Button Brightness - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I searched and didn't see any threads related to this yet, so please forgive me if this has been covered. Is there a way to adjust the brightness of the LEDs behind the 4 buttons on the bottom of the Vibrant? I have seen this touted as a positive feature in articles comparing the Vibrant to the Captivate, but I'd actually rather they were dim or have their brightness linked to the screen brightness setting.
Cheers.

Where did you read that?
I've never heard of this until now and I'm a regular on XDA. Love your idea though

I edited the OP without re-reading and before submitting and it may have resulted in some confusion. It is a fact that the buttons are brighter on the Vibrant than on the Captivate. I have read at least one comparison article where this was touted as a positive feature (although I've also read where it was called out for being distracting, as it is for me). I did not mean that I had read anywhere that the brightness could indeed be adjusted on the Vibrant.
Not sure how you interpreted the OP, but thought I should clarify anyway.
I think there are two options here:
1) The Captivate uses a fixed resistor to limit the brightness of the LEDs
2) The Captivate simply takes advantage of a programmable VRM to limit the brightness of the LEDs
If it's option 1, well ... ****
But if it's option 2, I REALLY hope somebody figures out a way to access it.

I think if someone had figured how to access it w would have a LED notification by now.

Not exactly. Flashing a chip once to use a different voltage at all times is not the same as interfacing with it to allow for flashing notifications.

Is a colour temp change on our android display possible like with Redshift and F.Lux?

Came across F.Lux a while back and after installing it on my laptop tonight I remembered how huge a difference it makes to your eyes and sleep after you adjust to it.
F.Lux or Redshift (Linux's variant) reduces the colour temperature of screens to reduce the blue level, as when your eyes pick up blue light from any source, your body reduces sleep hormones (melatonin) and keeps you going as it believe's it's still daytime. Ever wake up throughout the night or wake up feeling groggy everyday? This might be why.
Here's a bit from the F.lux website:
"F.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.
It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better."
So what I'd like to know is if an app like this is possible on Android?
Something along similar lines was developed here: http://jsharkey.org/blog/2010/07/01/android-surfaceflinger-tricks-for-fun-and-profit/
But this sets the screen to only use one colour to display everything, be it red, blue, green, etc? but this effect is at the extreme end of the spectrum. If our phones could be tweaked to about 3400k when needed this could end up being a really useful app for all of us who stick our faces in front of our phones at night!
CyanogenMod has the Render Effect setting where you change the color temps to presets, but I haven't found an app that can do anything automatic like f.lux.
Do you know what this piece of software is called?
Does anyone have any interest in developing an app like this? just like the F.Lux software. I for one would be interested in purchasing/donating to it.
I think I stumbled across what you were talking about. 'Droid calibrator' it was named. Continuously crashed under non Galaxy S environments though, so that idea is out unless it could be modded somehow.
But yeah, does anyone have any other tips on existing software or have any interest in something like this also?
Bump this topic up! I just starting using F.lux today, and I'd kill for an Android version.
I wish i knew what it was called but my friend did have an app on his phone that changed the screens color. I assume this is what you want. Basically he had like 10 different widgets and each one tinted the screen that color.

That's a default feature of CyanogenMod. I'm looking for one that does it gradually based on the time of day.

no answers for a while someone found out something new?
From the official website:
"When is the Android verson coming out?
We have a version internally (it looks beautiful!) but it requires a very complicated installation process. We are working to simplify this and ship f.lux to the Android OS as soon as possible."
Cf.lumen
From my fingers to your eyez
I actually thought of this also. If I have the time I might make this.
I know there is Cf.lumen but you have to buy Chainfire 3d pro.
I have a very basic base (color screenfilter overlay). need custom colors and the timing, but it defiantly is possible.
Bump, This is a great idea that gets overlooked alot

Chainfire3D hasn't been updated since October, and night mode doesn't work with ICS. The dev is a complete slacker.

I broke down and bought Chainfire, I'm running AOKP b28 on an og incredible and it works fine.. $4 is wicked high for that app but I'll live
Any update for something similar? I have F.lux for my PC and it really does help a lot.
cf.lumen does the trick, but you have to have chainfire3d as well.
Love f.lux!
Actually, I prefer RedShift because it can control the brightness too! http://jonls.dk/redshift/
Lux Auto Brightness does exactly what f.lux/RedShift does, and then some!
Color Temperature and Automatic Brightness to Sub-Zero levels using the phone's Light Sensor !!!
I've dreamed so many nights about this kind of app!!!
f.lux, you can kiss my a#$ now, don't need you on android anymore
And Screen Filter... so long mate, we had some awesome reading nights but there's a new kid on the block now
p.s. I'm talking about the PAID VERSION! The free version doesn't have Night Mode and many other features
Just take a look at this little GEM!

I found lux too hard to operate. It completely took over the entire system's brightness. I found "EasyEyez" and it is so easy to turn on and off. I got the paid version and it has the sunset/sunrise timer and it is the closest I found to F.lux for Android.

Screen brightness on 2 different sgs2's

Hey
I had the chance to play with a stock sgs2 today, stock 2.3.5 software.
Mine is running lite'ning rom 6.1 + #k2-18 kernel which works great
But I noticed a big difference in screen brightness
My phone is back from when sgs2 was released this one was 2 days old.
I tried to lower brightness on both phones to minimum. Mine was alot brighter, its weird imo. Any clues on how to explain this? Is it Rom related ?
Anyways, for some time ago I found some script somewhere here on xda that would guide into some settings to manually lower brightness on the screen. But I really cant find that topic anymore :/ even google isnt my friend on this one..
I always run the light on lowest, because I can easely see stuff on the screen, and would like to lower it even more, to save some battery
Can anyone help me find that topic?
Thanks,
and happy new year!
Regards Rasmus

The SAMOLED-display is the "problem". The brightness decreases rather fast and they have a tendency to burn in. Besides that all of them are different. This was best seen when people found out about the yellow-side-problem. Some had, some didn't, some had more, done had less.

but as far as I understand Rasmusvm, he said, that his screen (the old one) was the brighter one, that's why he's confused...
check if the display settings are consistent on two phones.. there are 3 options Movies, Standard and Dynamic. There is bit of difference between the settings.
But I can not think of any other software settings that may make difference in screen brightness... it's probably hardware thing
Yes its my screen that is more brither than the new sgs2.
It wasnt a little bit you barely would've noticed, there was a huge difference thats why I find it odd..
But Im still looking for that guide to change screen brightness
I finally found the topic I was looking for

[MOD] Camera LED for notifications?

OK so I was messing around with my wife's iPhone 4S and found that you can set the LED to strobe for notifications. Would it be possible to implement something like this for our i717? And I say like this loosely because I don't want anyone getting in trouble with apple, lord knows they probably have a copyright... TIA!
Sent from my Slim Beaned out Gnote
It is probably possible.. I personally don't understand the necessity of it though, when BLN control exists.

that would be cool, but what if u're away from your phone and havent notice the LED flashing? i'm pretty sure it will eat the battery quick lol unless the LED has a time to turn off in afew secs....but yeah is possible to get the LED has notification
That's a good point!on my wife's phone it flash a pattern for normal notification ie. Txt , e-mail... and strobes fast for incoming calls but then turns off after the call is answered or goes to voice mail. And for the notification s it flashes the pattern like 2 or 3 times then stops...

Capacitive button brightness

I apologize if this has been asked and/or answered, but I could not find the answer on XDA or in this thread. Not even in a Google search. If I missed it, could someone direct me to it? I really did look. LOL
I was wondering if it would be possible for me to increase the brightness of the capacitive buttons on my Rezound permanently. I've installed NilsP ICS Business Sense ROM (I absolutely love it), but the buttons are too dim for my usage. I can go in and change the file "currents" in the /sys/devices/platform/leds-pm8058/leds/button-backlight directory, but it reverts back to a value of "2" after a reboot. Also, if I change the file "01tweaks" in the /system/etc/init.d directory, after a reboot, it also reverts back to a value if "2". Where in the system could I change that value so that it would become permanent? Or is it possible? Or would it be possible, even though I would prefer the above solution, to remove it completely so that it's back to stock values that the system controls?

Personally, I would be careful how high you bump it. HTC sets that level for a reason.
You might burn them out over time with more current, and also your battery life will take a hit.
But if you can figure it out, go experiment. I haven't heard of anybody doing this before.
I'm not sure that that file is referring to the current in amperage. It's in with other files like "brightness" (value of 60) and "maximum" (value of 255). Also, if you look at the file "01tweaks", there is a section called "#dim-leds" that has an echo value of "2" that appears to be written to the file "currents".
I could be all wrong about this. And if someone knows, please let me know.
Other than that, I'm still looking for a fix for this issue.

I saw this app the other day, and by looking at the screen shots of it, you can do some tweaking of the Capacitive button brightness

They're just LEDs. They don't really burn out unless you physically damage them or give them way too much voltage.

That's what I said, is it not?
You could try this. This file, when placed in the /system/etc/init.d folder will change the leds to a dimmer value than stock. Maybe if you play with changing the shecho number you can achieve what you are after. I believe that a value of "0" is off, but not sure and I haven't played with it to find out.
Just unzip and let us know how it works out for you.

No, you said that HTC set the normal level for a reason. Running it at 100% all the time would not damage the LEDs though.

Light sensor sensitivity?

I'm trying to use the light sensor in the EVO 3D as a condition in Locale to activate when my room is dark. Unfortunately, it seems that the lowest amount that the light sensor will report is 10lux in 10lux increments even when my room is nearly pitch black and I cover the sensor with my hand. According to the specs reported by Z-DeviceTest the sensor has a resolution of 1 lux. So I'm thinking that this might be a software issue. I'm currently on CyanogenMod 10 - GANGNAM STYLE with its stock kernel.
Is there anyway to increase the resolution of the sensor? I need to be able to detect when the ambient light is less than 1lux.
Thanks!
Does anyone know if this is a hardware level, driver level, or rom level setting?
My device doesnt go below 9 or 10 either. Actually the light sensor sucks. It only reports 3 or 4 values. Something like 9, 11, 140, and 160 i think. Kernel wont help u since its the crappy htc sensor.
I can't imagine that the sensor can't tell the difference between 10lux and 0-1lux. It must be a software issue of some kind. Maybe this is done to improve battery life be limiting the changes to values to those that will cause the screen brightness to change?
If there is a way to lower the minimum value retorted to 0-1 lux so that it either reports the values accurately or just rounds down it would really help reduce the likelihood of false positives with a Locale profile.
Does anyone anyone have any ideas on how this might be done?

Thanks. If you are interested there is a nice article on lux as a unit of measurement on Wikipedia. I would give you a link but I can't post those yet.
Hopefully, a kernel/rom guru will notice this thread and shed some light on the issue.
