Guys, I'm currently on AT&T in the U.S. with a Samsung Captivate. My GPS and random shut downs are giving me major headaches. Not sure if I want to deal with it any more or try to get a replacement, so I was thinking about switching to the X10.
Just wonder if anyone here came from a Captivate and can offer some review of the two phones. Thx.
I like multitouch and super brilliant screen, but a working GPS is more important to me.
View have both their advantages! I would say x10 has: battery time, best display for reading text, camera, stability, GPS..
Personal Opinion
hey dont know about the captivate, as i live in australia but i work in a telco shop and ive played with the galaxy s, and i really think its a great phone but too many issues currently and really lags over time, as for myslef i got the x10 mainly for the camera and stability, as much i the super amoled screen is great, (ive had omnia II i8000) and im over it. id rather a great 8mpx camera and flash on it, nice looking phone although captivate is also great.
but it really comes down to whats important for you like same thing i tell customers, it comes down to the features you looking for, more or less they are very similar phones but a few things here and there is what tis the scale for different people.
i also tell people to play with both see which is more intuitive for YOU. simple as that

I had the Captivate for a week before switching it out for the x10. Together with the above I found the reception and call quality much better on the x10.
Just so you get a full picture, here are the X10 issues:
1) Low incall volume/ring volume. It's loud enough for me but many people complain.
2) Longer waiting times for new android versions. SE made a slick UI for it but that makes you wait a lot for updates. It's running 1.6 and it's stable, 2.1 should be out in October, but if you have a demand for a function that needs 2.2 (ie: flash 10) then get another phone.
3) Battery life when the display is on. When I use it for GPS on the car battery lasts 5/6 hours only so you'll need a car charger. On regular use as a phone and about 30 min internet browsing per day it can last 2/3 days.
4) No multitouch support.
There are no perfect phones, just make sure you understand what you're getting and whether it suits your needs or not.
To be honest with you , after 5 months of using the X10 , it is a very good Sony Ericsson's mobile , but not a good Android Device.
if you are looking for a mobile to use then it will be more than enough, but if you are looking for an Android Device then it is not the right one.
@solo13 - Why?? I'm not sure I understand why you say it's not a "good" android device??
Is it the OS version? We all know that's going to be 2.1 soon..?? Or is it something else that makes this not a good android phone for you?

just have a look at http://www.google.com/phone
and do a comparison between the X10 and any other device .
the main failure is in the RAM and the internal Memory
RAM Is 384MB meanwhile other devices is 500MB (( Android requires at least 200MB))
Internal Memory is 1GB meanwhile other devices has 8GB or 16GB ( Fresh X10 has only 440MB Free) .

But X10 comes with a 8Gb SD card.
Of course, is not as fast as the internal but ...
The internal memory is a toss-up no matter what operating system you're running. Some phones have more, some less. Are one of the smaller capacity iPhones not as 'good' of an iPhone as the larger capacity ones? If you know what you need then why get more?
Besides, not relying on internal storage isn't a bad thing. If your phone dies you've lost the data stored in the internal memory. With a memory card you can pull the card out and you're good to go.
Moving from my W760 > C905 > Tilt2 > X10 was a simple matter of pulling my memory card and plugging it into my next contestant. (Barring of course copying the data from my m2 to micro sd card). No need to go back to the old phone for anything, except the C905 for the camera experience.
Mine came with a 16gb card. The only nice thing Rogers has ever done.

Unless you're a lucky buyer who had a grandfathered unlimited data plan the current plan for $ 15/200mb is totally designed to fail since android phones are all apparently set to switch to 3g when the screen blanks. I am at home or office both with wifi and have thousands of public wifi in my area which my phone logs into automatically but because of updating when the screen is blanked have used most of my data in my first week. I am now tethered to a outlet with my phone connected so the screen won't blank. I refuse to pay att another $300 a year.

The default on the device is to turn off WiFi when the screen blanks but this is user changeable.
Settings>Wireless Controls>WiFi Settings>Menu>Advanced>WiFi Sleep Policy.
I have mine set to "Never".

Aha.....thanks
After doing this for a few days now, I find the battery lasts about 15 hours with moderate usage. I'm always in WiFi area, at home, at work, even most of my traveling locally thanks to my cable company investing in a wifi network for it's customers as a 'competitive advantage' over FIOS. http://www.optimum.net/WiFi/Find
25% of the battery will be used for wifi support in this mode.
I totally agree with ruskival, switching from phone to another depend on ur needs and features u r seeking for. So decide what features u love most and then decide. I will help u some also, i have choosed balance, nice camera, nice design, needed open source OS, knowing that all android 3 reviews tells that it is desined for big tabs such as the 7" screen samsung tabs or u will not benifit of its real power. So i can wait another year untill getting the2.2 update as it will be the last needed for a phone. Issues like low involume call doesnt bother me much and am sure it will be solved in the future. I also like time escape and media escape as they provide me with new sync experience. So unless ur looking for OS fast updates, am sure u will be happy using an x10
Best wishes

It doesn't matter for me now as I went from 140mb in 5 days to 15mb in 8 days. There's so much wifi around me that is available at home/work and traveling that I can be on it all day and use my phone as I wish.
For me, since I only have ATT UMTS at 2.5mb in my general area, the local cable company's wifi is 3mb and less laggy. I only wish the X10 had "N" bonding so that I could take advantage of my dual band "N" network at home and at work. I would love to see 150mb or better on wifi. This alone is/was one of the reasons that the Captivate interests me.

Hey pals im thinking to get a new android phone & im thinking to buy Lg optimus 1 . So howz this phone n i see only 2-3 custom roms available for it . BTW howz its speed of handling games n apps on it thnks
Best value for money at the 220euros price range, for sure!
So how much you wanna spend?
What are your needs?
Internet surfing, gaming, music, battery life demands?, movie watching, gps ?
For my needs is more than ok so far, it has everything i need... so..
1) what's your budget
2) your needs
The P500 was my first Android phone. Before I had the Samsung SGH-D500 so a HUGE jump of ages xD Of course I'm not old school I heavily used a iPodTouch 2G before. (Same prices more or less) For ME its enough and I can't wait for a good 2.3 ROM on that device. But if I NOW would have the choice I maybe would wait. Since LG is releasing the first DualCore Smartphone soon. But I took the Optimus One. And I think I bought the right device from the right company at the right time.
It looks good is not to big it can receive calls, SMS and E-Mails and stuff. Playing isnt really possible yet because of a touchscreen bug. Which hopefully get fixed with Android 2.3. And if I take a look on the hardware you get more then you pay. So its really a good choice if you dont want to spend that much money on a mobile phone. Also a good choice would be the Samsung wave which costs around 100€ more but does have extremly good hardware. (Like a Galaxy S i9000) However that one uses Bada NOT Android which was the reason why I didnt took it. But there are only a few good arguments why you should take a Android phone over Bada. So its up to you.

bro what toch screen bug r u talking about ??
sometimes the mobile takes a bit of time to register your touch. say, typing a msg. sometimes you type 2-3 letters & than only the letters will appear. but this is random & its not that it becomes totally unusable. just a bit annoying at times as it limits your typing speed & so will affect games that needs you to make a lot of touch control (no D-pad or scroll here).

It was my first android, and i think it is awesome. Some of my friends are using X8, Wildfire, X10. This phone's hardware worths more than its price, and believe me, it is an awesome choice to step into the world of android!
The only time I've ever noticed any significant lag was during the beginning of each level of Angry Birds. Other than that it has been great.
The phone is nice but check this thread for a common problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894210
nice work
nice work man...Custom ROMS to meet every person's taste.. GOOD WORK !!
This phone is the ideal way to get to know Android, imho.
It has decent performance (mainly because it is not memory restricted as many other phones are, X8 and original Samsung Galaxy come to mind), it comes with Froyo and LG has already promised a Gingerbread upgrade (though that will probably take a while to arrive), and it has no annoying quirks with regards to ordinary phone functions.
I come from the original Samsung Galaxy, which cost twice the amount and is still stuck with android 1.6 and incredibly low RAM memory (okay so the screen was awesome and it had 8GB internal storage). There was also a problem with the proximity detector which meant that I often accidentally hung up on people while talking on the phone.
None of that bull**** on this one, it works really well. I suggest you pair it with noejn's excellent Void. rom (beautiful black theme and very configurable!)
The only other budget android phone which might even be better is the ZTE Blade (aka San Francisco) because it's cheaper and because more ROMs are available.
Other decent budget androids:
- x8: stuck on 2.1, low RAM and no roms available afaik
- samsung apollo/europa: low resolution, stuck on 2.1 afaik
- HTC Wildfire: nice phone, but low resolution and slower processor
- that's about it, at least what's available around here...
- samsung apollo/europa: low resolution, stuck on 2.1 afaik
It already has Froyo.

Certain versions have about 150 MB of free memory available. IMHO that's "memory restricted" for a phone sold today.
Depends on whether we're talking about ram or flash memory I'm talking about ram and no, a phone with 512MB still qualifies as well-endowed!
Sent from my LG-P500 on Void.
would you still recommend void over one of the two gingerbread ports; either cm7 or the other? thanks!
I'd still recommend void over the Gingerbread ROMs at this point. It may not be the latest and greatest, but everything works.
GB roms are in alpha phase, one big benefit with VIOD is that the google Ads are blocked, if google ads are blocked in GB roms, then i am happy to use it...
I believe you can't get Adobe Flash on the phone because of the mediocre CPU used.
Hey there,
Just noticed there isn't the whole 1Gb of ram available for Android to use......
Does this alter performance???
Is it allocated for graphics or the webtop??
Is there any way to remove the allocations for the addresses so they are all for Android OS???
Currently there's only 8xx.x MB available...
Cheers guys....... (just weird future-proofing questions)
About 300mb of ram is reserved by the OS.
Its divided up. Half or a little over half is dedicated to the OS. and the remaining of it is for webtop
They state 1gig because there literally is 1gig of pc memory (which they call it)
So out of the 1GB, about 300mb ish is used by android, leaving 700mb ish available to the phone/user? Or is say 500mb of the remaining 700 reserved for the laptop dock, so the phone can only access/use to run apps etc on 200mb? Sorry for sounding a bit thick, but i'm confused.
Thanks
Ian

Um, i don't actually have the phone yet? just wanted to make sure that if i buy an atrix, it has the full 1gb of ram available for use (Minus operating system needs, so about 700 - 800mb ish?). I don't intend to purchase a laptop dock, or at least not straight away, so i'm hoping the phone can use the full 700+mb remainder for multi tasking, gaming, etc etc
Thanks

System uses 250-350mb. You usually get 550-650Mb free in a fresh restart with no widgets on the launcher. My phone's free memory is usually 350-450Mb and i use a lot of apps, widgets and running services. Phone is always snappy.
There's misleading information stating that half of the phone's memory is reserved for webtop/laptop dock. That's not true

The selling point for me, with the Atrix, is the docking capabilities. It seems that Motorola is the only Android manufacturer that understands how important this is. Apple sells a lot of devices because of docking and accessory capability.
This is where Samsung fails for the most part.
I understand that this may not be important to some people, but it is to me. The car dock creates a simple dock solution to play music and use maps from the phone. This is preferable to bluetooth streaming by far. The dock provides audio out via USB so you do not have to plug anything into the phone after docking. The same is true for the HD dock and the Laptop dock. Also, the laptop dock allows you to close the lid and still play music from it's speakers.
The bottom line here is simple. There are pros and cons to every device. There is no single device that can be considered the best for everyone.
Having said that, I have never had a Samsung mobile device that wasn't cheap feeling. The SAMOLED screens are beautiful but they are surrounded by cheap feeling materials. It all comes down to personal opinion.

I know i won't need more than 700, but what i didn't know was if the phone could access the whole of the 700 if it had too (say playing a resource heavy game while having something running in the background - no laptop dock involved), or whether or not the 700 was divided into separate 2 sections - one for phone usage, and one for laptop dock usage? There seems to be conflicting answers when searching.
Thanks

There's no such "partition" of RAM. The webtop environment uses the RAM available when needed by does NOT reserve it! Whenever you are not using Webtop, phone will use the amount of RAM available, either 700, 600 or 500Mb or so.

It may be up to 1.5ghz already, but for all its speed, right now it's crap for playing games on (or at least the exynos version is), which is something i shall be doing alot of with my new device. But everybody has different needs from their phone. My No1 need is gaming development and support. Any phone thats got an Nvidia chip in it has a gaming advantage.

Of course the 8GB Nexus 4 will sell! Dirt cheap price for a top of the line device with no contract = win. For me the storage isn't a huge issue, mainly the locked bootloader and tons of VZW crapware on the phone. Who knows if HTC will offer the dev unlock for this device..They have been bending over to Verizon a lot as of late. Hopefully this doesn't turn into the old troll Rezound forum.

I have to try to figure out how much I will want to. It's tough to tell as I don't like most games out now, but if Assassin's Creed gets a real pc like release like GTA3 etc then I might want to a decent amount. Then again, maybe the controls on the phone will be annoying and I won't ever really want to and could get by with N64oid in situations where I have to sit around for a bit. I'd feel dumb giving up the amazing camera and screen if I don't end up using more space. I miss the good old upgradability of desktops and laptops.
I dont know why people are saying that
The general theme in this particular forum is that the sd card slot is getting phased out. How exactly did people come up to that conclusions. Samsung note II will have a slot supporting up to 64 gb straight out of the box. So does the s3.
The nexus line has long kept to that tradition because google like ppl to use their cloud services.
Just because HTC decided to bend over to verizon , doesn't mean that its the new technology standard.
Between limited data and limited storage , i feel like they are really suffocating the user here.
What amazes me is that we keep moving backwards as time goes by because of corporate greed.
we lost unlimited data and now space on our phones and all happening legally and we sit and just watch.
I dont see any benefit what so ever from limited sd card capacity. it has no stability or performance impact at all.
They said lets limit data to protect our network, and users swallowed it , now what is their rationale for limiting the sd card?

we lost unlimited data and now space on our phones and all happening legally and we sit and just watch.
I dont see any benefit what so ever from limited sd card capacity. it has no stability or performance impact at all.
They said lets limit data to protect our network, and users swallowed it , now what is their rationale for limiting the sd card?

Verizon taking away unlimited data wasn't them trying to be evil, it was a business decision that allowed for them to quickly expand a 4G network that will be anywhere 3G was by the end of next year. If people still had the same unlimited data plans, verizon wouldn't have been able to spend as much on the network upgrades, and the 4G network might had speed issues by a lot of people using it as their home internet. Everyone complains about Verizon being expensive, but then wishes other networks had coverage and speeds of verizon. Considering how much people use and rely on their smartphones, their plans aren't that bad.
Now if you go into the old days of all the networks charging people for texts which literally take up 0 resources, that's a different story.

maybe, just maybe (and no i will not be holding my breath), once vzw gets their 4g fully deployed they might bring unlimited data back
You're kidding, right?

The general theme in this particular forum is that the sd card slot is getting phased out. How exactly did people come up to that conclusions. Samsung note II will have a slot supporting up to 64 gb straight out of the box. So does the s3.
The nexus line has long kept to that tradition because google like ppl to use their cloud services.
Just because HTC decided to bend over to verizon , doesn't mean that its the new technology standard.

As a loyal Verizon Wireless Business customer, I'm completely dumbfounded. One of the main reasons I left the iPhone was due to no SD card.
On my Rezound, the internal storage is FULL with apps only and the 32GB SDHC is half+ most of the time. HD video and 8mp pics will fill up your storage fast. Love it or hate it, the Rezound can replace my laptop 95% of the time. That's freedom baby!
I guess if you only use your phone to call, text, web searches or simply to show off to your friends then this is the perfect phone for you but if your phone is a business necessity rather than a show pony then you will agree that the numbers just don't add up. I thought it odd that Verizon promotes their phones with adds about streaming movies over the 4G LTE network and at the same time eliminating the unlimited plan. Do they really think people will spend $10 in data charges to watch a movie? We would switch to another network tomorrow but only Verizon has the coverage we need even though we have unlimited data grandfathered in on most of our phones.
I want a 1080p phone just as bad as everyone else but this defies all COMMON SENSE!!!
Maybe I'm only one person but I will only reward a business with my cash for giving me what I want and need.
Just say NO...

I can see them (or another carrier) within a few years having a 4G LTE home plan that's unlimited for all of your devices. Then you just put your phones on and some mifi hotspot devices in your home. Verizon has already mentioned that they want to move away from FIOS to something wireless because of the expense of setting up and maintaining the cords. This is all I'd need since I never use cable anyways, and within a few years I'd bet almost all channels have their own internet live streaming and/or watching shows when you want. Were already getting there.
Not sure but I heard it's VZW's fault because they force HTC to have low mem with no sd which means using clouds which means using data and some don't have unlimited which means more money for VZW.
Also they do sell usb to micro usb cords to plug your usb into your phone as an external harddrive I guess and store games on there. Just plug it in when you want to play a game I guess. The thing is don't know if DNA supports this. I know GSIII does as well Note II I think.
gSorry for opening a new thread and spammimg guys but i need your help...I own n Xperia Mini (st15i) and i want to sell that and buy Xperia U (st25i)....is this change worth? Shall i go for this phone or better wait? In addition, if someone could mention problems of Xperia U that has seen/heared/experienced , would be really appreciated.
Thanks.
If memory problem doesn't affect your need than no doubt you should go for it otherwise wise Xperia j or if you want to add more money than sola

It's a great phone, only paid £130 sim-free for mine in the UK; but the memory is small (512Mb). I just upgraded to ICS and rooted, and despite spending a couple of days fiddling around to reduce ram-hungry apps and processes, the dialer will occasionally crash when I try and use it, due to lack of available RAM. I am going to have to strip down even more apps and widgets to make it reliable. On Gingerbread I had the same number of apps and widgets and there were less problems. So if you are going to hang on to your next phone for a while, I would suggest waiting for a phone with 1Gb+ of memory.
I dont have any but any problems from day one,no.crashes.and wifi tetherimg always.worked, using my country costomized rom heres after 24 h phone usage ram,no killing or whatever.

I think its better for u to limit running apps in the developers setting.
Should work fine

there are specific set of people which would be even more than happy with Xperia U. these are the normal, general, non-power users upgrading from a dumbphone, or even smartphone owners before 2011.
from their old unit, they can now experience android and the apps it offers. with even better than usable single cores out there, they even get dual core CPU power, to browse the net, take and view pictures, internet messaging via whatsapp/imo, skype video calls, socialize in facebook/twitter, watch youtube, email, create short notes on notes applications, and many other useful tasks... all rendered in a bravia screen with high density of pixels which is very sharp and beautiful. the transparent color changing bar is another attractive feature which sets it apart from other phones which generally, all look alike.
the only thing not possible here would be the things that require storage, like local movie watching and to some extent music collection playing.
any other else, its as good as whatever phones out there.
with the expertise of the devs here in xda, who knows what more it can do.
thanks darth5zaft, I've tried that before but then gave it another shot after reading your post - but I still get lags and freezes when I have an app open and a call, or an sms comes through, everything slows down. So I've gone back now to using Auto Memory Manager off the Play Store, which might be doing the same sort of thing but I haven't had any slow-downs or lags over the last 24 hours, everything is zippy and I can't see the battery draining any faster
I agree, this phone does most of what a more expensive phone would do - I originally bought it just to replace the Nexus S I had which crapped out, with the plan being to upgrade at the end of that two year contract next March, but I will probably keep it a bit longer now that its set up nicely, there's little else I'm missing really.
Go for xperia u
U will luv it
Nice looks
Dual core
Plays hd games smoothly
Decent battery ( after. 54 fw )
And superb pricing
And regarding lagging
Almost all phones on stock fw lags
Even my father's galaxy note lags sometimes
So if u want to buy a decent budget android smartphone wid power bt limited space go for xperia u

I was a bit worried, coming from a Nexus 5, that this phone would be laggy and that I wouldn't be satisfied with the screen resolution. Also about getting JUST a 16 GB phone in late 2014 when 32 GB should be the minimum standard.
I slapped a 64gb SD card in - it worked perfectly. Although I almost have it filled and just ordered a 128 GB card.
I actually use a LOT of apps as I have very diverse interests. After loading the apps I use weekly if not daily, I have about 2.5 GB left on internal storage - bottom line is that this phone meets my app needs.
The screen is absolutely beautiful. I have no problems with it - in fact it is fine and I like it.
There is NO lag on anything I have thrown at it.
Battery. Goodness! THERE IS NOTHING ELSE OUT THERE THAT WILL GET THIS TYPE OF USAGE ON A BATTERY CHARGE. I was injured and had to lay up on the couch and I got 3 days of use on a single charge. 3 days! AND still had 23% battery left! And this was heavy usage browsing, email, movies, read a book, etc. Coming from a Nexus 5 when you had to recharge every time you used it, this is a breath of fresh air and makes the phone well worth what I paid for it. Simply amazing! And I had gps, wi-fi, bluetooth all turned on the whole time and good screen brightness.
I also set it up as a wi-fi phone and data phone with Google Hangups and Dialer - works well.
To sum it up, don't hesitate to get this phone if you want a stable, large really nice screen, longest lasting battery, GREAT user experience phone.
edit: Just found out that this phone is no longer supported by the manufacturer. With this in mind my suggestion is, even though it could have been an awesome device, with no support it is a dead end. I think they just kicked themselves out of the USA market.
I too felt the same way about my mate 2 when i got it three weeks ago. Perfect in so many ways, flaunting it to everybody. But now this.
I agree, for a new owner of this device the news that it won't receive upgrades is total rage bait.
On the other hand, what exactly are we missing out on by not getting kit Kat? With a device lasting me an average two years (OK months, who am I kidding?) How drastically will android change from jelly bean in that time? Should I just toss the phone out now? Is that what owners of other admittedly higher specced and priced devices did when their supposedly more reliable manufacturer announced an upgrade dead end (or said nothing at all). Pretty much every phone manufacturer is guilty of this, and we haven't seen the end of it.
I'm going to use the living s#!+ out of this phone, squeeze every last drop of utility out of it. But when I'm done with it I will not be going back to huawei. Nope, nope, nope. Never again.
Is there any other option?
I just ordered an ascend mate. 2. It just arrived and haven't even opened it... Now, obviously I am pissed that there will be no software update, but I still don't see any other option for 299 dollars! Do you think I should return it? Do you advise a different device?

I returned mine.
It depends what you are using it for. As a phone and apps device it is awesome. But if you want to do the things the newer operating system brings - like Google Wear devices, return it. IMO it is atrocious that a manufacturer would abandon a same year device and I spoke my dissatisfaction by returning it.
I agree that it is shameful that huawei would abandon a same year device... But can you think of any other device for that price? I can return it but for what other phone? And plus, assuming I root the phone and put the cm10.1 on it, what is the difference if they offer a software update?

I've done some research and I'm thinking if you are looking for a phone with the same specs and screen size or slightly better at the same price pretty much your only option is buying something like the HTC one max from Swappa. It's well supported by both by updates and 3rd party development. It will get Lollipop in March according to HTC.
I'm holding out for a Nexus 6.
