[Q] Nandroid backup.... - Fascinate Android Development

WARNING: im a noob
sooooo... i rooted my phone and everyone says that there is an option in recovery mode to do nandroid backup and i have no option like that.
when i go into recovery it has:
1. Reboot
2. Flash update.zip
3. Wipe data/factory reset
4. wipe cache partition
how do i do a nandroid backup?

Select fladh update and it will take u to clockwork mod recovery if you installed it. That is where nandroid is located. If you havent installed it get rom manager from market and install recovery from it

[HOW-TO] backup and restore using nandroid

ok guys, here we are again.. you're wanting to backup your phone for if you want to try a test rom, or just to have a backup in case something goes wrong. this tut will show you how! I will also explain how to restore your phone to a backup you've previously made. it is also possible to backup/restore using rom manager but this is the harder way.. not too hard once you figure it out, but thats all opinion
Pre Requirements:
1.) be rooted
2.) have clockwork recovery installed
3.) not a necessity, but it DEFINITELY helps to have the engineering build installed at least once
BACKUP STEPS:
1.) boot into clockwork recovery mode
2.) scroll down to nandroid and select
3.) click backup
4.) it will now automatically backup your ENTIRE PHONE.. this includes your contacts, messages, emails, everything you have on the phone prior to booting into recovery. you will see a yellow bar at the bottom that shows progress
5.) REBOOT!
6.) there is no step 6... you're done
RESTORE STEPS:
1.)boot into clockwork recovery mode
2.) scroll down to nandroid and select
3.) scroll down to restore and select
4.) scroll to your desired restore nandroid and select
5.) scroll to yes and select
6.) it will now auto restore your backup and everything in it. when done it will tell you DONE!
7.) reboot and you're done!
well there ya go guys, one (two?) more tut(s) done and have fun be safe and remember to wipe if you're ever scared you have a boot loop
I actually do have a specific question about these nandroid backups. If I backup, then flash a "updated" ROM (update to an existing one already installed), and THEN do a restore, does the restore take me back to the previous version of the ROM? I've never used the nandroid backups as I usually never have a need to.
the restore takes your phone back to exactly how it was when you performed the backup
Gotcha, so if you backup, wipe, and then update a ROM, you cannot expect to be able to use your nandroid backup to restore anything you had previously, unless you wanted to go back to the ROMs previous version... gotcha.
where are these backups stored?
I think it's /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/[BackupDate]/
is it safe to remove them from the sdcard & store for safekeeping until needed & replace in same location?
yep, sure is!
Is it necessary to perform a wipe before restoring, if you currently have a different ROM than what is being restored? Or does nandroid wipe for you?

no, nandroid doesnt wipe for you. i suggest always wiping if you're changing roms
hi im kinda new to this, but I rooted my slide using the tuts from droiddog.com and here. Got mostly everything working but when I try to backup my current rom clockwork crashes and it doesn't take me to recovery and just reboots the phone. Ive tried clearing the download cashe and downloading an older recovery but nothing seems to work. I basically cant boot into recovery to make backups or flash any roms. any suggestions on what else I could try.
I gave this explination of a nandroid to a friend of mine today. It will act like a time machine and put your device back exactly as it was when you did the backup. Now if you need an explination like that, you realy should not be messing with your phone that way.
freeze
hi
i have a problem. when i try to restore my backup. everything looks fine. but when restoring finish and reboot my phone screen is freezing on htc logo. what can i do?
sorry for my bad english!
Just wait it takes a while to boot sometimes, treat it like you would treat a new ROM being flashed.
i need to wipe data/factory reset or?
ok
i wipe data.. restore backup from nandroid.. reboot phone and i waiting almost 30 min and screen still show only htc logo..
I have copied the nandroid backups on my SD card
but in recovery mode, it is not showing any nandroid backup file ?

is it in the sd\clockworkmod\backup folder??
Hello,
I have a question about Nandroid backups using CWM...I read on some forum that...the backup and the installed version of CWM recovery should match to make it work..I.e If I took the backup using CWM version 5.0.0.0 I have to use the same CWM recovery version to restore the ROM and I can not restore nandroid backup using the later version lets say 5.0.1.5 of CWM...is it true?
Thanks..
I kinda doubt that. Itd be much more likely that a nandroid created by 5.0 couldnt be used by an earlier version. I doubt that is true either, just more likely than the other way around.
Nothing wrong with waiting for better confirmation than mine, but if it were an issue I think wed have heard a lot more about it by now.

A little confused about root/custom ROM installation

I am comfortable with any of the steps that need to be taken to gain root and install custom ROMs I just had a simple question. If I am starting off with a completely stock FroYo ROM can I just ODIN CWM recovery and flash a rooted custom ROM and I'm done? Or do I need to go through the process of rooting first?(flashing superuser and busybox through CWMR)
I have seen different answers after searching for a while.
Thanks.
I know when i first did mine i flashed Super clean using Odin. but alot of the newer roms are CWM flash not Odin
This is what i would do, find a rom you want, download it and place it on your sdcard.
Root and flash cwm via Odin using the PDA button.
Boot to cwm and create a backup,
Once backup is complete ,
Perform, wipe cache, dalvik cache, and factory reset. Then navigate to "install zip from sdcard" locate the rom you just downloaded, flash it. Let it boot.
Once booted all the way up, reboot to recovery and create a new backup. If you chose a voodoo rom disable voodoo, let the phone reboot again fully, the reboot to recovery and create a backup.
When the new backup is finished reboot the phone again.
Once booted backup, remove the lagfix and reboot again.
Find a theme and your good to go.

Also MAKE SURE YOU RENAME YOUR BACKUPS, so you don't lose your stock backup.

[Q] 2.3.5 with KI3 . Unable to install CM7

Hi,
Currently using latest firmware KI3 with root.
I'm able to use CWM, backup, install zips, everything.
However, if i install a ROM trough a ZIP, i get a boot loop.
Only way to get back the phone, it's to install via ODIN with latest KI3.
Even tried with Litening Rom, and got the boot loop.
Any ideas ?
I was very keen to return to CM7.
Tx in advance.
Did you exactly what's mentioned here?
Install via ClockworkMod (do not use ROMManager for initial install):
Make sure you're running a rooted device.
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1118693)
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition) - do it for real.
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery.
Do not reboot! We mean it - do nothing except choose zip and continue next step (if you come back to us with permission issues in install, we will know you did not read the directions and will call you an idiot). If it just plain hangs, reboot directly back into ClockworkMod recovery and continue at the next step.
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery, again (due to a bug in the install).
Reboot
Install the Google Addon through ROMManager which is easiest, but you can
download the gapps.zip and install via ClockworkMod recovery instead.

Did you try flashing a old stock ROM like KH3, root it then try from this base?
I went from Villain ROM 2.3.5 to CyanogenMOD without any problems.
It's essential that you flash CyanogenMOD !TWICE! in a row when you're coming from a stock ROM.
Thanks.
Gonna check, as soon as i'm @ 127.0.0.1
Same behaviour, back to boot loop.
Tanx anyway!
I had a similar problem so here goes my help.
Cf root kernel uses a modified version of CWM that isn't compatible with CM7 or something like that. So what I did was flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118693. Get the kernel with CWM 5.x.y.z With that I got a compatible version of CWM and from there I flashed CM7. It is important that you do a full wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, format \system, everything so you don't get any trouble. THen you flash the CM7 zip file, when tha t is done, flash the zip again for a second time (don't reboot just do it after the first flash). After that reboot. That worked for me at least.
A tip: If you can't reboot your phone and you have no ROM zip file to flash via CWM you can mount usb storage from CWM for putting the ROM in sd card and flash with CWM. That way you don't have to use ODIN to recover.
Tanx Tomas.
Tried with CWM 5.x.y.z and upon "WIPE" always got an error for mounting partitions.
Could't mount CACHE, SDCARD .....
Tx anyway.
Back to ODIN, back to stock 2.3.5
PS : I have to get a JIG to reset ...

[Q] (HELP ME) SGS+ stuck in cwm recovery!

I got a problem whit my sgs+. It doesnt go anywheare from cwm 5.504. I tried to install CyanogenMod 9 and it actually installed but when i reboot it does the reboot and comes back to CWM. I followed thease intructions:
Installation:
Back up your apps with TitaniumBackup. Backup your SMS with SMS Backup & Restore and your call logs with Call log Backup & Restore. Export your contacts to a .vcf file.
First a special version of CWM recovery is needed, FeaMod does not work because it does not set partition sizes for CyanogenMod 9 correctly. The new recovery can restore FeaMod Recovery backups in case you want to return to one later. There are many ways how to install the recovery, choose one:
Flash CWM5504-CM9-recovery.zip inside FeaMod (boot into recovery, apply update from sdcard) or stock recovery
or use Quickflasher from broodplank:
Connect phone via USB, start sgsflasher_x86.exe, activate "Flash a new Recovery", select the recovery.img and press "Start Now".
or use Odin to flash recovery-clockwork-5.5.0.4-ariesve.tar.md5 as One Package using the regular AriesVE.ops (Tutorial)
or flash recovery.img using the command line/adb by putting it on your sdcard and executing the commands:
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p13
CyanogenMod9 comes as a zip that is installed inside recovery. Download cm-9-20121023-EXPERIMENTAL-ariesve-beta3.zip and put it on your sdcard.
Reboot into CWM Recovery
Perform a backup!
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe Cache partition
Advanced > Wipe dalvik cache
Install zip from sdcard (choose cm-9-20121023-EXPERIMENTAL-ariesve-beta3.zip)
.........................................................................................
So the .zip file seesms to install but my phone doesnt open up whit cyancolen or the stock rom... In the recowery menus i can do anythin i want but i think i dont do the righy things so could someone help me?
thanks
Try clearing cache and dslvik cache in recovery and then reboot. . .

Hi, finlandpetu, I've had the same Problem, and I think you have to flash a new Bootloader. Look at this Thread. :good:

[Q] Android Revolution HD-SGS3 21.1

Hi
Can Android Revolution HD-SGS3 be installed with CWM - update flash zip file?
After flashing is the phone rooted?
What will happen to my personal configuration ( contacts, call list......)?
The only way to install it is via CWM. Just make sure it's CWM and not stock recovery.
It'll be rooted, yes.
You'll need to do a data wipe from recovery after or before installing, it will wipe all the apps and settings
Glebun Thanks for reply.
So I have to install all my App once more or in other words I have to start again?
yes, or you can back it all up with Titanium Backup.
And there's a "thanks" button, FYI
