HOW TO: Flash Voodoo Kernels and more... <LOOK HERE FIRST - Fascinate Android Development

Ok...I know this can be a complicated process if you run into issues...so here is a detailed how to...Make sure and READ thru the WHOLE post!!!!!
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
1. ROOT, Flash CWM Recovery
2. Create a FULL nandroid backup
3. Download a kernel of choice - links below
4. Put the kernel on root of sd, or you can leave it in download folder, but DON'T rename the file
5. Boot into Clockwork MOD recovery (either from ROM Manager or manually- hold volume up and down at same time and press power button, then select "apply sdcard: update.zip"
6. In recovery select "Install zip from sd card"
7. Select "Choose zip from sd card"
8. Navigate to the kernel file and select it
9. Let it install, it will take a few minutes...screen will go weird (black with big blue letters) then take you back to recovery.
10. Reboot phone
IMPORTANT: THIS BOOT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME...MAY BE 5-25 MINUTES...WAIT IT OUT. DO NOT PULL BATTERY. EVEN IF IT IS AT A BLACK SCREEN WITH SOFT KEYS LIT UP, DO NOT TOUCH IT. YOU WILL HEAR FEMALE VOICE. THIS IS NORMAL.
11. Once phone boots, download SetCPU from market and set the slider to desired Max. Do not select "Set on boot" and use Conservative mode.
ENJOY!!!!!
KERNEL LINKS:
- jt1134 - [RELEASE] Voodoo (v0.2) ext4 lagfix for Fascinate! Now with AOSP boot animations!
- Dirrk - [KERNEL] Dirrk v01 Voodoo lagfix OC/UV - For Dirrk OC kernels, use the D012 kernels, not D01: D012 - Dirrk > Open the link>select my folder>the samsung and you will see the D012 kernels...
***If you are using jt1134 kernels with boot animation ability, here is how to add it. Find the boot animation you like, download it to your phone. Do not unzip it. Use Root Explorer or Astro File Manager and copy the bootanimation.zip file into either system/media or data/local. Reboot phone to test out.
HOW TO DISABLE VOODOO LAGFIX
1. Use Astro File Manager or Root Explorer app...open the app
2. Navigate to sdcard/Voodoo folder
3. Create a new blank FILE named disable_lagfix....NOT A FOLDER
4. Reboot phone
IMPROTANT: THIS BOOT WILL TAKE EVEN LONGER THAN THE INSTALLATION OF VOODOO KERNEL BOOT...AGAIN, WAIT IT OUT!!!!! DO NOT PULL BATTERY.
NOTE: IF YOU ARE RUNNING ANY OF VOODOO KERNELS, VERSION 0.2+, YOU CAN FLASH ANY OF THE VOODOO OC KERNELS OVER...INCLUDING JT'S OVER DIRRK'S AND VICE VERSA...IF YOU WANT TO GO BACK TO A REGULAR KERNEL, YOU MUST DISABLE VOODOO FIRST...ALSO IF YOU WANT TO CREATE A FULL NANDROID BACKUP AS WELL, YOU MUST DISABLE VOODOO LAGFIX. IF YOU BACKUP WITH VOODOO ENABLED, YOUR DATA WILL NOT BACKUP. IF YOU RESTORE YOUR NANDROID BACKUP, THE KERNELS ARE NOT RESTORED.
If you ran into trouble, start HERE:
- Adrynalyne - How to completely remove Voodoo Lagfix
- Odin Files to get you back to stock
VERY IMPORTANT:
-Battery issue can be because your phone is too hot...pull battery and let it cool down for 5-10 minutes...then boot up and see if its there.
-IF uninstalling v0.1, create a FILE in sdcard/voodoo and NOT a folder...
-Once uninstalled v0.1, DELETE the disable_lagfix file, before flashing v0.2...
-Boots take may FOREVER in between changes, especially after uninstalling.....WAIT it out. It may be 5 minutes, may be 15. Don't start pulling batteries and using Odin just yet.
-READ all instructions carefully and FULLY....
-And lastly, ALWAYS do a nandroid backup.

Wow. Great write up. Thanks a ton for this

I really hope this eliminates 99% of issues that people run into.

Nicely done. Concise and accurate

awwww man, if only this was posted this morning I wouldn't have called for a doa swap.. lol i thought my phone was fubar-ed earlier b/c of the oc kernel.. i finally got everything fixed the hard way by wiping and loading stock kernels.. that didn't work too well either.. long story short i got everything working but after i called for a swap and before this posted lol.. great post!

wish this was in place before i started flashing. lol. i had to learn the hard way. many flashes later i have learned what to do but this definately deserves a sticky so others dont have to go thru what luckly only took me a day to figure out but could have taken longer.

I've been running the 1200 kernal for a few days with no problems. I do have setcpu set to load on boot.....just curious if I should change it? And why? All seems OK.

Nice post, tats.

Kudos for a great, concise write up!

Once you confirm that its completely stable even Dirrks says its OK to set on boot. You just wanna be 100% sure it is before you get caught in an endless boot loop. But yeah a couple days is long enough to ensure stability; go ahead and lock it in if you want

Is this rom and kernel really that much better than stock?
I guess I'm asking is battery life better and is the speed of the phone better with the lag fix??

I have Voodoo .2, and I set the bootanimation in both folders, both in system/media, and data/local, and the standard animation keeps playing anyway.
Anyone have any ideas ????

Yes this kernel with voodoo is that much better. Voodoo isn't that BS one click lag fix. Its a real permanent solution." Basically" the same filesystem all other phones come with.quadrant can do 17-1800 which isn't inflated. Its what the galaxy can actiually do. And that just with eclair(2.1) battery life is the same. The phone will likely never lag on u again. And actually with a normal filesystem its prolly the fastest smoothest running phone out there. Would easily put the second generation snapdragons to Shame. If u try it u will be hooked. It is *VERY IMPORTANT* that before u flash any other kernels that u disable ur lagfix first. This can also be done easily with the app "voodoo toggle" in the market. If you like your phone now you will love it now. Take the plunge. You wont regret it. Just do your reading and follow instructions on how to install and remove voodoo to a T and you will be fine.

Wound up having to restore an old voodoo, the v. 0.2 standard clocking one, from a jt's 1.2 OC kernel. The restore worked fine, but I'm currently trying to disable in order to flash stock kernel and a clean ROM and then get voodoo back. The boot up has been going on for about an hour, heard to voice at the beginning and about 20 minutes in. How much longer will it take? I'm getting kinda nervous as I really don't want to have a bricked phone on my hands.
EDIT: It was about 2 hours and I pulled and went to go do an odin restore. The phone flashed PIT, system, kernel and recovery all successfully, I wiped everything from both clockwork and the blue 2e recovery screen, but now I can't access clockwork nor does the phone boot, however it does appear in adb. Does anybody know what I should do?
EDIT2: Reflashed all the files from Odin, got it to boot both into clockwork and pure stock. Gonna go flash a nandroid and get my setup back.

You can use the disable_lagfix as a folder, I have tried it and it works. Voodoo is looking for anything disable*lagfix so it works even with a dash, space, numbers...

I followed each and every direction to the last word, however I can't seem to overclock my phone. I installed the jt1334 kernel, but the max i can go is 1ghz (1000000mhz). help?
EDIT: In addition, I did both a linpack and Quadrant Standard test. my linpack score was "MFLOPS:8.142" and my Quadrant
Standard score is "950".... i don't understand what I did wrong as I see others have QS scores of 1600+ at least 1200+...

I have the same issue. I thought it was originally because I extracted the bootanimation.zip out of the downloaded file but renaming the original file didn't work either.

If its just the voodoo 0.2 file, then boot animation wont work. It has to be the 1000_bootabimation kernel or the 1200_bootanimation one.

I actually fixed it somehow... I don't necessarily know what I did though. But thank you for your help!

"Idiot-proof" lag fix?

I've looked at all the lag fixes for the vibrant so far and they all seem to be sort of a pain in the as, i.e. connect phone to your pc, run this, blah blah blah. Being the lazy bastard that I am, I was wondering if there was an apk or a .zip "rom-like" file that I could install that would fix the problem without having to connect my phone to my pc or whatever. Is there anything like that out there? Thanks in advance.

You still need to be careful and be prepared to restore your phone from a backup. None of the lagfixes seem to ever go smoothly. The one click .apk messed up halfway through and said it was going to revert, but the revert failed miserably.

How is 2-3 lagfix difficult?
Download the lagfix
Plug phone in with usb debugging enabled
Run the lagfix batch file
???
PROFIT!
I recommend JAC's kernal with ttabbal's lag fix. Stable for me and fast as hell!

Installing the latest busybox and Samsung drivers are hard *end sarcasm*

I've found RyanZA's lag zip 1.0 packaged as an update.zip by Tatyama to be just perfect and simple. Just copy to internal memory, boot into recovery, and select 'update packages'.
It seems once the devs got fancier with the fixes, more problems arose, such as mounting problems, lack of font switching, loss of data, etc.
ive had, by far, the most luck using this method and its relatively simple
its also important to note, ive done this about 15-20 times now, and it usually doesnt work unless im starting with a fresh, wiped rom, and formatted sd (how u should be doing it anyway!)
1) install drivers (literally like 3 clicks, download, and open the exe file):
http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDo...SB-Driver-for-Windows-x86-Download-96692.html
2) Get RyanZA's batch lagfix here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=384443&d=1282320979
3) Now enable debugging and double click the lagfixme.bat file in the unzipped folder. And done.
these are my results:

Then you download either setcpu or CPU tuner from the Market to control the clock speed but that's it. You'll have to tinker with it to see what your phone can handle and what battery life is like. Read the thread for whatever kernel you install, most questions you have will be answered there.

it will ask for root
allow it
when it enters...
select set on boot
try changing from conservative to performance or powersave
in the to thing [----------|--] yuh can now select the speed

Not to sound like a n00b (too late) how do i install this dragon kernel lol
I might be off my rocker, but I have always been taught that you never select "set on boot" until you know what your phone can handle.
For instance, if he sets on boot and then hits performance 1.4ghz and his phone freezes, he could be ****ed because when he turns his phone back on its going to set it to performance 1.4ghz, which may cause him to freeze right off the bat again and infinitely thereafter.
Lemme know if my ****s all retarded.

flash it like a ROM or you can get the SGS kernel flasher from the market and use that.
MAKE A BACK UP!!
i would also recommend using the 'on demand' setting in SetCPU as it helps with battery, and can be tweaked using the adv. settings (but i wouldnt get into that just yet ... just set to ondemand for now)
i usually get into recovery mod and create a back up, then flash the kernel. If it flashes correctly make a new backup - i have not been able to restore from a backup that used a different kernel. If you use SGS kernel flasher, you can back up the original kernel if you find your phone doesnt like the OC one.
good luck, let us know how it goes.
So i reinstall packages? Can i do this via Clockwork recovery?
So i put it in the root of my internal sd and reinstall packages?

so download the kernel you want to use and get it to your SD card (i ALWAYS use the primary SD, not ext). Either mount your sd card to your pc and transfer or DL straight to the phone.
Once there, power off phone and use the three button method to get to CWM recovery.
From there choose install zip from sd
select choose zip
scroll through folders to sd
select the .zip that is the kernel you downloaded
select yes
once the line says install complete, select go back and reboot
let reboot - will take a few mins (will wipe dalvick cache)
once booted, your phone will now have the ability to be overclocked, and you must use a program such as SetCPU (what i use) or voltage control (will be installed with the kernel).
hope that helps
Nah, just install to the root of your SD. Then choose install zip from SD. Then choose zip, then scroll to your kernel and select it. It will flash, should be pretty quick. Then you reboot system.

cant really help you there, i use set CPU. End result is approx the same. Use it all the time to adjust battery usage ect. Can create power profiles ect - tons of reading available all over the net on how to use it.
you can probably just search this forum or google voltage control app and see what comes up. With it being overclocked right now its going to be a tweaking game to find out what settings increase performance but dont create a volatile or unstable os.
good luck!

[Q] Urgent Help! Restore CPU Settings!

Help guys. I rooted a buddys fascinate. Had a backup but I accidentally wiped that too.
We were comparing phones and I had him run Quadrant and using ROM Toolbox I had him slide his CPU all the way up. Phone reboots now about a minute after you boot into the phone. Not enough time as its still loading/media scanning to get to the app and turn sliders back down.
I thought ADB would work through CWM and I could pull the app but that didn't work.
I flashed the same kernel (KGB over a touchwiz ROM) on top of it hoping it would reset but no luck.
What are my options?

i have. it still reboots about a minute after booting - i assume because ROM Toolbox is still there trying to set CPU?
Edit: also, i'm a little surprised i wasn't able to ADB through recovery? It was on the same laptop i rooted it with so I'm sure the drivers are there. Wire is OK as I was browsing the SD card.
Edit #2: ok i'm losing my eyesight. last night i saw a link to a stock eh03 kernel I was going to try. I figure if the kernel doesn't support OC'ing, i could get in. uninstall the app and flash the KGB kernel back. can you point me to the stock kernel or at least one w/out OC'ing support?

Edit* Not sure where the contacts are stored, somebody can hopefully chime in there.
Also one thing you could try is going into the sd card via pc and deleting the rom tool box app in system/app folder. I have not tried this before...so it may or may not work! You can try flashing the stock kernel, but Im not sure if that will do anything either. Never really been in this situation since I keep all my stuff backed up.

No because the kernel dont overwrite the app data...your OC app(rom tool box) still has the voltage script written in the initd folder and the stock eh03 kernel is capable of being OC'd...so nothing will change there.

Also, I followed you guide to flash TSM, so I'm pretty sure its running CWM 2.5.1 (its all red). Shouldn't I be able to adb in through recovery and take out the init.d script/modify text values for the CPU/Pull the ROM Toolbox apk/etc?
Edit: YES YES YES.. sd card via PC.. but.. how do I get to the /system/app through SD card on PC while in recovery. All I get is the SD card contents?

Im sorry I meant mhz not voltage lol...
scratch the sd card idea, you cant access the system from pc.
If you are familiar with adb, then yes I believe what you said above will work. One thing tho, stock kernels do not support init.d scripts. So if your on the stock kernel, the rom toolbox app must be applying the OC on boot. I think your best shot is to pull the RTB.apk via adb.

I haven't tried stock kernel yet. So if it doesn't support init.d, and thats how its being set - seems a valid theory that flashing it would get me back into being able to boot OK.
Whats RTB.apk?
And any ideas as to why I can't adb in when in recovery? Just a driver issue you think? I used the same laptop to root his phone so i figured drivers would be good, so I didn't explore that much last night. USB Mount worked OK obviously.

I haven't tried stock kernel yet. So if it doesn't support init.d, and thats how its being set - seems a valid theory that flashing it would get me back into being able to boot OK.
Whats RTB.apk?

(ROM TOOL BOX. APK) lol
If rom tool box is setting the OC at boot and not using init.d script, then no flashing a stock kernel wont fix it.
The samsung driver you used wont work with adb, you need the nexus google driver. A simple Google search will pull it up.
Fyi, the next time you run into issues, a full detailed writeup on the devices setup and exact methods used to get there would help alot.

Hmmm.. Maybe I made a false presumption (being the owner of a Nexus S 4g, totally pimped the hell out btw) that I already had those drivers. Thank you man. You pointed me in the only possible right direction.
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459905 <-- according to that the stock kernel doesn't do OC?

[Q] V6 - Lose 25% - build/local.prop ADJs NOT Found

Re: Motorola Droid X2
When checking to see if V6 Supercharger is working at 100% I get...
Lose 25%: Build/local.prop ADJs Not Found.
What did I do wrong? I've tried removing/installing several times. I always get the same response.
stock rom?

sd_shadow,
Thanks so much for the post!
Here's what I did...
I uninstalled BusyBox and reinstalled using busybox_v1.19.4_wraithdu--installer_script_v14.zip.
I uninstalled V6 and started again with V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-Update9_RC11.sh.pdf.
I ran the script (su,boot), 99supercharger.sh.
I experimented...
I uninstalled V6 and reinstalled using V6_SuperCharger_for_Android-Update9_RC12-BlackDog-63457_Fix.sh.pdf, then 99supercharger. No joy
I successfully ran Ultimatic Jar Tools. No joy. Still 75%.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
not sure
Ultimatic Jar Tools, should only fix, ics and jellybean roms
could try selecting local prop instead of build prop
what happens if you
run 99superchager.sh
don't reboot
rerun supercharger
if you get 100%, then smanager isn't starting at boot
options
see if you have a /data/99SuperCharger.sh , if so try running that one at boot
manually run 99superchager.sh after every reboot
make a Script Manager widget for /data/99SuperCharger.sh on your homescreen and simply launch it after each reboot.
use a different script program
I've tried both build prop and local.prop.
When I run /data/99SuperCharger.sh I'm told no need to rerun. Apparently it's already running.
Maybe I'll reinstall gingerbread 2.3.5 and try again.
Here's what I've done...
1. Wiped back to Factory Reset
2. SBF to Gingerbread 2.3.5.
3. Ran SuperCharger Startup Kit except for BusyBox. BusyBox 1.19.4 was pronounced ok in V6.
4. Ran V6 script.
5. Ran 99SuperCharger.sh with Boot engaged.
Still get: Lose 25% - build/local.prop ADJs NOT Found.
I do not find "BootLog_SuperCharger.log" or "Ran_SuperCharger.log!" to post.
Help. :crying:
"Lose 25% - build/local.prop ADJs NOT Found"
is not a 99SuperCharger.sh issue, the build prop is not getting edited, for some reason
some possible fixes
have voodoo rootkeeper installed? if so try deleting su backup
rooted with magic md5? with version? superuser or SuperSU?
if SuperSU, try un-rooting with Universal UnRoot App
and reroot with older DroidX2_Root_2012.exe
if you originally used /DroidX2_Root_2012.exe"]DroidX2_Root_2012.exe, unroot and try DX2Batchroot_2013.exe
try an older v6 like one posted here http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...harger-98kickasskerneltweaks-zeppelinrox.html Zepplinrox_Scripts.zip (29.2 KB, 1062 views)
try installing eclipse 2.3
Shadow,
No Voodo.
I used DroidX2_Root_2012.exe to unroot.
Haven't tried this one yet: DX2Batchroot_2013.exe.
try an older v6: Good idea.
eclipse 2.3: I may give this a try first unless I shouldn't. Thoughts?
not sure what the problem is, but sometimes system files get stuck.
I think best option is install a rom or restore someone elses nandroid.
can't tell you if eclipse is better for you or not, too many variables, how you use it, apps you install...
but for most people, eclipse is better, than stock
the other option, restoring a nandroid.
I am currently uploading a nandroid of 2.3.5 stock with v6 installed, will post link when it's ready, but will be another 40mins or so (slow connection)
> I am currently uploading a nandroid of 2.3.5 stock with v6 installed
Wow! Thanks!!!
Do I install with RSD Lite software or do I need to download another app?
Restoring a downloaded nandroid
Download nandroid zip file Sendspace link, or DevHost
verify md5 checksum: 7f29ec299e550708e5c051040221a762
unzip with 7zip or other file compression software
move folder 2013-08-17.14.00.17 to Clockworkmod>backup Folder on phone, if you don't have a clockworkmod folder create one, open it, then create a folder named backup in clockworkmod folder
Installing BSR/ Bootstrap recovery
1. Download BSR onto your computer http://www.mediafire.com/download/y19y123n6tauq7s/MOTODX2_Bootstrap_signed.rar
2. unzip it and place it on your external sd card (with your phone in usb mass storage mode.)
3. on your phone go to Settings-->applications and make sure "unknown sources" is checked.
4. use your file manager app to locate it it
5. press it and choose package install, and install it.
6. you will now have an app called system recovery, open it and press "install recovery"
***Important: In order to enter BSR/System recovery YOU MUST BE PLUGGED INTO A WAll CHARGER, not the computer or anything else, A WALL CHARGER***
restore a backup
1. Once you are sure you are plugged into a wall charger press "Recovery Mode" inside the system recovery app and in a few seconds your phone should reboot into the recovery menu.
2. Once you are in the recovery menu press volume down 6 times and "backup & restore" should be selected. Press the power button on top of your phone to select it.
3. select restore
4. select where the clockworkmod folder is, external or internal, then select 2013-08-17.14.00.17
5. confirm restore, yes
6. After the restore is complete you should be back at the original bsr menu and "Reboot System Now" should be highlighted. Select it.
7. You have just successfully restored a nandroid.
Shadow,
I'm so proud of myself. With your excellent instructions, I've restored a nandroid!
I opened V6 and indeed it was working at 100%. Several features were not activated; so, I turned them on. I suspect you already know what happened. I bricked my phone. I think my version of V6, BlackDog is not the same as the one on the nandroid. Or my old backup data files on the SD card caused problems.
I decided to experiment. I SBF'd back to 2.3.5 and installed Eclipse as you suggested. How nice! I love it. It's running perfectly.
I attempted to install V6 with Eclipse. Nothing would install.
I'm enjoying Eclipse so much I may just leave things as they are... unless I get the experimental bug and play around with CM7. I understand I'll have to SBF back to 2.3.4. Who knows. I may even restore back to the nandroid.
Thanks for all your help!

best to only use the RC versions, I may need to make a note, for others, to use the same v6 version.

could be either or neither, not a bad idea to backup data on sd card and format
what speed class is the sd card? it's the number on the card in the C, or if it's a UHS-1, it will have a U with a 1 in it.

some of the Droid X2s are glitchy and just will not do some things
I may upload a eclipse nandroid, that has v6 installed, depends on how you use the device, if v6 helps or not.
After a while any rom will become less responsive, just the limitation of the phone and software we have to work with.
how long that will take varies from user to user, weeks or months.
When that happens best option is restore a known good nandroid or reinstall the rom.
eclipse 2.3 with v6 installed nandroid.rar
included V6_SuperCharger folder needed on sd card to uninstall.
Shadow...
I have the file. Thanks!
It may be a while before I can work with it. I'm kinda swamped right now.
I'll keep you posted.
Shadow,
Where should I put "V6_SuperCharger"?
On the internal SD card, should already have one, just rename the old one, or delete it.
