Wifi Calling - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do you devs think the Wifi calling is hardware or software related? G2 just released the feature and I'm wondering if we can port it over to the vib.
http://www.androidcentral.com/t-mobile-g2-getting-ota-update-enable-wifi-calling

I'm no dev but this has to be software based. I am also going to venture a guess and say that software will probably only run on 2.2 out of the box.

i saw the company (kineto) that developed this using a vibrant for a demo. Supposedly it is made for 2.2 ..... I think it's going to come down to someone pulling it from that OTA and trying it out.
We should ask some of the top devs on the G2 if they can post that apk for us when they get the ota. I have been waiting for this feature forever so I will be on the lookout!

Yea I saw that picture of the test. I'd say its just an app running on the phone so it makes me wonder if incoming calls would go through wifi. Also this isn't UMA so no handing off to the cell network, is either this app is on or not, is my understanding.

I understand this is a dev related question but think it would be better suited for the q&a section

Should I ota update?

On December15 the official froyo is getting released through OTA. If I update my phone which is rooted and has oclf lag fix will it soft brick and is there a way to update without getting soft bricked? How?
Don't comment saying install a froyo ROM I don'tlike roms and I will not use them at least not now.
Thanks in advance

Research shows the update folder for root seems to be the culprit for ota brick. I suggest unroot your phone and install the ota. I've done it twice with no issues so far.

Ouch... There are plenty of people here who run stock roms. I would assume he rooted for benefits like tethering, metamorph and many others like the lagfix. IMO It was a viable question worth answering.
OTA is fine for rooted phones. The lag fix probably will be an issue.
I always wait for a developer to take the ota, enable root and make it a flashable zip.much better than ota in my opinion.
Not sure how you think you know the release date... You need to qualify that.

If they change the architectural software structure of Ice-cream(2.4 or 3.1?) then no it would not upgrade, But I would bet a dollar the phone will be able to handle at least 2 or 3 more upgrades before software and apps will require a larger ram and duo core cpu
BTW way to the other posting....... froyo, gingerbread etc are the code names they gave each version of android....... 2.2, 2.3 etc

Well either you or he was confused. There's more than a couple Gingerbread themes out there, but thats all they are is themes. There is one EXPERIMENTAL Gingerbread build out, but as such, its not stable and could not be used daily.
Its being worked on, but Samsung has not even released the 2.2 source yet. When that happens, maybe some doors will be opened in that direction.
But as of right now there is NO stable Gingerbread rom, no matter what your friend told you. If there was you would have gotten actual help, instead of some of the less serious responses.

That means that ALL 3G phones on their network will keep getting OTA updates. The only phones that won't get OTA updates will be their 4G phones.

Right now I am downloading an OTA after Odining DI01. Were you in a Corporate store or at an Indirect Agent? Seems peculiar that you would get that information, but I for one am glad you shared it. I was pretty sure I'd be ok(given the Gigs worth of downloads on my PC...).
Anyone who works for Big Red know anything about this possibility?
I've been getting Server Unavailable for over a week now. Actually, ever since the GB leak. I haven't been able to get back to EB04. Never had a problem before.
Anyone wonder if the ota system might be impacted by the 4g rollout? Even their system is only so big. I know I can track my own 3g issues to the same time as the 4g rollout in my state.

Here is some info.
http://www.techradar.com/news/mobile-computing/android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-everything-you-need-to-know-954464
It won't, and this is not at all development related. Post stuff like this in general where it belongs.
You may get a rom that is a port from another device, but don't count on it for several weeks.
oh man, i got all excited thinking someone had done an sdk build rom.
At this point with only 1-2 active ROM devs for the Photon I'm not holding my breath on anything but what Moto pumps out. I wish they would leave more of the gingerbread experience intact like the themed Alien ROM

Until Motorola pulls its head out of its ass and stops releasing phones in the shadow of bigger deal phones... and stops locking its bootloaders... you will never get a finished port of anything to a motorola phone... Photon was DOA in the developer arena since Evo3D came out just before. Locking up all the new 2 year contracts. Even the CM7 port has gone nowhere fast and will never leave alpha state. ICS won't even come close to photon by the time CM ports it.
The new RAZR will also be DOA with the nexus shadowing it. Moto has the same marketing skill as HP with touchpad... that is... none.
will ICS comes on PHOTON officially or no officially ?????

They won't be getting rid of physical button entirely, especially on lower end devices where a smaller screen makes up the cost for adding buttons. Also - some users don't like on screen buttons.
Just because it has on screen controls doesn't mean they will be used for every device from here on out. I can assure you that more than "future" phones will have this OS - several phones currently out will get the update. And if you think other wise we have big issues.

LOL I may think otherwise...
It is still unclear. There needs to be a way to hide the onscreen honeycomb buttons for phones that already have buttons. What about the search button... that isn't shown as one of the new buttons. And the menu button replaced with the recent apps button.
ICS seems to be a larger update than Gingerbread was to Froyo and Froyo to Eclair. I suppose CM could hack it up to work on older phones.. but will manufacturers do that? Or did google add backwards compatibility with button-based phones?

there is no need to. the sdk is for building apps. anyone trying to base a rom off of its files is really wasting their time. it will be missing so many things that it booting would be a godsend. you are talking of a massive jump in kernel versions, froyo is on 2.6.32 gb is 2.6.35 ICS is 3.0.0
Wow what a douche move posting this here. I thought we had an sdk as well. *shakes old man fist*

ICS custom ROMs timeline?

Specifically a question for developers:
So I'm just curious when do you guys think an ICS custom ROM might be available for our vibrants?
More specifically, has google released enough of the SDK and/or ICS code for someone to actually make a working ICS ROM?
Can't wait to see it in action!
Thanks
Edit: my question really is:
what requirements do developers need to start working on a custom ROM when a new OS is released?

[email protected] easy! Anyone anywhere who had working ics on a phone would be on every forum bragging till their head pops off..
There are hundreds of articles that say that google is releasing the source code once "it is officially on devices".
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2395048,00.asp
How long will it take them to have a working rom is another question. The gps issue we have with gingerbread has never been actually fixed, I think it is a driver issue..?
Either way, it all depends, but it IS a valid question once the source is released, until then people are just going to flame your thread.

Either way, it all depends, but it IS a valid question once the source is released, until then people are just going to flame your thread.

Google is your friend.
And regardless if this is a question about development for developers, it's still the wrong section. That is why we have a "Q&A" section for future development or whatever.

First of all, it's still a question, regardless of the content, unless there is a specific development thread about ics, this question belongs in the q&a section, you're not someone special where the rules don't apply.
Secondly, since source for ics hasn't even been released yet (this is the vibrant, so some sdk port won't ever work, regardless of your secret hopes and dreams), and even then, it's gonna take people a bit to get situated with the new code, and get used to the new features, apis, and bugs.
To ask for a timeline for something that's not even out into phones that it's actually built for is kinda insulting to people IMHO.
But, I give it 2-3 months after source drop to get into a basic useable form on the vibrant.

First, I never said you demanded a a timeline, I said you asked. And the hopes and dreams thing wasn't directly at you, it was directed at all the people who don't finish reading a sentence, and only tale from a sentence what they want and twist everything around (and also takes cares of the stupid "one can hope" comments).
