I did the OTA update after doing a nandroid backup.
As luck would have it i'm stuck at the Vibrant Samsung logo.
I can get into System recovery (vol up + vol dwn + pwr) but can't find a way to restore my nandroid.
The phone is mostly stock with circular battery indicator and boot logo changed to galaxy stock (instead of tmobile) no custom roms or kernels.
Any help?

Reinstall packages. That should get you into clockwork recovery.
From clockwork you can find your backup and restore it.
Yeah, cw recovery is the key. Do you have it? I assume yes if you're trying to restore.
I'm having a heckuva time...
I've got the same problem, but am a little farther along.
I've tried restoring from my backup, and each time, it says:
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.4

Restoring system...
Restoring data...
(runs through a whole bunch of files)
Restoring datadata...
(runs through a whole bunch of files)
.android_secure.img not found. Skipping restore of /sdcard/.android_secure.

Restore complete!
And yet, it still hangs at the vibrant intro screen. I know some things have been restored, because my annoying startup sound is back.
You sure it's just not taking a long time at boot?
You cant restore to a JI2 rom or recovery from the JI6 update . If you have a JI6 nandroid recover to that .

you are quite right. I did use Clockwork Mod and Rom Manager to create the nandroid.
When I select reinstall packages I get the following:
Installing update...
Installation Aborted.
I suspect update.zip is not the right file (I don't know what I installed last but it wasn't CW recovery). Is there away to replace update.zip without booting into android?
I had the same problem. Your best bet is to ODIN and flash to the new JI6 through ODIN. Then go into clockwork recovery and do an "Advanced Restore" and only restore "data" that way you get your desktop config and apps restored, only thing missing would be root and any metamorph/update.zip's themes you've applied.
I have never done anything in Odin before. Can you point me to the best place to get started?

I wish I knew this a couple weeks ago. Would have saved me from using ODIN. Oh well, at least I know how to use it now.

Go to the bible under development section . You can find the JI6 tar and odin . You will also need the drivers for the phone .

This contains Odin, the Samsung Drivers, stock odin rom, updated odin rom, pit file.
If you don't want to lose your settings, etc. you can skip to the second part. If your phone still doesn't work than start from the top.
-PART 1-
Step 1.) Make sure you have the appropriate drivers installed for your phone. If you are on 64bit then choose 64, if you are on 32 choose 32. You may already have the drivers installed and it will tell you after you try to install them.
Step 2.) Power your phone off
Step 3.) Open Odin.exe and plug a usb cable to your computer that will connect to your phone (do not plug it in to the phone yet, just the computer)
Step 4.) Hold down both volume buttons at the same time and while holding them down plug the usb into your phone. You should see a COM message show up in Odin.
Step 5.) To ensure your phone is back to stock, in odin you will want to check the repartition button. ONLY CHECK IT WHEN YOU ARE FLASHING BACK TO STOCK. Leave the other check boxes the way they are.

OK, I'm going to go the odin route. But just for my enlightenment, Is there a way to put update.zip files on the internal SD card when you can't boot to android?
I'd also like to get a copy of my backups off the internal SD before I Odin over everything.

Just use the tar file in odin and all your data will still be there .

I was all set to go the ODIN route, but can't seem to get the drivers to recognize the phone; I've installed on two different machines (One 64 bit Windows 7, one 32 bit Windows XP) to no avail. ODIN doesn't notice when I plug it in as described above.
Any ideas??

Are you in download mode and did you run odin as administrator

i actually wiped my cache and reinstalled the package to get back into the device. then did a clockworkmod recovery.
you need to turn your phone on before plugging it in, otherwise the phone doesnt communicate over usb, it enters charging mode

try re flashing with oden switch will bring your phone back to stock, and then getting clock work and preform a nandroid before any further mods!

So, I decided to root my phone and put J16ROM Bionix 1.7 OCUV Voodoo J16. I back up my old ROM just in case. After successfully flashing the new rom, I was really happy with how fast my vibrant became w/o lag. However, I forgot to write down contact info and my password from password safe. So, I was kinda glad that I backed up old ROM. I tried to recover my old rom from ROM manager and thats where my phone gave up on me. It was recovering just fine until it hit data session. It has been there since yesterday and has not moved. I turned it off this morning and it automatically turned back on and went into recovery mode.
So, as of right now, I have access to phone recovery boot menu and clockwork recovery menu. I tried doing the same recovery method but it froze on me at the same exact spot. Did I mess up my phone???
Did you disable Voodoo before you tried to go back to stock?

i would say no, thankfully if you can get to recovery your phone is far from dead, but you should prob flash a stock rom through odin, READ Bionix fix for flashing without disabling voodoo, let me know if you need more info. but you should be alright, remember that your stuff (contacts, etc) are backed up to gmail.
You didn't disable Voodoo before trying to do the restore... did you.
This is the only way to save it now, good luck.
Did You Flash Something Before Disabling Voodoo? 2 Fixes to Help You Out. So you forgot to disable the voodoo lagfix before you flashed a new rom and now you're getting an erro you'll be good as rain...or something like that Fix 1 1. Download Eugenes 'Froyo that does not brick' file. 2. Extract the files. 3. Open Odin, plug in your phone, then put it into download mode. 4. load the PIT file in appropriate area. 5. load the .tar file in the PDA area. 6. DO NOT check 're-partition' 7. Click start, let it finish. Your phone will load and reboot into stock recovery. It will error out again. DO s what's supposed to happen 8. Now, pull your battery. 9. Download the 'True stock 2.1 firmware for the vibrant'. 10. Extract the files. 11. Once again, open Odin, plug in your phone, put into download mode. 12. Load the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area. 13. THIS TIME you want to check the 're-partition' box. 14. Now click start, let it finish, and this time your phone will load up just fine! BAM Fix 2: (use only if you know how to use adb commands) 1. Place the 'disable-lagfix' file in your sdk>tools directory 2. Get into clockwork recovery like you normally would 3. Follow these adb commands to push the 'disable-lagfix' file to you sdcard>voodoo adb push disable-lagfix /sdcard/voodoo 4. File should now be on your sdcard in your voodoo folder. 5. Reboot phone and with luck, you should hear Linda the robot telling you your file system is being con rfs 6. Because your system directory has already been wiped, you'll still get a black screen when you reboot system is back to rfs. Just pull the battery, and reflash whatever rom you want. Then reboot again.
Yea I did not disable Voodoo. I thought I would not need to do that since I am going back to original stock. Can you explain it to me how to get back to stock version and how to disable voodoo from recovery mode? Thanks!

Man.. I feel bad to keep asking questions. My computer won't recognize the phone even though my phone is in download mode.
disconnect usb, open Odin, load .pit and .tar, then reconnect usb, com should appear.
I mean Odin won't recognize my phone even though I was following the step
are you using odin 1.0 or 1.3? 1.0 i remember had issues recognizing the device, 1.3 works flawlessly. also, do you have the usb drivers installed? everything can be found in the Vibrant "Bible".

i had to install drivers to get odin 1.3 to recognize the phone, sounds like you need to do the same

yeah i noticed a few days ago that the links were dead, i have it in my downloads.......ok, uploading it now, will provide link when done.
Flash Eugene's Froyo that won't Brick... it will repartition your phone and get rid of everything, including bad kernels... then flash back down to JFD...
Or send your phone to me... $20 bucks since it's a brick...
Okay so I went from onyx 4.2 to a nandroid backup of bionix findal. Then since the backup was a 2.1 rom I flashed a 21 kernel then I rebooted and its stays at the vibrant screen and keeps going into recovery when I hit reinstal packages it takes me back to stock recovery not Cwm. So what do I do from here
Hit refresh packages again. Sometimes it takes more than one time.
Same thing happened to me, I ended up using odin....again. Thank god for odin

If you cannot get into CWM recovery, than most likely you will have to Odin. If you know how to use adb, then adb the CWM update.zip onto /sdcard and select re-install packages from the normal recovery. If you don't know how to use adb, then you can either learn or follow the directions in this post on how to use Odin. You might want to learn Odin anyways as it is extremely useful if you softbrick without access to recovery.
Here is a couple of methods to get into download mode. Once you get to download mode, follow the directions at the end of my post...
First Method
1) Pull the battery, sim card, and sd card.
2) Reinsert battery but do not press any buttons.
3) Plug into usb that is connected to your computer. If something shows up on the screen (charging logo) then you should be golden.
4) Hold the vol up, vol down, and power until the screen comes on, immediately release the power button but not the other two. Hopefully it will boot into download mode and than you can use Odin to get back to stock.
Second Method
1) Another method that seems to work for some people is to pull the battery, sim, sd card.
2) Reinsert battery and hold both volume buttons but do not press power button.
3) Then plug in usb. The phone should boot into download.
Third Method
1) You will need the samsung ADB drivers installed for your phone and ADB.

2) Remove sim card and sd-card. Remove the battery.
3) Hold buttons vol up, vol down, and power.
4) While holding down those 3 buttons put the battery back in and keep holding all 3 buttons until the vibrant disappears and reappears. Once it reappears, release all 3 buttons.
5) Now connect your phone to your pc via USB cable.
6) Open a cmd prompt and navigate to the folder with ADB and type "ADB REBOOT DOWNLOAD" caps are not necessary.
7) Your phone will reboot into the download
Download the files in the linked thread and follow the directions there or the ones in my post below.

1) Open Odin and verify that one of the Com ports shows a device connected. If it doesn't try using a different usb port.
2) Load the .pit and pda files. It should be pretty obvious how to do that once you are in Odin.
3) Make sure that the option to partition is unchecked. The other two options should be checked.
4) Hit start and wait.
5) Your phone will restart when Odin is done and you will be good to go.

Glad I could help you out. Just make sure you keep all the files on your computer in case you have to do it again. I had never had to use Odin until recently. Then I had to use it three times in one day.
My phone is stuck at the SAMSUNG boot screen part, it displayed the boot sound but that was it.

I've made relatively stupid mistake like you. (Not that we are stupid, but Newbie @ this whole phone stuff).
The best way to unbrick the bricked phone is by reinstalling the rom, which will wipe out the data on your phone (but better than having bricked phone eh?)
This step only applies if your phone is "ROOTED"

You need to download the odin file onto your computer, then get your phone in download mode and open up odin on your computer. Next use pda button to flash the modem file that you downloaded. Sorry, can't give you links as I am not at my computer.

Would doing a factory reset on the phone (via the button method) void any chance of flashing the TW rom?
You are probably still going to have to use ODIN to get your phone back.
Download the 3 files from the link in post #2
Open ODIN on your computer. Pull out battery from phone, hold DOWN VOL and plug phone into USB. Once ODIN recognizes your phone, click PDA and select the modem file and click start.
Once finished, put battery back in, hold UP VOL, DOWN VOL, and power to get into CWR. Select install zip from SDcard, choose zip, scroll down to the correct file and hit the power button to install the ROM.
Do step 2 for the CW package and reboot.
That should get you going.

I kniw s/he said it but to clarify on this part make sure you use the PDA button. This is very important. It's very easy to mess that part up if you are still new.

About a month ago I upgraded to Ice cream sandwich (LP7) and then rooted my S2. All worked fine for 3 or 4 days and then suddenly it crashed for no reason. I suspect, but am not sure, that it did an automatic update. On rebooting it just stops at the Samsung S2 screen with a yellow triangle.
For the last few weeks i have been trying to find a fix, but am at my wits end now.
I have gone through the different solutions on your site but to no avail also where mine seems to be different is that I can get into boot mode and odin always says its successful. I have tried different pc and usb cable too just in case that was an issue
I can not get into Volume up mode, but i can get into boot mode with volume down. I have tried re loading a few different rom's and Odin says that the transfer was successful each time, however it is still stuck at the same place on reboot.
Tried reloading kernel and re partitioning, and again Odin said it went OK, but still stuck on start screen.

You need to flash a ROM that will wipe your data at once.

2. Flash CM9 Ressurection edtion via Odin

That is a special .tar edition. You simply flash it just like a single file firmware (as PDA).

Hi Tried it exactly the same im afraid Odin says successful phone reboots then sits at Samsung s2 screen and goes no further

I think your data partition is corrupt, but you can still get it solved.
You need to special .pit file. I'll post you the link (for the .pit file and instructions) very soon

About a month ago I upgraded to Ice cream sandwich (LP7) and then rooted my S2. All worked fine for 3 or 4 days and then suddenly it crashed for no reason. I suspect, but am not sure, that it did an automatic update. On rebooting it just stops at the Samsung S2 screen with a yellow triangle.
For the last few weeks i have been trying to find a fix, but am at my wits end now.
I have gone through the different solutions on your site but to no avail also where mine seems to be different is that I can get into boot mode and odin always says its successful. I have tried different pc and usb cable too just in case that was an issue
I can not get into Volume up mode, but i can get into boot mode with volume down. I have tried re loading a few different rom's and Odin says that the transfer was successful each time, however it is still stuck at the same place on reboot.
Tried reloading kernel and re partitioning, and again Odin said it went OK, but still stuck on start screen.
Tried using a jig and turned phone on, but it the phone just went to the start screen again.
If i could just get into reset mode, i could clear the memory, but this is not working either.
If anyone could help i would be very so grateful.

Requirements
A Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100
A Windows PC
Your phone’s USB cable
7-Zip, WinRAR, or any other programs that can extract archive files
Handset USB drivers installed on the PC. You may install the drivers by installing Samsung Kies.
Enable USB Debugging on your handset.
Disable antivirus, firewall, and other security software. Also disable Samsung Kies and other software that accesses your phone. Such software can interfere with the procedure in this guide.
Download the following files to your computer:
Android 4.0.4 ICS firmware build XXLQ5 (I9100XXLQ5_I9100OXALQ5_OXA.zip, 387.1 MB)
copy and paste

Make sure your phone’s battery is charged up to 75% or more to avoid interruptions during the process.

Instructions
Extract the contents of the I9100XXLQ5_I9100OXALQ5_OXA.zip file to get these files:

GT-I9100-MULTI-CSC-OXALQ5.tar.md5
MODEM_I9100XXLQ5_REV_02_CL1165929.tar.md5

Extract the contents of the Odin 1.85.zip file to obtain the Odin3 v1.85.exe file.
Double-click on the Odin3 v1.85.exe file to launch Odin on your computer.
Unplug your phone from the computer if it is connected. After unplugging, turn your phone off.
Put your phone into Download Mode. To do this, hold the Volume Down, Home, and Power buttons together until the screen turns on. Press the Volume Up key to put your phone into Download Mode.
Connect your phone to the PC using the USB cable. In Odin, a message saying “Added!!†will appear on the bottom left of the window.
In the Odin window, click on the PDA button and select the I9100_CODE_I9100XXLQ5_CL753921_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5file. The file should show on the space beside the PDA button.
Click on the PHONE button and select MODEM_I9100XXLQ5_REV_02_CL1165929.tar.md5 file. The file should show on the space beside the Phone button.
Click on the CSC button and select the GT-I9100-MULTI-CSC-OXALQ5.tar.md5file. The file should show on the space beside the CSC button.
Don’t alter anything else in Odin. Leave everything else as is, except for adding the files mentioned in steps 7 to 9.
Click on the Start button in Odin to start flashing the firmware to your phone.
After the flashing completes, your phone will automatically reboot. You should be able to get a “PASS†message on the top left part of Odin.
NOTE: If you get a FAIL message or Odin gets stuck, disconnect your phone from the PC and close Odin. Remove the battery from your phone, re-insert it, and place your phone into Download Mode again. Open Odin and do the procedure starting from step 6.
Once you see the Samsung logo on your phone’s screen, you can safely disconnect your phone from the PC.

Use the stock pit file first before trying the patched ones.

his case is milder than yours. he should get his problem fixed by follow the tutorial i posted.

Try this I did and it worked to get mine booting after a bad update.
I messed around with it using several methods of getting it to boot into download mode until I finally got it to do it. I think I left it plugged into the USB, powered it down until I saw the charging screen, then I proceeded to play with the different ways to hold the buttons to get it to download mode. If you are persistent enough and read a little on booting methods to get bricked phone into download mode you will succed if not then your not for the world of trial and error... the main thing is do the first steps I said before until it works
1. Get into Download Mode (WITH THE PHONE PLUGGED IN) by following the steps below
*Turn off the phone until you get to the charging battery screen (keep in mind, your phone is currently PLUGGED IN)
*Press volume up and down, and power all at once.
*As soon as the screen turns black, release your power button.
2. Unplug phone from USB
or try
2. Remove everything from your phone (SD card, sim, battery).
3. Plug your phone into your computer WITHOUT the battery, as you have already taken it out in the last step.
4. Press and HOLD vol. up and vol. down.
5. As you are HOLDING these buttons, reattach your battery.
6. You should be in Download Mode.
7. Unplug phone from USB
any how try try try until it works
Once in download mode
Get your files together for your phone, and use Odin 1.85.
Plug into Odin and make sure it shows yellow and its added!
1. Now if your files have like 3 files and the exact .pit file for your phone if available.
I found mine here (Find yous stock firmware for your phone)
CLICK HERE
2. Click the PIT button and browse to your exact .pit file for your phone *It should now have added a check in the re-partition box under the options area of the Odin window. If not CHECK IT!
***If you don't have your .pit don't worry about this unless you suspect, or have a bad partition
3. If you have just 1 file just click the PDA button and load the file. If you have 3 then you will load the PDA file in PDA, the Modem file into PHONE, and the CSC file into CSC, there are way too many phones to link all the files so get you stuff together!
4. Now hit start.
5. When done and the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever... immediately unplug the battery from the phone to shut it down.
6. Now put it back in and start it in Upload mode by pressing Vol Up, Home at the same time then the Power button.
7. As soon as the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever let go of all buttons and using the Vol Up down Choose the Clear Cache option and go through and make sure you factory reset it if you can just for good measure.
8. Reboot
9. Now when the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever take out battery again to power off
10. Now put it back in and start it in Download mode by pressing Vol Down, Home at the same time then the Power button.
11. Once in download mode Hook up to Odin again and flash it with a root kernel for your phone. Do not ask me just find it. I did it took time but I got all the files together over several days of reading and collecting the correct ones.
12. When done and the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever... immediately unplug the battery from the phone to shut it down.
13. Now put it back in and start it in Upload mode by pressing Vol Up, Home at the same time then the Power button.
14. In most roots you will now have a advanced or mounting options and more options to use.
15. I cleared the Cache again, Cleared the Davilik Cache, Went into a option and actually mounted the cache formatted the Cache.
16. Use the option now to restart the phone...
And mine started up installed the apps and I am up and running, nice and smooth and no issues so far
I hope this helps out someone whos just about to go off the deep end, as I was there and patience and trial and error came up with this step by step way to recover mine. Thank me by hitting the little thumbs up THANKS button below this post.
