just losing hotspot so you should be fine.
Was the $100 Amazon gift card offer still on if you activated your line with hotspot? I got that and so I'm keeping my hotspot through one billing cycle to make sure I get the gift card.
You should really read this thread, I'm pretty sure this was discussed there.

that's what got me wondering when people said they were doing this. i figure, if something does happen.. it won't be untill the next billing cycle kicks in. hopefully these lads do get to keep the unlimited... i'd just worry about making 'technical support' calls to verizon in the future & having them look up your account and go "wait a minute..."
Okay I have a few ideas about getting a discounted phone and keeping unlimited data. First off my line is available for an upgrade this November, and another member of my family has an upgrade now, they do not have a smartphone now but will be getting a smartphone with 2gb data. So my first idea is once they get there upgrade, wait until mine is available and then transfer it to their line and have them upgrade again, and then I take that phone and put my sim card into it. Now I'm not sure, but I think the problem with that is when transferring my upgrade and having someone use it, will extend my contract and bump me to tired data, which I can't have happen. So if any of you have tried this method and had success I would really appreciate if you could tell me exactly how you did it.
The other method I read about was having a rep transfer the unlimited data plan to a tired data plan within the family and transferring the tired to the used to be unlimited, and then upgrading with tired data, and then switching the respective data plans back and maintaining unlimited data.
Again if anyone has had any luck with any of these ideas, or were able to keep your unlimited and get a subsidized phone another way, I would really appreciate it if you could leave a detailed response.
Thanks!!
You can use the other person's upgrade no problem, but if anyone uses yours, you will need a new contract and lose unlimited. I don't know about the more complex tiered data switching scheme... sounds like something that might work if the reps were feeling very charitable.

Friend, just go to Gazelle and get a nice used phone for a couple hundred bucks and call it a day.
nevermind
You can use another family members upgrade by swapping phones after they upgrade, but you can't give your upgrade to someone else without losing unlimited. So either you convince your family member to give them your upgrade and you give them your old phone, you don't have many other options.
Thanks everyone. It sucks Verizon is doing this to its grandfathered users, but I guess I will just have to keep using the Thunderbolt until I have enough to buy a phone of contract.

The funny thing is, I typically use around 3GB per month, even when I tether. I just hate the idea of always checking how much data I used to ensure that I don't go over!

I would love to switch to T-Mobile, but I'm about 15 minutes from the city so I only get 2G here, and I could never live with that. If you do go T-Mobile, I'd check out either the $30/mo. for 100 minutes with unlimited text and data, or the $50 unlimited everything.

I'm contemplating checking their service out. $50 unlimited everything works well for me since I do make fair use of minutes at times (mostly work-related). If their service in my area is good, I could see getting the Note 2 from them rather than buy it unsubsidized from Verizon.
Regarding the earlier comment about giving your upgrade to someone else, have you verified this? I had read through the grapevine an ok workaround was to transfer your upgrade to another line, use it, then activate it on your line again to bypass all the stuff. Just don't want to try the wrong thing when the time comes and get spanked for it hah.

If memory serves me correct it will lock you in for a 2 year contract so you would end up paying for 2 separate lines that way but I am not totally sure there.
Oh, we have the lines. And dumbphones on them that are used (grandparents on jitterbug like phones...heh) I know I can get away with upgrading one of those lines, then activating it on mine. I was just hoping someone had tried transferring the upgrade from smartphone to another line, upgrading, then activating back on real line. In essence, still using your own upgrading and just subverting contractual stuff by doing all the action on another line.

I'll need to take a look at that and Note 2 discussion on T-Mobile. My area is possibly iffy for T-Mobile, which is why I'm concerned. AT&T was historically a problem. Verizon has had the best coverage at home so I'm reluctant to move away from them.
Hello everyone,
Just figured I'd introduce myself. My names Christian, and I work for Verizon. I've been reading on the forums for a while now but just recently registered. I currently use the DROID DNA rooted on the ViperDNA rom, with an unlimited data plan. I just picked up a seidio active case for it today, and can say it's the best I've seen so far. Other than that, I'm still relatively new to the rooting and rom scene, so it's been a learning experience. By the way, I'm sure I'm not the only vzw employee on here, but I'd be more than happy to help with any questions anyone has related to my job.

Can i have unlimited data xD this 2GB plan is small lol Welcome to the forums
Thanks for the welcomes so far. And as for unlimited, I wish it was still that simple. It would be a lot less work on my part finding loopholes to get an upgrade every now and then.
100+ views and only two people actually replied =/ I was joking man, I know its not that simple. But nonetheless, welcome. The forums seem to be really quiet though..
I noticed the same thing. Plenty of views, but everyone is quiet. Regardless, if anyone could use the into, I can't get new people unlimited but I can always assist in helping you keep your unlimited. Feel free to pm me about it.

Yeah, that was my main reason for making a new to the forums thread. Needed my 10 posts haha. But the easiest way to keep unlimited without a risk of getting your rep fired goes as follows: Have an old basic phone on hand, and add a 10$ line for it to your account. Use the upgrade from the basic phone to get whichever phone you want and have it activated on the basic phones line. Switch the service back to the basic phone. Now you technically own the new device. From there, just have the new device put on your number with unlimited data.
Sure, it adds 10$ to your bill, but my unlimited is definitely worth 10$ more than a basic 30$ two gig plan. Just make sure all actions are done on the basic line. Any changes like that accidentally made to your unlimited line will result in being dropped to two gigs.
Ahh yea I've been using my other lines to get new phones n letting them get my old ones lol I'm not losing unlimited

yeah, we have 3 lines : my unlimited, wifes w/ 2gb tiered, and dummy flip phone acct
i just use the other 2 phones upgrades for phones for me, and when mine comes up i pass the upgrade to the other line to use it
i just swap my sim card in when the phone comes in the mail
They're starting to get stricter with the unlimited policies, so I'd start watching more carefully as a heads up. My line's upgrade is coming up soon so I can let you guys know more details, but I almost believe at this point if the upgrade is used on another line, I will still lose unlimited on mine.
On a side note, I'm a huge fan of the rom nit. Viper on my dna is amazing. I'll be posting in the rom thread when I finally have privileges haha.

Yeah, that's what the warning was about. I've did the alternate upgrade method a few times, but the stricter rules may deem it pointless. That's why I was suggesting the extra basic line to have an upgrade without losing unlimited.
Previously, we could put a fake phone on it called a test device, but now they are banning the use of test devices so there needs to be an actual basic phone involved.
Welcome! I have a question if I may. My upgrade isn't until September. Once this upgrade is available, can I still steal upgrades from other lines on my plan and keep my unlimited? And vice versa I suppose. Can someone else steal my upgrade without risking my unlimited data? Any help is appreciated.

Stealing the other upgrades on your plan is how you can keep your unlimited. But you have to have the phone activated on the other line when you first buy it. Only then can you pull it off, and use it on your line. As for them stealing your upgrade, it normally works but here lately they're getting stricter so I suggest waiting until I can get you a solid answer. I believe it may elimate your unlimited at this point if the upgrade on your phone number is used. As soon as I figure it out, I'll make sure to let you know.
I've just switched to Verizon from att and the LTE on Verizon is slower for some reason. I had the One X at AT&T with dual core! I also wish I had unlimited. I don't get what you're saying about how to get it!

Sounds good! Both my parents have upgrades soon on their dumb phones so I hope to be getting one of those

1) lte speeds are going to be greatly influenced by where you live, and the amount of lte devices that are present in your area
remember, LTE is newer on ATT, and there are far less LTE devices being used on their network....many people still buy unlocked international phones w/ just hdspa+ and use them on att's network....whereas virtually all verizon phones now are sold with lte
for the most part verizon's lte coverage is much more expanded though (by me there is only lte for vzw, not the other carriers yet)
2) the unlimited data tricks we were discussing all pertain to pre existing verizon customers who have/had unlimited plans grandfathered in....theres no real way to get an unlimited plan now on verizon....though occasionally on ebay you ll see people selling a "transfer" of their unlimited line....but proceed w/ caution on that
I'm an indirect agent, not a corporate employee but, I can say right now alt upgrades are not causing people to loose unlimited... I just did one yesterday to help keep someone's unlimited data and I can confirm that it stayed.

When I try to turn the hotspot function on through settings, it says "use of this service requires a subscription to Mobile Hotspot or Mobile Broadband Connect..." which I don't have. But when I use Power Toggles to turn on the hotspot function, I am able to connect my computer to my device.
Is there a way that Verizon would figure out that I can use their hotspot function without paying for the monthly subscription?
I've been using it for over two years with out them knowing.

The simple answer is Yes. No matter what method you use for enabling tethering on your phone, if Verizon cares to examine the data going in and out of your phone, they can tell if you're tethering.
Will they bother to look? Will they do anything about it? Those are the more relevant questions.
My philosophy is, don't abuse it and they'll probably never look at you. I suspect that somebody, somewhere at Verizon is responsible for running a report every month of their top data users who don't pay for tethering. Then, they go look at those users and bust the ones that they find are tethering without paying for it. My personal goal is just to make sure I'm fare enough down that list that they never get to looking at me.
I can tell you that according to the C block spectrum that Verizon leases for their LTE network, they can not stop, inhibit, or penalize you for tethering your phone while on LTE. It is in the licensing rights of their spectrum. Hence, all the new plans include free wifi tethering. Now, this was not an oversight, because Verizon used to attempt to block tethering apps from the play store to their customers. The FCC just so happened to put a stop to that 2 months prior to Verizon announcing new Share Everthing plans that include tethering. Verizon knows that the people who tether tend to use a lot more data. With more data being used across the whole account, the customer pays more. Verizon only wanted to prevent People from tethering long enough to release the new plans, because they are doing exactly what they intended them to do... Convince people who don't use a lot of data to move to a tiered plan and give them hotspot for free. Saying "Try it. If you find it convenient, you can add a mobile hotspot device to your plan for only $20 more a month and you can connect up to 10 things to it. All while conserving your phones battery life".
Man that is a big assumption .

Yes and no. The FCC left the door wide open to Verizon managing tethering by unlimited users. The FCC specifically only took issue with usage based customers being charged. Additionally, the Share Everything plans preceded the Verizon/FCC consent decree by one month.

Actually, it's exactly what I said it was. A suspicion. Nothing more.
That is a very descriptive "suspicion".

You are wrong my friend, there is no difference from a tiered data user and an unlimited one on C block. And the FCC stepped in 2 months prior to the share everything plans, Verizon finally took action one month prior. They were allowed time to coordinate the stop of blocking those apps.

The FCC actually began their investigation in Oct 2011 and first contacted Verizon in November 2011. The discussion of timing is fairly inconsequential, so let's move on to the meat & potatoes...
The assertion that this also applicable to unlimited plan users is directly contradicted by the plain language of the consent decree published by the FCC, which explicitly states, ”... customers on unlimited usage plans must continue to pay an additional fee to tether their devices.” Additionally, “ nothing herein prejudices Verizon Wireless's right to [...] take remedial actions, including termination of service, against customers who violate the terms and conditions of their service plans or Verizon Wireless's policies applicable to the service provided to such customers.”
