[q] [req] note .apk - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im not sure if this is the right place to post this but i did a search first and came up with nothing... Im looking to see if there is a way to pull the note taking app/apk thats on the galaxy S phones and install it on another phone (my nexus) if anyone could help me out with this or point me in the right direction to get it, it would be greatly appreciated

Moved to Q&A

anyone have any input?

One reason (guess) why not many have input in this is it could also be done with paid apps from the market.

Need help rooting. :(

Hey guys. I finally traded up from an OG droid to a Galaxy S2 and can't seem to find an updated rooting tutorial. All of them have dead links or don't seem to work. I hope I don't get flamed for this but can someone please send me in the right direction? Thank you.

1st step: make sure what model Galaxy S2 you have (label under battery) as there are over a dozen different model phones called Galaxy S2. OG "Droid" is on Verizon, and Verizon doesn't carry ANY Galaxy S2 model. If you were on Verizon previously, that means you are in the US. If so, and you got a Galaxy S2 through a US carrier (ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile), I guarantee it is NOT the GT-I9100, which is the device this forum is for.
my phone is a gt-i9100. I live in alaska. I purchased it through a local phone company called GCI. I just feel overwhelmed with all the galaxy products out there. A little over saturated, but definitely a good phone. I just wanna root it like I did my Xoom and OG droid.

I had to ask. I'm in the US using a GT-I9100 as well, but the majority of US Galaxy S2 users are NOT on the GT-I9100.
You can root using a CF-Root kernel. Works perfectly fine, and installs CWM recovery for you as well. Just make sure to follow the instructions exactly.
Hey thanks. Honestly I like this phone so much I didn't really wanna root it, but my carrier will probably never officially support the ICS update and I miss having nandroid backups and tinkering around to get the most out of my phone. Thanks for the link.
No problem, but also please be aware of the forum rules. Rule #1 is to search before posting. Not everyone will be so generous.
I gotcha. Sorry for not searching as much as I could have. I have an issue, however. My kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKI3-CL577579 and the tutorial mentions KG1. Also, there's about a million files posted throughout the thread and I have no idea which is supposed to be for my device. I'm sorry if I'm asking for a handout. I just wish rooting was simpler like on my old phone. I'm sorry, and thanks again/

There's a "Help! Which file do I use ?" section in that thread. Sounds like you read that, since you mention the tutorial that mentions KG1. So you should be able to figure out which one to use based on that. I bolded the important part of your kernel version.
Alright. I found the right file and I'm rooted successfully! is there anything I can do to get rid of the triangle that shows up when I first boot up my phone? I'm totally psyched! Now I gotta search for a good ICS rom. lol.

*sigh*... rule #1 again. This is a question that's been answered literally more times than I have posts. There are many ways.
EDIT: of course, if you flash an ICS ROM, chances are good you will have the triangle again, in which case, there is no point in getting rid of the triangle now.

Turn the phone upside down while it's booting or put some paper over it.
Ha ha. Funny indeed. I know I had better start following the rules, and the yellow triangle isnt exactly a concern. This thread should probably be deleted due to my ignorance. For what it's worth, I'm extremely grateful for the help I've received. Lastly, anyone here on ICS or have a personal preference on what build to download? I'm kinda worried because I love EOS ICS on my xoom but gingerbread is so well optimized and I'm sure some apps won't work once I make the upgrade. So many more apps are compatible on my phone and I'm weighing out the risks.

Hey guys. I had one more little issue I wanted some direction with. Do I need APN Backup & Restore before I update? Also, I don't have enough room on my phone for a complete nandroid. Is rogue recovery compatible with the SGS2 or is there a way to configure CWM recovery to write a backup to the external card? Everything else is pretty much within my grasp. A million apologies and thanks for all the n00bishness.

How can I see many guys tried to help you but you never press thanks button, first learn to press thanks button and use SEARCH button before asking something
Alright everyone. I'll be more respectful of the rules and give thanks when its due but I have a dilemma because Ice sandwich doesn't give access to apn settings like previous incarnations and I feel really lost and worried that I'll mess my mobile internet up if I'm not careful.I also tried to research about making a nandroid backup straight to my external card without results. if this is the wrong place to ask can someone guide me in the right direction? Thanks.
You're saying you can't edit APNs on an ICS ROM? That's weird. The guy in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554967) sure sounds like he could edit APNs on an ICS ROM.
No. Thats not what I meant. Ive only ever edited the apn of my old phone with apn backup and restore. Apps don't have access to apn settings in 3.0 and up from the research I've tried to do. I didn't know how else to edit them. My xoom is wifi and my og Droid never made it past gingerbread so this was never an issue in the past. What do you do when you update? Write everything down and key it in after the upgrade? I have no problem doing so. I was just asking if theres an easier option. My only other issue is figuring out how to make a nandroid backup straight to my external SD card. I'm unfamiliar with recovery kernals for Samsung phones and cwm recovery doesn't let you access your external card so I hoped for advice on a better one. If I can't ask for help with these things here then I promise i won't keep coming back until I have more worthy questions. I could've done a lot more research in the beginning. If its better for everyone ill just see what happens on my own and if I screw up I screw up.

Not what you meant? But your follow up statement here makes it sound like exactly what you meant. Not very clear here...
EDIT to add: I should say - what I linked above is ONLY relevant because I used him as an example of someone who was indicating it was possible to edit an APN on an ICS ROM. Which seems to contradict, and yet NOT contradict, what you were saying. See my confusion?

There are several apps in the play store that back up and restore APN settings. But you probably won't need them. If you do a reset to default in APN settings, it should query your carrier for their APN settings, and just work.

[Q] build prop settings to get full market access.

I posted this in Q&A and got zero responses so please no flaming about posting this there.......someone here knows because i got the info from here long ago. What changes in builds prop are done to "trick" the market? Nexus S in somewhere....just can't recall. TIA.

I would also like to know that. I run mine at 200 DPI but and thats a little too low for the full market access.
It also pisses me off when I post a question in the proper section and no one responds.
Then bump the post in the proper section. Don't knowingly and willfully break the rules.

I bought the app LCD Density modder pro, it comes with a modifed play store that reports your LCD Density at 240dpi to the market.
This fixes the "App not compatible errors"
I've been flashing a lot of ICS roms lately and I was sick of booting ICS, running LCD modded, installing the modded files, rebooting... etc.. etc.. so I made myself a CWM zip file that I just flash right after I flash a rom.
Even tho it's a personal file, I gave LCD Density modded all the credit. Although I know of other sources the show you how to do the mods yourself. I don't know if I'm allow to post the CWM zip file here for you guys to download, or even if you do in fact want to download it.
So, if it's ok for me to post the file, can a mod let me know? Please and thanks. I will post it in the main form for others and let you guys know where it's too.
Thanks

Thank you for the response. I'll be sure to be more mature about my responses here. I wouldn't want anyone telling my 65 year old mother one me. I'd hate to have to explain all of that to her. I'll simply say puzzled from now on.

Sorry for not explaining it better (being the OP). It sounded very clear inside my head when typing.......and that is a problem I know!
When trying to download some apps in the Market (Crackle TV app for example) I get the error "this app is not compatible with your phone". There was a "trick" posted awhile back that by changing something in the build prop using a text editor that would make the market think I had a newer modeled phone and thus could get the apps to download.
I had run for months with the market thinking I had a Nexus I believe (again, sorry I can't remember what I had changed it to) for a long time with no issues, but these latest builds of ICS just aren't playing nice with the Play Store.
I truly thought it was a common thing people were doing with the fascinate in order to have full access to the market/play store. Thus, I just condensed my question thinking it was going to get multiple hits and a quick answer. My mistake there again.

S-Voice for Galaxy S II

Hi, I have searched for an answer and haven't had any luck. I know that the latest S-Voice App supposedly can't be installed on something other than a device running ICS. Found Here: http://www.xda-developers.com/tag/samsung-galaxy-s-ii/
However, I can't seem to get it to work. It keeps giving me an error: There is a problem parsing the package.
I'm guessing I can't install it because I'm not running ICS. Can anyone confirm this? as it has been mentioned, that it does work. Found Here: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/samsung-s-voice-ripped-for-the-world-to-enjoy/

I'm still waiting for ICS to come out for T-Mobile...I have not Rooted my Device yet, don't really plan on it yet, but am considering it in the far future...lol

OP, you realize that as a T-mobile USA user, who owns an SGH-T989, you are actually in the wrong forum for your device, right? (I've also noticed you've posted in the Epic 4G Touch forums as well...)
I've already tried to tell you once that you're posting in the wrong forums. I guess it's up to you to realize what you're doing.
I'm not saying it as a matter of you're not allowed to post here, but if you request ports, mods, firmwares or kernels, and you post in a device forum that ISN'T yours, people will link you to solutions that will NOT work for your phone, and in all likelihood cause you no shortage of headaches if you decide to follow their instructions or install stuff they link you to.
Your device (SGH-T989) has VERY different hardware from the GT-I9100 and the Epic 4G Touch (SPH-D710).
But it's up if you want to continue to post in other device forums.

[Q] how to uninstall cyanogenmod 10 from galaxy s2 i777 trackfone/straight talk

ok..so here's the problem i have a Samsung galaxy s2 i777 from track-phone/straight talk (im not sure what it is...) it was sold to me online i reset the whole phone and this cyangenMod thing keeps coming up when it boots up after the factory reset I don't want it on the phone but i have no idea how to uninstall it or get rid of it. i just want to get the phone back to how it came out of the box like a new phone but i'm at a lost i've tried the oden program and the phone wont connect to it. i don't know what files it needs or what i have to do i'm at a complete and total loss...
if someone could help me out with this it would be a REALLY big help to me thank you to anyone who reads this and an even bigger thank you to the person(s) who help.
Why would you want to get rid of CyanogenMod? It's quite possibly the best thing to ever happen to phones.
Especially if you're running cm10.1, it's 4.2.2

You want to get rid of it? Easy
Option 1: return it to seller, demand s/he send you another one with pure stock firmware on it, not a custom one or request for the refund.
Option 2: reverse back to stock (from CM) yourself. Since you're here, you should have read anyway, so read up those threads especially the stickies and DIY.

The other posters Actually have given you good advice, and it appears that they have pointed you to the place to answer your question! Really!
It sounds like you have a modified Straight Talk phone (please note that the ATT version is I777 and the ST version is S959G. It would be interesting to know whether you have an I777s or S959G).
IF you have an S959G, then your best bet is to check the thread posted down below as Phalanx and the others have mentioned --it's literally below the post you created (several posts below now, just look for the title "Straight Talk SGS2- SGH-S959G" (<- or click on these "straight talk" words)
It may seem frustrating to get a phone that is customized, and right now you just want a phone; However, you actually have one of the nicest and newest roms available for this type of phone!
IF your phone boots CM10.1 and you have the normal android screens, then you have everything that the ST or AT&T company would provide on a "normal" phone, but without some of the junk and advertising that often infects our phones! Try it out! The interface is not that much different from "stock."
Still, if you don't like your phone that way, YOU can fix it and it is not really hard, but just takes some reading and patience to gain understanding of the techniques and processes (learning the principles also is interesting! :laugh
But it will take you at least a few hours of reading, and a bit patience to scan through the Straight Talk links and pages. If you do that you'll see others who have your issue, and also others who turned the issue around to make it a plus!
A modified phone is more of a commitment than a stock phone -but it returns more to the user! Especially if you want to adjust it, enhance it, or appreciate it, you have to put in time.
If that's not for you -perhaps turn it around on ebay. But a working CM10.1 on a Galaxy S2 is a good machine!
Good Luck
Good Luck

I like the stock feel of the i717 with the samsung mms app and the samsung calendar app, touchwiz, etc. There are no official samsung updates after 4.1.2, but is it possible to get the samsung apps/framework working on cm11/cm10.2/AOSP somehow? It doesn't appear that anyone is too interested in doing this, maybe because the level of difficulty, but I would just like to know if it's possible. Maybe port a rom from a newer samsung phone? If its possible but not been done yet, i'm willing to do the work if someone will just point me in the right direction. Thanks.
P.S. This is a Q&A help section and I have done proper research before asking my question. No insults about my lack of knowledge please. I'm not asking anyone to do work for me, I just want advice. Thanks.
i think the problem is that you're one of the few people who like the samsung apps. a lot of people root their phones or install custom ROMs to have the ability to remove those apps.
good luck, though.

I'm always a minority lol. And I don't like all of them, just a few. Mainly the messaging app, samsung keyboard, and the gallery. And touchwiz with landscape mod is nice too. I just like the feel of a touchwiz rom but with samsung's 18 month support policy, the i717 is left hung out to dry...I wonder how hard it would be to just back-port a i747 rom? Thanks for the reply
