Phone activation - Motorola Photon 4G

Hi xda I just rooted my phone and im going to unlock my boatloader but I was reading when I update sbf my phone gets deactivated and o have to call sprint.? Can I do it online. Sorry guys its my first motorla phone im coming from an htc phone. And I mostly flash at night time cause that's when I have time to do it plus sprint is closed during night lol.
Thanks fellow xda conrads.!

Most of the time hands free activation kicks in and does it for you has been my experience with it
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium

Most of the time, yea. Butwhen I installed stock sbf, my phone was not activating, tried reboots, battery pulls, and nothing, then I went to about phone aand seen that my phone number was not what it should be, so that's why the phone doesn't go throught hands free activation. I ended up calling sprint, they fixed it, but they asked if anything was messed with the phone , ofcorse I said "no" lol. Just say you haven't been able to make calls or receive, they'll go through the activation process with you.
Sent from my Mopho Cm7.2

I also don't see why you wouldn't be able to do it online. I didn't try that, . Lol
Sent from my Mopho Cm7.2

Now I get it lol.! Thanks guys for the answer now im going to go unlock.! Tired of stock lol im a flash cracker.!
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App

what i did was i called but that took me a good 15 minutes so the next time i flashed to stock i took a screenshot of the activation number and what number you have to dial to activate your phone so you can do it by yourself

I wrote my info somewrre, but I lost it, so when I do, if I have to go back to stock, ill probably have to call again unless you can tell me what's the number you have to type in the phone dialer, I can get all the other info from my about phone..
Sent from my Mopho Cm7.2

Wait what? I just went to unlocked CM 7.2 and have had no issues calling/txting etc. Are you guys saying it'll be a problem if I try to switch back to stock?

When I was having problems with my photon, I followed qbkings unbrick video, returning to stock via RSD lite, sbf. Yes it fixed my problems but phone wouldn't activate, that's when I checked on about phone, and phone number did not match, so I had to call sprint. Its not a major problem but yeah it didn't hand free activate for me.
Sent from my Mopho Cm7.2

But if you made a backup of stock, beforeyou flashed, then you can just run the restore, it will restore stock/or whatever ROM you were on without this problem, I think its only when flashing stock thru RSD lite.

There is a chance that they would notice, but if it's simply the trackball that's problematic, I doubt they'll go into your system info that much.
Option A.) Downgrade and don't risk it (your getting a new phone most likely anyway if it is truly broken.
Option B.) Take the new weather/clock widget and other stuff that is obviously from 2.1 off your home screen(s), and try to use the ones that look like they are from 1.5. That would be enough to trick a random person who doesn't have any experience with an eris I would think...
I would recommend calling customer support. They don't ask that many questions. Just, if its rooted, restore to 1.5 using jcase's method.
thanks alot so its possable to downgrade without needing my trackball to go down?? lmao
hmm... does anyone know if this is a problem with 2.1 in general? I'm still on 2.1leak (dont want to upgrade to anything else in fear that leak will be able to root before whatever i upgrade to) and my ball wont go down.
I was going to go into verizon tomorrow to get it replaced so i could go root instead... but if anyone thinks that's a bad idea let me know.
ur track ball won't go down either?
Sent from my Eris using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
yep, I just went to the verizon store, a new unit is being sent to me in a couple days.
but, back on topic. I'm fairly certain 2.1 voided the warranty over the air. When i went to go in to get a replacement unit, they couldn't figure out why my phone was out of warranty when i just got it back in november/december.
Is there anyway that updating to 2.1 verizon pinged the phone or the phone pinged verizon and they marked it out of warranty?
the representatives there just did some work around in the computer to give me my warranty, thankfully they weren't too smart to look at the firmware number (it was locked even if they tried).
(one representative just had a can of compressed air blowing directly on the trackball for like 2 minutes... i couldn't believe he even tried that :/ )
think ill be ok if I don't go back to stock 1.5? reply ASAP in leaving in an hour

Of course you'll be fine, think about how much money they get from your account with this type of phone, they dont want to loose you as a customer...

Lucky.... now you have one you can brick
verizon doesn't make you send back your old phone? sweet! i'm getting a new one sent to me as well. I'll love having this extra one around to practice changing the trackball and development and stuff.
also, does the replacement unit still come with the 8gb sd card? that's a freaking deal right there.
I have received many (many!) replacements from big red and they have always required that I send the "bad" device back. You are given 10 days from the time you receive the replacement, then the old one goes back or you pay The only way you may be able to keep the old one is via insurance claim, not sure on this.
When you get a referb form VZW it will be bare bones device without battery, back cover, SD. Nothing but the phone (again insurance claim may be different).
otoh. I opened it when I got home... hope I don't have to send back
Sent from my Eris using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Yes, you have 10 days to return your old device on a warranty claim, or you are charged the retail price of the phone.
question i have though... what happens when they get my old phone and see firstly a nexus one boot screen, and secondly, it's 2.1?
they probably won't care its too late

[Q] Bricked Thunderbolt? :(

This time I have really f***ed up guys. I really think this time I have actually bricked my Thunderbolt. I was on Bamf Remix 1.63 I believe and everything was running great. I was obviously rooted also. I was bored and decided to flash Protekks Battery Sipper Kernel. Right after I flashed it, the phone would not boot. I pulled the battery and booted up again and it got stuck in a boot loop. So after a few tries I finally got it to boot into the bootloader. I got into recovery and tried to flash a backup and it rebooted in the middle of restoring it. I tried that a few more times. I then let the battery die. Then I charged it up a lot and tried to power it on and got nothing. The screen will not even turn on. When plugged into my computer it sometimes vibrates and my computer detects it and then my computer makes the sound like it was disconnected. I think it is still stuck in the boot loop with the screen off though. BTW the charging light does light up when plugged in. I tried the stock and extended battery to make sure it was not a battery problem. I finally called up Verizon and after I told them it would not turn on he said he is shipping me a free replacement. I told them that after a OTA update the phone would not boot. He warned me that if there is any evidence that the phone was rooted or hacked, I would be charged the retail price for the phone. That is really the only thing I am scared of. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Sorry for the long post, I wanted to get in all the details that I could.
Thanks
Adam

Wtf? This isn't Samsung. OP do you bootloop in bootloader? I recommend you go to the irc and give them any info you can.. you will probably end up flashing a stock ruu through the bootloader but first go to irc.

Yeah I did not think we have Odin for HTC phones, and I already have the stock zip file on my MicroSD card but my screen will not turn on at all. I can not get into anything. Any advice?

OK thanks for the replies. Do you think the Verizon warranty center people will actually go to the trouble of getting it to work and then charge me full retail for a new one if they see it is rooted. I already have the stock zip on the SD card so when it does boot up, it will return everything to stock. I have read online that some people have been charged retail because there phones have been rooted but most of them have gotten away with with it..

I think you're almost certainly fine. It's a lot of work and time for big red over one phone. Plus, your etf is less expensive than a replacement device

thanks for the response man. etf= early termination fee? I might not have said in my original post but they are sending me a free replacement device. The rep on the phone specifically said that if they find my phone to be rooted or hacked, that I will be charged around 629$ for the refurb replacement. I really cannot afford that (
Call back and tell em you accidentally dropped it out of moving vehicle and that it was run over 5 times...and that it was raining outside. Then pay your deductible.

I got out of a bootloop on my friend's Insipre 4G (which is very similar to the TB) by mounting the microSD on my computer, and then putting a stock ROM on it. I had to rename the stock ROM PG98IMG (PG05IMG on Thunderbolt), and flash it through the bootloader, but it did work.
Thanks for the post man but the Thunderbolt does not show any signs of life at all besides the flashing orange LED at the top blinking and the computer detecting it on and off every 5 minutes. The stock zip is already on the SD card so when it finally boots up it will flash and hopefully Verizon won't charge me out the @ss for a replacement.

how long have you had your phone and what hardware revision was it? did you try to run the RUU yet?
i think some people just got a batch of faulty phones because this doesn't seem to affect many.
I highly doubt verizon is going to receive your broken phone and boot it up and it will magically work. The only way it will auto-update is if they boot it into HBOOT. If they somehow just power it on it won't automatically apply anything. Keep that in mind. But I really wouldn't worry too much about it. If they charge you call them and tell them wtf I wasn't rooted. I don't even know what that means lol.
I have had the phone since the very first days it was released. Another slight annoying thing I have had happening prior is the glue on the screen has not been holding it down very well and and I can easily get a nail under it. And it wont let me do anything. I have a Droid X as a backup for now but I miss my beast

[Q] My Photon became and Electrify?!?!

I bought a Motorola Photon and unlocked the boot loader, rooted, Clockwork Mod Recovery'd, tried the whole Sprint phone unlocked for all carriers, then flashed CM9.
I tried to sbf back to stock and somehow (assuming I downloaded the wrong file along the way) I now have a Motorola Electrify that tries to run on U.S.Cellular.
I have subsequently downloaded all three stock sbf files on ShabbyPenguin's website and none of them will flash. (Super mega thanks to Shabby!)
I apologize if this is a duplicate thread. I've been searching all over this forum and the general interweb since roughly 9:00pm last night. Does anyone know a way I can force my phone to allow the flash that keeps failing on "re-enumeration"?
I come from mostly Samsung devices and RSD seems to be the closest thing to "download mode" but in download mode you can pretty much flash anything. Sorry this is long and rambling.

Yikes... I think once people flash that Electrify SBF by mistake, they are screwed.
Well, crap.
Take it to nearest Sprint store ask someone there to reprogram it you tried to do a system update and the battery died in the middle of it and how your phone is now is the end result if you have insurance it will be free to program it and if it fails to program should get new/ refurbished one for free or at the worst what ever the replacement fee is worth a shot worked for me once I tried to flash an sbf and my damn battery drained completely. Took it to Sprint store said the above and received the above. Gl

I don't have insurance.
If you dont have the insurance it will cost you $35 for a replacement phone. I bricked mine without insurance and had to cough up the $35 for a new one. They tried reflashing my phone for free though but it didnt fix issue, so they should reflash it for you no problem without charging
Do you think they'll do it even though its booting up as an electrify on U.S.Cellular?

Honestly, it depends on who you see. As a Sprint employee who works at a S&R store, and into rooting myself, I'd have no problem with it (Upstate NY btw). But technically, since it's unlocked, its broken the warantee, and if you go to a store thats very by the books, it's gonna be iffy. If you can, go to a serice and repair store that IS NOT corporate, and likely they'll do it for you. If they ask if you rooted it, just say yes, and one of two things will happen. Either they'll say "sorry, we can't help you" and then you go to a different store, because trust me, that **** doesn't get noted or anything, or since the guy knows what rooting is, he's probably into it himself and will sympathise and get you a new one.
Sprint service and repair store turned me down. Looks like I'm just gonna keep at it. I figure I'll get it at some point. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'll give it a try.

Does you phone say unlocked ?
Currently, it does not say unlocked. It also gives me an error message if I try to execute any fastboot commands aside from:
moto-fastboot -w
&
moto-fastboot reboot
Motorola is saying all I can do is send it in to them. I can get into RSD mode but nothing will successfully flash. I'm starting to think they might be right. I'm just so used to having Samsung phones. They're relatively easy in comparison. If anyone has any ideas, I'm open to suggestions.
Try # moto-fastboot -w and then rds unlock then #moto-fastboot erase recovery #moto-fastboot flash recovery recovery-cyan-photon3.img (cwm) and you should be good! *cross fingers*
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Yeah, that is not going to work either.
That electrify ROM is a PITA when placed on the Photon.
I was able to exchange mine at the local store, but I luck out in the fact that they LOVE me there.
My exchange didn't cost me a dime either. However by that time the phone wouldn't charge either, so it wasn't booting, so they couldn't see the unlocked or the US Cellular boot animation.
Plus the fact the the owner and one of the techs were running Photons really helped.
Good luck.
I have the same problem I think the only way to solve this is to actually unlock it and use a custom rom. OR wait for Sprint to release a 2.3.5 rom to flash since you have a 2.3.5 bootloader I basically have a useless phone now

Ok, I've tried that. Basically what I've found is that the 2.3.4 sbf for both the Photon 4G and the Electrify are unlockable, but the 2.3.5 which is available for the Electrify comes with a non unlockable bootloader. Somewhere along the line I must have accidentally flashed that and now I'm screwed. There is no way to downgrade without unlocking and no way to unlock that bootloader at this time. Sorry for the bad news to anyone else in this predicament. If anyone comes across a solution, please let me know.

try "frying" the phone phone/cpu so u can get it replaced without them seeing it unlocked ?
More or less that is what I did. By the time I brought my phone into the local store, it wouldn't even turn on.
Now when the tech put his charged battery into the phone, it showed whatever it did, but I was taken care of.

[Q] signal different after flashing to stock?

Ok so I rooted this bad-boy I used the HTC unlock method, upon selection of my ROM audibly was miui I wiped and flashed but I did not flash in fastboot. I flashed in recovery and it actually took, problem is I noticed my signal had reduced to 1x speed. Upon flashing to a sense ROM which is cleanrom3.0 I used it to update prl and profile but didn't help stayed the same. So I called Sprint they tried to work some magic to no avail. I then took it upon myself to go complete stock and rid root. Once the ruu flashed and I booted, I noticed I had 3g I checked prl version number and it was the same as before I went to stock. So i didn't get to happy I still wanted more research info for the cause. I then did a speed test and oh god was it slow. Download was 0.02mb/sec upload was 0.70mb/sec strange that upload was faster. But now I would like help to see what I should do next, Sprint tried to say it was hardware. Remember my phone is brand new just died insurance claim. I was thinking flashing a now ROM but thus time make sure I do it in fastboot first. Advice would be nice?

I know if your stock sometimes you can get a lemon I had a brand new evo 3d on launch day and the radio part of the phone went bad data sucked and at times wouldn't work... I wasn't rooted.. That was in a week of using the phone....
Another thing is if you know you msl and some of the program codes you could do that reactivate your phone hands free thing it might help you...
I did it back on the EVO back in the day.....
If I remember it was something along the lines of that ##data## edit msl and somewhere in that you could do a reset...
Do this at your own risk tho.... The worst thing that would happen is your phone might not reactivate and you would have to do it again online sprints site...
Yeah sounds about right with the lemon thing, other things are going wrong now that I'm stock. I did the mos thing once before with sprint actually three times before. When I first got it and later when it started tweaking.

SPRINT STOCK ICS OTA kernal

I had sprint S-ON, HBOOT 1.5 and did the "wire Trick" to obtain S-OFF. from there I flashed a stock GB sprint RUU and went on to get the OTA for the ICS update.
well, after that I was unable to make or receive calls and texts. a radio error kept popping up. I eventually took it to a sprint corporate store and was talking with the guy and it suddenly started working. I told him what i had done to get where I was. i asked why it started working suddenly without doing anything. he pointed out a yellow box in his store, and said I probably didn't get a signed kernel. whenever someone walks in to those stores they apparently scan the kernel and if its not signed then it will sign in. im not sure if this could be helpful to anyone but as of now everything is working fine on my phone. just wanted to throw that out there to help anyone that was in my same scenario . if any developers would like to see what changed on my kernel i am more than happy to help in any way i can.

No action was taken. My phone was was not sending or recieveing texts and no calls all night and into the morning (i was hoping it was going to fix itself over night like a network issue as I have read on some other forums). Its never a good idea to be so biased and fanboyish to automatically call this BS. However it is very very unlikely, for a few reasons;
The XDA/android dev community is so large, that we almost definitely have an active member of the forums that is a sprint employee that would have some knowledge of this magical yellow router.
Without them delivering an OTA to your phone while your standing there in the Sprint store, they would need to place your phone into bootloader mode. This is something that would be very obvious, and not something they would do without warning you to backup all of your files, and data, as well as possibly having the phone overnight.
To repair your issue, they would probably run a backup of your data, flash the stock RUU of the latest OTA, and then restore your data.
But.... you never know, right?
Like McDonald's old catch phrase -- "Do you believe in magic!?"
