Ok so I'm pretty new to the android scene. Today I got a notice that I had a update so I unrooted because of people saying that if updating while rooted it will brick then I clicked apply update. My phone then rebooted and said up date failed. Im guessing from the lack of cell reception. Does any one know how to try again if I check for updates it says no firmware thankyou in advanced

There are a couple of ways to do it,
1) force your system to check for update
2) use ODIN to manually update, you can grab the software from the development section in the bible.
ok i tried to force update but it doesnt do anything then i tried to clear the data from the Device management app and check for updates again and it says system not ready check network or sim so im guessing i should just wait it out to see if they push it again. i would rather stay away from the sdk area i just got the phone out of the black screen of death today.
I take it you can 3 finger salute your phone if needed?
I personally feel the easiest thing to do is update it through mini Kies. If you need further instructions on how to do it, let me know.
I'm gonna hold off for a week because tmobile is sending me a new phone for some other issues I'm having but how would I update through mini kies cuz the gps on this phone takes so long so when I get the new phone I'm gonna fix that

At the risk of looking like a complete and total newb. (which I am). I have a question. First off this is my first smart phone, so bear with me. Im anxiously awaiting the JI6 update. Does it matter if im on wifi or 3g when the update comes my way? Also if im downloading a app or something else when the update rolls out will I still get it? What if my phone is off when its my turn, will it show up when I turn it on? I know they are probably ridiculous, but im new so be gentle. Thanks everyone.

1) OTA (Over The Air) updates mean it's being done through the phone signal, wifi will not matter.
2) You will get the update no matter what; despite what you're doing. Your phone has to connect to the device manager site first anyways.
3) Your phone has to be on to receive OTA updates. How else will it know to grab the update?
4) If you don't want to wait anymore (and I can tell you can't), just go to http://tiny.cc/wvu43 and follow the instructions. Straight from Samsung site.
Thanks twoguns. Appreciate the info. Your right I dont want to wait. But unfortunately my pc is dead. Be a few weeks before I get it fixed.

I was just messing with my wife's fascinate, and I kept getting an error when trying to do the ota update. I decided to just do it myself using the method described here.
If you already have the OTA EA28, you can skip to the last step. (To get into the stock recovery, Hold Volume up, volume down, and power until the samsung logo appears, and then let all three go.)

Did you get an error message or did it freeze while updating the modem? Mine kept getting stuck on the screen with the android coming out of the box. I had the same happen to me and so did the mobile rep at Best Buy. I was able to Odin ED01, but I would recommend replacing it.

Ok so I went into VZW and talked to the same guy I did om fri and he called tech support how called samsung and what samsung said try the download again so I did and now I have 2.2.
Odd since the update is controlled by Verizon Samsung shouldn't have any idea about when to try it. They do their updates via kies software i believe.
today my girlfriends rezound got the ics update so i thought i would check mine. after trying to check for new updates the screen says checking for new updates then goes straight back to the screen to select status or check new. any ideas why?

Got the same thing going on here. I downgraded to GB to get the OTA since the RUU gave me problems. All I got was a small update that says its for getting my device ready for ICS.
Nevermind, Just did a check and its downloading! If it helps I switched to CDMA only, then back to LTE/CDMA, checked, and baboom

It could be that the update just hasn't been pushed to your phone yet.

Had the same issue after RUUing back to GB and what fixed it for me was a factory data reset in bootloader. Checked for update after it rebooted and found the OTA without issue. Hope that helps.
Mine would not update until almost charged. I don't know if that made a difference. But soon as I unplugged it, it started the ota

Went to check on any software updates on my Galaxy Mega GT-i9152, (as you do), and the message "Your device has been modified updates are not available" appears.
Now, I know when I first got the phone, (around 1 month ago), there was an update to it. This was after I'd checked via System, About, Software Updates.
I have NOT rooted this device. Not messed with it in any way, shape or form, it is in fact as stock, like the day I took it out of the box.
I have posted pics of the Firmware details etc.
All very strange.
Strange..!!! Why it show?? I think here no update available.. Not sure..
Did you get it as a "refurbished" device?

No, brand new.
As I said earlier, when I first turned it on, I immediately did a software check to see if there were any updates. There was one. No message about being "modified"..and status was Official.
Then checking earlier today, it says it's modified.

That is just too weird. My ATT Mega is only rooted. I still can check for official updates- Not that there is any!!!!!!!!! I don't get those messages about being custom. Also, If I don't have my att sim card in the phone when I check, the check for update gets interupted and never completes.
Now on my Note 8, which is rooted with a custom recovery I do get those "modified" device pop ups. I think it's the custom recovery that does it.
Got a notification this morning about downloading a system update and out of habit, immediately turned the phone off even though I don't have plans to root(mainly because it's not available yet!).
Anyone know what's in the update or what it's adding/patching?
Looks like a pretty small update, 40.67MB. Says "Device Security Improvements" Baseband version went from APB5 to APC2
That probably means there is a root exploit even if nobodies found it yet huh
That's what I was thinking buradd. Still holding out hope. Lol

I was doing that all day.. then i heard a notification sound, went to grab my phone and it was automatically rebooting into recovery installing the update.. kind of intrusive if you ask me, they really wanted my phone patched...
Same here. Hit remind me later and later it did it automatically.
