[think tank] WP 7 on the Vibrant? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I personally think having the option of running windows phone 7 on the Vibrant would be freakin' awesome, but god only knows what a nightmare porting it over would be (and I'm not even a dev). Anyway, it just struck me as a cool idea, and I was wondering what any devs or user had to say bout it. Basically my question is, is it possible? And if so, how hard would it be?

Flame suit on?
Personally I'm done with windows mobile. They've had years to improve it and another 3 years to revamp the Windows mobile 6 platform to get it to even slightly compete with either iPhone OS or Android, and look here.....nothing happened. Mini version of Windows with a tiny start menu has just not been the way to go....stubborn bastards.
Whatever I've seen of Windows phone 7 has been disappointing so far because it seems to affected/infected by Bing. I'll decide on things myself thank you very much Microsoft. Windows on a laptop on the other hand = FTW.

well-said.

That wil never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever happen ever. Windows CE kernel is closed source, everything in the WP7 environment is closed source, so unless we make some compatibility magic... Or maybe one of our pirates can go into the MS headquarters and steal some source/documentation....... It will never happen. And aside from getting it to start up, the GSM modem and other radios will not work, nothing else will work, and it will just be a big pain in the ass.
You're not alone. I would love to boot WM 6.5 on my Vibrant and have it magically work. Hell, maybe even that ****ty iOS 4. Or how bout webOS! THAT would be nice, with the multitasking and such...

That's true, though I did like to have the mini start menu in my pocket, lol. Good old WM6 (and 5) Professional... Felt like I really had my PC in my pocket, hence the name PocketPC.

LOL and while you're there, ask him for the entire set of Windows 7, WP7 and Xbox 360 software documentation, and ask for a copy of the source code for every single project at Microsoft, including the Xbox 360's security methods. Then put it online anonymously! That'll bring their stock waaaaaaaay down......

You could easily call me a Google fanboy, but when it comes down to Google vs. Bing, they really arent that different. What is it about Bing that you dislike so much?
And as for WP7 itself, I dont plan on switching from Android but Ive got a Zune HD, and it easily has one of the best UI's around. WP7 is really a Zune phone when it comes down to it. I know Id love to try it out.

Dell Reportedly Releasing Android Version of Venue Pro (Dell Venue)

Interesting indeed! Don't see this happening too often, manufacturers releasing the same phone with different OS.
Lol, yeah I just heard about that. This could explain why they haven't released many details about the Venue Pro while all the other manufacturer's phones have already been reviewed.
BTW, where is that Asus phone!? It was sexy as hell.
Whilst they may release a similar phone with Android, it won't be identical because it won't have the Windows Phone hardware keys. It will effectively be a different model, even if the differences are subtle.
But Android is a festering abortion anyway.

Well it is. It tried to be an iPhone but has ended up being a WM6.5. And it's made by an Advertising Vendor.
Isn't this just the "Thunder" that we've known about for months and months. The one that Engadget gave a preview of some time ago. I'll dig up some links...:
Thunder was revealed in April: http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/21/dell-thunder-explodes-android-with-4-1-inch-oled-screen-promise/
They got their hands on it in August: http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/exclusive-dell-thunder-prototype-preview-video/
I've seen this story pop up on a few sites, and none of them have realised we already knew about this...
Just another flavor of Android. Not too interesting. I am ready for some WP love... on second thought that sounds gross. I am really excited for the Dell Venue Pro w/ WP& though.
Interesting comments...but I have to differ...I was using and cooking WM 6/6.5 for years, and have used it for years. But switching to Android has been a complete breathe of fresh air...it's leaps and bounds ahead of WM in my opinion.
it needs webos and then it would be the best phone out in the market

Dude, my twitching left buttock is better than WM. Go play with WP7 for another breath of that fresh air.
Windows Mobile was never a crappy OS, it just had an unintuitive UI. JUst like other people have said, it's probably still the most feature packed OS available.

CAN ANYONE COOK WINDOWS ROM FOR HTC DROID???
PLEASE LET KNOW IS IT POSSIBLE OR NOT?? IF YES THEN HOW...?
There is a windows7.apk out there, that is used as the launcher it looks pretty damn close to windows. and has some cool features
I don't know why you would want to do this, but if these phones are anything like a real computer (which it seems they are) then I doubt a Windows mobile OS Rom could be made for it. Its just cause it simply lacks the support for the hardware. I could be wrong tho.

Just a joke, but my initial impression of that picture was that it was either a steaming pile of **** or a nuclear explosion being fiercely blown sideways by the wind.
Seriously, though, last I read Microsoft is officially developing Windows 8 to also run on ARM processors. I'm sure not the Eris' ARM v6, but...
In other news, BlueStacks is out in Alpha, which will allow synchronizing and using Android Apps on a Windows 7 PC/tablet. Downloaded, but haven't tested yet.

then i have to break it down for them.
i tell them that iphone is dead n my Radar is alive #live tiles,
Haha.
I thought I was the only one who got that. Its crazy that even after they see the live tiles they still don't realize its not an iPhone
Same here, my white HTC radar was confused as iPhone, and much worse, an iPod Touch.

Funny, people notice mine as something completely different as soon as they see it. They usually think it's an Android at first though.
I've had mine called an android & an iPhone. The funny thing was that even after I explained it was a windowsphone from Microsoft they looked at me crazy, like "No way Microsoft has something that cool!"
Sent from my Kick Ass Lil Radar using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
its a nice feeling when they all go "WOOOW!!! can i have it?" n my response "sure, but not this one of mine" double
You should say it is an iPhone just so your friends go and buy a Radar themselves
No one confused mine as iPhone, but most thought that HTC only makes Android phones and mine is one of them...
When I told them my HTC Radar is a windows phone, they said "Windows Mobile sucks!"
And now when Windows Phone is mentioned, everybody thought it must be a Nokia Lumia...
LOL
(Lumia 800 is way overrated btw)
promote the os
I just picked up my Radar a week ago. I haven't been around for people to see it yet. When people do see it, I'm going try to promote the Os/phone. I really like using WP7. I have android dual booting on my HD2 also. I have been using WP7 on my hd2 for along time now and its still great. The reason I picked up the radar is because I realized I was not helping the platform by just using a hacked rom on the Hd2. It would be for our benefits if we do promote our phone a little when people ask. That if you like the OS like me.
Ps. I'm not pay by anyone to write this. I'm just a WP fan.
only a black case will solve this problem!(a little bit)!!

Would htc ever leave android?

Some people speculate samsung will be leaving android. Would htc develop its own software also?http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57455054-94/would-samsung-ever-leave-android-new-ceo-drops-hints/
If one of them tried leaving Android, they would soon realize the mistake with their lost profits.
I am sticking with samsung. My galaxy s and galaxy s ii were simply too damn good. Even more when tizen os is android compatible
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
If samsung does leave as the article speculates, i would guess google would then buy htc. It would probably allow them to have a real hands on relationship with motorola and htc. We could benefit from that.

If you mean profits from apps, I'm not sure there are a lot from android, and if anyone was big enough to pull it off it would be samsung. Worlds largest cell phone maker I believe. I did see this article about amazon making a fair amount off of apps, so it can be done.http://blog.flurry.com/bid/83604/For-Generating-App-Revenue-Amazon-Shows-Google-How-to-Play
After reading the article i think this is speculation based off words taken out of context. If you remember when Sammy announced the SGS3 they were emphasizing the software and the overall experience rather than the hardware and the power. I'm willing to be that they will start making a stronger push with Bada, but too much money is being made from the millions of galaxy devices.
The reason why HTC is as popular of a company as they are now is because of Android. They certainly weren't going to go anywhere if they invested heavily in their Windows Mobile 6.5 line. And even if they put all their eggs into the Windows Phone 7 basket, it's still not going to get them anywhere. There are more Android phones in circulation than any other phone OS on the market, it would be stupid to leave Android.
It would be a huge mistake even on Samsung's part to develop their own OS and leave android. Samsung just has to decide if they're powerful enough to accomplish it (and hey if anyone can it's probably them). Android already has many loyal users and a huge developer base, only way a new OS would be successful is to accomplish this same thing and that would not be an easy task. I don't really believe Samsung will abandon Android, maybe experiment with but that's it. I don't think HTC will either.
What the effect be on android\google if samsung did leave? It would leave them only with motorola and htc as major players correct? People always talk about fragmentation, maybe that would help solve that problem. If htc then sold a ton more phones we could then maybe end up with a better product and lets be honest htc's future is a little bit cloudy at best. (forgot about lg, do they count?)
leave android for what microsoft? LOL. Android is the only competition for Apple.. microsoft is a joke..

If you are speaking of samsung, it would be to create their own OS\interface. The article was quite interesting. They are big enough and have enough money to do it, but would it be accepted is the question. I don't know if htc would have the money to do that.
htc is in dire straits financially, they already sacked their CFO, tried changing their business tactics a few times and got worse and worse results so they could get desperate enough to do something really drastic.
the problem is, what? making their own OS and forcing the market to adopt it is WAY out of their reach, they could have got on board of microsoft boat with nokia but now that microsoft is building their own hardware it has become a really, really bad move (Zune, anyone?), maybe there's sony with a viable alternative but dont look like a really profitable option.
btw, Samsung ditching Android? what? the only group that is actually making money - a lot of money - without any investment? that's just crazy.
CNET is dumb as hell. Where would HTC,Samsung, and Motorola be without android right now? Samsung has never been as profitable without the galaxy s series and the evo 4g gave HTC a huge amount of brand awareness. They have nowhere else to go and I think they are ok with that. Android is a rock solid and profitable platform.

But where does the profit come from? If it from apps it doesn't appear android is actually doing all that well, in fact amazon is doing a better job at it according to this article..http://blog.flurry.com/bid/83604/For-Generating-App-Revenue-Amazon-Shows-Google-How-to-Play. If samsung leaves thats a huge chunk of phones developers wont have to make money from. Android will be hurting if the developers leave also.
Samsung won't leave Android. This whole article is a huge speculation at an attempt at getting views. For one, the WSJ article it links to says a stronger look at proprietary software for smartphones, not operating system. That can be anything from touchwiz to apps for controlling their SmartTV's. The author jumps to the conclusion of a Samsung OS.
Think about it logically. Remember why Google actually bought Motorola. And look at the Author's intent.... Which is obviously to get hits.

Yeah, just like Nokia......They made a big mistake because they decided to follow windows. Nokia just launched a new winphone (lumia 900) with win7 os but yesterday microsoft launched win8 os and announced that any winphone with win7 os are unable to upgrade to win8. So I dont think Nokia will get through their bad time.
Windows 8 is terrible I don't see anybody going from android to windows.. I think people would rather jump the dark side

End of the Road for 6month device ?

Lets not kid ourselves on the 7.8 update folks, as its not going to offer anything more than resizing the tiles.
Now that we have been abandoned, we should demand that HTC/microsoft release the source and unlock the bootloaders so we can flash an OS of our choosing.
I believe that ICS would run smoothly on our radars. If it could be done with HD2, it can be done with the radar.
What do you folks think?
Does ics run smoothly on hd2?

Well, we already have a EOL device at the 6 month Mark, give or take. Microsoft said they didn't want fragmentation like android, but here it comes already. My radar is put back in the box and I'm back to android for functionality. My radar is the LAST WP product I will buy. Look at the poor bastards who jumped on the Lumia 900 just a couple months ago. I'm sorry but Microsoft had to know that all these new devices wouldn't run WP8, but they decided to snow ball their consumers instead of being open and honest.
Now Nokia has all these phones they built that I'm sure people won't buy now with the info just released. Nokia is already hanging by a thread.
End of rant....
My time is now done in Windows phone forums. Good luck guys.

@awrnsmn, I totally agree with you. I'm seriously considering selling it. Its shame thought, I love the hardware, and the battery is the best I've seen yet in a smartphone. And the dedicated camera button is superb. But, in the end, we all want functionality so I'm likely gonna list this on ebay.
I'm considering the HTC amaze but I've read mixed things on battery. I'm also looking into the ATrix 2.
android on htc radar
I guess we have to wait and see if there is anybody clever enough to get ics running on a radar. I guess i will give it a try when its there. Not because i need it, but because it can
I know I said my time was done here but.....well anyway. What bothers me the most about all of this is Microsoft was really on to something with WP, it could of been a fantastic os to rival the big 2, but with the decisions their making they're killing already......sad because I USED to like where they were going with it.
Sent from my AOKP'ed Samsung GS2 with Eugene's kernel
IMHO, after my contact is up I will be switching over to Android. *The next Nexus preferably* unless MS could come with something that will make me want to get WP8. Jelly Bean and Operation Butter literally kill my love for WP7.5. :crying:
