[Q] IMAP / POP3 mail issues with Eris on MetroPCS? - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys, I'm stumped on this issue and could use your help.
I have a rooted Eris on MetroPCS and it's all working with the exception of Email. I've tried the default email program as well as K-9 with the same results while trying to add an IMAP or POP3 account. I either receive a message that the incoming server can not be reached or my outgoing smtp server returned "null" (this of course is not an issue when on WiFi).
I've tried all that I know to do, clean wipes of the phone, new ROMs, different u2nl/autoloader files (v3 and v3.5) to no avail.
Anyone else have this issue? How can I resolve it?
Thanks for your time!
----------- Details -----------------
What Works:
• Web
• MMS
• Gmail
• Text
• Phone
• Maps
What doesn’t:
• Email – regular POP/IMAP accounts don’t work unless I’m on WiFi
• Downloading from the market – can only do so when on WiFi due to Meto's network here in SoCal (no SSL over 1X network)
• 3G – N/A here in SoCal
I’ve tried the following ROMs
• xtrSENSE 4.2.1
• KaosFroyo 35-1
• Eris Official 21

Im in the same boat any help out there would be nice.

Update....
So upon rebooting the phone K-9 CAN upload/download POP mail, for approximately 30 seconds. After that it can no longer download or send mail.
This failure to send/receive happens directly after my autostart alert pops up to tell me that autostart.sh had been granted SU permission... I thought that the autostart.sh script changed the routing tables to so I could reach the super-web, not prevent my access to email servers... anyone run into this?
Thanks!

Maybe it's something on Metro? Maybe they have a firewall or some kind of traffic filtering?

NEED HELP sending emails through WIFI on my MDA

For some reason I can do everything through Wifi except send emails. I can successfully receive my emails, view them, download attachments, browse with internet explorer, and chat on all messenger programs! I have spoken to upper tier level support people at T-mobile and they confirmed my outgoing settings are correct. I use yahooo small business email server and outgoing is set to: smtp.bizmail.yahoo.com. Can anyone help me with this problem?
This is the error message I get: "messages cannot be downloaded to your mobile device. Make sure you are connected and that your e-mail account settings are correct. Then try to download messages again".
timing
Is this a problem that you have just encoutnered or a longer running one. I find that I sometimes get this message if my PC is off (killing the wifi network) or if my internet provider webmail server is down. It may ahve been a glitch that will sort itlsef.
Don't bother phoning and paying fpr Tmobile support - trust me - they don't know anything about the phone you have - stick with the forum!
Hi, I've had this problem from day 1, never been able to send emails
try this
you could try instead of outgoingserver smtp.bizmail
just type in this text smtp.mail.yahoo.com
and furthermore leave the boxes requires ssl connection and outgoing mail requires authentication OPEN.
hope this works for you as it works for me.
Thanks for the suggestion... Tried it, but still no success. Anybody else?
outlook
DO you use outlook elsewhere for this/these accounts and have you double checked that the settings are identical?
Can you send via GPRS?

2 outgoing mail servers ??

I have a 200MB Mobistar Mail&Surf contract (Belgium).
I use the following settings:
incoming mail server: in.telenet.be
outgoing mail server: smtp.mobistar.be
It works fine for gprs but when I am at home using my wifi and want to sent an email, I have to use the SMTP-server uit.telenet.be from my internet provider (telenet).
Does anyone know how to set up a second outgoing mail server ?
I know with the iPhone it's possible to add a second outgoing mail server..
You have to select the email account. Scroll down and select "SMTP". Then you see "Other SMTP Server". Select "Add Server". Then for the second Outgoing Mail Server you have to enter the Host Name.
If it's possible with iPhone... it must also be possible with my HD2
Or am I wrong
Any ideas?
I don't think that you can.
Unfortunately Windows Mobile seems to lack some pretty fundamental features when it comes to email including multiple SMTP servers and IMAP Idle.
One solution is to always use your GPRS/3G connection to send and receive email. Try changing the Network Connection from "The Internet" to the name of your Mobistar connection.
Look under the Advanced Server Settings where you set the outgoing mail server for that account.
EDIT:
I should also add that if you can use your home ISP's outgoing mail server from anywhere you could leave the Internet connection as it is and set-up your phone to authenticate when sending mail and then just leave the outgoing mail settings set up for your home ISP all the time.

Yes, you're wrong. That's like saying that a badger should be able to do anything a mole can do. Hey - they're similar!
Same problem here
I have exactly this issue (but no badgers trying to be moles).
Vodafone only allow their smtp and my broadband provider only allows their smtp.
I am trying to see if my broadband company can set-up an exception to allow VF smtp through. Know some can do this.
Any othere ideas appreciated

As far as I know even Microsoft Outlook doesn't support multiple outgoing SMTP servers.
Would you be so bold as to say that Microsoft Outlook "lack some pretty fundamental features when it comes to email [sic]"?
Can you change the outgoing port to 587? If so you may find your ISP hasn't blocked this port and your hosting has opened it too.
You may also use another outgoing server with authentication turned on,. you just need the username or password. Saying that some ISPs have a relay server like O2 for third party email accounts and it looks like this "relay.o2broadband.co.uk" and that doesnt require authentication.

having had the same problem the solution i found was to simply create an additional (NEW) account whch i named [email protected] in which i specified the smtp server i use at home.
if you connect via gprs you can send via one account. if you connect via wlan you can send mail usind the other account.

Perhaps it hasn't occurred to you that we tend to use mobile phones in a different way from which we use desktop computers or even laptop computers.
For many, many smartphone owners, mobiles are with them all the time and often switch from 3G networks to Wi-Fi networks at home or at work.
Oh and if you use Outlook you will find that when you are going to send your email you can choose which account to send from giving you the option of setting up an account with a different SMTP server for sending if you want.
You could always buy a domain name with email hosting for not very much per year, they allow access to smtp servers from any network, and you get the benefit of lots of email addresses and such, decent anti virus and spam settings, etc, pretty cheap nowadays.
''2 outgoing mail servers" - im fairly sure only the iphone (and maybe specialist mail software) can do this, certainly nothing ive seen can have multiple smtp servers set.

I don't think the problem with this is so much the SMTP servers themselves not allowing access -- although, assuming the SMTP servers are properly-configured, that could be a problem as well -- but rather ISPs blocking port 25 outbound off of their network...kind of a mis-guided measure on their part, but most ISPs are doing it nowadays...so...
If you're going to buy mail hosting, you should really be buying hosted Exchange for your domain name. I've seen Exchange hosting solutions for as little as $12/mo. Then you can access your e-mail with Exchange Server ActiveSync, giving you push e-mail on your phone (rather than the crap polling paradigm that POP3 uses), in addition to allowing MAPI access on the desktop, and allowing you to use the beautiful OWA for checking your e-mail at random computers.
Hi!
In theory, I guess someone could use Mortscript to create an application that would reconfigure the SMTP servers and switch them whenever the application is called.
SUCCESS - Problem resolved!
I have investigated further and have a SOLUTION!!
My very helpful broadband supplier said that they do not block ports for other parties smtp, yet I thought mine was being blocked by them.
Incorrect - it was the mailbox supplier not accepting my request.
My web hosting company provides us with 2 levels of mailbox - standard and advanced. With advanced they offer "Roaming SMTP" which enables you to send mail using no matter what provider of interner access. They say that many providers limit you to the ISP's outgoing mail server to send email.
By using an advanced mailbox (with Roaming SMTP) and importantly using OUTGOING AUTHENTICATION, my mail goes over Wi-Fi and VF 3G!!!
SUCCESS!
I think the important thing is to try authentication with your standard mailbox supplier details. I was advised that if this does not work, the ISP/VF may be able to supply smtp user name and password for authentication through their network.
Hope that helps.
Second outgoing smtp server in Win Mb 6.5.2
I have been an O2 XDA customer in UK for 10 years but I'm a complete beginner on this xda-developers site. I can say that both MW v6.0 & v6.11allowed more than one e-mail account for a single e-mail address, just as in Outlook. But I never got the i-phone I had to do this and I sent it back. In WM 6.5 on HTC HD2 when setting up an e-mail account you can only use an incoming e-address once. This is a major defect when using Wi-Fi because ISPs are trying to stop spam by barring relay. So I do need multiple accounts set up from which to select. I am a bit daunted by the list of 60+ known ROM versions of Win Mb 6.5 listed here and don't know which solves which problems
So if anyone can tell me what to do or direct me to a ROM version here that overcomes this problem I will be very pleased. JHH

No I am sure that Outlook does allow more than one e-mail account for the same e-mail address. I have two for my O2 mail account. One has O2 servers set for both incoming and out going mail. The other has O2 in and smtp.orangehome.co.uk for sending over Wi-Fi where I have no O2 phone signal at Home. the problem is that this is possible on the earlier WM 6.0 & 6.11 phones not not in the implementation of WM 6.5.2 on the HD 2. any other ideas?

incorrect, you can set up multiple accounts using the same incoming email address, , you just have to NOT put the correct address at the start of the process, else the wizard jumps in and says it already exists.
In the same way that if you put a hotmail address it leaps in and takes over configuring the account.
Set the initial address to something wrong, [email protected] for instance, , configure all the rest of the settings, save it, then go back and edit the incoming address after.
I have two accounts that share incoming details but have different outgoing details.(One for wifi one for mobile)
Second outgoing smtp server in Win Mb 6.5.2
That is a most helpful solution to my problem. Thank you that kind person.
I do not think anyone in O2 or HTC knows this answer. I was in despair. Since a historical spat with O2 Orange Home blocks the URL of any message coming onto their severs from O2. They report at the time that 'Relay not allowed use SMTP AUTH' but that is not the reason why the outgoing e-mail on an O2 address fails. Needless to say O2 servers do not block Orange Home traffic.

Email not sending (Fixed)

So I have a bell atrix and I have tried to put my Shaw email on it and i'm 100% sure all the settings are correct yet I can not send emails. I can receive them fine. But when I go to send it says authentication error sending.
Settings are as followed:
Incoming is: pop.shaw.ca and the corresponding port.
Outgoing is: mail.1xbell.ca and the corresponding port with neither box checked.
I spent an hour at bell with a lady who was on the phone with tech support and they couldn't fix it.
PS: THIS HAS BEEN FIXED. LEFT THE USERNAME AND PW BLANK
Still need help
Bumping this.
E-mail
To help we need more information.
Please post your current e-mail settings (no passwords)
Hope this helps
MTWIZARD
Im using shaws pop settings for incoming which work. And bells outgoing which doesn't work.
Outgoing is mail.1xbell.ca
Port 25
neither box checked
Are you connected to Wi-Fi? I believe that if you're using Wi-Fi the bell settings won't work, because you should be using your ISP outgoing credentials.
What outgoing credentials did you try with Shaw?

I tried all the shaw outgoing as well. I have wifi turned off and haven't used it once
I updated the OP.
I've heard of a few people having problems with sending shaw email if they're using a TELUS or Bell device, basically a non-shaw mobile device.
technically, mail.1xbell.ca should work, but you'll have to make sure you don't have the authentication option on the outgoing mail server turned on. (ie. don't use a user/name password).
What outgoing did you use for shaw shawmail.cg.shawcable.net ?
Shaw does not have a dedicated outgoing server. Have you tried setting outgoing server as smtphm.sympatico.ca ? Try and report back.
Please not by using the bell outgoing mail settings u will not be able to send email while connected to wifi. If u use Shaw in and out setting then while connected to wifi which uses shaw as the isp it will work then.
*edit
Port 587 if 25 doesn't work and try with and without authentication.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I tried that server and it didn't work either.
I tried it without my username and pw and I tried it with as well.
To no avail.
Bell and shaw email
Called Bell known issue they are working with Motorola for a fix, I am pissed to as my Milestone and Samsung Galaxy i9000m all worked fine, so I see it as Motorola has altered the Adroid mail app for their liking and screwed it up.
third party apps work fine
I downloaded K9 and it works fine with the Atrix and Shaw, so until Motorola fixes the stock Android app, guess I have to use K9

Are you using shaws outgoing or bells?
Shaw does not support an outgoing, you have to use mail.1xbell.ca and it won't work I called Bell and there are aware of the problem. But K9 does work fine for sending, the stock app works for receiving just not sending.
This is a necro bump. I was wondering if anyone here got it working?
removing outgoing mail server user name and password worked for me. Need Bell tech support to remove from sympatico account as Bell uses a template to set up an account.
morp2
new Atrix, Bell upgrade to 2.2.2
Atrix vs Shaw - fixed
Woo Hoo!! I finally have my Atrix/Shaw thing figured out.
First I had to enable Mobile Access:
shaw.ca - Accessing Shaw email from your Android
1. Go to the "Webmail Beta site" and sign in with your Shaw email and password.
2. Select Preferences then the Mobile Access tab.
3. Select Enabled, enter your existing Shaw password and click Save. If your password does not meet the security requirements, you must change it before Mobile Access can be enabled.
Step three was what was killing me....
After that the Set-up was;
Incoming:
- pop.shaw.ca
- 110
- full email address
- password
-- Left both checks un-checked
Outgoing:
- mail.shaw.ca
- 587
- full email address
- password
-- Left both checks un-checked

Errors connecting to corp exchange server

Hi Guys,
I am connected to the corp Exchange server and most of the times, email works fine. However, there are many times email does not update. And if I try to manually refresh, I get one of the following errors.
- Unable to connect to server
- Unable to open connection to server due to security error
I know my settings are correct and there is no problems with the company Exchange enviornment. Any suggestions?
Thanks
if your settings are fine and no corp network issue, then there's only a couple more options left as the cause. The way I see it, its gotta be either:
1) AT&T network
2) corporate network
3) problem with the phone / incorrect settings
are you stock?
Hi
Good points.I am on serendipity 8. It's strange that it works great at times but then nothing. For example I am up in pa this weekend
And no corp email since last night. I can't even send. But gmail and internet is working fine.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
I suppose the obvious of a password expiration or similar? I use both CM7 (Captivate) and Unnamed (Galaxy S2) with two different exchange accounts, plus I use corporate Address book with one, and everything works great. I know that's not terribly helpful, but for what it is worth. Maybe try the corporate address book, see if that works -- might at least validate the overall path and credentials (though you do need to re-enter the credentials).

push email does not work

Same issue with my Razr.
I have 3 email accounts: 2 corporate (exchange 2003 and exchange 2010 servers) and 1 IMAP.
I can set up any option (Data push and Fetch schedule for non-push accounts) in email settings for 'Email delivery'. No matter what, after some time all the options are back to defaults: 'Fetch schedule: 15 minutes" and 'Data push: none'.
For instance: One of the accounts is push enabled so I mark it checked at 'Data push'. It works for some time (not really sure how long) but then the account appears back in 'Fetch schedule' list.
Also if I select 'Every hour' in 'Fetch schedule' this option remains selected for some time but let's say next day it is reset back to 'Every 15 minutes'.
the issue is also that in spite the accouts should synch (every 15 minutes) they don't - I have to do it manually.
I thought the OTA update would resolve the issue but it has not (I am now 651.73.30).
I am going to remove all the smart actions to see if this solves the issue.
did disabling smart actions work for you? i'm having the same issue with 2 imap idle accounts and a corporate email account.
push works for some time but after e.g. 30 minutes there are no messages pushed. asap I open messaging app, all accounts are refreshing and emails arrive.
all accounts are set up for push, wifi sync unchecked, background data activated, mobile data is enabled, datasaver unchecked.
I have had this problem with the default mail client on every android phone that I have used. I believe it might be an android problem rather than a specific RAZR issue.
I switched to K-9 mail a while ago. Haven't had a problem since.
Guys! Just install MailDroid! It's really good app. I'm using it on my third phone ... about 2 years. It's much much better then k-9 mail. Greetz!
I have the same problem with my Yahoo mail, It just happens recently I do not get any email notifications anymore I have to manually sync my mail to get the new email. I did not do any changes to my phone same settings like OP
Same problem here too. I've got two corporate email accounts, both on Exchange 2010 and both working fine on other android devices. Only on my Razr does push email revert to fetch after half an hour or so?
I have the same problem with background data getting disabled randomly.
I tried removing all smart actions which didn't seem to help so just did a factory reset. Fingers crossed!
Hi,
Disabling Smart Actions made no difference. I have also played with background data but it didn't help.
But I have discovered something new, I believe:
I travel abroad regularly – weekends I am in home network and weekdays roaming usually. I have switched off GSM data roaming so that I don’t use any GSM data connections while roaming – I have access to WiFi usually so I actually don’t need GSM data.
BUT: When I am at home all synchronisation works fine regardless if via GSM or WiFi. When I roam (so GSM data is off) and connect to WiFi no automatic e-mail synchronisation happens. And I mean not only push but also the scheduled synchronisation does not really work – I have to synch manually. Weather and any other synchronisation works fine.
My conclusion would be then: Moto’s e-mail client is crap and I will give a try to some other e-mail clients based on recommendations above. I am quite sure this issue is not Android generic because my previous device was HTC Desire and it worked fine in exactly same environment. I have played with my wife's new HTC Sensation too - also positive.
By now - in my Razr, I have actually replaced most of stock applications with others available from Market (no root) - most are from the "GO *" series. I might have not liked the HTC applications but they did function properly for me. Moto disappointed me...
Greetings!
k
PS So check your mobile data parameters...
I have no suggestion but I have the same problem...-the push of my emails (imap accounts) is working just a short moment after the manual resync and after that I get no pushed emails.....
