Please I need fix for "no firmware" message - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, i read that there is a new official update from samsung called JI6, when i tried to check for updates on my mobile i got message "no firmware" and the massage pops up quickly i don't think that the mobile connects to any servers to check for updates, i read that this problem because the phones got played with, i and my phone is:
1 - unlocked.
2 - rooted.
3 - lagfixed.
4 - gps fixed by the easy solution.
5 - gps fixed by the hard solution, by using .zip file and loaded into the rom (it wasn't that hard).
6 - changed the camera to smasung captive's camera, by also using .zip and loaded it into the rom.
so please i need to know which one of these adjustments should i remove to get the update not the "no firmware" msg, and thank you.

Is a random update you'll get a message you can be rooted but you need to be in stock kernel in order to get the message

Gps has to be reset to dead stock to get the update.

Also, the no firmware message is pretty standard.

Did you actually read the post or edit? He changed out the file for the OTA version, so yes, it is the final OTA tar.

No I have read it recently . Only when the " Leaked " version was posted .

There is no fix, because there is no problem! The OTA updates are sent to devices in stages. You will receive a notification (in the notification bar at the top) when the update is pushed to your device. Going to "Settings > Software Update" only allows you to update the firmware after the notification has already been pushed to your device. If you haven't received the notification yet, then of course the Software Update is going to say "No Firmware".
Why can't people read the existing posts, search for their questions first, and only if they have something new and unique to post should they create a new topic. Furthermore, what does this have to do with development?

Would you give an update if u are using a different carrier on an unlocked phone ?
Because I put it in stock to see and sure I got message saying NO FIRMWARE

Everyone has the same thing as you, you are just impatient. You will get an update that shows up in your dropdown when the update has been pushed to you. Otherwise, you can follow my instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803492

If u open up a task manager then go to the device management and chose switch to it gives you a option to do software update no luck for me tho, but it does search for something

Why are people still waiting for the update when you could just download it and install via odin in like 5 minutes .

i'm also waiting for the ota. I'm not flashing through Odin because i got one of those "hardware locked" phone. Don't want to take a chance of messing something up in odin or having odin hang on me. I'm sure there a others in the same boat. I already asked for two replacements and no go. Will be working on getting a third one and see what happens.

First make sure your phone is not hardware lock by shutting down your phone and try to boot to recovery . (with phone powered down) Do this by holding volume up and down + power , hold untill vibrant screen pops up twice then let go of power button . If it boots to recovery you are safe to use odin .
Now you can download the official JI6 update from the bible in the development section . You will also need the vibrant drivers . And last thing you'll need is odin .
Once you have all those and you've installed the drivers, run odin and load the JI6 tar file in the PDA section of odin . Now turn off your phone remove your sim and sd card . Now put it in download mode by holding volume up + down and plugging the usb cable into your phone . If the android with the shovel screen pops up you are in download mode . Wait for yellow com 4 to show in odin then click start . Let odin run and do its thing . The phone should reboot twice and you are now running the new update with all data still intact .
There are many guides on how to use odin make sure you understand what you are doing and are confident . Otherwise do not attempt this .

Trying to get back to stock!! please help.

So I'm sure I'm going to get flamed ,or told to go read, or have grammar made fun of. But at this point I I'm lost. I have attempted to download every file and try every method listed to get my phone back to stock, nothing is working.
ROM: Team objection UCLE 2 #2 RC1
Baseband: 1717UCLF5
Carrier: at&t
Up until now I have never had too ask for help reading was always enough to get all the info I needed but not this time.
Ok so, work kies it will never connect to the service the phone that is, all drivers up to date. PC can see it just fine.
Have tried to use the different unrooted methods in the super everything thread such as the Odin flash and ask the others listed. Can some one please help me before I really mess up my phone?

See the file right after #11 that is what I used.. Wondering if you are in download mode when in Odin.. There are different ways.. This is only what I did.. I hope this helps you
Will this get me back to being able to connect to Kies so I can do the upgrade? I know this one said unroot but I was unsure if i need to get back to a stock ROM as well. I kow I read some where able to unroot thought kies, but all I was ever able to get was a connection error.
Yes , I was in DL mode in Odin as well, but hey sometime we have to ask the obvious questions like. " Is the device plugged in to the outlet"
You don't need to go back to stock to get the ics upgrade!
Go to the samsung page where you upgrade (this link was sent out by at&t in a tezt message), scroll down near the bottom and do the emergency firmare install.
It will wipe your phone clean but will leave your sd card alone.

Make sure you have the samsung usb/charging cable.
This emergency option is under "tools".
I'm on Telus, rooted and running a ics rom, would this kies method work for me or is it only for AT&T users?
would I have to wait until my carrier releases the update?
Thanks!

I just got the AT&T text message about the ICS update. And it's the same link I've seen before taking you to the Samsung web site and instructing you how to use the Kies software to update.

I saw nothing on the Samsung page that instructs on how to do the emergency firmware install.
First download Kies and install it with your phone unplugged from the computer. make sure Kies does all its updates. while its updating remove your battery and write down your S/N as well as the model of the phone cause youll need it, go ahead and remove ur SD card to be safe. Once its fully updated put your phone into DOWNLOAD MODE, then connect it to the computer. in Kies goto Firmware Upgrade and Initialization in the Tools Menu. This will wipe everything from your phone so backup any pictures/music/movies whatever. your going to accept the new firmware install and be asked for your S/N of the phone and the phones model number. depending on your internet speed should take about 15 mins or less to do the upgrade to ICS

Just make sure you read tons before flashing
It should be pretty simple after you have an idea of what's going on.
Read the stickies they will help
And flashing the Official ICS thru Odin/Kies shouldnt brick or harm your phone at all

It does not matter if your phone is rooted or not. Start up Samsung Kies. Connect your phone. Go to the Tools tab. Select "Firmware upgrade and Initialization". Fill in the info and you should force the update. Model is SGHI717. No hyphen. And use caps for model and SN.

Its not that hard just a couple files you have to download and you'll be set..
Google Odin for ATT Note and
Download this .zip file found here
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/162779447/3bb6230/I717UCLF6_I717ATTLF6_ATT.zip.html
(its stock official ICS ) extract the .zip and put the .tar file inside in the PDA slot
And hit start
Make sure you put your phone in download mode first
(Holding volume down and power when powering up)
You should be set
I think there is a video on the stickies on how to do it as well if you get lost or confused

Model is sierra golf hotel india seven one seven. All caps and no spaces. Kies probably didn't recognize the model.
FYI I guess there are different model numbers, or at least different ways the model number must be entered. My model # is SGH-I717...and when updating this way via Kies, I had to enter the dash. It wouldn't take it without the dash. Also, I've seen others report the model # they used was ATTI717.

and that you might have fixed it already but...
The quickest fix for me was to install ATT's original Baseband back its official I717UCLA1. Your note might have a different/custom one installed. I ran into the same exact issue today on my girlfriends Note (forgot I had a tmobile radio loaded for her). I would assume that CWM is loaded on the device also. If thats the case, search XDA for ATTNOTEUCLARADIO.zip (approx 22.1mb file) and copy to sd or internal storage on device. Boot into recovery via vol up + vol down + power. choose install via .zip. point to file and run. once completed, reboot.
now connect note to computer and run Kies. It will now tell you update is available.
Hope this helps anyone else who stumbles across this post via google search. I had to re-download files as we weren't home when I had did this where I have the files backup to to storage drive. Its safe and fast.
(Update) This will remove root access, remove CWM recovery and install ATT's bloatware crap. The cool factor: It DOES keep all your data and apps untouched except Superuser, which it removes

Put it in download mode. Start kies and once it shows your phone as connected click emergency firmware upgrade have your s/n ready make sure you have 3 gigs of space on your pc and a internet connection. It will.restore to official ics for the i717. WARNING........ THIS WILL ERASE YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE BEFORE HAND. Stock ics sucks if i was you id root and install a custom ics. Example i am using the new blackstar Rom. Its the best Rom for ics in my eyes..goodluck.

I just exchanged my phone with AT&t today. Before doing so, I brought it completely back to stock from CM9.
Odin'd stock GB rom.
Odin'd stock radio (1).
Odin'd CWM.
Flashed flash counter reset via CWM.
After doing that, Kies let the phone update to official ICS. But only after doing all of that. At some point in there might be your problem.
Once I got the new phone home, I IMMEDIATELY rooted and restored to my CM9 backup. Stock anything is blegh.

Solved
I was also getting the message 'SGH-I717' does not allow initializing.
Going throught the post, I Booted the device with Vol-Up + Vol Dwn + Power (I kept the USB cable connected) and when the Samsung Logo first appeared released all the keys.
Once in the menu I selected last option click on Ok (the second touch button) then selected first option to reboot.
The phone booted normally and connect to Kies it asked for update. The update is downloading right now.

Pretty sure I have ruined my phone.

Got the Galaxy S3 on the 3 network in the UK, all was fine & dandy then found out about how the phone was updated & basically 3 sit twiddling their thumbs on it. Went looking for a solution, found a nice simple flash the phone with Odin, use proper Samsung firmware, thought that will do the trick for me.
Unfortunately I did exactly as I was told (didn't go down the root, well, route as there were too many options and I was lost as to wether I was using the right stuff) People swore by the flash to samsung firmware, did that last night, was perfect. Only thing left was the change csc thing, to select BTU but the option wasnt there...was told to download another firmware.......the phone returned with a "unfortunately, the process android.acore has stopped" message, was told to to a reset.......then got "unfortunately, messaging has stopped". Have flashed a few times now to no avail, I can no longer text, is my phone basically broken beyond repair?
Not ruined, but it sounds like you have clobbered some system files. Read up on rooting. Hopefully you can Root and then install a custom recovery like CWM then install a custom ROM.
It would have been better to have made a backup via recovery before you started flashing stuff.
Flash stock ROM and start again

Or even factory reset .
But its a bad flash probably could be a corrupt download or wrong firmware .

I've flashed past phones to death and even still following instructions exactly, they don't always work as they should. Yeah they have cool features and yeah me or you can probably manage to fix any issues they throw up, but they are definitely not for everyone.

Bull****...his problems have nothing to do with a brick. Don't scare him.
i'd defo try a factory, cache and dalvik reset first before flashing again, you'l loose all your data but it may fix the problems you are experiencing.. Boot into recovery mode to do that.
Thanks for all the replies. I have flashed with Odin 3.04 & have found out 3.07 is out...could this be where it all went wrong? I tried following the rooting stuff but found so many variations & in my head (technology challenged when it comes to this) it was all going over my head. I did do the factory reset & reflash with a stock software (the latest I believe) but I don't know if it is a network thing which knackerec me, in CSC I have sales code saying H3G with no options to select BTU. If I post a screenshot of my settings (about device) would that help someone steer me in the right direction as a possible starting point.
My phone appears to be no longer 3 branded, but it should be locked to the 3 network in the uk.
I had the same issue with my Three branded phone. What i did was flash the rom with the PDA button ticked in Odin and then flashed it again with the same file but ticked the CSC icon instead of the PDA and it worked and then let me select BTU from the menu. Give it a try and report back, i'm 99% sure it'll work.
BTW you'll lose the HD voice by flashing it. I still havent found and easy way to get it back working.

The link for the stock you posted is what I used....didn't root as I said, but appeared to work perfectly. Then I lost access to kies & was told I needed to use csc to tick the BTU option & that would work, except I didnt & still don't have that option. Was given another link to apparently the same stock that had "multi csc options" & that when I got the Samsung acore error & I did a factory reset after about 30 minutes of trying to get into the options, then the messaging stopped working & I found out how to do te factory reset using te vol button home power thing. Is there a specific 3 firmware where I can get my phone branded again & take it from there?

I am happy flashing on release, please understand this is all new. If losing kies is not an issue coz I can just flash then cool. I thought kies was an essential part of the updating. I can use my phone fine just now (using go SMS Pro) but would like it back to fully working phone which would be sweet.
Nothing good is wrong with your phone. It's not even a brick yet. Flash a cwm recovery and then re trying using check rom.

None of these guys no what there talking about. You've bricked your phone and you won't be able to fix it. Best thing to do is cut your loss and sell it. I'll be generous and give you £50 pounds for it. That's right a fresh £50 note right now, hard cash delivered right to your door step, no questions asked!
Honestly though try flashing the original 3 firmware, it should be in the firmware thread I believe.
P.S You've not bricked your phone, no where near it so don't worry about it.

Thanks...I was giving up again to be honest as once again I was left not knowing what to do. I thought this would be the easiest place to ask but it was ending up in riddles, which is why I gave up on rooting it in the first place.

I'm on 3 UK same happened to me when I unbranded. Don't panic your phone is fine. Turn off phone then hold power + home + volume up. Let go when you see the Android man. Wipe factory reset and dalvik cache you will lose everything. Then reboot. Don't bother letting it boot back up, just hold power + home + volume down. Then flash unbranded rom via odin. Once done and booted type *#272*yourimei# and you should now have option of btu.

Is there anybody out there that can make me an ODIN tar of the Novena J2 rom? It's the only way I can flash the rom on my phone, and I am unable to do it... yet. I will gladly donate! :good:

Guy...you're in the wrong area.
I have never put together an odin package before...so I am no help there. However, if you are unable to get into recovery because of your broken volume up button...why not try this...

I think it's been suggested to you before. This will get you into recovery...all you need is root.

Why don't you give this a shot....
If you are willing to unroot and root again, here's what I've been doing to return to stock.
1 - Put phone in "Download Mode" - phone connected to PC
2 - Start Samsung Kies (make sure you have the latest.....)
3 - From Kies, click on tools then "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization"
4 - You will be prompted to enter ESN and model number (it is ok to pull the battery out to get ESN and Model - phone won't die with battery pulled at that point)
5 - And follow the prompts
The process does take some time. I have successfully done this many times with success.
Try it out to see if that might help you.
Good Luck!

Unauthorized Software error

Hey Everyone,
I woke up this morning to an Unauthorized Software message on my rooted Galaxy Note 2. I have been rooted for a long time now with no problems. I have not accepted any updates and have not made any recent changes to my device. I was using TWRP 2.6 and Jedi Rom when this message occurred. I tried flashing back to stock following the directions posted on the development forum but that doesn't seem to get the message to go away. I am not sure what else to do at this point to fix the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

You weren't unlocked when you flashed, that's why the message popped up. Go check out Droidstyles guide and if you can't get the message to go away using it try flashing one of the restore to stock roms with NAND erase checked.

I followed Droidstyles guide and it didn't work. I also tried what you suggested with NAND erase checked and it did not work either. At a loss. I know my bootloader was unlocked. Something happened while I was sleeping last night that started this message.
Anyone else have any ideas?

There is no way you got that message unless you were locked. Therefore, you tried flashing something while having a locked bootloader. I recommend looking at stickies. You'll find something
It might not be from a locked bootloader.
I know for a fact that there's something deep in the firmware that can do this.
When I was playing around with mine I hade it do this a few times. And I promise my bootloader is unlocked.
Infact right now I'm running on t mobile with cleanrom ACE and a custom kernel.
one of the things I know for sure that will give you that message is trying to run the wrong modem.
Check an be sure you didn't get a bad radio flash or something.
Still having trouble

How would I know if I have a bad radio flash? I cant even get into the phone fully before it errors out and I have to power it down. I have tried several times to follow the directions on the forum and flash it back to stock. However, this does not seem to be working. I am certain my bootloader was unlocked. I have had the phone rooted for well over 6 months. Like I said, I went to bed and when I woke up in the morning it was showing this error message. The only thing that I have updated was super user app. But it doesn't make sense that it would be causing this. Especially now that I have flash back to stock. I cant attempt to re-root the phone either because that requires me to be able to get into the phone and turn on debugging mode.
This happened to me on my s3. I had to use odin and the unbrick files.
where did you find those guides, I have the same problem, lol cant find those guides and for some reason odin 3 wont inst on my pc...

ok so after 4 hrs got it to work.
here go to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040264 down load alternate restore. Once it down loads the file extension ends with XZ, which Odin said was not a PDA file.
It has an odd file extension .xz (perhaps meant to be .gz) so I told 7zip to extract it. resulting file ended in .tar.md5. Put that file on odins PDA section. Boot up your phone with volume down, home and power button pressed to boot up in odin, once it boot up connect to pc and press the volume botton up to start odin download on the phone. the select start on odin soft ware on pc, should fix your phone.

I am not having problems getting the install to work. My problem is that the install isn't removing the unauthorized software message I am getting.

You are doing something wrong, either way this process is to revert your phone back to stock, from there you can root again. Theres no other way about it and is the only way I got my phone off that.
boot phone pressing vol key down, home and power.
connect to pc,
press vol key up
start odin
secondary file on pda
inst
phone back to stock.
If it doesnt work, I might have to see what you are doing via skype
secondary file ... http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390225151984927096 this one was the one that worked for me and many others.

I also did something with oding that caused a failed that made my phone go from that screen to update fail message, maybe we can try that rout and then do the restore as a last thing.
