Can't root after JI6 update? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I was forced to update by Tmobile. I could postpone forever but always have that icon in the taskbar. I decided to update. After updating I can no longer apply One Click Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739300 or get root after applying SGH-959 Root Update.zip. This is strange and have tried several times with both of these.
Is there a manual way of getting root? Or am I the only one with this problem.

I have the JI6 update, and I just rooted it not like 15 minutes ago without a problem downloading the root file to my phone and renameing it to update.zip, moving it to root of sdcard, and reinstalling packages through recovery.

Same thing here. Just can't get it to root. I will try reinstalling the update again I guess. Just wanted to see if anyone else was having this same issue.

Worked for me too
Using the SDK I used ADB RESTART RECOVERY, selecting the reinstall packages installed the update.zip and installed the root.

Wow another thread started because someone is too lazy to look up the solution themselves, wish we were all spoon fed answers, instead of having to put two and two together....

Well if you could please show me a post with this topic I am all ears.

Well what do you ppl come here for you dumb ass? To learn ****, you honestly have nothing better to do with your pathetic life than to talk down on somebody who's trying to learn? You are such a bad ass

In the general sticky I laid out the steps I took to root after flashing ji6. Check there.

I have Ji6 installed with everything stock. The SD card dir is now /sd and when I'm in recovery it can't find the file because it's looking in /sdcard . Have not seen anything regarding this in the sticky or anywhere else. Did I miss it? Any workarounds?

Used OCLF from Market. Worked!

help asap!!

Okay so I have a fascinate. This past weekend I was able to root my phone, install numerous different roms, and try different kernels. I decided I wanted to go back to stock, and start over with a clean rom and no lag fix. I did the 3 ODIN file's and when I got my phone up and running it says I have 0.0mb free space on my phone, so I cannot install anything. I also tried using the Stock Nandroid Image and cleared the data and cache and everything. To no avail I cannot free up any space. Please help!! I dont know what to do. My phone has 0.0mb free space on the built in card and I cant do anything now. Someone please help!!!
There are at least 4 other threads with this same issue and a thread with a fix. Please look around a little before posting. I am on my phone or I would post a link.

Here's the link to one of those threads. As stated above it always helps to search first this thread was on the third page so not too hard to find. I don't mean to sound like an ass but the mods are stretched slim so we have a lot of nonsense threads asking the same question.
Here's the link and best of luck! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804457&highlight=fixed
Thanks DD, was trying to find and post link from my phone and it's not so easy.

yeah, when it happened to me I ran through the whole thing. it happens when you don't remove voodoo properly. the /data partition is still in ext4 format and a nonvoodoo kernel can't read ext4. if that makes any sense...
it does somewhat. Doesnt help that im over tired. And i dont know what have the crap means on this remove voodoo thread either lol
Your welcome Skywalker and jr I'm not much of help ever but I do what I can when needed any luck as of yet jr?

[Q] PLEASE HELP!! I manually installed printershare.apk.. but can't uninstall??

I have a rooted samsung fascinate, with stock rom/kernal..
Anywho I was playin around with installing some apps and I wanted to install the free version of Printershare, but instead of getting it from the market I used an APK file to install it from my sd card. Well the file appears to have been corrupted, so I attempted to uninstall it through root explorer, as well as remove all traces of the program. When I went to reinstall the program from the APP market, I now get the error "Installation Failed.. Update Incompatible." I searched around to figure out what that meant and in the process I noticed that the com.dynamixsoftware.printershare package was still listed in my manage apps section, but I am not able to uninstall it from there. I searched for it in root explorer but like I said I deleted all traces of printershare before so i didnt find it there. If anybody can help me with this issue it would be greatly appreciated!! THX!
PS. Sorry if this is in the wrong section I'm new to XDA
What version and base band are you running? It may be overkill but you could just odin a stock rooted rom..since thats what you have now it will overwrite all your user data but it should completely get rid if those lingering files
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Usually when you delete Apps, you should reboot your phone before attempting to reinstall.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Do you have CWR if so boot into recovery, wipe dalvic, wipe cache, reboot. Should fix it.
Thanks for the help but..
Thanks for the help folks..
I went into CWM and deleted the dalvik and the cache which didn't help, I still get the "incompatible update" error.. even though it now tells me in the market that Printershare is not installed yet?
I supposed I may have to Odin a stock rom even though I'm not sure about that yet.. If I did id probably just make the jump to a custom rom. But If anybody else has any suggestions or ideas before I go into odin with a new rom, It would be greatly appreciated.
You are going to have the same problem with any Ron till you Odin. You shouldn't be afraid of Odin, I found on a sanding forum that Odin came from sanding, it is their program for loading android onto their phones, I would post the link but I don't remember exactly where I found that at. If you need help with Odin or files look in the general section for the fascinate, I posted a very easy to follow walk-through with all files you will need.

[Q] How do you flash roms on prerooted GB?

Feel free to move or delete this thread, or even create a better one because I can not seem to find what I am looking for.
I have an X2 that I went through the whole bootstrap, gingerbreak, upgrade to pre-root GB.
Now I have all that, Rom manager, CMR, Bootstrap installed, all those fancy programs, but when I try to use Clockwork Mod it just brings me back through the regular bootloop back to GB without even doing any update/flash whatever you might call it.
What am I missing here? Where is this magical step I am obviously overlooking? Sorry, yes I am a newb and now I want to try either eclipse(which is on my SD Card) or the CM7 nightlies...

Still the same result, I am trying to install a nightly right out of Rom Manager. It just reboots the phone, nothing else, not even an option to do anything else.
I still gave you a thanks for trying.
Rom Manager Doesn't Work, Koush Isn't Supporting The X2 Yet. The Clockworkmod We're Using Is Tenfars Based On Koush's Code.
Where can I find that?

should've made him work out a fractal before giving up the info...
Yes I also didn't think u t would just be as easy as how I got preroot gb when I first did it either
As easy as flashing the preroot. Do the same thing with eclipse and viola.
lol, I love fractals!
No, but on a serious note, I already had everything but had CMR because I used to have a DX. I thought I read somewhere people saying "clockword mod this..." and assumed it would be the same one!
This forum is freaking huge and can take someone hours to find a simple "how-to" lol.
there is no cm7 nightlies for this bad boy so dont flash any of them lol
I noticed, I have been trying to install the eclipse rom to no avail still. Followed all the prompts but keep getting the same error.
What error are u getting?
I will have to post it later when I get a minute to run through the steps again. I believe it was "E: Can't open.... Install aborted" something along those lines. Eclipse on SD card(if that makes a difference), just want to put as much info out as you guys might need to find my issue.

And u are using the option" install zip from sd card" where you have to go and physically choose the eclipse zip? You didn't unzip did you? Try deleting eclipse zip and redownload? And are you plugged in to your ac charger in a wall outlet? Can you list the exact steps you are doing? And it is on extern sd card correct?

The sticky in the android dev subforum has links to all the tutorials. Regarding the error, are you downloading eclipse with your phone or a computer. If using your phone try using your pc with Firefox or chrome browser. If that isn't feasible, I downloaded mine from phone but I had astro file manager installed so the stock browser would download it. You can try that. Most errors of that nature are related to a bad download. The links are all verified, next logical step is to try a different download method

[HELP] i can't root!!!! help!

See the pics attached:
I use this method
(from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034145):
"
E. Rooting for 2.3.3/2.3.4/2.3.5 (Thanks to russian forum-user with nickname may213):
1) Download attached file called upd_1.zip and copy it to your sdcard
2) Turn off your phone
3) Press POWER+HOME BUTTON
4) Select update from sdcard, select the file upd_1.zip
5) After the update completed - reboot
6) Now you have rooted S5830
"
before rooting, I've done this———“How to force install apps to SD card without ROOT!!!”, does this affect my rooting?
Try to mount/system and data then flash again.
tried, still can't. thx anyway.
Problem solved!!
I find this article "How to root Samsung Galaxy Ace on Froyo & Gingerbread
"acetips.wordpress.com/2011/09/29/root-ace-froyo-gingerbread/"
I follow the note:
"Those who are getting errors and cant root their phone , Download this file “AceGingerRoot.zip” and use it instead of “upd_1.zip”"
download the file “AceGingerRoot.zip".
and successfull!!!!
I don't know why, but again, it's successful!
I'm sorry, I thought my problem solved.
coz I saw the update completed and the superuser icon in the app drawer.
But when I try to open Titanium Backup, it says my ROM is not rooted.
Still need help!
and my phone is locked to my carrier,
does it affect the rooting?
really need help!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so frustrated!!!
Lol. I had the exact same problem! Are you intending to install cm7? Whatever I did that update pack would not root for me... I ended up flashing clockwork mod ace, a recovery just for the ace. I've heard that the regular ROM Manager can brick this phone. Then installed cm7 without having the root permission in Gingerbread. You can do it just by placing the Rom on the SD and using the install zip from sd option. You will want to make a backup before you do this. Also check if you can find your providers APN values online for setting up mobile data. Worked for me. Do I like cm7? It is good, very customizable. However, do not expect something as polished as the firmware without a bit of effort to figure out the options.

And no, being locked to a carrier does not affect rooting your phone.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA Premium App
you can try CF-root
You should also have a look at the topic on this forum "(Q) GTS5830B root?" I think it may be applicable to you. Some stuff about changing the script in the update.zip pack to match the model of your Ace.
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA Premium App
yes, I got the problem exactly same as this thread""(Q) GTS5830B root?" " but I don't understand how to solve it using the method mentioned in that thread.
Actually, I'm not only just a noob, also, ace is my first smartphone.
I tried to figure out all the new words, apps, systems I had to use to get my Ace to customize as my wish.
I'll managed to solve my problem by figuring out the approach that thread mentioned. If I can't, I'll probably try CM7(another new thing to learn).
Thank you for your hint, at least now, I saw the hope out there.
I've tried these 2:
1. edit "updater-script" by changing "GT-S5830" to "GT-S5830T"(my model number), it doesn't work, aborted.
2. delete the "assert", it worked, update completed.
But,
Still,
when I try to open titanium or root uninstaller,
they all say "it is not rooted" after updating was successful.
I just don't get it. WHY?????
I tried to unroot, coz I thought maybe I can get rid of the useless superuser app got from updating "“AceGingerRoot.zip” ", and then I will give modified "update.zip" another try.
However, it's so funny that the superuser app is still there after updating unroot.zip successfully(at least that's what the screen says).
Can I recovery to the stock state by using the recovery mode? so I can get rid of all these stuff and start again!
Okay, you have EXACTLY the same problem I did. You could try SuperOnceClick. It never worked for me, but it might be worth a try before giving up. There is a good Tutorial on it here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
When that didn't work I just installed CyanogenMod-7.1-RC1Cooper-Grif_07 and moved on with my life. You can get it to look just like Gingerbread, but you will loose all your Samsung stuff, and your GPS might not be able to get a fix. Sorry...

Yes, if you made a back-up before you started. It is really easy, it just takes a few min... Without a backup you would need to download the original firmware.

I've heard cannot get backup by using clockwork recovery if it's not rooted. Am I wrong about it?
and I thought SuperOnceClick is for Froyo and not for ACE?
When I installed I was so MAD that I was ready to smash the phone, so honestly I never backed up before installing CM7. You can go ahead and try. The worst that can happen is nothing. If you're flashing CM7 and you absolutely hate it you can always reset back to the factory ROM by downloading and installing it. There is a full Tutorial here including links to everything you need! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263292

I'll give it a try tomorrow, and see how it goes.

(Question) ROMs and BRICKING

I'm aware that there are a few ways to get a new rom after rooting. But which method would be the easiest (DUMMY PROOF) for me it being my first time so I don't brick my phone. Also if anyone has any tips of the trade basically what NOT to do... It would be appreciated, thanks

Here is a quick place to start:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586223
the best advice I can give you are:
1. use CWM to install roms
2. if it requires ADB and requires messing with something in /dev/ either be super careful or dont do it
3. make sure the file you are going to flash using CWM is an actual rom!!!!
4. backup as often as you can
5. READ the WHOLE POST
6. dont work while you are tired, your chance of making mistakes are too high
beware
just stay away from international note..roms are differant..not compatable
Just a friendly suggestion. If you start a thread, try to keep all your questions in there. Double posting is frowned upon. I also wouldn't ask any questions until you've exhausted all your options(search and google). Most noobs will spend weeks or even months reading all the forums and searching google. All the info you could ever want is there. You can also search on YouTube and watch exactly how to do it. If you do these things you'll never have to ask a question again. And if you happen to have a question down the road......no worries....there will always be a new noob that has already asked....I promise I'm not trying to be a jerk. I just wanted to give you a heads up before another member beat me to the punch.

No offense taken bro. I appreciate it. I finally rooted my phone tonight... But the thing is I need a new sd card to back up my stock rom. Which brings me to a new question. How much space does a rom need to be backed up? Cause it says error when I try to back it up
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
Hmmm. don't make any backups using any apps. Make sure you boot directly to recovery and make backup from there. Are you running cwm touch based recovery? Also, if your external sd has nothing on it yet, you can try to format(which will erase everything) and try again. What root method did you use? Btw, congrats on being rooted! Now all the fun begins!
Edit:space depends on what you have, but you should probably have at least 2gigs available on your external sd. The "ROM space" itself has nothing to do with a backup. If you used Da g's kernel to root, then you still need to flash cwm through Odin before you can make a backup.
Sent from Galaxy Note
I tried to back it up using the newest version of cwm. But here's one more thing that confuses me. When I try not to open titanium it says something about not being able to access root
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
Are you sure you're rooted? Do you have superuser app in your app drawer? If you do, make sure you open it up, hit menu, go to settings and check su binary. Also make sure busybox is installed. You can grab busybox installer from the market. You can also grab root checker from the market. This will tell you if root was successful. If you have cwm then you should be able to make a backup whether you're rooted or not. When you go into recovery and hit backup and restore, and then backup, what's the error you're getting?

I got it to back up to the internal sd card. Good? I have to do the next step with the superuser
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
I did the whole process and I do have superuser in my draw but when I use the rootchecker it says it wasn't successful. I don't understand why. I did it step by step.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
Hey froidroid do I know what this means?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
Lol. It means don't use it. That app was made for a specific kernel for the s2. I'd stay away.
Sent from Galaxy Note
Also, don't use the ROM manager app to make a backup. You have to make the backup folder location in the external sd. That's probably why it's backing up to the internal(cause that's where the folder is). Make the location sdcard/external_sd/clockwork........and so on. I used ROM manager to create the location. That's all you should need that app for. After that, you can get rid of it.
