Okay I have a few ideas about getting a discounted phone and keeping unlimited data. First off my line is available for an upgrade this November, and another member of my family has an upgrade now, they do not have a smartphone now but will be getting a smartphone with 2gb data. So my first idea is once they get there upgrade, wait until mine is available and then transfer it to their line and have them upgrade again, and then I take that phone and put my sim card into it. Now I'm not sure, but I think the problem with that is when transferring my upgrade and having someone use it, will extend my contract and bump me to tired data, which I can't have happen. So if any of you have tried this method and had success I would really appreciate if you could tell me exactly how you did it.
The other method I read about was having a rep transfer the unlimited data plan to a tired data plan within the family and transferring the tired to the used to be unlimited, and then upgrading with tired data, and then switching the respective data plans back and maintaining unlimited data.
Again if anyone has had any luck with any of these ideas, or were able to keep your unlimited and get a subsidized phone another way, I would really appreciate it if you could leave a detailed response.
Thanks!!
You can use the other person's upgrade no problem, but if anyone uses yours, you will need a new contract and lose unlimited. I don't know about the more complex tiered data switching scheme... sounds like something that might work if the reps were feeling very charitable.

Friend, just go to Gazelle and get a nice used phone for a couple hundred bucks and call it a day.
nevermind
You can use another family members upgrade by swapping phones after they upgrade, but you can't give your upgrade to someone else without losing unlimited. So either you convince your family member to give them your upgrade and you give them your old phone, you don't have many other options.
Thanks everyone. It sucks Verizon is doing this to its grandfathered users, but I guess I will just have to keep using the Thunderbolt until I have enough to buy a phone of contract.

The funny thing is, I typically use around 3GB per month, even when I tether. I just hate the idea of always checking how much data I used to ensure that I don't go over!

I'm kind of in the same boat. I am pretty much always on wifi now because I work from home, but I don't want to lose unlimited data in case I ever feel like using more data again. Been considering making a switch over to T-Mobile next time I feel like upgrading.

I would love to switch to T-Mobile, but I'm about 15 minutes from the city so I only get 2G here, and I could never live with that. If you do go T-Mobile, I'd check out either the $30/mo. for 100 minutes with unlimited text and data, or the $50 unlimited everything.

I'm contemplating checking their service out. $50 unlimited everything works well for me since I do make fair use of minutes at times (mostly work-related). If their service in my area is good, I could see getting the Note 2 from them rather than buy it unsubsidized from Verizon.
Regarding the earlier comment about giving your upgrade to someone else, have you verified this? I had read through the grapevine an ok workaround was to transfer your upgrade to another line, use it, then activate it on your line again to bypass all the stuff. Just don't want to try the wrong thing when the time comes and get spanked for it hah.

If memory serves me correct it will lock you in for a 2 year contract so you would end up paying for 2 separate lines that way but I am not totally sure there.
Oh, we have the lines. And dumbphones on them that are used (grandparents on jitterbug like phones...heh) I know I can get away with upgrading one of those lines, then activating it on mine. I was just hoping someone had tried transferring the upgrade from smartphone to another line, upgrading, then activating back on real line. In essence, still using your own upgrading and just subverting contractual stuff by doing all the action on another line.

Think that has to do with the Samsung radio gripe which is really hit and miss but can be a problem. My mom has a g nex that gets a little flaky at times at home because of it. Before I put the update on it basically it was a coaster in my hosue

I'll need to take a look at that and Note 2 discussion on T-Mobile. My area is possibly iffy for T-Mobile, which is why I'm concerned. AT&T was historically a problem. Verizon has had the best coverage at home so I'm reluctant to move away from them.

Seeing stuff about the new Droid DNA that was announced today, just kinda curious of who all will be getting it? I won't be able to get it real soon after release unless money and/or the DNA falls out of the sky into my hands, but just curious of who all would jump on that? It looks sick, and I think ViperDNA would be insane.

I think it looks amazing, and it is probably my next. But I'm not eligible to upgrade until February, and even then...I have to convince the missus. Cnet's live blog didn't mention a microSD expansion, which is disappointing, but the camera looked amazing. It's always ready to take a picture by pressing the hardware button. Nice!

Currently on the Dinc4G... I can wait till my official upgrade date in April and I'll buy the best phone available then... Not this though, I think it is way too big for me.

Well, that was a quick move to a new forum...Anyway I just want to say that I called that Verizon's app store is being replaced by Amazon's "services." The product page says you can use a single sign-on to all of the Amazon apps. I like most of them, but I'd rather be able to install/uninstall on my own.
This would be my next phone if it wasn't on Verizon.
I'm planning on buying it, I just have to figure out what I am going to have to do to keep my unlimited data. If you upgrade a limited data line now and use this phone on an unlimited data line they cut the unlimited data plan off. I am thinking of upgrading the limited data line and selling it on EBay then buying another DNA since they can only take it if the device has the same serial number. I haven't been able to find a friend to swap phones with to keep our data packs yet, they dont have upgrades >.<

No they wont.
In fact... verizon reps will tell you to do this method if you want to keep your unlimited data plan.
No chance. Fixed storage, questionable battery life.
Jumped ship from my Galaxy Note 2 pre-order to nab this one instead. Higher resolution, lots of equal or better specs, and $100 less? Yep. Battery might be an issue but not worried about it as I tend to keep my phone plugged in at my desk at work all day anyways. Bring it on!

Verizon didn't tell me to do that method. I called them asking about billing the phone to my account and they told me you can't bill preorders to your account. They also told me that any line that I switch this phone to since it carries a new two year contract is subject to be audited and if they find in their audit that it has the same IMEI number as the one I purchased on my limited data line, they will change my plan for the unlimited data phone to a limited data plan. Verizon is trying to destroy us unlimited data users any way they possibly can.

Solution = Upgrade your current phone unsubsidized at full retail, sell your old phone on ebay to offset some of the cost, and retain your unlimited data until it's new contract time down the road.

not ready to decide between this and the note 2. Note 2 has sd card slot and bigger battery, but samsung plastic sucks and their radios don't seem to get along with cdma. Been a htc fan for a long time, so I want to play with both first.

I'm trying to help my brother upgrade from a very old windows phone to a rezound and trying to get him to keep his unlimited data plan. Our parents live in an extremely rural area that doesnt have 4g. I saw posts in the past about people being able to keep their unlimited plans if they were in 3g areas.
Can anyone help or give advice as far doing an upgrade and keeping the older unlimited plan?
Much appreciated.
I don't know anything about getting it with 3G but I do know that if you get a home phone with Verizon they will let you have unlimited on your cell phone. It's $19/mo for nationwide calling. So if you have a home phone you can port that number over and it's no more expensive. If you don't have one and have to add it well, then it's going to cost that much more for unlimited.
You can't activate a 4G phone without a data plan and they are not allowing anyone to upgrade from 3G to 4G phones and keep their unlimited data. If there was a loop hole, I'm sure it would be posted online somewhere.
yeah, there's physically no way in our system to do it..maybe if you get like 5 levels up on customer service you could try though lol

It's not semantics, it's Verizon policy. If you have an upgrade on any line on your account and you use it, you are then signing a new two year contract. A new contract with no unlimited where you are forced into a share plan.
That isn't a guess or semantics. That's exactly how it is.
If it wasn't, then you'd never lose unlimited ever because you can just upgrade on other lines until the end of time. You do realize how stupid that sounds right?

You can do that, upgrade on a secondary line, transfer the phone to your line, new phone, unlimited data. You are not forced into a shared plan, you can choose an individual tiered plan. If you have another line already on tiered data or willing to give up unlimited and their upgrade, you can use it and keep your unlimited. Please stop being wrong.
Sometimes you have to be smarter than your smartphone.
Holy hell, NO YOU CAN'T. You cannot upgrade a secondary line and still maintain your current contract. If you add a line, it's a new two year agreement. When you upgrade a line with a subsidized price phone, it is a new two year agreement. THAT'S WHY THE PHONE IS SUBSIDIZED. That is how it works.
You really have no clue what you are saying. So stop.
Edit: Also, you can't be on individual tiered data when you have multiple lines anymore. You were able to add new lines at tiered data at one point but can't do that anymore. So any new line additions or upgrades force your entire family plan into a shared data plan. See how that works?
Again, stop speaking.
Hello everyone,
Just figured I'd introduce myself. My names Christian, and I work for Verizon. I've been reading on the forums for a while now but just recently registered. I currently use the DROID DNA rooted on the ViperDNA rom, with an unlimited data plan. I just picked up a seidio active case for it today, and can say it's the best I've seen so far. Other than that, I'm still relatively new to the rooting and rom scene, so it's been a learning experience. By the way, I'm sure I'm not the only vzw employee on here, but I'd be more than happy to help with any questions anyone has related to my job.

Yeah, that was my main reason for making a new to the forums thread. Needed my 10 posts haha. But the easiest way to keep unlimited without a risk of getting your rep fired goes as follows: Have an old basic phone on hand, and add a 10$ line for it to your account. Use the upgrade from the basic phone to get whichever phone you want and have it activated on the basic phones line. Switch the service back to the basic phone. Now you technically own the new device. From there, just have the new device put on your number with unlimited data.
Sure, it adds 10$ to your bill, but my unlimited is definitely worth 10$ more than a basic 30$ two gig plan. Just make sure all actions are done on the basic line. Any changes like that accidentally made to your unlimited line will result in being dropped to two gigs.
Ahh yea I've been using my other lines to get new phones n letting them get my old ones lol I'm not losing unlimited

They're starting to get stricter with the unlimited policies, so I'd start watching more carefully as a heads up. My line's upgrade is coming up soon so I can let you guys know more details, but I almost believe at this point if the upgrade is used on another line, I will still lose unlimited on mine.

Yeah, that's what the warning was about. I've did the alternate upgrade method a few times, but the stricter rules may deem it pointless. That's why I was suggesting the extra basic line to have an upgrade without losing unlimited.
Previously, we could put a fake phone on it called a test device, but now they are banning the use of test devices so there needs to be an actual basic phone involved.
Welcome! I have a question if I may. My upgrade isn't until September. Once this upgrade is available, can I still steal upgrades from other lines on my plan and keep my unlimited? And vice versa I suppose. Can someone else steal my upgrade without risking my unlimited data? Any help is appreciated.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
Stealing the other upgrades on your plan is how you can keep your unlimited. But you have to have the phone activated on the other line when you first buy it. Only then can you pull it off, and use it on your line. As for them stealing your upgrade, it normally works but here lately they're getting stricter so I suggest waiting until I can get you a solid answer. I believe it may elimate your unlimited at this point if the upgrade on your phone number is used. As soon as I figure it out, I'll make sure to let you know.

1) lte speeds are going to be greatly influenced by where you live, and the amount of lte devices that are present in your area
remember, LTE is newer on ATT, and there are far less LTE devices being used on their network....many people still buy unlocked international phones w/ just hdspa+ and use them on att's network....whereas virtually all verizon phones now are sold with lte
for the most part verizon's lte coverage is much more expanded though (by me there is only lte for vzw, not the other carriers yet)
2) the unlimited data tricks we were discussing all pertain to pre existing verizon customers who have/had unlimited plans grandfathered in....theres no real way to get an unlimited plan now on verizon....though occasionally on ebay you ll see people selling a "transfer" of their unlimited line....but proceed w/ caution on that
I'm an indirect agent, not a corporate employee but, I can say right now alt upgrades are not causing people to loose unlimited... I just did one yesterday to help keep someone's unlimited data and I can confirm that it stayed.

Just thought I should share my thoughts regarding my latest warranty exchange....my WiFi was having issues on stock Rom unrooted so I called Verizon and see what they could offer.
Battery pull and network refresh(really? I didn't know WiFi was part of the Verizon network but OK)
Factory reset(I though alright atleast were in the right area....)
Finally she proceeded to order me a replacement while telling me that Verizon doesn't tolerate abuse of the network or altering of devices, I asked why do you believe its altered and where is this abuse of your network? she replies, you use an extreme amount of data that is not likely to be consumed soley on the phone.
I couldn't stop laughing, I HONESTLY asked her if she got that from an episode of CSI? I then told her my unlimited plan doesn't include a clause for intruding questions about assumptions on how I use my phone. She quickly backed off and gave me a tracking number for the shipping.
I just was truly caught off guard after the years of having my plan and NEVER being questioned like this LOL....just my interaction and wanted to pass it along
Out of curiosity how much data was it? If you'd happen to know ?

That's what I'm saying.
When I called Verizon the week of the DNA launch, I asked the local store if they would have any devices in on that day. The rep asked me if I was upgrading my line and if I was he tried to sell me the SG3. I told him I was not upgrading, I didn't want that pos, and am planning to buy the DNA at retail price. His statement I clearly remember "Why on earth would you pay $600 for THAT phone when clearly you are eligible and able to get a better phone for $99" ... I said nicely that I would like to keep my unlimited data plan. Then he asked me, how much data do I use on a monthly basis ... I replied, usually 30-40GB+ depending. He said "depending?!! that much data should not be allowed, how can one person abuse Verizon..." I just interrupted him loudly saying ...I have UNLIMITED, UNLIMITED means there is no LIMIT! and hung up.
Since then, I blow my data out the water. Hit over 100GB last month myself and plan to do it continually

I just think it's funny that people try to say the unlimited plans were taken away "because of people like you". The reality is that Verizon got rid of unlimited plans because they want to make more money. It has very little to do with the few people here and there who "abuse" their unlimited data.
I personally have unlimited and use as little as 2GB or as much as 10GB on any given month...

Netflix, Downloading ROMs, DropBox (Auto-Upload:I take a lot of pictures and videos) YouTube, Google Music (have no problem streaming 2GB a day worth of music)
So I'm not really "abusing" I'm just taking advantage of my unlimited data, especially since the DNA only has a set amount of storage.
Now me downloading the Windows 7/SP1 ISO files from Microsoft every day would be "abusing" yet still legit
and it is all about Verizon wanting more money... They charging you for data usage and selling you phones without sdcards, forcing you to use their data to use your cloud storage
I think Verizon is "abusing" us!

I agree, Work got me on trips all the time. When at hotels, WiFi costs extra. My phone is the alternative... That uses majority me data there.
I went the route of adding an extra line to get my DNA, came out cheaper that retail!
$199 - for phone with contract
$240 - $10/month for the extra line (2yrs)
$30 - they activate data on the line, switch your two phones then cut the data off the secondary line
I got my DNA for a little over $480 with a pack of 5 free screen protectors lol
My experience with Verizon's customer service has been horrible. If Sprint had the coverage of Verizon, I would still be with them. They finally made things right with me when I was able to do an early upgrade to get my Droid DNA. I was ready to jump back to Sprint lol

Well this month it was roughly 132gb as I recall, I've gotten as high as 200gb before. Bottom line is I pay for unlimited and have had this plan going on six years so lets see 12x6=72x30=2160. That's 2,160 reasons why I don't need to explain myself about how or why I use my phone

I hope you all know eventually they are going to remove the unlimited data plan from everyone. Even when I had unlimited my 3g speeds were so slow on my old phone I never used it, I never even hit 1gb and I still haven't. The most I have ever used was 500mb. But I guess you guys can do as you please since you have unlimited. They can't stop you until they take it away...

Sad thing is I watched a sales rep convice a friend to switch and she got an iPad thinking there's no way I can use all that data they are offering.....sadly she called me the next day saying Verizon ****ed me now......now she's right around same price monthly and is limited

^ interesting. I'm new to Verizon and the phone so I have a limited plan but a co worker of mine long time Verizon person has the unlimited plan he says they tried with him also to change the plan he refused. That's some pretty high usuage you use hehe. I can def see how it can be pretty high I don't use my carrier internet to much but just from streaming music and uploading pictures alone gets me a lot of usage.

Out of curiosity, what are you doing to use that much data? The highest I've gone was like 10 gigs. I don't think I could go any higher if I tried.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm about to get my Droid RAZR replaced to a DNA through warranty and the rep told me I had to pay for the battery and battery cover... I was under the impression that the battery was non-removable. I even have another thread asking this very question and the answer I got was that it was not removable.

Would you be kind enough to explain to someone (a noob) who isn't knowledgeable enough as to understand how a user could use 200 gb a month?
Could someone use 2000gb......8000gb....or a lot more then that a month?
Please tell me how that would be possible even given exaggerated use. I am new to this, and really don't know.
Thanks,
Dan

Looking to switch from my Note 3 to G3 tomorrow before work. Only thing stopping me is I forgot whether or not tethering is still free or if that's only when rooted(which I know we have) and ROM'd.
I have unlimited(will be using parents upgrade cause they don't care about phones and still both have the LG enV 3) of course so it's non issue in terms of paying extra for easily going over the data cap.
And WOW. I was expecting going in and paying 200bucks. Had no idea it was 99 on contract.
Edit - A mod can move this to the questions section, I completely forgot. Sorry!

Okay, awesome. Thanks!
WiFi Tether Router, on play store, is another option. A simpler install (Just run the apk), and you don't have to reset/change settings each time you run it.
Assuming your on verizon you can use your upgrade and transfer it to one of your parents lines. This would renew your unlimited contract for two years, get you a new phone and keep your parents upgrades available for them. Once you activate the phone on one of their lines just take it back off and activate the phone on your line. The subsidized phone is what triggers the tierd data package so as long as its activated on a non unlimited line the first time its activated youll be good.

Sorry to be a party pooper but... VZW just recently made a policy change about two months ago. If you buy a cellphone at a reduced cost (2 year contract) and switch the new phone (even manually by calling in, or on My Verizon), you WILL lose unlimited data. You will be forced to. This means if you EVER switch to that phone within the next 2 years, they WILL remove your unlimited. Verizon does not want ANYONE on unlimited data, because they make grossly insane amounts of money getting people to move up to higher and higher data plans. Don't ask me how I know this, because I'm treading a fine line....

I'm not spreading false information. If you were able to keep your unlimited data, that's awesome! Someone at Verizon was willing to go outside official policy and allow you to keep it. How do I know? I am a Verizon Employee of over 5 years. OFFICIAL policy is, we must take away the unlimited. Is it right? Hell no. But that's greedy corporate America.
Dont assume I don't know what I'm talking about. I know far better than you.

This is just not true if you do it manually. I have done it two times in as many months (once being today actually). Each line is considered a contract so Verizon can't remove and add features without your concent.
How are you proposing they take away the unlimited data if the phone is switched? Instantly or manually by you guys? Also, what about the people who sell their phones? Wouldn't that take anyone's unlimited data if it was then activated on the recipients account?

What you have explained is confusing at best and misinformation at worst.
Upgrading a line and the moving the phone to a line with unlimited will never modify the target line.
You have just changed equipment. As long as the line is compatible with the device moving to the line there is no issue.
Alternate line upgrades move the upgrade to another line.
The contract gets extended on the original line but you don't lose the unlimited data.
Move the phone back to the original line and there is no issue.
Unlimited data is a feature and they cannot change features without consent from the line holder.
Also you you can swap the SIM card at will for an unlimited line with no effect.
Bringing equipment to an unlimited line (as long as the equipment is valid) does nothing.
It's treated like customer owned equipment.
If what you are saying is true, then buying a subsidized phone from another individual will cause changes on your plan.
It does not.

The guy is obviously a troll and it is pretty obvious he works at Verizon...he's full of misinformation to try to scare people off unlimited. Sorry to go offopic...
Actually guys what he is saying might have a little bit of truth to it. I bought my G3 on launch day at my local corporate store. I'm a unlimited user and had a line with a upgrade so was going to upgrade it then have them switch the phones and put my basic phone back on. They didn't want to do it, since I'm good friends with a few of them they went ahead but told me the exact same thing this guy is telling us. They said they are not allowed to do that anymore. I stated to them what makes the difference after I leave to switch SIM cards out and call them and have them put basic service on the other line. What makes the difference if I break this phone and need to swap it out for one of my others. They said outside the store u can do what u want, they just ain't suppose to anymore in the store so hopefully this clears up a little of what this guy is saying.

I have 4 lines. 2 are my primary and 2 are dummy lines. My 2 primary are on month to month. My 2 dummy lines are eligible for upgrade. I used those lines to get the LG G3. Activated it on my dummy lines. Deactivated them and put it on my primary. Put back my dummy phones and I still have unlimited which is still month to month. Dummy lines are eligible for upgrade in 2016
