Hi all, I'm preparing to flash a ROM for the first time and decided to choose the Das Bamf remix 2.05 beta 6 that just barely came out. Now keep in mind I've -NEVER- flashed a ROM before so I've been reading ALOT trying to wrap my head around all this so I know for sure what I'm doing. I manually rooted the phone several weeks ago with ADB and the command sequences in a command terminal and now I want to mod it further.. so I took a look at the direction in the thread and I have a few questions and I'm sorry, I'm a nub,, so bear with me,... What is the best way to do this?
Want a smooth camera? Overclock to 1.4ghz. This is the trick others are using to make the camera smooth in their rom
I understand you can use setCPU for this but others have said the Kernel seems to OC itsef a bit and not to use setcpu... which way is best to do this?
Rom Manager seems to cause corruption issues, flash the ROM manually via clockwork.
I did install Rom Manager and bought the premium version. Now I shouldn't be usign it? and I rooted so I have clockwork installed but not sure how I'm supposed to use it to manually with it.
I appreciate any and all help.. even a good link to how to manually flash with clockwork would be fine as well, I don't mind a little reading to get a better understanding! thanks!

Wipe in clockwork. factory reset/cache/dalvik cache to do a full wipe. the kernel, depending on which one it is, is slightly over clocked. also rom manager does cause problems when installing roms. download them on your pc, or browser via the phone, place on teh root of the sd card (not in a folder) and flash in clock work

Sounds like you read up on the topic. Thank you. My only advice is that the gb roms all have tiny little bugs in them. Read up and if you don't care go for it.
If you want a completely stable phone... Stick with a group Rom. If you want all the cool new features and don't mind working around a few bugs... Go gb. Also make.sure to use the correct radio. Probably the MR 2!

I only use ROM Manager to reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery. It is the second option when you open ROM Manager. My method of flashing a new ROM (performing a full wipe plus a few steps):
1. Reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery from ROM Manager.
2. Use Nandroid to backup your current configuration. Select backup and restore and then backup.
3. Select wipe data/factory reset. This will wipe all applications, contacts, text messages, bookmarks, etc. There are ways to back this information up (Titanium Backup for applications), but I will not go into full detail here.
4. Select wipe cache partition.
5. Select advanced and then wipe dalvik cache. (Most people recommend doing steps 4 and 5 three times in order to ensure it was done.)
6. Also in the advanced menu, select wipe battery stats. (You should do this when charged 100%, recommended for any new ROM flash.)
For some reason, if you flash in ROM Manager it can corrupt the ROM/flash. To avoid this, always use ClockworkMod Recovery.
If the ROM you flash utilizes one of Imoseyon's kernels (which BAMF does), you can use the speedtweak.sh method in terminal emulator (download from Market) descriped in Imoseyon's kernel thread. With a BAMF ROM, none of this is required. You can utilize the included BAMF Toolkit to overclock/underclock and set the governor. The Toolkit also includes a terminal emulator if you wish to try the speedtweak.sh method.
The above steps should be followed when flashing a new ROM. When upgrading versions of the same ROM, you can generally perform a minimal wipe. My understanding of a minimal wipe is the cache and dalvik cache only (three times).
Hope I didn't leave anything out. If so, others can correct me.

I've got the BAMF remix 2.05 version 6 on my root directory on the SD card now and I'll wait till the phone is at full charge before running thr0ough this procedure. Thank you once more wool!

You will also have to flash the MR2 radio. There is a thread in the Development Forum. If you search the thread, you should be able to come up with the method to do this.

I flashed the ROM first, pulled the battery, and then booted in hboot (volume down plus power button). From there, hboot should find the radio and update. Most importantly, make sure the radio file you put on the root of your SD Card is named 'PG05IMG.zip' If you have Windows 7, make sure the .zip is not in there twice. By default, Windows 7 does not show file extensions.
to be safe with ur download make sure to check the md5
command in terminal and adb is
# /system/xbin/busybox md5sum /sdcard/so-so
i think.. lol
checking the md5 ensures ur download is legit.. i had a couple bad downloads causing bootloop.

Easy way with the MD5 I found is to download AFV (Android File Verifier) from market. I download the ROM from xda app onto phone, run AFV on ROM from phone and verify MD5 while also having thread up on computer. Seems easier with those long numbers.
Ok, I have watched this video on YouTube (How to root the HTC thunderbolt, setting up ADB-step 1 & How to root the HTC thunderbolt- version 2.5) and followed these instruction http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...otloader/#rooting-the-thunderbolt-version-2-5
and I think I'm going to give it a try. Do you guys have any issues with those instructions or any advice?

Go to the development section and just scroll through the list, or search, and you'll find the leaked MR2.5 radio. Directions on how to flash should be in the thread, but if you don't find, just rename the radio as PG05IMG.zip and place it on the root of the sdcard (aka, not in any folders in the sdcard). Power off the phone, then power on in hboot by pressing the volume down and power button at the same time. The phone will look for the .zip file automatically and get the radio installed (it'll go through a series of checks so don't be alarmed).
Be aware that the MR2 and 2.5 radios only work on GB and SOME froyo roms. Just read the OP for each rom and see what radio they say to use and you shouldn't have problems. As for picking a rom, each person will tell you something different. Just check out the screenshots, read a little bit about each, and just try them out til you find the one you love

Step 1 would be read. A lot. There's some nice ROMs out there, but I've yet to try the perfect one so far. As for the radio, there's a lot of them out there and no ROM will play well with all of them. Some radios might even brick your phone. The MR2.5 only works with some gingerbread ROMs and one froyo ROM. MR2.0 works with most gingerbread ROMs, and the very latest RUU of froyo. The radio in RUU base 605.7 works with all ROMs I'm aware of up to the 605.7RUU. But, its not stable and will cause random restarts. All gingerbread ROMs are built on a very flawed alpha leak. If stability and reliability are qualities you value highly, avoid them. At this point, solid and reliable looks like the MR2 radio and a ROM based on the most recent froyo RUU. AOSP ROMs like cm7 are still in alpha builds at this point.
The radio is easy to flash. Just figure out which one you'll need for the ROM you want. Have any questions, just hit me up. I like to get my hands dirty with this stuff.
download the new mr2 radio found in the development section. then download das bamf 2.1 gingerRemix.
to do the radio, download and copy and rename it PG05IMG.ZIP (Make sure your computer isn't set to hide the .zip otherwise you will have a file named PG05IMG.zip.zip and it wont corrispond), then put it into your sd card. connect phone into disk drive and your sd folder will open. copy and paste into the root. at this time you can also download the 2.1 gingermix and copy that into your root also. now you need to hold down power button and select restart, then bootloader. it will open and ask if you wwant to update. press power button for yes, up and down volume button for up and down. select update and let it process. then reboot. radio shoulg be good to go. now for the remix gingerbread rom...open rom manager and select reboot into recovery. again use up and down volume and power button:
1Wipe Data/Factory Reset
2Mounts and partitions -> format system (probably unnecessary, but born of an abundance of caution)
3Advanced -> wipe dalvik cache (also probably unnecessary)
4Install zip from SD card -> select rom
5Reboot
(these are the steps I take and were given to me from the mentor I have who helps me when I stop breathing for hours cuz I think I have just bricked my phone. -dont want to take credit for his advice to me)
before doing a new rom, you always want to backup. and more often then not, you will want to do a full wipe of data and factory reset which is found from your Rom manager under the "reboot into recovery"
I'm sure if I missed a step in there someone will point it out, but I think I have it pretty much in line for ya. hopefully
before I rooted I was on the MR2.0 RUU and I had no problems or reboots. I really want a senseless (stock) ROM that is just bare bones. I'm reading through all the different ROMS but I just don't know which one to try. I'm afraid of doing the wrong one with the wrong radio. the one I'm considering right now is the DAS BAMF 1.7. What do you think about that one? Also, if and when the official OTA GB comes out, will I receive it?
I was on 1.7 until gingerbread came out. I love GB and won't be looking back anytime soon
i just tried to get the MR2.0 radio and the link is not working. any ideas?
Server might be busy. Do a Google search for the new mr2 radio and you should have a couple different options to download from.
So I just rooted my wife's phone and froze as many apps as I could without glitching the system out with TB. The phone was super laggy from the box but now it seems better but she said today that it froze on her a couple times. I come from a Droid X with GB 2.3 rooted and it's pretty fast for me. Even when it was stock it was quick. I'm not sure what else to do. Since it's my wife's I would rather leave it as close to stock as possible. Any suggestions.
Also is there a list of apps that can be froze in TB without causing other issues. It may be possible I froze one to many.

I read over it all and my wife's phone is ED04 which is not in his list. I think this is exactly what I am looking for. I understand most of it except the modem stuff. There are so many numbers and versions to use. This is so different than my droid x. If I would have started with her phone first, I probably would have never attempted to mod it. Anyways what should I do now? Would it be better to flash a rom that's not stco but stable and fast. Just for giggles I did a quadrant test on hers and mine. She barely broke 900 while mine is over 1900. Seems like a huge difference being both are 1g processors.

Barely breaking 900 is normal if you are not using a voodoo enabled kernel. The rfs partition is what is the biggest bottleneck. If you truly want a snappy rom, jump to comrom or evil fascinate. I use both equally and both will give you the speed you are wishing to match from your dx. As for modems, your wife's modem is compatible with either rom I mentioned.
For now I would suggest keeping her phone froyo based as gb is still being worked on by our awesome devs, but isn't for the faint at heart just yet IMHO

Perfect, exactly what's needed. So do I follow these steps even tho is says from ED01.
Install Instructions:
If you are coming from a stock ED01 non rooted build follow these instructions:
Download Evil Fascination and place it on your SD card
Download Odin: http://www.mediafire.com/?msnc375idu7xhqt
Download Recovery: http://www.mediafire.com/?pfuhk4ibn9uore3
Install Samsung Drivers for your pc: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779238
Remove battery from the phone
Connect the phone up through USB and hold volume down during the connection
Your phone will be in download mode
Open up Odin and click on the pda button and select the recovery file
Click Start on Odin - phone will reset when flashed
Hold volume up and down and insert battery back into the phone and boot it up. Hold volume up and down while it boots up and it will boot into CWM recovery. If it has boot up to the startup animation you will need to start over and reflash recovery through odin
When you are in CWM recovery continue with the instructions below.
If so I'm ready to flash it.

Yeah that looks good. Just use Odin (pda button) to flash your recovery. (Ensure you are using the PDA button. Cannot emphasize that enough)
Then follow the steps outlines. You're good to go.

This version contains the EC01 modem/radio and imnut's 05/31 PBJ -50mv nonvoodoo kernel

this looks fine, no need to worry about the radio I believe it will use the one from whatever baseband you're at before you flash (ED04 I believe you said) or you can flash the one with ED01 radio... yes ComRom with imnuts' PBJ kernel is good, I would suggest the voodoo kernel one but its up to you, patch on top of that then theme after and you should be set

As anoninja said. You should be good to go. Thing to keep in mind is that it is very difficult to brick your fascinate. Not impassible. But difficult. As long as you stay with fascinate files, never try captivate, vibrant, i9000, etc, stuff, then worse case scenario, you may have to odin back to stock and try again, but even that's unlikely. Good luck. Keep us posted with your progress

Well if you choose evil fascination with the kernel, I think out will automatically convert you to voodoo so no extra steps other then to wait for the conversion after it boots.

After doing some more research I have decided to go with Com Rom 2.0 then patched to 2.1.
I am going to go with this one:

My wife doesn't like the all black theme on the evil rom. Now I am still a little confused on the kernel thing. I have been reading for awhile now and will continue to do so. I'm not understanding if I have to flash the kernel first or rom first. I have been through the fascinate development thread over and over and while most put "how to's" in them, I still don't understand in which order things should go. There is so much to do just to flash a rom on this phone. But I know I will get it done even if I have to start over from fresh. So many roms, kernels, updates, 2.2.3.4.6._______, etc, etc...... What exactly is a kernel? I come from the droid x back ground where we root, cwr, then flash. That's it. Also to me Odin seems to be a 3rd party app that's needed to flash CWR. Other than that is there any other use for it. Sorry for all the ?'s but I like to do my homework before I do something like this. I am a pretty good self learner but the way things are worded for the phone is a little confusing at times. Maybe a step by step list if starting fresh.

yes odin is a 3rd party program used to push installs, and most roms nowadays will root you and install kernel (most come with it built in unless otherwise specified) when you flash them so no worries about rooting or kernels... a little about voodoo here:

I'll try and make it simple, this is how I did it and had no problems:
1. obvious step, have all the driver, programs and packages you need ready to go: samsung drivers and odin on your pc, both ComRom 2.0 and 2.1 patch on sd card
2. assuming you're already on EB01 froyo baseband or higher, you wanna use odin to install CWR
3. from CWR make any backups you want then wipe data/cache/dalvik
4. flash .zip of rom you want (ComRom 2.0), select reboot phone once to ensure it took. Since you're flashing a voodoo kernel on first boot you should hear a robot lady saying she's formatting partitions, this may take a while but its normal
5. once it started up power phone off and boot again into CWR (or use power button menu to boot straight there with 'recovery' option)
6. flash .zip of ComRom patch, no wiping needed and select reboot phone
7. congrats you're rooted, voodoo'd and running ComRom 2.1

I'll try and make it simple, this is how I did it and had no problems:
1. obvious step, have all the driver, programs and packages you need ready to go: samsung drivers and odin on your pc, both ComRom 2.0 and 2.1 patch on sd card
2. assuming you're already on EB01 froyo baseband or higher, you wanna use odin to install CWR
3. from CWR make any backups you want then wipe data/cache/dalvik
4. flash .zip of rom you want (ComRom 2.0), select reboot phone once to ensure it took. Since you're flashing a voodoo kernel on first boot you should hear a robot lady saying she's formatting partitions, this may take a while but its normal
5. once it started up power phone off and boot again into CWR (or use power button menu to boot straight there with 'recovery' option)
6. flash .zip of ComRom patch, no wiping needed and select reboot phone
7. congrats you're rooted, voodoo'd and running ComRom 2.1

You are the shiz nik. Perfectly worded and the timing couldn't have been better. Phone has both files ready to go. I found some more literature on kernels and now understand what it does. Pretty much controls performance of the phone. And I see roms with and without kernels. For my first time with this phone I will go with a kernel/rom. The radio is stock ED04 which I will leave stock. Will update after I finish all of this. My wife will be stoked now that her phone will run smoothly. Thanks for the detailed explanation for me.

I just wanted to thank all of you that helped me here. Running Com Rom 2.0 w/2.1 patch. It's nite and day compared to how the phone was. So much smoother and no lags as of yet. My wife couldn't be happier now with the phone working like it should be. I did encounter one issue tho. I could not create a backup. It would read an error message. (forgot what it said) Anyways thanks a million for the help. The crt animation is awesome and I love the functions when powering off. Rebooting instead of powering off then on and especially booting into recovery without pushing the volume rocker. Well I am going to add a theme for her so richen it up and go from there.

sucks about the backup, the voodoo lagfix CWR versions are known to have problems with this and unfortunately I forgot to mention this, I tend to not do nandroid backups since I don't keep much on my phone in terms of data and apps, being the flashaholic that I am lol anyway good that you got it up and running, its good stuff and a million times better than stock

My wife has a stock unrooted Vibrant running 2.1, and recently she's started having speed issues and the Youtube app has stopped working, so she's asked me to fix it. I was thinking I'd just root and flash her phone with a 2.2 ROM so she could get some tweaks, rather than just update to stock 2.2. I just had a few questions on the flashing process.
1) When I flash a ROM, do I have to go into CWM and wipe data, cache, and Dalvik, or can I just flash over a stock 2.1 install?
2) Whenever I want to flash a new ROM, do I have to return to stock 2.1, and then re-root?
3) Does returning to stock 2.1 delete the phone's user data?
4) Does flashing a new ROM delete user data?
5) Would updating to stock unrooted 2.2 using the Samsung tool delete the user data?
Also, does anyone have any suggestions on a ROM to flash? I'd probably go to a 2.2 ROM, and I was looking at Trigger 3.2, but I'm open to suggestions.
1) Always do all 3 + fix permissions total of 4 options in CmRecovery
2) Flashing FROYO ROMs is easy and can be done with out the need to ODIN. Its just when flashing 2.3 GB ROMs initially that will require ODIN.
3) Wiping of SD cards is known to have different results, for different users, in different situations, at different times, during different moon phases. LOL. jkjk, but to be honest ALWAYS make a backup! Move the backup from the phone to ur PC or else.
4) Same answer as 3
5) Not sure
6) Its gawd awful hott here!!!

My sisters Vibrant started to crap out last week and I almost shot myself trying to find a ROM with her that she'd like. Eventually I gave up and we went with @Whitehawkx stock 2.2. BOOM! EPIC win/win
It looks like Bionix has a 2.2 ROM that removes the Touchwiz Launcher. My wife currently uses ADW anyways, so that might help speed up her phone a bit and free up some memory for her apps.

I may have screwed up here. I rooted my device using Revolutionary, and then using ROM Manager installed the latest Synergy mod on my stock (unrooted Froyo) Thunderbolt. Everything loaded fine, it seemed to be flawless ... but after the update I'm not getting any signal at all. I figured this was a radio issue, so I downloaded the latest radio that was leaked (the 2.11.605 one), put it on my SD card, and flashed that. It said it was "updating" the radio (RADIO_V2), but still no luck. I've tried a few different versions, and although it seems to "flash" and update fine, there's still no signal. Not 1x, 3g, or 4g. Nada. :-\
According to HBOOT, "RADIO" is 1.16.00.0223r, if that helps.
Any ideas on how I can basically undo all this, or have I spectacularly failed at this?

Well you shouldn't panic. Which radio did you flash? I would flash the MR2 one from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154010 . If that doesn't work, I would download the rom directly from Synergy here http://androidfilehost.com/XxXViRuSXxX/roms/synergy/thunderbolt/
From recovery, wipe everything manually (Wipe data/cache/dalvik) than flash the file from where it is on your SD card. If you need specific instructions feel free to ask.

Am I reading this right???? You said you rooted with Revolutionary.... Then you flashed some Synergy mod with ROM Manager (always a no-no).... onto your STOCK, UNROOTED FROYO Tbolt???? How did we go from rooted with Revolutionary to stock, unrooted Froyo? I'm confused.

Ya pretty scary. I'm hoping he meant he rooted his phone and when he said unrooted, he meant "stock" froyo build on his phone.
Sounds like he is able to boot up, just not get any signal.
I'm guessing he is not too skilled in the ways of Android yet.
Lol just found something interesting. Synergy isn't even on rom manager? I was checking to see if the version ofcsynergy he was using was a previous froyo build, and I can't even find it on rom manager
He probably meant that he used Rom Manager to load the rom rather than using recovery.

OK, so I was tired when I wrote my initial post, and I probably didn't make a whole lot of sense. Let me be a bit clearer.
For reference, no, I'm "not too skilled in the ways of Android yet". I've been living with Froyo, anxiously awaiting Gingerbread, and then got fed up and read about all the benefits that come with rooting. Now that an easier method has presented itself - the Revolutionary method, as opposed to opening a command prompt and doing the adb stuff, which I can do - I rooted a friend's phone - but decided to not take the plunge myself - I decided to go ahead and give GB a shot.
So let me break down what happened:
- My phone was unrooted previously, running the same software it came with. I'd done a few OTA updates that Verizon provided but had never gone into my phone. That's why I called it "stock", sorry if that terminology confused people. I just meant it was the OS that came on my phone - Android 2.2 w/ HTC Sense and all that jazz.
- I ran the Revolutionary method posted in the "Thunderbolt Android Development" forum. Worked fine. Ran Recovery and installed Superuser permissions as the documentation said. Worked great. Have a phone where if HBOOT launches, it says -Revolutionary- at the top, and it's got -S OFF. My phone technically is rooted.
- The Synergy mod was also posted in the "TB Android Development" forum. I downloaded that and installed it using ROM Manager (Install ROM from SD). Worked fine ... but then had no signal. Every other aspect of the phone seemed to be working. My radio just wasn't working.
- Downloaded an updated radio from the TB Android Dev. forum, ran that, it said it was updating the radio. Rebooted the phone after the update ... still no signal.
I "solved" this problem by flashing the leaked HTC/TB Gingerbread build, the latest one that was like 400 MB, and when I booted my phone up again I had Gingerbread on my phone with HTC Sense 2.1, and I had signal. So I'm living right now with a fully working phone, but I wanted to dip my foot into custom ROMs. So now I have a backup method just in case the radio thing doesn't work again, but what can I do to install a custom ROM and ensure that I get signal?

Download the GB ROM you want, boot into clockwork (please don't install VIA ROM Manager). In clockwork using you Volume keys to move and the Home button to select....
Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Select Wipe Cache
Select Advanced
Select Wipe Dalvik
Select Go Back
Select Mounts and Storage
Select Format /system
Select Go Back Until you are at the first screen
Select Install from SD Card
Select Choose ZIP
Go to the folder where you downloaded the ROM
Select ROM
Select Yes.
When it is done Reboot.

Hey, at least you didn't brick your phone, so kudos for you for getting that far.
As others have stated there are basically two kinds of radio versions out there. One that work with Froyo builds and ones that work with GB builds.
So depending on the rom you are loading, you just have to make sure you have the right radio to match the rom(the rom thread should tell you what radio it requires). From what you were saying, it sounded like you just had the wrong radio.
Anyways, couple of things you want to make sure you do. Any check to make sure the checksum is correct on the radio (so that it's not corrupt) otherwise you could have some major issues. Also, once you flash the radio and you get your phone back up, make sure to either rename or delete the PG05img file from your SD root, otherwise, again a major hassle.

When the TB first came out, it seemed that people were having issues with using rom manager to flash roms (alot of force closes, things in general not working correctly). So many experienced people said to use recovery rather than rom manager to flash anything on the TB.
I guess that idea just kinda stuck after that.
Ok thanks. I will still use recovery anyhow I am more used to it. Plus I'm kinda old school I love adb haha

I have downloaded Synergy Rom and have no problems except that I am not able to get the radio to flash. I am on verizon and chose the MR3.5 radio. I did a battery pull and then pressed the power and volume down button to enter HBoot but I do not have an option to Upgrade. What am I doing wrong any help is appreciated. I need help quick, thanks!!!
1more thing when i am in the HBoot window my only options are Fastboot, Recovery, Factory Reset, Simlock, Hboot USB, System Info, Image Crc..... it says radio is 1.16.00.0402w.
Does this mean the radio was already upgraded. Why can I not get a signal then?
Did you rename the .zip and have it on the root of your SD card?

Nope..402w is still MR1. Sounds like you are already in bootloader so at this point if it isn't updating then more than likely the file is named incorrectly as stated above.
Radios HAVE to be named PG05IMG.zip (3rd character is a ZERO, not the letter "O"). It HAS to be in the root folder of your SD card. Now, turn the phone OFF.
Next, hold down the VOL-DOWN button. Keep it held down. Is it still held down ? If so, push and hold down the POWER button. When the screen turns on, you can release both. This menu will automatically look for 3 or 4 files with certain names. One of the names (files) it looks for is .... PG05IMG.zip. When/if it finds it, it will check it and ask you if you want to load it. Tell it to load it and then leave your phone alone. It will update it and reboot like normal (if successful).
