I was just wondering, how this will affect development of current roms and new roms?
Here is some info.
http://www.techradar.com/news/mobile-computing/android-4-0-ice-cream-sandwich-everything-you-need-to-know-954464
It won't, and this is not at all development related. Post stuff like this in general where it belongs.
You may get a rom that is a port from another device, but don't count on it for several weeks.
oh man, i got all excited thinking someone had done an sdk build rom.
At this point with only 1-2 active ROM devs for the Photon I'm not holding my breath on anything but what Moto pumps out. I wish they would leave more of the gingerbread experience intact like the themed Alien ROM
Right there with u Shabby! OP.. Ur an idiot! Delete this crap!!

Until Motorola pulls its head out of its ass and stops releasing phones in the shadow of bigger deal phones... and stops locking its bootloaders... you will never get a finished port of anything to a motorola phone... Photon was DOA in the developer arena since Evo3D came out just before. Locking up all the new 2 year contracts. Even the CM7 port has gone nowhere fast and will never leave alpha state. ICS won't even come close to photon by the time CM ports it.
The new RAZR will also be DOA with the nexus shadowing it. Moto has the same marketing skill as HP with touchpad... that is... none.
will ICS comes on PHOTON officially or no officially ?????
you will know it's official when they announce it for the phone officially.

It looks like ICS was designed for phones without buttons. So probably not

They won't be getting rid of physical button entirely, especially on lower end devices where a smaller screen makes up the cost for adding buttons. Also - some users don't like on screen buttons.
Just because it has on screen controls doesn't mean they will be used for every device from here on out. I can assure you that more than "future" phones will have this OS - several phones currently out will get the update. And if you think other wise we have big issues.

Reason is that your remark was personal to a member.
You may say F motorola ,for say, locked bootloader, nobody is stopping you.
Just respect other member(s).

LOL I may think otherwise...
It is still unclear. There needs to be a way to hide the onscreen honeycomb buttons for phones that already have buttons. What about the search button... that isn't shown as one of the new buttons. And the menu button replaced with the recent apps button.
ICS seems to be a larger update than Gingerbread was to Froyo and Froyo to Eclair. I suppose CM could hack it up to work on older phones.. but will manufacturers do that? Or did google add backwards compatibility with button-based phones?

Tho i see this was just announced that Nexus S will be getting 4.0 so maybe you are right.. it can be back-ported:

Im pretty sure the whole buttons thing its just a line in build.pop fix.

there is no need to. the sdk is for building apps. anyone trying to base a rom off of its files is really wasting their time. it will be missing so many things that it booting would be a godsend. you are talking of a massive jump in kernel versions, froyo is on 2.6.32 gb is 2.6.35 ICS is 3.0.0
Wow what a douche move posting this here. I thought we had an sdk as well. *shakes old man fist*

Our devs worked very hard to unlock our bootloader so I don't believe you are giving them enough credit when you say its been unlocked since day one. You acknowledge that the Atrix version is not stable. Well that is kind of a problem for us because the Atrix team will most likely be the ones who will port it over for us. There was a thread started about it on the cyanogenmod forums about two weeks ago so you might want to keep that thread alive. A lot of people aren't willing to sacrifice their 4g access for custom ROMs just yet but once the 4g issue is fixed then I think you will see a lot more. You might want to communicate with the Atrix team and show them your support and offer your device for testing if you wish to speed things up. Just make sure you have a nandroid backup.
First rule of Cyanogenmod is don't ask for an eta.
Sent from my Motorola Photon 4g
Not being a Dev (yet. I am eager to learn) my layman's/noob's suggestion would be for the Photon Dev's and the Atrix Dev's to combine forces to create CM7 for both phones. If I am not mistaken, and please correct me if I am wrong so I can learn, the Photon & Atrix are very similar and with the exception of the RIL and a few other minor differences the CyanogenMOD ROM for both phones would be practically identical. Sometimes too many cooks spoil the soup but most of the time the more great minds the better.
I understand that both the Photon & Atrix Dev's put in a ton of work to root & unlock the bootloaders. They did this out of a love for what they do and asked for nothing in return, they should be thanked and praised for their efforts and contributions to the community.

I think it has more to do with people getting annoyed with noob and uniformed questions. Since when did a a different phone with an unstable version and a bootloader that will break 4G become a prerequisite for the Photon getting CM7?

if you want something bad enough why not jump in and help rather then ask for it? my comment about we are waiting on you to make it still stands. its not going to happen without people stepping forward. with the epic touch coming out soon, face teh facts people this is the highest amount of development/users this phone will have. great phone, just overshadowed by two other phones at launch. once the et4g comes out a lot of people will leave here claiming development is too slow etc etc. what im getting at with all this is if we want this phone to succeed, we as a collective need to make it happen, no on eis gunna come in and start making everything awesome.

this is awesome news!
Specifically a question for developers:
So I'm just curious when do you guys think an ICS custom ROM might be available for our vibrants?
More specifically, has google released enough of the SDK and/or ICS code for someone to actually make a working ICS ROM?
Can't wait to see it in action!
Thanks
Edit: my question really is:
what requirements do developers need to start working on a custom ROM when a new OS is released?

3-4 Months until you have something usable. That is provided the Vibrant still has developers left to work on it. A lot of ppl switched.

[email protected] easy! Anyone anywhere who had working ics on a phone would be on every forum bragging till their head pops off..
There are hundreds of articles that say that google is releasing the source code once "it is officially on devices".
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2395048,00.asp
How long will it take them to have a working rom is another question. The gps issue we have with gingerbread has never been actually fixed, I think it is a driver issue..?
Either way, it all depends, but it IS a valid question once the source is released, until then people are just going to flame your thread.

And regardless if this is a question about development for developers, it's still the wrong section. That is why we have a "Q&A" section for future development or whatever.

First of all, it's still a question, regardless of the content, unless there is a specific development thread about ics, this question belongs in the q&a section, you're not someone special where the rules don't apply.
Secondly, since source for ics hasn't even been released yet (this is the vibrant, so some sdk port won't ever work, regardless of your secret hopes and dreams), and even then, it's gonna take people a bit to get situated with the new code, and get used to the new features, apis, and bugs.
To ask for a timeline for something that's not even out into phones that it's actually built for is kinda insulting to people IMHO.
But, I give it 2-3 months after source drop to get into a basic useable form on the vibrant.

hey everyone... is development here dead or what? i saw ics was being worked on but got dropped. along with miui, a senseless rom, and others...
is there anything we can do to make more development here?
No development is not dead, if your new here, there are a couple things you should know. First, the dev doing all the work here, xboarder56, was banned I believe, he has his own forum and all of his roms are there. Nrgz28, an awesome dev, has an amazing rom. Faux123 has a kernel for OC/UV. Ics is being worked on by xboarder and a member of the cm team. A sense 4.0 port is on the works by a dev in xboarders forum. So, no, development is not dead. If we want more devs devving here, I think we should do what has been done before, a bounty. I believe someone has spoken to a member of the virtious team.
Edit: sorry, xboarder is working on an aosp build with texasice if you know who he is. And the cm team is working on, well, A cm9 build

well i've personally never owned any htc phones. so when i get the amaze 4g, it will be my first. i've made many roms and mods for phones with vanilla android though.
what exactly is s=off and how do you make a htc phone "s=off"?
also, i dont see any boot logo changing threads...

so if i am able to figure something out, i should have some goods to bring to the party!
how high is the chance of bricking on this device?

Can't change splash screen without s=off... Only animations. AFAIK, s=off is a security flag put into a system partition to prevent us from flashing new radios, flashing splas screens, or flashing kernels in recovery... HTC has made it more difficult for devs to access this and hack the exploit, so we are for now... Stuck. Team Revolutionary has hacked a few devices, but they don't have an amaze.
It's becoming a pain in the ass. Because the phone is a North American marketed device (vs a world market device)lacks worldwide development... And devs that are in the states that can get the phone don't want it because no s=off.
There's approx a $1k bounty out for whoever hacks it though.... Although nobody seems to be biting on it.
The Amaze forum is a mess... Lol but the phone is a beast.
Edit.... As far as I know, the phone cannot be bricked. I've yet to hear of any "real" brick... Only soft bricks that can be fixed.

its not dead but, I have a feeling its going to be soon. with the discontinuation of the amaze... the parting of xboarder and binary to their own forum. The forum has lost its momentum. what is left from development is from before. compared to the sgsII forum, you can def call the amaze dead on development. yes xboarder is working on ICS and cyanogen is planning of an AOSP rom. I think we will see no other kernel developers besides faux, unless it's for ICS.. and I think the developers we have now are the only ones that we've got. With the anouncement of new HTC phones more developers are going to shift gears...some developers from here might even shift gears...they might send us an update on a rom here and there but that'll be it. if you look at the development of successful phones such as the nexus one, samsung vibrant, galaxy nexus etc, all of them are still going very very strong even though they came out 2 years ago, the vibrant a 2 year old phone already has multiple ICS roms available, multiple kernels, etc. we're pretty much done here. the developers we have here had to be bountied anyways. My personal opinion is that there is no interest left in the amaze development wise besides a couple of developers....sorry but have to be realistic.

I've been looking at what's been going on at xda & it seems like development for the Amaze is moving but not as fast as the sensation. Is it easier to develop for that phone than it is for this one. I known this phone has more power than the sensation so why are there so many ROMs for the sensation. Thanks for all your help guys.

I am going to wait and see how the new phones that T-Mobile gets. If the One X has more development, might as well to switch over with something that has more activity.
I would say there are two main differences between this phone and the Sensation. (1) The Sensation is owned by far more people (ergo, more developers), and (2) Development is more difficult without S-off. I'm just guessing here, because I'm not a developer, but those seem to be our biggest problems.

Does anyone think the new leak of the Android 4.0.4 Rom from the SGS III will get ported or even work for an SGS II? I downloaded it anyhow, all 785MB of it!, LOL
I don't think the entire rom will be ported, just a lot of its features will. 99% of xda hates bloat so we just have to wait and see man.
For any devs reading, I cast a vote for porting the rom in its entirety.

I agree Lets get the whole rom first and then tweek it.

the whole rom will never be ported. parts will be eventually.
Only the necessary of the rom will be ported... I love custom ROM's. It' sooo free and incluse 0% bloatware!
Probably. Maybe. Should be. The point is, we dont know because it hasnt happened yet. When the rom leaks out, we may get part or the whole thing. It might require hardware that we dont have on our phone, we dont know.
So, speculation threads arent really kept around, but if you all can play nice and not post dumb things, Ill let this stay open.

I think most of it or a light version can be ported over but I really doubt a full version will. Even more with the new hardware that beast is sporting.
Then again only the devs know.
I know the HTC roms were ported all over the place, like a 2 dollar hooker.
Hope we can see that happen here.

Yesterday (earlier today) I tried a dirty port by copying most of the important folders but no luck there just bootloop.
Hopefully we can get many of the cool stuff ported over.

What's happened to Atrix forum, I see no more Android development for Motorola Atrix. is it depend to locking of bootloader by Motorola?

What? You really have no idea what you are talking about do you? The devs are definitely still working on the Atrix, and you come across like you are questioning the devs and only an obnoxious person who wants and demands everything for free, without putting in any effort, will do that. No, our devs are still very much alive and kicking. They do have a life you know...
My bootloaders been unlocked for close to a year now...

patience
You have to remember that these developers work from basically ground floor up, they are dependant on what is released from Motorola and Google, which is a whole lot of nothing on a good day. They also work on their own time without any real monetary support. We all have to just sit an enjoy our steak and stop worrying about what's for dessert.

Are we getting trolled here or what the hell is going on? The Atrix has had continuous development from the first day of release until now and it is still going strong. We have a ton of roms to flash and awesome kernels. Just wait and watch when ICS comes out and this forum will be flooded with new **** for the Atrix.

obvious troll is obvious. if you dislike the current state of the development for the atrix, go buy another phone. maybe an iphone. yearly releases of magical hardware and software.
Slowed, but not gone.
Atrix development has slowed somewhat, but it's still happening. One thing that I have noticed though, a significant number of people are shying away from xda and publishing developed ROMS on their personal websites.

Probably because a lot more developers are getting tired of the increasing stream of BS that's flowing through the XDA forums (and it's not limited to the Atrix, either, not by a long shot). They probably figure that the increased exposure isn't worth all the crap they have to put up with.

There's so many demanding people on here.
Sent from my MB860 using xda app-developers app
It makes it hard for us as users as developers are constantly being asked by silly people to make the rom to thier specific taste and genuine issues or questions are lost in BS, if I hear another person whine about words with friends or some obscure apk they have to use, I am gonna scream lol.
Don't feed the trolls...

+1 mines got more life than I do.
Funny that when my friend who owns an IPhone cannot believe all the fun I have customizing my phone and how much faster and lighter my phone feels, and don't get me started on all the blackberry folks who have to charge their phone twice a day and don't believe how long my phone lasts. The Atrix is a beast and I plan on rocking it for a long long time.
