I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but if it has go ahead and send me a link to the proper page (I have searched myself). Now that's out of the way, here's my problem...After having bionix 1.6 installed on my vibrant, I decided that I would flash back to stock via odin and then flash eugene's vibrant_r3 rom. I forgot to disable voodoo before using odin, and I got an error reading (unable to clear data) after trying to flash the stock rom on my vibrant. So fast-forward a bit...I know have a phone that won't seem to flash successfully through odin, and the best I've been able to do so far is reinstall clockwork on my vibrant and flash an old bionix 1.2 rom, which keeps freezing, forceclosing, and just generally bugging-out. So basically it seems like my vibrant is a mess of a bunch of different unsuccesful flashes and reflashes, so what I want is a surefire way to odin back to stock and wipe any and all data currently on my phone (excluding my sim contacts of course)?

This is my second time trying to restore a backup using clockwork and it just hangs on the vibrant screen. The first time I forgot to disable voodoo so that was the problem then, but this time I was on obsidian froyo rom and had issues where I was not able to get any data reception (3g/edge) so I figured to try and got back to stock to see if that solved the issue but no I'm stuck on vibrant screen. It went through the process of restoring then rebooting but it got suck. I am very frustrated because I can't never get it to work so what is the point of backing up stuff. I will be using odin again to restore and not use backups anymore. Just wanted to vent as I am very frustrated about this. If there is some out there that could shed some light as to why I keep getting stuck on the vibrant screen I would appreciate it.
Will be getting a replacement phone from my date issue, and yes my voice still works just not data part.

Froyo has a differnt kernel than eclair. You were trying to restore an eclair build, but you did not flash the stock eclair kernel first.

what eclair kernel can i use for the future???
i odin back to JFD and my 3g/edge is working again i wonder why i lost it?
Probably the easiest thing to do would have been to flash a new custom rom with the kernel included, like Fusion/Bionix.
You could have flashed the stock kernel and then restored a JI6 nandroid too though I imagine. I've not tried yet. The stock kernel can be found in my signature or in the development section. I have a copy on my internal memory just in case.
I rooted my Vibrant yesterday, first timer, and everything went smoothly. I used the Classic way, had no problems. I got ROM Manager, to flash ROMs of course (I've gotten pretty impatient with Samsung and my Froyo) and I decided to partition the SD because I thought it would be a good idea. I did not know that it would partition the INTERNAL SD and brick my phone. After countless hours of Odin, rereading the instructions on this thread, trying to get it back to stock, I managed to get it running Eugene's Unofficial TMO Froyo Image. I am able to boot [Froyo] totally fine, but then when I try to revert back to build JFD or J16, I get the same black screen with only the capacative buttons on. My question is, is there any other possible way to fix this? I've tried almost every single method I've come across, read so many threads, and I've been unable to get back to stock. I've even created an elaborate scheme to walk into T-Mo to tell them I dropped my phone (playing the technologically disabled customer, of course) and asking for a replacement. I apologize for so much text, but I felt that explaining myself might work. Ideas would be much appreciated

Thanks Drew, but I've tried that countless times and all I end up with is a black screen and lit up capacitive buttons. I want to go back to stock because for some reason, Eugene's version of Froyo doesn't allow me to install apps because the supposed, "internal memory" is full. Plus, going back to stock will allow me to redo everything from the beginning.
make sure you flash a 2.1 compatible kernel 1st before downgrading from 2.2 to 2.1..
Try flashing "Eugene's Froyo that doesn't brick" on odin then flash JFD/JI6 whichever you wanna go back to..
WARNING: Flashing Froyo that doesnt brick will wipe internal SD..

$0.02, why not just flash the rom you want over the stock 2.2?
just factory reset, wipe partitions, wipe dalvik cache, fix permissions ALL in CWM
Then flash ROM of choice.. Clean flash.

Also, I just factory reset, and I'm still unable to getapps from the market ,so flashing from 2.2 would be impossible. For app space, it says I have 0.00 B

I had zero problems when rooting and flashing my G1, but now with my Vibrant I am not sure what I did.
A few excellent stickies at the top but I seem to not be making any progress.
Here are the steps I took.
I had a stock Vibrant running 2.1
I downloaded ROM Manager, installed clockwork mod.
Did a backup of my current system ( was I supposed to do a clockwork AND nandroid?)
Downloaded and successfully installed a ROM called Blackhole 1.0
it runs ok but didn't give me the option to switch from 3G to EDGE data, and then I couldn't get internet access at all so i decided to restore my original stock vibrant system.
So I rebooted into recovery, selected restore (my phone won't go into recovery anymore for some reason) and waited, it took a while, then I rebooted (forgot to wipe), but it just got stuck on the Vibrant screen. So I booted into recovery mode again and wiped just user data not cache and rebooted, same thing stuck at Vibrant.
Now i keep hearing about something called ODIN, what I can tell it is some kind of flasher program for ROMS, nobody seems to give any kind of link or anything, is it greymarket or something?
So where am I now? I think the excellent noob guide needs to be updated a bit more.
My phone can get into download mode (whatever it is for i don't know) but it won't get into recovery mode anymore.

but since you can get to download mode.. just flash stock JFD or JI6 through ODIN and you should be good.

Once you get back to stock don't give up on the 2.2 toms. Try axura or nero. They might have a few minor bugs but its way better then stock 2.1.

I have done the samething as you, coming from a nexus one it seemed easier to flash roms without worrying about downgrading kernels or what not. Recently I was on Nero froyo and flashed to a different rom, and tried to revert back but ended up stuck at the vibrant screen. Think it has something to do with voodoo lag.
Anyways I had to use Odin with the no brick froyo off ebproductions. Ran that and uploaded clockwork, reinstalled voodoo lag fix and was able to nandroid back to my Nero set up. Somewhat of a pain but once you've done it, no need to worry about bricking

Well as long as I can use Odin if I f-up royally like above then I might give it a shot.
Need to read about downgrading kernals or whatever. Might just wait for Cyanogen 6.1
Just so you know, the backup utility in Rom Manager (clockwork) is really just shortcut to a nandroid backup.
The way I have things set up for backups, and this is just for my personal convenience, is as follows...
I have a stock JFD ODIN rom to flash in case anything goes wrong. (A lot of people here will tell you to flash this whenever flashing a new rom. It is safer, and cleaner to do it this way, but not absolutely necessary)
I make a nandroid of my last stable rom (I only keep one at a time cause the files are huge) and keep a backup of that on my PC.
I backup all my apps and a few other things (call logs, bookmarks, sms) through Titanium backup. If you get the pro version, you can load it up after flashing a new rom and have it automatically restore all your apps in one click (system settings can be dangerous to restore when going from rom to rom, so be careful with those.) I also keep a backup of this on my PC.
I will also occasionally backup both of the sd cards to the PC.
Maybe overkill, but you probably wont ever lose anything forever.

OK I will just do the long way from now on. I use this phone on AT&T, I was worried that I flushed $500 down the toilet but ever since i modded my first phone way back in the day i've been addicted.

My friend just got his Fascinate back from a warranty replacement, and it is thus STOCK and bloated. Now, I hadn't ever used Odin until after I had a working new kernel on my phone, and my phone was already rooted.
So I was wondering, for my buddy's phone, is it possible to just use ODIN to flash the new modem and a complete rom w/ clockwork mod (such as superclean)?
I guess to be even more accurate, is there any reason why download mode would not work from a stock phone? I don't want to brick his phone since it took him 3 weeks to get it back the first time.
Download mode will work just fine.
You'll need to flash recovery via Odin as well to be able to flash a rom in CWM.

I was figuring on using one of the md5 files that have SC and CWM bundled together in one nice little package. I figure if it doesn't work, I can always try something else.

I just rooted my phone but have not flashed CWM. I don't really care about data or apps in the phone (I'd rather download everything from the market once I'm done) so I haven't made a backup ( I'm a real daredevil ).
Any suggestions or warnings?
Also I'm planning to use Heimdall instead of Odin (Since I'm running Ubuntu). Anyone has done it before. Are there any special instructions?
My worst case scenario is that it fails with Heimdall and I have to get to a Windows PC to run Odin and do it again.

Yeah. I've used those packages before, and that's what I was planning on using for my friend's phone. The only thing was that I've only used those AFTER I was rooted and had roms installed.
I installed a SC (superclean) rom from Adryn, then installed the eb01 Voodoo kernel, then installed the new voodoo kernel from jt (which is super stable). I don't know if you have to go in this order, but I'm not getting any FC issues., and battery seems to be pretty good compared to SC292's kernel.
I'm guessing you don't need to follow the sequence, since flashing a ROM (as far as I know) writes everything you need to make it work. To answer my own question, there is a [GUIDE] Flashing with Heimdall
My wife has a stock unrooted Vibrant running 2.1, and recently she's started having speed issues and the Youtube app has stopped working, so she's asked me to fix it. I was thinking I'd just root and flash her phone with a 2.2 ROM so she could get some tweaks, rather than just update to stock 2.2. I just had a few questions on the flashing process.
1) When I flash a ROM, do I have to go into CWM and wipe data, cache, and Dalvik, or can I just flash over a stock 2.1 install?
2) Whenever I want to flash a new ROM, do I have to return to stock 2.1, and then re-root?
3) Does returning to stock 2.1 delete the phone's user data?
4) Does flashing a new ROM delete user data?
5) Would updating to stock unrooted 2.2 using the Samsung tool delete the user data?
Also, does anyone have any suggestions on a ROM to flash? I'd probably go to a 2.2 ROM, and I was looking at Trigger 3.2, but I'm open to suggestions.
1) Always do all 3 + fix permissions total of 4 options in CmRecovery
2) Flashing FROYO ROMs is easy and can be done with out the need to ODIN. Its just when flashing 2.3 GB ROMs initially that will require ODIN.
3) Wiping of SD cards is known to have different results, for different users, in different situations, at different times, during different moon phases. LOL. jkjk, but to be honest ALWAYS make a backup! Move the backup from the phone to ur PC or else.
4) Same answer as 3
5) Not sure

My sisters Vibrant started to crap out last week and I almost shot myself trying to find a ROM with her that she'd like. Eventually I gave up and we went with @Whitehawkx stock 2.2. BOOM! EPIC win/win
It looks like Bionix has a 2.2 ROM that removes the Touchwiz Launcher. My wife currently uses ADW anyways, so that might help speed up her phone a bit and free up some memory for her apps.
