[Q] New to Vibrant Flashing, Question on Process - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My wife has a stock unrooted Vibrant running 2.1, and recently she's started having speed issues and the Youtube app has stopped working, so she's asked me to fix it. I was thinking I'd just root and flash her phone with a 2.2 ROM so she could get some tweaks, rather than just update to stock 2.2. I just had a few questions on the flashing process.
1) When I flash a ROM, do I have to go into CWM and wipe data, cache, and Dalvik, or can I just flash over a stock 2.1 install?
2) Whenever I want to flash a new ROM, do I have to return to stock 2.1, and then re-root?
3) Does returning to stock 2.1 delete the phone's user data?
4) Does flashing a new ROM delete user data?
5) Would updating to stock unrooted 2.2 using the Samsung tool delete the user data?
Also, does anyone have any suggestions on a ROM to flash? I'd probably go to a 2.2 ROM, and I was looking at Trigger 3.2, but I'm open to suggestions.

1) Always do all 3 + fix permissions total of 4 options in CmRecovery
2) Flashing FROYO ROMs is easy and can be done with out the need to ODIN. Its just when flashing 2.3 GB ROMs initially that will require ODIN.
3) Wiping of SD cards is known to have different results, for different users, in different situations, at different times, during different moon phases. LOL. jkjk, but to be honest ALWAYS make a backup! Move the backup from the phone to ur PC or else.
4) Same answer as 3
5) Not sure
6) Its gawd awful hott here!!!
7) Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply
Also, I agree with 6). I burned myself getting into my car yesterday. Stupid Texas weather....

The AC went out at my werk yesterday, ugh. Back up now but still sittin at 79* even tho I got the thermostat down to 65*
*Tip*
My sisters Vibrant started to crap out last week and I almost shot myself trying to find a ROM with her that she'd like. Eventually I gave up and we went with @Whitehawkx stock 2.2. BOOM! EPIC win/win

It looks like Bionix has a 2.2 ROM that removes the Touchwiz Launcher. My wife currently uses ADW anyways, so that might help speed up her phone a bit and free up some memory for her apps.

[Q] Lookin' for some advice...my Vibrant is well...brickish

Hey everyone-
I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but if it has go ahead and send me a link to the proper page (I have searched myself). Now that's out of the way, here's my problem...After having bionix 1.6 installed on my vibrant, I decided that I would flash back to stock via odin and then flash eugene's vibrant_r3 rom. I forgot to disable voodoo before using odin, and I got an error reading (unable to clear data) after trying to flash the stock rom on my vibrant. So fast-forward a bit...I know have a phone that won't seem to flash successfully through odin, and the best I've been able to do so far is reinstall clockwork on my vibrant and flash an old bionix 1.2 rom, which keeps freezing, forceclosing, and just generally bugging-out. So basically it seems like my vibrant is a mess of a bunch of different unsuccesful flashes and reflashes, so what I want is a surefire way to odin back to stock and wipe any and all data currently on my phone (excluding my sim contacts of course)?

[Q] Cannot return to stock firmware.

I rooted my Vibrant yesterday, first timer, and everything went smoothly. I used the Classic way, had no problems. I got ROM Manager, to flash ROMs of course (I've gotten pretty impatient with Samsung and my Froyo) and I decided to partition the SD because I thought it would be a good idea. I did not know that it would partition the INTERNAL SD and brick my phone. After countless hours of Odin, rereading the instructions on this thread, trying to get it back to stock, I managed to get it running Eugene's Unofficial TMO Froyo Image. I am able to boot [Froyo] totally fine, but then when I try to revert back to build JFD or J16, I get the same black screen with only the capacative buttons on. My question is, is there any other possible way to fix this? I've tried almost every single method I've come across, read so many threads, and I've been unable to get back to stock. I've even created an elaborate scheme to walk into T-Mo to tell them I dropped my phone (playing the technologically disabled customer, of course) and asking for a replacement. I apologize for so much text, but I felt that explaining myself might work. Ideas would be much appreciated
With Odin -
Use this 512.pit
and this JI6.tar
These will take you to bone stock 2.1.
Thanks Drew, but I've tried that countless times and all I end up with is a black screen and lit up capacitive buttons. I want to go back to stock because for some reason, Eugene's version of Froyo doesn't allow me to install apps because the supposed, "internal memory" is full. Plus, going back to stock will allow me to redo everything from the beginning.
make sure you flash a 2.1 compatible kernel 1st before downgrading from 2.2 to 2.1..
Try flashing "Eugene's Froyo that doesn't brick" on odin then flash JFD/JI6 whichever you wanna go back to..
WARNING: Flashing Froyo that doesnt brick will wipe internal SD..
Good luck..
$0.02, why not just flash the rom you want over the stock 2.2?
just factory reset, wipe partitions, wipe dalvik cache, fix permissions ALL in CWM
Then flash ROM of choice.. Clean flash.
Can you link that file for me please?
Also, I just factory reset, and I'm still unable to getapps from the market ,so flashing from 2.2 would be impossible. For app space, it says I have 0.00 B
Had same issue, didn't want to go back to stock though . Look for a post with mbr check sum error, quick walk through
Really? I looked it up, but i don't remember getting that error.message.

[Q] going back to stock?

I want to go back to stock since I read on here its recommended when flashing a new ROM onto the vibrant.
My question is, people talk about using ODIN, or using clockworkrecovery, which one is better?
What is the difference? I basically want to wipe everything and start over, like the Android equivalent of reinstalling Windows
I also read that disabling any lag fixes is necessary. Since I flashed one modded ROM on top of another (I didn't know at the time), I never actually disabled the lagfix, just flashed one over the other. I used OCLF, which now tells me that there is no lagfix installed, and won't even let me install one. So can I go ahead and revert to stock? Or is there something I else I would need to do?
Thanks for any help in advance, still learning.

Titanium RESTORE Question

I am hoping someone has some knowledge of this...I had a lot of trouble getting CWM recovery to boot on my vibrant, but thanks to these forums, I installed ODIN, got back to Eclair, re-rooted and got CWM recovery to boot. I am using the Auxoria ROM and when I installed it I selected wipe data, etc, but when I flashed it through CWM, I am not sure if it did it or not. It appears to be working, but it seems to have a few strange behaviors from before. I then restored all apps and system data from Titanium Backup. Then got to thinking, can Titanium backup restore any system data from the Eclair ROM that would cause issues? When you restore after flashing a ROM, are you supposed to NOT install system data? I wonder if anyone has any experience with that and can make a recommendation. And Happy Mothers Day out there to any mom's out there that give so much to raise a family!
Restoring system data is absolutely a no-no
You typically can restore the green ones, if on the same os... But if you had eclair settings and restored on froyo, I bet you have a lot of little bugs.
I would odin to jfd, flash a new rom and then restore just the apps+ data.
Also, axura was great, but done master has moved to greener pastures you may want to try another. I think master said he would try and support this device still, but that's to much to ask of him I think.

Thank you....What other ROM would you recommend. I looked for one with a working GPS, and minimal bugs. I really want to do cyanogen 7 like my mytouch4g, but it doesn't seem ready yet. Am I just able to reflash and wipe data when I do? Any reason I really have to redo my odin and eclair refresh?

You can't go wrong with Trigger or the new Bionix NextGen.
I would go back to stock, just so you know you'll go to the next rom with no bugs.
Check my signature. Amazingly easy to go to jfd > new rom.
I would suggest Trigger for having everything work as it should/theming.
I went back to eclair and flashed trigger 3.2, but it seems pretty bland? No way to edit functions for home keys, or customize much of anything...looks like 2.2 really, am i missing something? I selected launcher and want to try TW launcher but I can't see where I can do that. I wanted to edit my grids but don't see that either...like replacing the app of web browser with text app...used to be able to edit on homescreen but that is even gone...

Already rooted. Thought about doing my first ROM/Kernel/Radio Upgrade.....but...

now realize that I am totally clueless.
Over a month ago somebody on this board was kind enough to walk me through rooting my phone (I did the manual ADB for dummies and did learn about that part of the programming since I rooted my phone manually. I installed DAS Bamf 1.5 remix, new radio, kernel, etc.... Since then I have been tied up with family emergencies and other priorities and haven't had the time to dedicate to the phone. Now I am ready to update the software and want to make sure that I am doing this correctly. Please note that the original rooting process was completely overwhelming and simply a blurr....
1) Using Rom Manager Premium (Clockwork Mod) version3.1.0.2:
Reboot into Recovery Mode
Backup and Restore
Backup
Reboot system now
2) Titanium Backup Pro
Backup/Restore
(Not sure what settings I should use in Preferences)... I remember reading that one
should not backup system services. Not sure how ....
Batch
Run Backup of all user apps + system data
Run Batch operation
3) From here I am lost...
I know that I have to:
Save the upgraded ROM, Radio, Kernel files in order to install them.
Not sure which ROM, Radio, Kernel. Since I am a newbie, I am thinking of staying w/ Froyo and DAS Bamf 1.7/1.8 after reading about intermittent problems w/ GB along with the infamous bricking.
Wipe out the cache/Memory
As I write this I realize how lost and confused and concerned that I will screw it up.
Is anybody willing to walk me through this the first time?
I will document it so I don't have to trouble this board again...
Thanks in advance...
Hey man.
Nice to see you want to come back. I just ROMed my phone this morning and am loving the options I get. I loaded up BAMF 1.8. I used this guideline to help me out and it's worked like a charm.
http://forum.androidcentral.com/thunderbolt-rooting-roms-hacks/77350-guide-how-backup-restore-install-roms-thunderbolt.html
If I understand you correctly and you want to upgrade BAMF 1.5 to 1.8, the process is not too hard. First do a batch backup of all data and apps with titanium. Save the new BAMF rom to the root of your sd card. Make sure you check the md5 sum of the rom once copied to the sd card against the md5 sum posted on the download page. You can use a free program like Md5summer (Google it). Then, reboot into recovery through Rom manager. Wipe the cache (not sure if you need to wipe data. I would say don't since you already have a BAMF rom, but it is several versions ago. If you have trouble you can go back and wipe it and reinstall). Then, still in recovery , choose install from zip and navigate to the right file. Let it install, choose reboot, and you are ready to go. If you wiped data, restore with titanium.
With that said, you are taking a big risk doing this without understanding it. You could end up with a nonfunctional device if you are not careful. Please take the time to read up on this stuff! I'm not responsible if something goes wrong!
If this was helpful please hit thanks!
Update: Don't worry about the radio or kernel for now. Should work fine with what you have. Read up on the advantages of flashing lights radio/kernel before you decide to change.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Thanks for the link. That is very helpful.
Here is what I am running:
Android 2.2.1
Baseband 1.16.00.0223r
Kernel 2.6.32.21 bamf 4.42-g64d4fb1-dirty by adrynalyne
Build 1.13.605.7_Das_BAMF_1.5-remix
Software 1.13.605.7
If I am too conservative to try GB, what is the best Froyo configuration for battery life, etc....?
Other than upgrading Das Bamf 1.5 to 1.8 (assuming you agree), should I upgrade the Kernel or Radio?
Thanks again.

I haven't updated my radio since DasBAMFRemix 1.3. I am a light user and can usually get 8 hours of battery life. Chargers are cheap. I have 3 one at the office one in the car and one at home. Any way I usually only wipe everything but data when upgrading from a previously DasBAMF release. I believe the DasBAMF releases include a kernel(which gets updated, but not every release)
If you're taking the plung to flashing a new rom. why not do gingerbread. I had nothing but random reboots on everything i tried with Froyo. I'm using BAMF Gingerremix 2.1 . everything is smooth as silk.
if you go that route, you need ginger radio 2.0 or 2.5 and bamfremix 2.1. flash radio, then flash gingerremix both through CWR.
Good luck!
