Hello,
We all know that the 2.1 update is near. My question is is it possible for our phones to be upgraded to 2.2 and beyond? Are x10 minis capable in terms of hardware (and software) to be upgraded to later Android versions, assuming that SE unlocks the bootloader (if they don't release an update, we'll just have to do it ourselves right?). I have read somewhere that some android phones will not see 2.1 and beyond and will be stuck with 1.6 forever. I hope our minis are capable since I am planning to own this phone for atleast 2 years....

2.1 update is confirmed from SE. x10 minis are capable of 2.2(froyo) but not the next release gingerbread. lets keep the fingers crossed that, developers unlocks the bootloader soon.
yes unlock boot loader.... plz, so we can update ourselves, to something better then what SE can do, what does sony loose by releasing the details?
I like the phone i dont like how their are so many apps im missing out on cause im stuck on 1.6 and the app needs 2.1
They have alot of reasons to keep their software protected. Not that I agree with their views, but they probably want to protect their software from piracy, seeing 3rd party apps replace their own, being able to control a part of the software on the phone, etc. etc.
Previously i owned an HTC phone, which will be the next one again. Not only for sense which imho is very nice, but also because of all the available software to costumize your phone just like you want it to be.

i mean the whole point of the development of applications is to make the phone yours. the moment a company relies that then the end user can have a lot of fun and make it stand out from everyone else's.
Lets hope the Bootloader is unlocked and someone develops a 2.2 ROM for it(Maybe copied from Wildfire as it gets 2.2 soon)
I agree we require 2.1, but in all reality the need for 2.2 is overly exagerated (apart from the slight performance boost). I'd rather have a fast browser than a buggy one which takes forever just to load a page.
Some of you gents obviously don't follow the HTC, Samsung, Motorola blogs otherwise you'd quickly realize how many bugs they're riddled with.
Give me a stable X10/mini/pro any day of the week.
I agree we need stable over buggy. Sony might be slow with the updates but it seems to be stable. maybe with this update they will be sloppy and make a mistake with the code in the boot loader that we can exploit
My guess is that SE will unlock the bootloader once the x10 family gets outdated and they have other models to develop updates.
BTW, just curious, have you any idea if once we've updated to 2.1, will the exploid root method or one-click root still work? Or, do we even need to unroot our devices to update to 2.1 using PC companion?
updating through seus/ota will most likely wipe all data from the phone, while I'm sure SE will implement security features to prevent us using "universal root" or flashing back to a 1.6 rom. So in answer to your question : No the exploid method will no longer work effectively.
Your options are:
Update the phone once 2.1 is released and wait for developers to root the phone again
Don't update and wait for developers to find a workaround which lets you update the phone with 2.1 but still keep the root.
Wait for the bootloader to be hacked on 1.6. Again this means not updating the phone when 2.1 come out.
At the moment I'm leaning toward the second option but I guess I'll wait and see what the feedback on 2.1 is like.

If that is the case, I might also choose the second option because I don't want to have to install and set all the apps and tweaking I did on my phone now. I'm sure devs can make a way so that we can go back to 1.6 after we've upgraded to 2.1.
I'll probably play with 2.1 and wait for the dev's to root 2.1 who knows they might be sloppy with the boot loader for 2.1

I just hope the bootloader gets cracked fast, as I do not trust SE with their updates. It's much more reliable to wait for someone here to make something useful for this phone, than to desperately ask SE to do something, and most of the times just get disappointed with the end result.
The main problem of this phone is, in my person opinion, that the main developers do not own or have much interest in it.
Not many people use it, and we can see by the frequency of the posts on this forum that it's mostly a second phone or a phone for our wife’s / girlfriends, etc.
If it had more popularity, the bootloader would probably already be cracked.
Just my 2 euro cents, hehe

I think you are right, this phone is not as popular as x10i. Plus since this phone is mostly secondry device/budget phone. The donation incentive is not pretty attractive.. May be if we can get enough donations, we can attract devs to crack it..
But I could be wrong on this observation..

Noob here. Long time on XDA, beginner in Android.
I haven't looked much here nor read much because this came up just today and don't have much time (so please don't bash, rather help me, thank you).
I have been looking forward to switch to Android but have not found a good priced phone within my price range. Today I stumbled across an Xperia X10 and I don't want it to slip away as within my price range.
Did a few readings on specs and it comes with Android 1.6.
Is the Xperia X10 upgradable to 2.1 or 2.2 Froyo(soon)?
Thank you for you help.

Devs are working on custom bootloader and seem to be making good progress, currently the answer is no, but soon hopefully custom roms will be out.
Also Sony Ericsson will be releasing 2.1 by September

Thank you NightSide for the quick reply.
Yes, I did read that in Q4, Sony will release 2.1 for all X10 series. But I thought that has something to do with the UI sony has.
However, there's something I don't get. Most 1GHz Android devices in the market will have upgrades to 2.2 Froyo in OCT and NOV. Why won't X10 as well.
One more very important question that I missed. Does the X10 have Multitouch? or will it be enable when 2.1 is available? Pinch to zoom, rotate etc.. Very important for me
I hate to say it, but if you are indieed a long time on XDA, then you'd know to search first... All your questions have been debated in the forum a number of times...

I do know NOW that X10 does not support multi touch, but had heard and read rumors that maybe on 2.1, x10 might get multitouch. And if not, a skilled member would find a way as already one of our members found a way for dual touch on a few phones (I know it works on TP2).
And it wouldn't have hurt my friend, to be nice and answer few of my questions. After all, we are here to help and I did say in my first post why I couldn't search.

Yup... you're right on that. Just rumors...
I thought it was confirmed that X10 would not be able to support DT or MT at all as it ain't just the s/w part but rather the h/w plays a role as well. And X10 don't have the h/w to do so... this is what I read... could be wrong.
Nonetheless, this is still a great phone for me. Sure there are 'flaws' here and there but nothing major. 'Upgraded' from X1... and not regretting it...
If you have a deal that fits your budget.... (if I were you) go get it...

Agreed, however you will find (if you search) that the answers to your questions are both yes and no... all you're really starting is another thread debating whether multitouch is or is not possible, and whether SE will go to 2.2 in the near future.
That aside, 2.1 is confirmed for Q4 - the rest, rumours, speculation, debate... but apart from that...

I remember reading from some dev thread that there indeed are drivers for multitouch in the kernel, but they are disabled or something. I'm pretty sure it will be investigated after we get custom roms etc.
Also note that the update to 2.1 is scheduled for Q3 not Q4, so it's coming earlier than you initially thought. There is however another update coming to enhance the SE UXP or whatever ie Timescape and Mediascape, that is scheduled for Q4 and is supposed to bring 720p video recording as well as media broadcasting on your TV...something like that.

MT/DT .. rumors.
We need custom roms to verify if it can be enabled by 3rd party but no custom roms yet.
Until then, if you don't want to be disappointed, consider that X10 doesn't have it.
2.1 was delayed it seems to Q4, i've read it on SE blog.
Some examples of user benefits that will be included in the UXP upgrade for Xperia™ X10 in Q4 2010 are:
- Upgrade to Android OS version 2.1
- HD video recording as per the same execution as Sony Ericsson Vivaz™
- Wireless home connectivity via DLNA
- Improvements to signature applications Timescape™ and Mediascape to make them even smarter and richer
The upgrade will be made available to consumers through the update service at www.sonyericsson.com

Time Out for you my friend!
Why even mention MT when you know it's likely to create a flaming war. I think mods should impose a 3 day ban on anyone using the words "mulit-touch" , "Flash" and "2.1/2.2 update" in an X10 forum.
2.1 update
I think this excitement and anticipation of the 2.1 update is going to followed by an almighty disappointing sinking feeling when we actually get it. Then a huge clamour for the 2.2 update will surely begin. It all really hangs in the balance as to what SE do with this update. If they compensate for 2.2 then users might be happy but I really doubt that 2.1 will suffice for most when all other new phones will spot 2.2(flash support, wifi tethering and all the rest). I think this anticipation has more to do with frustration with having 1.6 rather than optimism for 2.1. We wait to see how events unfold with interest.

Just wrote what I was thinking. I don't think SE will give us anything exceptional in 2.1 and all excitement will dampen and converted to frustration. Anyway, the phone is not bad - doing well with 1.6 - hope it will do better with 2.1.
The problem is with ever increasing mobile models with new features, OS, new hardwares teasing us and making our anticipation high from our existing device. Next we are frustrated when we see all new models with improved specs around us and go and buy another one when the old mobile is still perfect to do another one-two years. What a way to waste money!! In last one & half year I myself have bought three mobiles (total amounting to 65000.00 INR equivalent to 1200-130 USD which is quite high as per Indian standards) including this SE X10 mini and all the mobiles are infact perfectly OK and lying unused.
Don't stress guys. With any luck we'll have cyanogen mod 6 (a custom rom running 2.2) on our handsets shortly. This should negate the need to update the phone, even though most users won't be able to resist the temptation of a new rom running 2.1. Just remember, if you update you destroy the root and essentially ruin any chance of installing custom firmware. Personally I'll abstain from updating until we have a clearer picture of what XDA developers can achieve.

But at least they list what the update will actually contain:
Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro:
Improved Bluetooth functionality with support for sending and receiving pictures, contacts and more
New backup and restore application with extended content back up
Automatic synchronization of your contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book
Improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in your messages

Hundreds of people crying about never buying a SE again
To be honest the 2.1 update doesn't really do much for these phones. However it is obvious that SE didn't give too much attention to the fact that using Android meant that their timeplans would be compared against those of many other Android licensors. Also I think they underestimated that a large part of the Android community is made of geeks. They are used to selling phones to people who don't even know what an operating system is.
In reality this delay means almost nothing but it's a PR disaster.

Totally agree with you !
lol - for undemanding users, Apple have sewn up that segment of smartphone users. Maybe RIM too. Symbian.. are they smartphones/will they be around much longer?
But Windows & Android require more maintenance. As a SE owner for the last 5? years, I can attest to their serial ability to miss deadlines.
However, this is new for them, the need to sew on their interface to a constantly evolving OS. So expect more missed deadlines, and slow adoption of 2.2
But I can't say I'm surprised...
I am not an Android expert but if that GUI stuff they have done is so difficult to port from 1.6 to 2.1 then they must have taken very poor decisions when developing the software. Look at the Android Market: 95% of the applications will run on any version from 1.6 to 2.2 without even the need to recompile the code.

Pfff My unbranded HTC Hero had eclair (android 2.1) installed almost a year ago. And yes also HTC had official problems with release dates for 2.1.

Updates were quicker?? I had 2 WM phones, a Prophet and my current X1, and NO updates were forthcoming. I was saved only by the excellent work of the cooks here.
I like my X10 Mini even with 1.6.
It runs faster and is more stable than my Galaxy S with 2.1.
Maybe we are overcrying this release delay. Our phone is not unusable, other companies are delaying even more. I have seen in the blogs people crying like they have an non-usable phone. The only real problem is the Sim issue that in some countries they have adresses in some others not.
In reality our community want just to change firmware and this is why we are here in xda.
I am also annoyed, I am also willing to update my firmware every month...but for this we need the support of our chefs.
By the way i understand that a SW planning can deviate; in our company we have just postponed a release by one month.
I agree that the communication was bad, they could even have released an interim version for us the geek.
This is just MHO

And I think it is almost great phone, nice camera, good video quality for little phone and I can make calls and sms. Compared to my old E51 this phone rocks! No lag etc. I don't get why, just why are people flaming SE...Yes I know it was a mistake to promise something what they can't to. Well I'm also waiting for update, but I'm not so curious about it.

This would also mean that x8, x10 mini and x10 mini pro will be obliged to receive further Android updates. Since the guidelines from google also include already released phones.
Since the Release of the mini/mini pro its almost a year so we would still have a few months left on our updates.
Lets hope SE decides to do it.
Is it not only for "new devices"?
On a german news site a read it will also include older devices. But i guess we will have to wait and see

Official Gingerbread would be pretty nice, I'm thankful for nobodyatall's and the other developers work on their custom ROMS, right now the VGA-only camera and lack of Flash is the only thing stopping me from moving over to MiniCM7.
Hmm. This is very interesting and I can't believe Google is coming to our rescue (really they're just defending their business etc. but we benefit).
I notice in the article it does say new devices. But yes our Minis are still under SE's 2 year update. However, SE have bullshi**ted before about what these phones are capable of re: X10 dualtouch etc. then release it. But, our devices under SE's 2 years and the new Minis on 2.3 makes me think that there is still a chance. I've read some devs on here say that much will be different in the new Minis and porting the software in the future will likely not work, but I still think SE could port it themselves via an official 'generic' release like they did with the X10. Not telling us that now saves them 5million questions every day about when we get it. Let's hope something is leaked...I LOVE leaks...

What are these April 2011 updates certified? Has anyone discussed them?...
Phoney, I think you'll be more than pleasantly surprised with the MiniCM7 ROM from Owain and Slade87. I've been using it for two weeks now and found the upgrade process very simple. The rom offers dual touch, access to the full 256mb of internal storage, very easy to put your apps onto sd, you can run it faster than the 600 Mhz specified by Sony, its a very stable rom.
Just make sure you do a backup first, you can always recover back to the standard SE rom, then you'll realise just how bad it is.
You'll turn your mini pro into a brand new, sexy rom for only a few hours (probably less than that) work.
I also use Owain and Slades Custom ROM and ist very Stable , Fast and works great
Its worth to update that rom!
And i think that SE will not bring bigger updates for us!! so Iam lucky that this community have so great DEVS
So big thx to Owain and Slade87
In my opinion, we should encourage SE to update our devices to gingerbread..
Personally I would only have a peak and probably return to the ROM I'm currently using (NobodyAtAll's CM7 ASOP). The main advantage i see here however is that things like full 5mp camera support etc.. would be much simpler to obtain if it just becomes a question of moving the various files and drivers from SE's 2.3.4 to NAA's or any other CM7/2.3 rom
i'd rather using your ROM slade , its alot better xD

w00t! If they update us to GB or even Froyo, that means they will need to update the kernel to support functionality in the new versions. (e.g. tethering/iptables) Keeping my fingers crossed.
Unless I'm mistaken, that Google agreement mentioned ONLY NEW devices. There is no news, as far as I know right now, that this covers devices already released. I just thought I'd say this before people start blowing up balloons - there is absolutely no hint of 2.3 for our Minis by SE so I don't know where people get the excitement from.
I don't know whether you've read about the security issues regarding the vulnerability of the android phones
blogs.computerworld.com/18304/scary_android_security_hole_in_99_of_phones_panic?af[/url]
(sorry, can't post links yet)
but in whatever way google tackles this problem, this issue might prompt them to release further updates to every android phone. Article says only versions 2.3.4. or later are safe.
I read this indeed ^^^^ and I think Google is much more serious about updating than manufacturers. I don't know what kind of pressure they might exert on manufacturers to update recently released devices both because of this security issue (before 2.3) and because of that new 18 month agreement for updates. Here's hoping.
Hope we get updated...
I think they should hire owain and slade - that would solve lot of things
It's only for NEW devices and unfortunately SE doesn't say anything about us
So I'm new to the whole Android scene and rooting and such. So what are the most common things to do when you root it? And also since HTC is releasing the ICS update soon should I wait until after it comes out to root it? I'm coming from an iPhone so I'm still have limited knowledge in this but do have experience modding a bunch of devices.
Thanks.

As of now the only real advantage of rooting is is removing the bloatware.
You can also backup, restore and experiment with custom roms (very limited number to date however) that give you a few other minor options such as the wifi calling that HTC pulled right after the release of the device.
So far we are not able to overclock or anything like that because HTC hasn't released the kernel source yet.
Be aware that you void your warranty by rooting according to the htcdev site. You'll get the notice when you unlock your bootloader.
By the way... odds are that we'll have ICS way before HTC releases the update to our phones. So if you do decide to root you will probably have ICS months before the official update is released. You can literally go around and show everyone the new update weeks before they get it themselves. Kind of a cool feeling.

Thanks for all that info. It's good to know that I can backup and restore and experiment with custom roms. I heard about bricking your phone and was afraid to mess around with it because of that. I liked on the iPhone how if you messed up you could just restore it and start over. And just to clarify rooting unlocks the bootloader right? Or is that something different?
Thanks.
there is no way to brick your phone right now becuase htc only allows you certian access that wont brick it you can restore if things go bad
