I was just messing with my wife's fascinate, and I kept getting an error when trying to do the ota update. I decided to just do it myself using the method described here.
If you already have the OTA EA28, you can skip to the last step. (To get into the stock recovery, Hold Volume up, volume down, and power until the samsung logo appears, and then let all three go.)

Did you get an error message or did it freeze while updating the modem? Mine kept getting stuck on the screen with the android coming out of the box. I had the same happen to me and so did the mobile rep at Best Buy. I was able to Odin ED01, but I would recommend replacing it.

Ok so I went into VZW and talked to the same guy I did om fri and he called tech support how called samsung and what samsung said try the download again so I did and now I have 2.2.
Odd since the update is controlled by Verizon Samsung shouldn't have any idea about when to try it. They do their updates via kies software i believe.

Ok so I'm pretty new to the android scene. Today I got a notice that I had a update so I unrooted because of people saying that if updating while rooted it will brick then I clicked apply update. My phone then rebooted and said up date failed. Im guessing from the lack of cell reception. Does any one know how to try again if I check for updates it says no firmware thankyou in advanced

There are a couple of ways to do it,
1) force your system to check for update
2) use ODIN to manually update, you can grab the software from the development section in the bible.
ok i tried to force update but it doesnt do anything then i tried to clear the data from the Device management app and check for updates again and it says system not ready check network or sim so im guessing i should just wait it out to see if they push it again. i would rather stay away from the sdk area i just got the phone out of the black screen of death today.
I take it you can 3 finger salute your phone if needed?
I personally feel the easiest thing to do is update it through mini Kies. If you need further instructions on how to do it, let me know.
I'm gonna hold off for a week because tmobile is sending me a new phone for some other issues I'm having but how would I update through mini kies cuz the gps on this phone takes so long so when I get the new phone I'm gonna fix that

So i had a Vibrant using 2.1 and i updated to 2.2 using kies mini. Phone went thru with the upgrade but never booted back. Phone will not turn on at all. Tried to push it into download mode but tht wont work either. Is there still a way to recover the phone?
p.s already went thru the FIX AND RESCUE YOUR VIBRICK Guide.
Did you try the taking battery, vol up down, plug usb then put back battery one? If yes and still a no go try a jig, you can get one from ebay or mobiletechvideos. If still a no go on that i guess just take it back to t-mo. Good luck.

This. If Kies Mini bricked it, then it will be fixed by using the download mode method he states, you shouldn't need a JIG.
I hope Odin picks it up! Tmo wont honor the warranty as i bought the phone from a 3rd party..I already tried tht.
The Jig didnt work for me! Since i bought this phone from craigslist Tmobile said they cant give me a replacement since the warranty is not under my name? Is there anyway i could go thru Samsung to get a replacement? Or will they require some sort of documentation in the form of a sales receipt? Can someone who has gotten a replacement thru Samsung help me please. Any help will be appreciated
Find a local repair shop and if they have a jtag and the proper software/firmware they should be able to bring it back to life in the event the boot loader was damaged. Again, depends on what the problem is, if it's fried........ sorry!

Check out the Odin part. It will help you flash back to 2.1. You can try updating again with clean 2.1. I messed up updating to 2.2 once, so I used Odin to go back to 2.1 and re-update.
Only if the phone powered on could i use Odin...
Long-time reader, first time post..
Same thing happened to me. T-mobile replaced it. Luckily I had wiped it clean and was unrooted before I updated.
I replaced it through samsung, as long as you didn't root it then you should be ok, or as long as it is on stock without root. Just tell them that your calling to see if you have warranty. Then they will ask you what your imei number, which is located on the back. Then read it to them and they will tell you if it has warranty or not. To convince them to take it in, just make up something. Don't tell them that you dropped it or something, just tell them that it won't turn on and that you don't know why or something, hope this helps.

Talk to Samsung support. You don't have to make up a story since it happened while upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2 through Kies. Tell them that and you should be covered.
Hi xda I just rooted my phone and im going to unlock my boatloader but I was reading when I update sbf my phone gets deactivated and o have to call sprint.? Can I do it online. Sorry guys its my first motorla phone im coming from an htc phone. And I mostly flash at night time cause that's when I have time to do it plus sprint is closed during night lol.
Thanks fellow xda conrads.!

Most of the time hands free activation kicks in and does it for you has been my experience with it
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Most of the time, yea. Butwhen I installed stock sbf, my phone was not activating, tried reboots, battery pulls, and nothing, then I went to about phone aand seen that my phone number was not what it should be, so that's why the phone doesn't go throught hands free activation. I ended up calling sprint, they fixed it, but they asked if anything was messed with the phone , ofcorse I said "no" lol. Just say you haven't been able to make calls or receive, they'll go through the activation process with you.
Sent from my Mopho Cm7.2
I also don't see why you wouldn't be able to do it online. I didn't try that, . Lol

Now I get it lol.! Thanks guys for the answer now im going to go unlock.! Tired of stock lol im a flash cracker.!
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
what i did was i called but that took me a good 15 minutes so the next time i flashed to stock i took a screenshot of the activation number and what number you have to dial to activate your phone so you can do it by yourself
I wrote my info somewrre, but I lost it, so when I do, if I have to go back to stock, ill probably have to call again unless you can tell me what's the number you have to type in the phone dialer, I can get all the other info from my about phone..
Sent from my Mopho Cm7.2
Wait what? I just went to unlocked CM 7.2 and have had no issues calling/txting etc. Are you guys saying it'll be a problem if I try to switch back to stock?
When I was having problems with my photon, I followed qbkings unbrick video, returning to stock via RSD lite, sbf. Yes it fixed my problems but phone wouldn't activate, that's when I checked on about phone, and phone number did not match, so I had to call sprint. Its not a major problem but yeah it didn't hand free activate for me.
Sent from my Mopho Cm7.2
But if you made a backup of stock, beforeyou flashed, then you can just run the restore, it will restore stock/or whatever ROM you were on without this problem, I think its only when flashing stock thru RSD lite.

In an attempt to start with the whole 2 phone replacement process to try and score a different phone, I went into Verizon today to complain to them about our phones many issues (music skips, battery issues, random freezes etc.) After that whole deal they said an update for our phones is noe available and is being currently pushed to all DX2 users, that being the case the Verizon rep said to wait until the update and then come back if the issues persist at which point I said under my breath "oh they will" lol so I guess I'm waiting a couple more days until we get the 2.3.5 update. Just figured I would give all of the annoyed DX2 owners an update on what's going on! As always thanks to everyone on these forums for keeping us sane with this phone. Also, does anyone have 2.3.5 on a stock DX2 yet? Has it fixed any issues?
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA
Should really go through one of the topics about getting a new phone and grab that number someone posted I used to get them to let me early upgrade. Btw I doubt it fixed the problems. I actually would bet it did not.
Hmm I'll have to try that! the only reason I'm trying to get a new phone right now is because my 3G signal has recently gone south whether im on stock or CM7. Ill have to browse the forums to find that number, Thanks!
Hold on..I'll get it for you..

So the wife and I just picked up a Note 3 each on Sprint. I rooted and installed TWRP on both without issues. I ran the zip to unlock the native hotspot on mine and booted up just fine after. Now I installed the zip on the wife's phone and now it starts to boot and gets hung up on the yellow Sprint screen. I have rebooted into TWRP and tried wiping the phone but still no luck. I was stupid and rushed though it and didn't make a nandroid backup. I feel like my only option is to return it to best buy tomorrow and just not say anything about the rooting. Anyone have an idea to avoid exchanging the phone at best buy?
Thanks ahead of time.
Use your nandroid on her phone then factory reset. Or flash one of the stock rooted roms. Guessing as usual lol.

Thanks guys. Turns out the wife had updated to MJ4 so the native hotspot zip was locking the phone up after the install. Flashed back to stock and re-rooted and installed TWRP.

Best news of the night! Great to see this.
FWIW, I didn't leave Sprint until my baseband showed MJ4 (ie, took the update at the store, and didn't leave until it showed on reboot).

Coming from HTC, I would never update the firmware as fear HTC would make it so you couldn't get S-OFF. Don't have to worry about the S-ON or S-OFF crap on Samsung luckily.
So what is the best way to update to MJ4? I rooted and flashed Jellybomb but still shows my software is MI5. I was thinking that it would have been updated with the ROM but I should have known better. With HTC, there was a zip to flash to update the firmware separately. I'm guessing there is something similar with Samsung phones. Thanks ahead of time.

After you update use Kingo app to root it.
Why do I have to re-root? I'm already rooted. From what I've found, all I have to do is install the MJ4 firmware tar file via Odin. I shouldn't have to re-root and start over again. I rooted via Odin so I don't care about tripping Knox. Can someone just confirm I just need to run the MJ4 tar file via Odin and won't have to re-root or install my rom over again? Thanks

Looks like you made the same jump I did from htc 4g lte to N3. It's quite a bit better isn't it?
I am not happy with the direction htc is going as a company so I jumped ship on them. I had no idea the samsung phones had gotten this good since I set the Epic 4G on fire and swore I'd never buy another Samsung phone again. This phone is so much better than the 4G LTE I'm almost ashamed at how many people I talked into buying one. Oh well...
Funny about the fear of updating. When the girl at BB was setting my N3 up it started downloading an update and I snatched it out of her hands and restarted it to stop the update. I told her I was going to root it and an update might make that impossible. lol I'm coming around, slowly. If knox wasn't in the loop it would be a lot easier. I hope its just a matter of time before work arounds are found for that.

Yep, I had the Epic 4G and after watching my sister with all the issues she had her Epic Touch, I swore I would never own anther Samsung again. But with the lack of support from HTC on existing phones and seeing friends with the S3, S4 and Note2 without issues, I figured I'd give them another shot. I mean I likeed my EVO LTE but this phone is so much faster and I love the larger screen. Plus, so much easier to root this phone compared to the EVO LTE.
