Im so pissed right now, thats impossible to describe. or i am the unluckiest person in the world, or this glass is a ****.
Ok, i carried the phone in my pocket without screen protector for a month, no scrachs, but now, the FIRST TIME! the phone fell down.. from about 1 meter AT MOST, on a stone floor...
IT SMASHED IN ONE THOUSAND PIECES!
how can a 100gr phone have the power to in 1meter, smash an "almost" indestructible glass? what the **** was that?
if it was scrashed, if it EVEN got a damage on the screen, but one thousand pieces?
Not to mention that i got an Otterbox...
Well im now thinking in taking a new phone, gona fix this one first.
any sugestions of a better phone? dont say sgs2, needs to be now
thanks and sorry for the angry... if anyone wants i can post a pic of the totally **** it became

I agree with jamesd, it is like a windshield on a car, it will not shatter. Also, Gorilla glass is not indestructible, just much harder to scratch and break. go look at the website!
is there a possible it can be a refurb w/o gorila glass? gonna try to find the cam now, if i cant, i will take some pics tomorrow with my girlfriend phone

You mean just for cost reasons? Its not indestructible, but theres no doubt its better than regular glass.
Cant be scrached doesnt mean it cant be shattered. It all depends on the material's physical property. Nexus s would be ur best bet for t mobile or vibrant 4g

what about an desire hd?
Gorilla Glass is much stronger than regular glass but is not unbreakable. It's strength also depends on how thick it is, which varies from one application to the next. If Samsung used a thinner layer either because of expense or to keep the device thinner, it may explain why these screens tend to shatter pretty easily. I will say that I've had my phone for 6 months, have never used a screen protector, and don't have a single scratch anywhere on the screen.
I dropped my phone and it got a crack. It costs $80 to repair

the problem is that i not live in us, and this phone doesnt have support by samsung here, so i will have to buy the lcd+digitizer and fix it myself, ending in about 130 usd

I see friends phones with the screen protectors on them and no matter how good of a job you do a screen protector looks like ****!
new Phone
Dude get the nexus s, roms and over clocks are gonna be sick. plus they curved the screen a bit, so if it falls, the edges of the phone hit the floor instead of the screen.
Gorilla glass is scratch proof but not more resistant the breakage. And the fact that the glass is end to end, an impact on the side can travel to the side of the glass, where its most susceptible to breaking into pieces, like it happened to you...
I did throw my phone twice on the wall out of anger, didn't happen to my phone luckily... Ur drop must be a peculiar type directly at the weakest point... Silicon cases, ur best bet next time... I had one on when I threw the phone...

Dude, Gorilla glass is a mix-design that makes the glass surface very hard and the material 3 times more flexible than normal glass........BUT.... it still is glass and if you drop any glass and it hits just right .....the glass breaks. Since this type of glass is also a tempered variety when it breaks it shatters.
Me ? I have dropped my phone from 10 feet and nothing so, I ll chalk it up to you being lucky........or unlucky I should say............

Suck dude, that just HURTS to see!
Dude, that totally sucks. I'm sorry to hear about this but it is indeed made with gorilla glass. GG is not shatter proof it merely is tougher to resist scratches minor impacts. Hope you at lease have TEP on it. Then again anyone with a glass faces smartphone should have TEP. Good luck with a replacement!
Ya, my evo had gorilla glass and did the same thing.
Loving this Mopho!
I agree, that just hurts seeing that.
Hope you get a replacement soon.
TS
Sorry man! It happens when we least expect it. That's what TEP is for. Hopefully you have it, if not you better hurry up and sign up for it at your local corporate Sprint store or you can call Sprint. Otherwise get your checkbook out and get ready to pay full retail or get the screen replaced if the phone still works.
Yeah its funny when I see ppl say "OMG its not gorilla glass because I dropped it and it shattered". Gorilla glass means that it resists scratches and able to protect it against some minor impacts.
There isn't a phone or tablet out there that can survive a fall from like an apt building. Word of advice, get a case next time on your phone and a screen protector.
yeah i have the tep but i was thinking maybe warranty it since it's less than a week. The fall was less than a foot. oh well we will see what they say and i will let you guys know what happens. What pisses me off is it is going to take forever to get my apps back on it. Just the outter glass shattered I wish they could just replace the glass.
GG isn't about avoiding impacts/shattering. It's about avoiding scuffs and scratches to the screen's surface. We need Corning or 3M or somebody to come up with "FUBAR-resistant" screen protection. That would super-groovy!
EDIT -- Hopefully the good folks over at cnn.cn will provide us Photon nerds with some replacements components soon.
Less than a foot? Did it land on a diamond spike?

No but it was concrete and what's better it didn't land on the screen it was face up.

So I think A: You should be able to still enroll for TEP insurance if its within the 30 days, B: I also think it's open enrollment so if you dont have it, call in and have them add it don't mention the screen, then call back in a couple days and file a claim. Keep in mind i think it's insurance fraud but more power to ya!

lol, not to be rude, but why does everyone think that just because it's "unbreakable" means it won't break, everything breaks no matter what you try to do it.....except a cockroach....now if only we could make so type of material....*back to the lab*
^ this is true. I knew that the EVO had Gorilla glass because I saw one or two videos with some guy attempting to scratch it with his keys and there was no damage, but I also heard that its not like other Gorilla glass devices and proof of that is that when my EVO fell to the ground and got destroyed in a million pieces, the replacement phone no less than a few days of getting it got a nice 1 inch curved scratch on the glass when I forgot to take my keys out of my pocket and placed the phone in there.
Hopefully the Gorilla Glass on the Photon is of better quality. Regardless, don't let it fall to the ground.
TS
I've only had the Photon for 24 hours but I'm loving it. I'm pretty sure if you drop this phone it's going to shatter your screen. So hold in tight guys. Is there some sort of option for auto correct on the Photon keyboard?

I did email the company and they told me to email HTC, HTC said they don't warranty screen damage cause by outside factors....blah blah trust me I did the deep one wobble my fingernail play fruit ninja so I know what I am talking about. The one at the bottom is not as deep but it the length of the screen that I normally pull my the lock ring. I don't even have fingernails really so i don't get it, I have seen videos of people taking a knife to a screen and keys. Maybe so. But, all screens are made from glass and no matter how long (or how hard for that matter) the nails are growing from your fingers it is virtually impossible for them to scratch the glass of your phone's screen. For your fingernails to be capable of scratching the screen they would then have to be harder than the glass used to make the screen. So, if your fingernails are that hard then you should be able to also scratch the glass in the windows of you home or the glass mirror in your bathroom. Give those two a shot and let us know how it turns out. If you are indeed successful; then call Guinness World Records and Ripley's.

Gorilla glass does nothing as far as preventing scratches, the glass is to prevent cracking when dropped so it doesn't look like an ifail that hit the ground from 2 feet.
Its anti scratch not scratch resistant. its glass, it will scratch eventually.

You might want to check what gorilla glass does or doesn't, it's scratch resistant as well as tougher overall.
the iDevices also use corning
And now that i think about it, the scratches i'm seeing might be to the oleo-phobic layer and not the glass itself.

I think you got that backwards.
I don't know if its actually "gorilla" glass. But I dropped my phone from about 4ft and it landed screen down on cement. Only damage was a few knicks out of the plastic edges, but the screen is completely intact. Its also survived in my pocket with my car keys and a few other nasty drops.
There's a great youtube video online of the SGII vs the Iphone 4s in a drop test from a couple of feet on concrete. The SGII does well whereas the Iphone has numerous cracks
According to Gorilla Glass reps it's pretty safe from scratches from more "organized" objects. Like metal keys, knife in the demo, stuff like that. But they say randomly assembled things like rocks, concrete, asphalts etc will scratch it. There's a YouTube video floating around.

I wonder how an iPhone with those bumpers cases would do.
I see so many shattered iPhones and iPod Touchs come in at work for repair I don't know why the hell parents are still buying these for their 12 year old kids heh. just to clarify from previous posts, the iphones/ipods do indeed have corning glass which can be pretty safely assumed to be gorilla glass based on numerous articles including this one here:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/02/apple-name-drops-corning-as-iphone-glass-manufacturer-we-feign/
also, i can't remember exactly where i read the article but i believe that apple basically invented the use for gorilla glass. i believe it was in the new york times or something or other in an article about the steve jobs biography which explained how corning initially approached apple about using this new highly scratch and shatter-resistant glass they had just developed but had no idea what use it could have.
the iphone at that point was due to launch in 6 months or so and corning insisted that the glass wasn't going to be ready yet but steve jobs being steve jobs pushed them hard to get it ready in time. so up until only 6-9 months before release the iphone prototypes had all used plastic screens.
don't quote me on any of this but if my memory serves me correctly this is roughly the story they reported

Partially correct, I think. Yes, i-phones do have corning glass (gorilla glass, even if not by name). No, it wasn't invented for apple. Corning invented it in the 60s, but couldn't find a use for it until Jobs called looking for something better after getting frustrated with scratches on his plastic-screened prototype. Corning proposed the product as a solution (not yet branded gorilla,as I recall), then did indeed have to scramble to get it produced on a short timeline.

Should I attempt an exchange? I know it's ultimately my fault...but do I have options? I have insurance but I'm looking for a freebie or cheapie.

Something that can go through Gorilla Glass won't be stopped by a flimsy screen protector. It would have made no difference.
Not a lot you can do. Some people say putting a screen protector over a scratch can hide it some extent.
Replacing the screen on the cheap is out of the question. It's basically attatched to another part which means you have to replace two parts.
I don't have a screen protector, starting to think I should!

Of course a screen protector should have helped. Just a tiny bit of sand can ruin the screen completely. With a screen protector just it should have been wasted and not the screen

Same here, I take real care of my mobiles. My old i9000 doesn't even sport one scratch after two years while the i9300s screen is littered with them. Not really sure why though, but I think it might be the flip cover. (tiny bit of sand on it and bye bye screen)
Right now I am not too bothered with it, I'm going to get the screen replaced in two weeks.

I was wondering too if it was weaker on the SGS3 but probably not. I was hoping they had some sort of fix for scratches. I know clear nail polish will remove a scratch on glass albeit temporary. I may see how that works. It still baffles me though that 2 years and no scratches on the droid x and 3 days and I got a nice deep one on this newer phone. I guess I just had bad luck.
For the person who wrote about fraud...you're a douche. Verizon had no problem downgrading me from unlimited after I upgraded well before the expiration. I did get that back with a phone call, but they had no problem attempting fraud. If there was a known minor issue with the first release phones you bet I would try to work that into getting a new one and pretend as if the flaw was affecting my usage. I know that's a stretch but there are some smart people on this forum who can think of just about anything.

Not a lot you can do. Some people say putting a screen protector over a scratch can hide it some extent.
Replacing the screen on the cheap is out of the question. It's basically attatched to another part which means you have to replace two parts.
I don't have a screen protector, starting to think I should!

Yes applying a screen protector will hide scratches,I have them in my phone,I was very careful with my phone and I got them! I put a screen protector and you can't see them, yes it makes the phone not look that great but it's better then scratches!

Your argument is that this should not be happening on gorilla glass, especially not on 3rd gen glass. It's a faulty glass, some of the white ones had bad gorilla glass and was easy scratched.i have never used a screen cover and never had a scratch (2 sgs,2 gs2 +1 gs3) over 2 year period.
and it should be replaced be the phone warrenty and not the insurance.
This is your argument,if they eat it or not that depends.
Do you think I could exchange my 16gb phone for a 32gb phone? Just say I want the bigger one. I'm still within the exchange dates correct?
They are going to say it's not scratch proof
