Hi Guys,
First post here.
I've started installing VillainRom 1.4 following the instructions contained in the official thread in the Dev Forum.
However, having selected to flash the zip file in CWM and watched the installation process start, my screen has now been displaying the blinking VillainRom logo for about 45 minutes. Is this normal or has something gone wrong?!
I plugged the phone into the mains right after the logo first showed up. Would this have made a difference?

If your coming from a stock ROM you need to perform a full wipe in CWM before flashing.
Look through the options in recovery, wipe your data then reflash the ROM for good measure.
All should be fine....

So should I just turn it off, boot in recovery and look for the wipe option, wipe the phone, then restart the installation process?
Yep, boot into recovery then select;
"Wipe Data/Factory Reset"
"Wipe Cache Partition"
"Advanced>Wipe Dalvik Cache"
Then flash the rom again.(This step may not be required, but it cant hurt).

One further question.
I've got VillainRom successfully installed now, but when I attempt to restore the apps and data that I backed up using Titanium Backup my phone reverts to it's pre-Villain state.
Is there anyway to restore my data but keep VillainRom? Am I being completely dense?!

That sounds strange. Titanium backup in itself cannot "revert" you to the previous ROM. That's not possible
What do you mean by its pre-villain state by the way?
When I move between different editions of the ROM, I do a titanium backup via the app. I then reinstall the ROM, and select some apps to restore. I am still running the same ROM (confirm via Menu > settings > about, and scroll to the bottom. It should show as VillainROM 1.4.0.

By pre-villain state I mean the stock firmware that came with the phone. I looked at the settings and it put me back onto the original firmware.
This was also confirmed because after installing VillainRom, restoring and then installing VillainTweaks, VTweaks told me it couldn't function because VillainRom wasn't installed.
From your reply I think the mistake I might have made was to restore from CWM rather than re-downloading Titanium Backup and restoring through that. Would that be correct?

The only option you have is to boot back into recovery and restore your last backup. If recovery is unavailable you'll have to use flashtool to flash a complete firmware package, root, install XRecovery and then restore your backup. If it's a 2.3 backup make sure that you're running baseband .71.

What if I do not have a backup inside recovery..
Does that mean I have to Repair my phone using SEUS and lose everything?~~
PS. I am running 2.3.3 Stock FW

If you can get into recovery try this..... Do a backup first and then do a reinstall your current ROM. After you've done that do an advanced restore of your data and cache partitions from the backup you just made.
This should get you back to your ROM's basic system partition with your current data and cache. If everything works OK, you shouldn't even see any differences.

By "reinstall your current ROM", you mean reinstalling the stock SEUS ROM right?
I just made a backup inside recovery, I will go ahead and reinstall my phone now.
When I restore, are the texts, phonebook etc... being restored from recovery's backup? =) or will i lose those?~

I mean whatever rom you were using when you installed that zip that caused the problem. It actually should still be on your SD card as a Zip unless you removed it after you flashed it.
When you restore data you'll get everything back apps, texts, contacts, history etc.....

Oh, I wasn't trying to install a rom, i was trying to install this on a SE stock 2.3

After you get back to your stock Rom and have root / XRecovery, just restore data and cache. Whatever you do, don't restore system or you'll have to start over

Hello All
Spent the last few weeks looking at custom roms for the Galaxy SII and hope to install one soon.
My phone is already rooted and I use Titanium backup pro to do a backup of all my app and system data.
Once my new rom is installed I would like to restore my phone back to a state where it has my apps and information e.g. text messages, whats app contacts etc I already use backup to gmail and sync my contacts with my google account so not too worried about this.
Any suggestions on things I should backup before I install. Is it possible to install a custom rom and preserve the data?? I doubt not but thought I would ask.
I installed a custom rom when I had a HTC Desire and that was pretty much straightforward. Seems ever easier on the SII but are there any gotchas I should be aware of?

Installing a custom ROM whilst keeping you current System's "state" is possible in theory. I absolutely don't recommend it, though.
In custom ROMs, there's often a lot of changes compared to an original ROM. That means you CAN use Titanium Backup, etc., but then errors and FCs might happen. Even when installing a new custom ROM over another, it's ALWAYS better to wipe everything and re- download your Apps from the market (If you have the option ticked, your device will even reinstall all apps automatically after you logged in with your Gmail-Account... )
So, in a nutshell, I'd highly recommend not to restore old saved settings, Apps, or anything else.
I use to backup apps /w data with titanium backup and sms with a sms backup app. I has worked fin every time. I do not recommend to backup settings though.

If your phone is rooted and you have cwm recovery, I would suggest you boot into recovery and backup that way. At least if you aren't happy with the custom rom you can restore the backup and your phone will be exactly like it was before.
BTW, I've rarely had problems restoring user apps and data on new roms via titanium. Generally system apps etc give you errors.
For contacts I backup to SD card, and for SMS, apns, bookmarks and call logs I use market apps.
Also, I would suggest a no-wipe custom rom because most data is preserved anyway. They generally recommend wiping this or that first but I never do and havent had many problems in the past.

I have tried to backup using the Nandroid backup. I have ROM manager installed and if I try to reboot into recovery or create a backup it doesnt successfully work.
It comes up with an error when in recovery which says
'failed to verify whole-file signature'
signature verification failed.
Please help.

Don't use rom manager. Reboot into recovery manually using the 3 button method : volume up + power + home.
If you don't see backup there you don't have cwm recovery (I suspect you don't). I would recommend then to flash cf-root via Odin to get it.
Edit: rom manager on its own will not give you cwm as it can't flash it on a stock kernal. You need a custom kernal with the required recovery - 2e I think. So flash cf-root.

Am sorry if am posting this question in the wrong area but i cant post anything in the development section yet
I am trying to flash a new ROM (checkROM rev HD3.1.1) and I am currently using a custom ROM (CM7.1). In CWM 5.0.2.7 I see a lot of wipe options and don't really know which one i should do. Correct me if am wrong please, but i should do 'wipe data/factory reset' and 'wipe cache partition' from the main menu, and 'wipe dalvik cache' 'wipe battery stats' from the 'advanced menu'?
what about all the format (ie, format data/ format cache/ etc.) option in 'mounts and storage' menu, is this for an external sd-card?

Thanks for that. Any instructions on how I would go about doing this flash cf-root. I dont really get that if I be honest.
All I can tell you is recently I upgraded to 2.3.5 via kies for my galaxy S 2. I then had to re-root the phonea and now I am runnin the following:
Android version - 2.3.5
Baseband version - I9100XXKI4
Kernel version - 2.6.35.7-i9100XWKDD-CL161513
build number - gingerbread.XWKJ1
When I looked at all the different flash cf-root options I didnt know which one was the one I should use for my phone. The process within Odin I'm fine with...

Last night, I installed TW 4.5/TW Manager. I did a ClockworkMod backup first. I decided to restore it.
However, after restoration, the phone is in a factory state. Save for my lock pattern, which it remembered, the phone is in first-run setup mode, all my home screen layouts are gone, all my apps are not in the aop drawer except those the G2 ships with. Contents of the virtual SD card like photos are still there.
I tried restoring my only other CWM backup (a November backup that previously *restored ok* to undo a MIUI test, for example), but this, too, now boots in to the same state.
What has gone wrong here?
And is there any way of getting back the system that I assume/d is/was in the CWM backup files?
If I can't guarantee I can restore a CWM backup, it makes the world a very scary place to be.

Wiped data, Wiped cache, Restored backup - still doesn't retrieve the actual backup.
Now wiped again. In Advanced Restore, what should I do?

This doesn't work either.
I had the same trouble early last month; even after a restore it was pretty much factory settings and I had to put everything back myself.
It was very irritating as I'd taken the precaution of making a backup but it still didn't work. I've pretty much recovered everything I needed to since then, though.
What excactly did you do prior to the restoring? Did you flash a new rom? If yes, what was your previous rom? Or is TW4.5 an app of some kind?

Installed TouchWiz 4.5, a modified TouchWiz launcher (left it alongside TouchWiz, set no default - home button press asked for confirmation of home screen each time)
TW4.5 comes with the TW4Manager app for controlling settings.
I downloaded the Suava theme for use with TW 4.5.
Before any of that, I made a CWM backup. Then I did the above. Now the backup (and even a backup which restored perfectly a month ago) will not restore to anything but factory new state.
And you are not getting an error message of any kind? How long does it take to restore? What is the size of the backup?

The last thing I can think of is flashing an old stock rom and then rooting it with CF-Root. Then you have an older version of CWM.
A stock rom like KE2. Then try to restore.
If that does not work find a rom which has the latest CMW. Version 5 I believe. Then try restoring it.

Hmm, are you talking about kernel?
If I'm correctly reading my rough notes from my rooting and tinkering, then my original kernel was KF3, I rooted in mid-October with an insecure equivalent (KF3) (CF-Root method), but quickly upgraded through Kies... I now have kernel XWKI4 (baseband XXKI1, build KI4).
So I moved from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4.
BUT - the backup and restore I did with CWM under the current system as recently as two weeks ago in November worked fine.

So, you're saying there - you think a newer version of CWM might have eliminated a bug or something?
Might I find any FURTHER problems by changing the ROM and trying to restore?

I really don't know. But I think it's worth the effort determining of your CWM is still functioning properly.
You can also try just flashing the KI4 CF-root kernel, then boot in recovery and then try to restore.
Make sure you have important stuff backuped of course
If you can boot to working phone backup data and copy clockwork mod folder to PC .
Then try posted below . boots to working phone root it with CWM and root copy clockwork folder back then try restore nandroid backup .#
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode

So let me clarify what you're essentially suggesting...
Store my ClockworkMod safely on the PC
Wipe cache, data, system and SD card in Recovery Mode
"Install correct firmware"
Then put the backup file back and try restoring
What do you mean by "correct firmware"?...
I currently have Baseband XXKI1, Kernel XWKI4, Build XWKI4. That is the firmware with which I made the backup. (I guess that's KI4?)
But the firmware I originally rooted with CWM was PDA: KF3, PHONE: KE7, CSC: KD1 (XEU). (I guess that was KF3?)
What's the aim of this here and what's the source of the info?

And how about in the advice the previous correspondent gave, to reinstall kernel/firmware?
I rooted my device using Gingerbreak.
I have 2.2.2 installed out of the box. I installed CWM. I installed busybox.
Busybox failed. I tried all the versions that it contains.
I checked root status, and RootCheckBasic says I'm rooted.
I installed Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. It will not reboot to CWM.
It only reboots to the standard Android recovery.
I'm trying to install Bumblebee ROM 2.4.
Here are some things I am having issues understanding with it...
Backup current apps and their data with Titanium Backup (available in the Market). Is this required? The phone is new. I have nothing to back up.
Do a nandroid backup in recovery before doing anything else below.
And the nandroid backup is done with CWM? Again CWM won't reboot, only the standard Android recovery boots.
Required if installing BB 2.x for the first time: Wipe. Wipe it all. Data, cache, system, dalvik-cache, sd-ext if you've got it (might need to look under Advanced or Mounts in recovery to do the last two, and while you're there format /system). I assume you wipe it all with CWM while in recovery?
If upgrading from BB 2.3, wipe cache (and only cache) in recovery.
Does not apply to me
If not upgrading from 2.3, install Wiper zip (see below), just to be extra sure that all is wiped. Don't reboot yet. Installing wiper.zip is done by sideloading using adb commands?
Install ROM zip (see below).
I assume this too is done by copying the zip to the external SD, then selecting update from SD card in recovery... right?
Please someone shed some light on this for me.
In standard Android recovery it says e3. I know on my Captivate I had to use Odin to install GB loaders to get it to work.

Try downloading rom manager from the market and use that.

But I don't get the CWM recovery when I reboot into recovery mode.
I get the standard Android recovery

Oh, okay, um... are you using the reboot into recovery option in rom manager right after flashing?

I reboot into recovery through rom manager and get:
Android system recovery <3e>
reboot system now
apply sdcard: update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

After hitting flash clockworkmod recovery, immediately hit reboot recovery
After hitting anything in CWM it did nothing more than reboot into the standard android recovery.
This phone has 2.2.2 on it. Problem? Probably.
I followed instructions at androidcentral and got it to work.

Had a little problem today and needed to activate the phone. BUUUUT......
the rom didn't allow activation.
So I installed Bumblebee. No go.
Then I tried [rom] basic stock rom.
Neither of these will let my phone boot. It gets stuck at boot.
Nothing happens.
I can still boot into Xiona_CWMA. But no roms will work.

Dude i m noob, and i m facing same problem,
I did root with super one click soc, and it is rooted and i am using root needed apps,
But when i m trying to clobk work recovery (i did flashing CWR from rom manager and aft that i select boot from cwr option from rom manager) it just factory reset i did this 3time all time just factory reset, then i again did but while rebooting i click home button so it gave me same option which came to above member said some e3............
And i try to select any option from it with menu button it was not applied, and no use so i removed battry and place again and start then device started dont know more what to do, help

I can flash roms, but nothing happens (bootloop) or the phone comes on and works with a black screen.
I can call my number and can hear the call, but can't see anything.

I believe that may be due to the newer display in your phone (I'm new to this device so I dont know much yet). From the little bit of information I've gathered, devices manufactured recently have a different display that requires a kernel that supports it. In the iho roms this is included, on others you'll need to flash a kernel right after the rom.
For the stock rom I can upload what I use if you need it. Its basically the one posted here just with the boot.img swapped with one from a nandroid backup I made before switching roms
I think you're spot on with that idea.
I loaded CM7 variant, and it worked.
My question is, how do I get another ROM on it if it has the newer screen?
I loaded different kernels that were supposed to fix it, but no go.
