Possible Brick. How can i make download mode work? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Samsung wont boot past VIBRANT screen.
I have access to both Download mode and recovery mode.
In recovery i have stock recovery and when i try to put ClockWordmod via reinstall packages it just restarts to recovery mode.
I have access to download mode but my computer doesnt prompt me and there is no icon for my samsung galaxy s in "devices with removable storage"
I want to flash Odin or Bionix on top of it, but i dont seem to have the option.
Any one help?
Update:
It previously had Bionix 1.7 , but when i tried installing Bionix 1.8 the case along with the battery fell.
So it does not boot up

So you can get your phone into Download mode? (Yellow Triangle with an android digging and the words "Downloading, do not turn off target"?)

yeah the yellow icon does not install what ever drivers are needed for my Windows 7 to know im connnected. i do get a sound though

Does anyone have any ideas???

This thread contains drivers, and everything you'll need to get odin working. Before doing anything make sure you read up on ODIN. Just take a deep breath, and don't rush anything or you'll screw up your phone. Read, then read some more, then triple check. Make sure you have drivers installed, odin, tar file (rom), pit file, and patience.

Thanks Paging I am trying it right now. I'll tell you how it went. Been stuck for a while on Set PIT.

It won't show up as a device with removable storage when it's in Download Mode. If it's working properly it will show up on a COM port in Odin (in a yellow box toward the top left).

ODIN won't pick up vibrant in download mode

Hey everyone-
I'm trying to ODIN my vibrant back to stock from eugene373's froyo rom, the one with latest one (r3 i think) with the supposedly working clockwork mod (it didn't for me :-/). Anyway, I'm able to get the phone into download mode ONLY by pushing power on and holding volume -, I've already tried turning it off and plugging in the cable and it doesn't work for some reason, but whenever it enters download mode ODIN doesn't seem to pick it up. Oddly enough, ODIN will pick up my vibrant as COM6 when it's powered on, but that's only time I can get it to work. And my vibrant IS NOT hardware locked. Thanks for any help in advance.

Just FYI check to make sure, you swtich USB ports on the PC and also make sure you have all the right drivers installed. Looking at the pics, I see that you are not selecting the rite options. All you need is the PIT & the PDA files selected.

yeah I tried that to, didn't work. I used the very first JFD firmware from the backup firmware thread and the .512 pit file as well and that was it, and for some reason ODIN still wouldn't pick up my vibrant. fyi, i was actually able to get it to flash to an odin copy of JI8 a couple hours ago, but now I keep getting a bunch of FC's and ODIN yet again isn't sensing the vibrant in download mode.

Sorry to break it to you but its most likely an issue with your computer. Try going to the local library and use one of theirs.
Try getting into download mode first than starting up Odin. If that doesn't work try it in reverse.
Just my .02, but I noticed that if I have Kies open, Odin wont see my Vibrant... Dont know if that is the cause of your problem or that you even have Kies at all.
I'm going to go with make sure you have the correct drivers installed.
If you don't have the drivers
Hit up this thread for the drivers.

Agreed. I have to do this every time, but it also works every time. As soon as I plug the USB back in Odin will show a com port has been connected, and then I'm good to go with the flashing. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit.

I have also had success with this method. Closing odin and reopening before I re plug is what I have done and have had no issues. Vista Ultimate 64.
I need help. My vibrant is soft bricked. I can access 2e recovery but cannot get into CWM at all. I dont even have the update.zip in my internal. I can get into download mode but odin will not recognize my device. (believe me when I tell you Ive tried it all on multiple computers using different cables, usb slots, etc.). I actually fell asleep at my desk last night trying it all. My question is, can I somehow access the internal storage of my vibrant through my pc possibly ? In order to place the cwm update.zip in the root folder then enabling me to "reinstall packages" through 2e recovery ?
Any help is much appreciated. This is killing me.

I gotta get my phone on a charger, so will have to wait and search for the post in a little while, but another person had this issue, and had luck with a windows software that was like an android file explorer or something. Was able to save all his pictures and files. Surely you could also use it to transfer update.zip back to the internal sd.
I will look for that post and get back to you.
Update: this is the thread I was referring to. Hope this helps. I haven't used it, but if it can copy files from the internal, theres the chance it will copy files TO the internal... Good luck!

REPARTITIONING ISSUE WITH HEIMDALL 1.3.0
Heimdall currently has an issue with repartitioning. 99% of the time you will not need to repartition. Failure to follow these directions can possibly lead to bricking:
Do not flash bootloaders if you see this message:
Local and device PIT files don't match and repartition wasn't specified!
This message means your partition tables do not match the firmware.
You will need to use Linux to repartition with this firmware package. Install Ubuntu. In Linux, you can copy-pasta this into the terminal to correct the repartitioning problem and then flash bootloaders. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17485056&postcount=23

ok i have a pretty big problem... i tryed to flash axura 2.2 and when i did it got an error on line 13 so i restarted my phone thinking it was going to be ok but stayed on the vibrant startup page...... now im trying to do odin but when i go to the download setup by holding down the 2 volume buttons on usb hookup nothing happens my computer wwill recognize it but says its and unknown device and i have downloaded the driver numerous times and odin still cant find my device so i can put my vibrant back to stock...... what im getting at is does anyone know how to get odin to reconize my phone.....or is there another way to load any type of rom to where i can go in and actually use my phone...
thanks,
Zach
Had the same issue once take the sd card and sim card out. Open odin before you connect your phone. With the phone off connect it to your pc and press and hold both the volume up and down. That should get you to the download screen. Make sure you open odin before you get the download screen or it will get hung up during flash

Did you install adb on the computer?, did you install the drivers for your phone?
Download Mode:
Power off phone, take out battery.
On PC, open ODIN and plug USB into PC (not the phone)
Put battery back in phone
Hold both volume keys... keep them held down and plug USB into phone
After MAYBE a second you should be in download mode.
load the pit and tar files and click start.
In my Noob guide I have this... you may want to try the ALT METHOD as this will give you root, JK2 froyo and the 2e recovery...
from that point, download Axura 2.2 to your PC, check the MD5 sum (also in the guide) to make sure its a good download, then move it to your internal so it looks like this:
sdcard/axura2.2
download rom manager, flash clockwork recovery, reboot into clockwork.
make a backup (so you have a stock you can always go back to)
flash the rom, reboot.
enjoy.
whats adb and also what is the alt method?
^ I referened the Noob guide in my signature for the ALT METHOD (the files to get froyo and root)... which you can backup and then flash axura 2.2 over.
ADB is only needed if you can't get into download mode. From your first post, you were not trying correctly... you should be able to get into download mode by following my previous post.
odin can still not recognize it maybe my phone isnt going into full download mode... should i just do adb... also can i load a whole rom through adb?
ok kies didnt work .... i didnt recognize it...... im trying to do it the adb way but when i put adb devices it still cant find it... i think my phone doesnt have debugging on....but i have no way to turn it on i just need to have the debugging and mass storage on and it should work i just dont know how to do that when i cant even get into my phone

Stock

How do I take my Vibrant that has Bionix on it and return it to factory set, as in when i got it in the box? The whole ODIN isn't working for me. I have the drivers installed on my comp, but when i turn the phone off, it doesn't recognize it. :/
Just find a stock flashable file and flash it through clockwork
U can either keep trying cuz odins a ***** sometimes or try heimdall. I gotta try 5 to 6 times for my laptop to recognize my phone and its drivers. Personally ive never used heimdall but heard its more consistant than odin
Currently running ______________! (<----Insert Rom Name Here)
I can't seem to find one. :/
I would need the stock kernel either?
I have been searching for days.
What do you mean when you turn the phone off? It has to be in download mode in order for it to work, and of that's what you meant and its not being recognized by windows then let me know. I can help you with that.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using Tapatalk
I turn it off to enter download mode (Sorry if i was a bit unclear) I have installed the drivers and it hasn't worked. :/
You doing this on windows? And is it safe to assume you have all the files you need for Odin already? (tar and pit files)
Correct, I followed the guide that was posted and it didn't recognize the fact that I was in download mode on odin. It said that it completed 0/0 threads.
Reboot machine
Right click the Odin shortcut and "run as administrator"
Plug the USB cord into the computer
Remove the battery from your phone, and then plug the USB cord into the phone.
Put the battery back into the phone, and you should then be in download mode.
Those steps worked for me bc like you I was having huge issues getting my pc to recognize the phone. Let me know if that doesnt work.
Also, make sure your Windows Device Manager doesnt have an issue with your phone. Once you open it, it should jump out at you if you do.
If odin isn't working for you, you could use the alternative, Heimdall. The vibrant bible tells you all you need to know. good luck.

I have been able to do this on my wife's phone pretty easy and all I do it find a copy if CWM recovery (often called CWM all), a copy of update.zip, and the latest version if Odin. Use your factory USB cord and plug your phone into your PC. Let it install all the drivers. Once I stalled open your phone and mount the SD card so you can see it as a hard drive. Place the update.zip file on the SD card, but not in any folder. From there unhook your phone and power it down. Remove the battery and start Odin. Plug your USB part of the phone cord into the PC (don't connect it to the phone yet). Hold down the volume down button and power button while connecting the phone cord to the phone. You will see a yellow triangle and Droid on the screen. From there click the PDA button and find the CWM file you downloaded. Click start and let it do its thing. The phone will power down and you can then replace the battery and start your phone. I usually let my phone power up and then power it down again. After it is off you will then need to hold the volume up, volume down, and power button to boot into recovery. Once in Recovery you can choose the option to install update.zip. Let it do its thing and then reboot the phone. You should be good to go.

Hi Guys-
I'm having a problem with my Samsung Fascinate as well. Its currently running Gingerbread 2.3.5 build EH03. I had my phone flashed to MetroPCS a couple of days ago with Talk/Text only. Now I'm trying to root my phone using Odin. I want to install CyanogenMod, because I ran it on my old HTC Hero and was satisfied with it.
The problem is that my phone will not mount as a USB Storage. I'm using a Mac, however I have Parallels running Windows XP SP3. I have installed the Samsung drivers from the Samsung website and the drivers do show up in the device manager, but it still doesn't mount as a USB storage device in Windows. On the phone I receive the notification that its USB Connected - select to copy files to/from your computer. But, again nothing happens when I select it.
Whenever I plug my phone in the USB port Odin recognizes it, but when I put the phone into download mode it doesn't show up in Odin. I've also tried to see if it shows up using ADB from the Android SDK. Its not listed as a device when I run the command adb devices.
Is there anyway to root the phone if its not showing up in Odin when its download mode?

I think you can root the phone without having to flash CWM recovery, but it does require ADB so I don't know if that would be any help. FWIW, I have a mac too, and haven't had any luck using heimdall (it doesn't recognize the device), although I haven't tried any sort of VM or anything like crossover to use odin on it. I've just accepted using a windows machine when odin is required
Does your ADB work with other devices? For whatever reason, I couldn't get it working with the fascinate, then I tried it a few days ago and it worked all of a sudden. Another workaround is to use the wirelessADB app from the market. If you search for "galaxy s mac" you'll see that you're unfortunately definitely not alone in having connectivity issues with OSX.

very true...ADB is another option to root, but I never recomend it because most folks will have trouble using it....dont mean the in a condescending way, just sayin.
For sure, just thought I would throw it out there. Looks fairly simple actually from the guide nitsuj17 posted in the OP of the EH03 odin/heimdall package, well maybe straightforward would be a better word, just since it's laid out step-by-step.
I actually had problems using cwm... it failed to flash the su.zip properly. So I used the latest version of GeeWiz recovery on stock EH03. Worked fine. Roots every time. #hopethathelps

Hi, guys new to rooting and custom roms but ive hit a snag.

all i want to be able to do is put ics with very few apps and overclock my cpu
Any help would be great
Samsung fascinate running android2.3.5 with superuser
thx
1. You don't need to be root first before flashing roms.
2. It sounds like you're possibly booting into the stock recovery.
If you want to flash ICS, just follow the steps in that section 3 of the guide you've already been using.
I tried but it failed on step 9/10
So you're saying that it fails after you press start in odin (flashing the stock EH03 package)? What error are you getting and when exactly is it happening?
If you're not on any rom and just on stock EH03, I'd think you should be able to just odin the CWM recovery and install ICS from there.
not sure what the exact message was but yes after i hit start it initalized did nothing for about 3 minutes of the five and got a fail message
And you're sure you're using the correct files and selecting the right things in odin? Make sure the stock EH03 rom is in the PDA section, the atlas 2.2 file for PIT, and repartition is checked. Could possibly be a bad download too, I'd maybe try redownloading the files and trying again. Also, are you using Odin 1.3 that was linked in the guide?
Alternatively, you could just try flashing the CWM4 fixed for CM7 in odin, then three-finger into recovery and flash ICS from there.
Oh and just making sure you're getting into download mode the right way, I personally pull the battery, that way it doesn't reboot after you flash whatever it is you're flashing. If none of that works, I'd try a different USB port/cable. Is odin recognizing the device properly?

Help Me Please.

Uh hi.
I'm a herp.
So I may have accidently tried to root and flash my friend's Samsung Vibrant. It was going smoohtly but now, I'm all sorts of messed up.
The problem: I may have used the wrong kernel (zImage) when using heimdall-frontend (which I downloaded from xda). This is causing the phone to power on; it shows the Samsung Galaxy S 4g load screen, then Overstock, then the T-Mo logo sign (with the music), and then a longer Galaxy S load screen. After the load screen, the screen goes completely black, but all the touch buttons light up. Once like this, I can turn it off, and make it go back into recovery mode and also download mode.
Please help. I've been trying to solve this with my friend for about.. 4 hours.
P.S. I've looked up all the guides for using ODIN to get back to JFS, none works due to the reason that when I put it back into download mode, the computer does not recognize it. But it does at the same time. (it shows the "safetly remove hardware" and says that is an "USB mass storage device" ((but does not appear in "My Computer" when in the unresponsive screen-- but when in the download screen, it shows the same thing, only labeled "SAMSUNG USB Composite Device", which also cannot be accessed through "My Computer")
P.P.S. I'm sure it is a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, exclusive from T-Mobile. My computer is Windows Vista 32-bit, and I have as many Samsung drivers as humanly possible when it comes to the Vibrant.
Can anyone help a poor fool?
Try this, get in to download mode, open Odin, then disconnect the usb cable, then reconnect the usb cable and Odin should recognize it then. Good luck!
Using XDA premium, you should be too!

Try this, get in to download mode, open Odin, then disconnect the usb cable, then reconnect the usb cable and Odin should recognize it then. Good luck!

Sorry. That did not work. It just doesn't recognize it in ODIN when in download mode. My computer doesn't even see it. But it does say "Safely Remove Hardware" -- "SAMSUNG USB Composite Device"
Sounds really odd. Do you have any roms you can try reflashing from recovery?

Uh hi.

Sounds like you used the wrong odin files. if your screen is showing a galaxy s 4g logo then you must have mistakenly flashed a galaxy s 4g odin/heimdall package. on the back of your phone what is the model number. What on earth is JFS? ive heard of JFD which is the stock firmware that the phone shipped with.
If you flashed the wrong bootloader you are more or less stuck between a rock and a hardplace and will require a jtag. now the fact that teh screen does turn on is a good thing.
You need to keep trying to get it into download mode maybe try using a jig. Once youve gotten it into download mode try every single usb port you can find on your pc. When i need to odin i need to use one of my usb ports on the rear io panel none of the others will work. Once you get odin running and recognizing your device use the files posted in my sig as the odin files. any others and i cant help you cuz i dont know what your source is. Odin should be able to recover your device if it is still booting to the splash screen.
If for whatever reason you cant boot into download mode but can get into recovery here is what you do: make sure you have the android SDK installed (dont know what that is go here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html and follow their directions) then open up command prompt while in recovery type the following command: adb reboot bootloader this should put you into download mode. If nothing ive mentioned works you may require a JTAG there is a company called MOBILETECHVIDEOS (http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/) that has a JTAG service.
Good luck
-Cheers
