Hello everyone!
I like to fall asleep while hearing my favourite radio program on saturday nights (one of those about terror stories and paranormal stuff ), but usually I go very late to bed, so the program has finished already
So someday I decided begin to use podcasts, this way I can download the last broadcast and hear it. No problem with other phones but... when I tried this with my new HD2 and seen the battery consumption the next day...
At least in my case, battery consumption was terrible even in flight mode and with the podcast has finished and player has stopped, so I decided to find "something" to power off my phone when I fall asleep
I've been looking for a simple application that starts a countdown and finally shutdowns the device (similar to many others for PC), but only found big apps with complete scheduling for lot of things that I don't need (turn off and on phone, WIFI, 3G... but with a specific date and time in the calendar without possibility to set a timer to begin "right now"), or apps that do a simple shutdown but without previous timer. Doing my search I noticed that many people was looking for this same application.
Finally I decided to do it myself, and here is the result, a tiny application that does what I need. I've only tested in my HTC HD2, but it's supposed to work in all WM6.5 devices with framework3.5 installed.
Simply, set a countdown in minutes and press the START/STOP button. You can freeze the countdown at any time using this same button. Once the countdown has started, you can open other applications in your phone (MP3 player, podcast...). Notice that you have to do this without closing the TGShutdown application. If you try to close TGShutdown, a message will warn you that, if you close TGShutdown, countdown will be aborted. Turn off the screen, get into the bed and enjoy your music... when the countdown reaches zero, the device will shutdown. Sweet dreams!
Any suggestions or requests will be welcome.
Regards! (and sorry about my english )
UPDATED to version 1.1
* Fixed some issues
Psshutxp already do this, no?
Thanks for sharing!
Oh! I didn't knew about it At least, doing my own application made me to find the one I was looking for
I will compare battery consumption of both and I will use the most efficient
Thanks a lot!
Please let us know your results here
Gracias,
Thanks , it is a nice application.
Please could you implement a function in order to turn on the device based on time a date as per shutdown?
Thank you
Rom LEON-BK v2.0 RADIO ROM v2.15
I do not ... there is no calendar page with a white rectangle in which to place the minutes ... further down, start / stop ... but it works. ... I tried setting a minute .... and he died
a me non c’é nessun calendario…pagina bianca con un rettangolino in cui inserire i minuti…più in basso, start/stop…però funziona….ho provato impostando un minuto….e si é spento
Hello everyone!
I've just uploaded a new build of my application after some friend told me about some issues.
After doing a small test in order to compare the battery consumption for Psshutxp and TGShutdown, these are the results:
Tested in HTC HD2, flight mode, for 15 minutes each app, with Psshutxp or TGShutdown running alone (I mean, no other running application like MP3 playing or podcasts).
*** TGSHUTDOWN, consumed more than 0% but less than 1% (from 75% to 75%)
*** PSSHUTXP, consumed more than 2% but less than 3% (from 75% to 72%)
Obviously, visually, I like PSSHUTXP much more (mine it's only a textbox and a button), but the choice depends on the user priorities and needs. PSHUTXP has a beautiful look, mine has a very simple one in a flat window. But it seems, at least in an HTC HD2 and in a test of 15 minutes, than PSSHUTXP consumes more power.
I addition, I must say that psshutxp doesn't works for me I do not know if anybody has noticed the same problem: if your device enters in standby mode (in HTC HD2 is usually 3 minutes after you power off the screen but it depends on your personal configuration), psshutxp freezes the countdown and shutdown is never reached. For example, if media player it's continuosly playing, the device never enters in stand by mode so psshutxp works fine, but if you have a podcast or any song or stream with a specific lenght, once player stops, device will enter standby mode after 3 minutes and if psshutxp hasn't reached the final countdown, shutdown will never work. It's only a problem of me or it happens the same for everyone?
I will try to do a better and more realistic test next time (running applications for an hour and with MP3 player running).
In response to encounter and other users, I too have seen an image of a calendar when showing my application in some sites, but that's not an actual image of my app, so I have attached an image of TGShutdown togheter with the CAB in this same post.
I'm not thinking about adding any calendar to my app and no 'power on' function, as this app was designed only for a simple purpose: power off the device in order to save battery when we usually go to bed and like to hear some music/podcast/radio before sleep so, the simple the application is, the much less battery will eat.
Thanks a lot everyone, for all your interest!
Sergio.
Nice app.
What if I want TGShutdown to start automatically everyday at a given period of time, let's say everyday at 11.00p.m?
Is this possible?
You understand that I wish your app to automatically turnoff my HD2 everyday without manually starting the timer
Thanks
I use TGShutdown launched by a SK ScheMa script. It works fine on my HTC Touch2!!
Your program is super cool.Works perfectly and is exactly what I needed.
i agree, works perfect as advertised. i wish it can be better skinned.
i agree it needes better skin but it's still awsome

Hi guys,
Have had my Hero just over a month now and love the thing to bits...
The one thing (battery life aside) that pees me off though is that the phone can be slow at times...
It seems to stem from apps either opening themselves and running in the background, or not closing properly when I select to close them.
I seem to spend half my time using the phone in TaskKiller getting rid of everything that shouldn't be running before I can do anything.
Has anyone got any smart ideas on how I can improve the problems above?
I've also noticed when I switch the phone off and back on a) it improves things slightly, but b) it also runs lots of things that I don't need open so is there a way to stop things running on start up?
Thanks for the help guys.
To show you what I mean, I just restarted the phone and killed everything except:
WaveSecure Beta
com.google.android.apps.mapssomething that goes off the screen) - can't kill this
HTC Sense
Touch Input
com.htc.provider
Go back to it 10 minutes later and I also have the following open:
Settings
vizBattery
Wi-Fi Status
Google Mail
Thats without me touching it at all.... if I had also used the Twitter app, Facebook, messaging etc then they would all still be open, the browser and music player would probably be there too.
It's normal fo it to start some apps on its own, for example peep (htc's twitter program) the music player (only if you have a widget on one of the homescreens)
same goes for calander etc etc google mail is push so it has to be opened to recieve messaged realtime.
Things like batterystatus thingy's often drain your battery and sometimes slow down your device I suggest removing that.
Also I don't know about wifi status but can imagine that draining battery to since
I don't think that will be running without your wifi being on. When continuosly searching for networks your device also will slow down, and drain the battery
My english isn't perfect so I hope you understand what I'm saying.
edit: do you use the official t-mobile rom or a custom? Don't know if htc released the last update for t-mob devices. That update really improved almost everything
so if you don't have that it's ''normal'' for the device to lag.
Some apps register themselves to start automatically. Obviously Gmail needs to run if you're syncing a Gmail account.
There's at least one app (paid) that can override this - I believe it is called Startup Auditor.
However, for the most part, it doesn't really matter since many of the apps that appear to be "running" will not be consuming any CPU time (and by extension battery life) unless they are designed to run in the background.
In addition, as Stafflover has already said, I'd also suggest you try removing vizBattery - whilst I've no specific experience with this app, I've heard that many battery status widgets drain the battery significantly.
Regards,
Dave

Hey Pal! I had the same problem then I got into a bit of app development and understood. Some service need to be "broadcasting" and some other to be "listening". Best you can do is sometimes tell them how often to "wake up and check". But if you think about it, a program MUST be checking on a few things, at least sometimes, to give you the "android experience". Also, no matter how much you care about that number you see in the "free ram" widget (assunming you use taskiller with the widget), it is not very important until it REALLY does slow your phone down. Some apps are worse than others at clogging up or draining your battery: try them, weigh how useful they really are for you and then decide what to keep (running) Ciao!
Hi all - first post on xda - please be gentle ;-)
Can anyone suggest what may be the most stable setup on the HD2? the constant freezing is starting to make the phone unusable for me as I use it for work and before I move to something else I thought I'd ask some advice on a better setup.
I have had WM machines (pocket PC) for a long while mainly Ipaq and my last 4150 worked for years without a hitch - couple of screen taps and any info I needed was there quickly mainly excel spread sheets e-mails and schedule, the thing never missed a beat in years. The HD2 seemed the ideal phone replacement.
I have not gone mad with the phone it is pretty stock with a couple of usable mods (CHT and editor etc) every day or so, maybe twice a day I press the on button to bring up the lock screen and it freezes - always when I need it most - it freezes in a particular way ie I can see the taskbar at the top, MENU and PHONE on the bottom (which "react" when pressed but do not bring up the function) and blank screen in between - it needs a soft reset - I have installed the endkey long press which works but this always happens when I need the information quickly and waiting for it to reboot is not quick enough
I would dearly miss co0kies home tab and the couple of mods but if a standard ROM is the best so be it (was going to try the vodafone 1.72 ROM) - or is there a real stripped down ROM that is simple and stable removing all the baggage on the standard ROM. I've never done it but I'm not averse to having a go at cooking a ROM if it will get me what I need
I use all the "business" type functions - dont need twitter/facebook/footprints etc would really use the documents Tab
ROM 1.66.405.2 (76641) WWE
Radio 2.06.51.07
Manila 2.5.19211619.0
Co0kies home tab 1.8.5
CHT editor 1.8.5.1
Resco Registry add in
Resco explorer
Skype
SPB Backup
Avian waves BattlineSvc
Microsoft .NET CF 3.5
Windows marketplace
Each time it locks up I'm getting fed up of friends/colleagues swiping their Iphones at me going "look! mine doesn't do that"
I like the HD2 I'd like to be able to say "but yours doesn't do all this" with all the extra capabilities - instead I seem to be always rebooting - waiting for sense to launch
I don't want to lose the HD2 and its capabilities but If I cant get it to be a bit more stable the Desire is looking tempting or even (wash my mouth out with soap) an Iphone?
Any thoughts or suggestions would be really appreciated
My hd2 became unstable when i had cookies home tab, its been solid as a rock since I uninstalled it, give it a go, I don't miss it anyway.
oh, and if they want proof, my friend has had the same locking up issues on 6 replacement iphones. it crawls to a halt then refuses to react, so he has to wait until the battery goes flat as he can't reset it...
You might want to try moving up to the 1.72 wwe rom and try that with and without cht, perhaps even try rolling back to an older version of cht.
I used to suffer the lockscreen freezing on the stock 1.66 rom.
I cant remember if it persisted after moving to the 1.72 im afraid, I dont think it did though.....
Does it only freeze when using the cht lockscreens?
HardSPL your phone and flash-
http://www.vbnfiles.com/xda/g_lewarne/CleanEx/CleanEX%20Core655%203.50.7z
CHT works fine along with anything else I have thrown at the ROM!
Stable as a rock and is an excellent dive board into Android as well.
For extra "cut down" disable sense and run Resco today plug-in as your home screen.
I used to flash numerous times a week, but, I haven't changed a thing since 16th Aug and that's a record.
what version of CHT are you using as i had to revert back to v1.7 due to the latest one giving me problems...i would suggest to upgrade your Rom to 1.72 start fresh again and install all necessary apps you need one by one that way you can analyse if certain apps are conflicting causing the frezzing problem that you have ....if that doesnt work try a custom rom.

On the iPhone tell him to hold the sleep button + the home button for a few seconds... That should do the trick.
i had the exactly same issue on my second hd2 and had my phone sent in (also vibracall was sounding abnormally), i should get it back this week. i hope CHT works then, my first hd2 never had problems like that....
Thanks indeed for the info I did have a sneaky suspicion that CHT may be a problem, I will try the stock 1.72 and maybe try a few things one at a time see if it helps thanks again
ive had problkems that sound like that, the lockscreen disapears and you can see the screen you have behind, except you still have to slide to unluck . with the vbn rom my lockscreen problems dispaeared complelty. it still seemed to suffer from memory issues but for the most part it was stable.
i hardly use windows mobile anymore, as android is way more fun, and it never complains about not having anough memory
I would suggest couple of things:
- make sure, that all the additional icons (if any) and wallpapers used are in phone memory, i.e. not on sd card.
- using bsb tweaks You can disable wm 6.5 lockscreen and give s2u2 a try
I am completely new at this, I read that some say the battery drains too quickly over night while in sleep mode (running the vegan 5.1 rom), even when wifi, sync, etc. were shut off. Has anyone else experienced this? How is this compared with iPad? Thanks!
I'm too a bit concern about this issue. Does this problem occur on Vegan ROM only or other ROMs?
What about standard ROM?
Why not just plug it in overnight? Seems easy enough...
Well, it's all about convenience. I just don't want to remember to keep thingy plugged in overnight, every night...
With average usage about couple hours per day - single charge should lasts for 5 days.

I had to retrain myself when I got my HTC Incredible. I keep a charger at work, home and in both vehicles so I always have power available when I need it. Once I rooted, installed Hydra Kernel and got rid of the bloatware my battery uptime was significantly improved.
I suppose the bloatware on the stock ROM would cause some battery drain that would be helped by a custom ROM or at least removing the bloatware that you do not need.
Yup, that's the question. Which ROM has least amount of bloatware...

Depends on what you consider bloatware
VEGAn is pretty clean if you ask me, but I did stream line it a bit for battery life.
System app remover is awesome. No more using terminal to pull apks manually.
I Yank out the tts (text to speech) stuff
I pull streetview and gmaps (I can get directions from gmaps online if I need them)
I pull email and Gmail (the galaxy tab email port runs my Hotmail and Gmail from one app and I can tell it to never check unless I press the check button)
I pull the news and weather app (I can control update regularity with beautiful Widgets to sync once an hour as apposed to once a min with stock)
I gut out the stock browser and launcher after replacing them with dolphin HD and launcher pro.
There are more but since I already pulled them I can't exactly check
I get amazing battery life this way. If I shut it down when I'm done with it I can make it last all week on one charge at about 3-4 hours of moderate use a day.
I can use it all day heavily and put it to sleep at night and still wake up with 30+% battery.
Looks like gTab never goes truly asleep, just turned screen off. Some apps continue to work.
Thank you, I will give the systemapp remover a try.
This is where the Ipad and the Gpad are totally different. I can charge the ipad to 100% and wifi wll be turned on and I can turn it on a week later and the battery will be at 99%. The gpad with wifi turned off will be down to nothing in just a couple of days. Like someone said the thing is never off. I hate having to keep it plugged in all the time.

Under settings / about look at battery usage and you should be able to see what is using your battery.
I used system app remover to take out all my reduntant apps (launcher, browser, music player, ect) and set my wifi to turn off when the screen turns off and now my gtab just sips the battery.
I went to bed with it at 41% last night and checked it this morning as I was about to leave for work (8 hours later) and the battery was at 35%! Before I was losing almost 20% a night so this is a HUGE difference!
I'm going to try to optimize a little more when I get home. The only app running that I dont really need is the Amazon Market so I may get rid of that and see if that helps any. My goal is to get it to .5% battery drain per hour.

Setting the wifi to turn off with the screen is a HUGE power saver. When my gtab was draining a lot of battery I looked up the battery usage statistics and the wifi was using almost as much as the system idle!
I think right now I'm hovering at about .8% battery drain. I might turn off my RSS widget since I mainly use Pulse as my news source now. .5% here I come!
Well, I set WiFi policy to Off when screen is off and use Task Killer to shutdown every running process before putting tablet asleep and still battery loosing charge from 91% down to 77% in about 10 hours.
So, my numbers are about 1.4% per hour when gtab in "sleep" mode.
I check WiFi router and can see that gTab does switch WiFi off...
Question about that system app remover. How it removes redundant apps (say like stock email, music player, google search) from read-only system partition?
I thought that the only way to remove them is to rebuild and then re-flash ROM without those apps.
That's why apps like "Advanced Task Killer" etc. only kill processes from memory, but then Android re-launch them again.
I understand, that for phone not to fall deep into sleep is a feature, but for a tablet it's just a waste...

I installed "SystemApp Remover". It lists the apps in 2 categories "Regular Apps" and "System Apps". Regular apps are the ones you can remove normally without this app; the ones under "System Apps" are the build-in ones that you can not remove using the usual method. Once you select "System Apps", choose "Assist" in settings, and the app will highlight the system apps in 3 colors - green, yellow, red. Green=ok to remove; yellow=maybe ok to remove; red=removal not recommended.
I suggest you know what you're removing even for the green ones. The name of the app usually tells or just Google it. You can also back it up in settings before the removal.
I have removed some, not enough to test for results yet, but I've seen a few positive feedback from others. Just be careful while doing it, that's all.
Interesting, what is the most "power hungry" or better say - "refusing go to sleep" application?
I understand, this tests might be tedious to do. I think that the best candidates are those who are restarted on its own after Task Killer killed them..

Try "SystemPanel", it has a function that monitors which app uses the battery the most. According to its description, the monitor function uses about 1 minute of battery if it runs for a full day. And, the monitor function can be turned off and nothing else would run in the background from SystemPanel. There is a Free version as well.
Hello All,
My girlfriend just got a new Orange SGS2. The phone is great, really slim, fast at playing games, high linpack score etc.
However there is a problem that really bothers me, apps load pretty much instantly however when you press the home button they take ~6 seconds to close!
This happens with even the most basic apps such as the dialler or contacts and is very frustrating as I am sure the SGS2 should be performing better than this. My HTC Desire (and even my old HTC hero to a slightly lesser extent) closes apps pretty much instantly
Hope the gurus of XDA can help with this one.
Many thanks,
hopoffbaby
Okay, the reason your old phone shut them instantly was because it needed to free up resources.
The SGS2 is a far superior phone in terms of spec and as such it doesn't need to shut its apps the moment you hit home.
Android is very capable to say the least when managing its resources so stop watching the task-manager and RAM usage, don't use a task killer and just enjoy life with the SGS2 it'll never struggle.
Mine regularly has 15+ apps running in the background with no noticeable effect on its stunning performance.
Hi,
I think you have misunderstood me. I'm not talking about the kernel killing the apps to free memory, I'm talking about how long it take to return to the home screen after pressing the home (or back) button.
For example, I open the contacts app and it loads instantly. When i click the home button I can count to 6 (slowly) before I am back at the home screen.... It is incredibly annoying and I am sure it is not how Samsung intended??
Thanks again,
hopoffbaby
Should be instant .
You may need to factory reset after backing up data .
jje
Hi,
I was hoping to avoid a factory reset. I have read a few people are having issues (none seem to be as long as 6 seconds though) and that it may be related to the voice control or the touchwiz launcher?
Any thoughts on that?
thanks
Hi,
I toggled the driving mode on and off again and that seems to have go the delay down to around 2 seconds which is a massive improvement, although still not ideal I don't think. What I don't understand however is that the driving mode wasn't on in the first place so why did this make a difference?
Does anyone know what driving mode actually does?
Thanks,
hopoffbaby
Having been facing horrible battery drainage for a week - the phone left unplugged to overnight was loosing about 70% of battery charge...
In the morning in menu>>settings>>about phone>>battery>>battery use>>battery chart
AWAKE was showing continues blue line throughout the past night... and the fact that I had recently installed the other fifteen apps made the situation even more complicated :-(
Long story short, as result of analyzing battery use chart, System Panel app history tab, as well as uninstalling/installing my programs one by one, the application what was preventing my Amaze from going into SLEEP mode and draining its battery appx 8% per hour - was identified.
It turned out to be the Amazon AppStore - by the way downloaded from the official web site.
So, do not allow this fabulous app to remain in background (unless you do keep your dear amaze consistently plugged in), and after the use always kill it. Now I am treating it as follow menu>>settings>>apps>>manage apps>>Appstore>>"Force stop" followed by "Clear data" ;-)
However! Even after such my treatment it keeps 'working', the relevant chart in System Panel reads that - six/eight times a day the CPU is being loaded by this particular application!
O.K.
There has been one more app found among my operational environment able to prevent entering the SLEEP mode. It is IM+ Pro. This messager can run in two ways - Background mode and Push mode. When left in the Background mode it won't let our device to enter SLEEP, cousing the similar battery drainage as Amazon AppStore does.
O.K.
Merci beaucoup! for reading my post . & I am happy to add, that now my phone battery consumption in the STAND BY is for sure below 1% per hour .. left unplugged till morning the device is loosing no more that 4%, in fact the signal reception quality line is never marked with green color on the overnight chart in 'Battery Use'.
P.S. Worthy to be also mentioned, during my checks and playing around with System Panel, there have been spotted the apps, what if left running in background (with eather status - 'active', 'cashed' or 'service-only') on one side allow the device going into the SLEEP but on the other keep repeatedly loading CPU around 0.5 - 2.0 % each, what in my opinion is already battery consuming.. The spotted apps are: eBay Official App, Text Free, Control Panel, Maps, Startup Manager & HeyWire.
P.P.S. Probably no need in synchronizing emails frequently during night time - such task is pretty much battery consuming too.
I'm using quicksense 2.1.2. Left it on last night at 79% then in the morning, 74%
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using xda premium
Thanks!
Thanks for reporting this, i would have never guessed it because the only task manager i have is the factory htc one. I was wondering why my battery would drain so much, i would unplug it at 100% and a few minutes later it would crawl down to 94%(with the anker battery). I uninstalled it and now lets see how different my battery is.

Good post for giving people some great starting points to help solve some of these problems.
One thing to note: I have the Amazon App Store as well, but no battery problems. My device is rooted and, it's likely, that it's not entirely the app's fault that it's draining the battery, but rather something between the app and Sense not playing nicely.
I've had several apps that would either labor the processor or crash when sense was running that run fine now that rooted.
