I've come across a rather annoying problem with the HD2 and Activesync.
This has happened twice now in the space of 3 days.
I used task manager to kill all tasks on my HD2 to clear all running programs, including a instance of Activesync, however afterwards I can't start Activesync on the HD2. It opens, and displays the normal top bit of the Activesync screen, but the bottom half is stuck on the HTC Sense page, then ActiveSync exits. Repeat attempts at starting Activesync result in the same, it just won't start.
I've tried turning on the Data Connection tab in the comm manager, since I use google sync, but when I do, it just brings me to the mail configuration page, it's almost like Activesync has become corrupted. This has happened twice now after owning the HD2 for over a year. ( Which I have to say has been a problem riddled year of HD2 ownership).
Does anyone have any ideas? Is there anyway to reinstall just the activesync part of the system without an annoying hard reset?
put Android...
no try soft reset..
i was 100% ms before, but now with Android... my life with my smartphone has changed!!

I have been experiencing some issues when trying to connect and synchronise my XDA2 with my desktop and I was wondering if it was a known issue. Firstly, the XDA2 has had it's ROM updated to 1.60.50.
The problem is when I try to connect to ActiveSync 3.7.1 more often than not, it connects, user authenticates and shortly after disconnects before it even starts synching. The only time I can guarantee it will work is when I re-install ActiveSync 3.7.1 and bond the devices for the first time. Eventually I isolated it down to a problem with the XDA2:
I have two means of synchronising - with the USB cradle and via a bluetooth dongle therefore it is not a case of a faulty cradle. The USB's on my computer are USB 1.1, not the latest USB 2 but I do not see that as an issue.
After a hard reset of the XDA2 and no extra software installed, I still experience the problem so it is not a software issue, which only leaves a problem with the XDA2. There is a possibility that the user authentication fails and that is the reason it disconnects but I would expect an error message telling me so - is this the case?
So in summary, connects when re-install activesync 3.7.1 and will continue to reconnect while the computer is turned on. But after you turn the computer off and restart it, more often than not when you attempt to synchronise, it opens the port, connects, user authenticates and then suddenly stops. The signal bar changes to the connected columns and then back to the normal radio columns.
Have there been any issues like this before?
Activesync XDA II problems - a coincidence ?
I have exactly the same problem. I'm not sure exactly when it started, but I think it was about a week ago.
I've done hard resets on the XDA and tried everything I could think of, but still can't get it working. Up until about a week or so ago it was all working fine and had been for months.
Some of the things I have tried have been :
- hard reset the XDA.
- uninstall activesync 3.71, delete the activesync dir, download a fresh copy and install.
- do the above but using version 3.7
- delete partnership.
- delete the PPC device from Device Manager and start again.
- switch off AV software, firewall etc
- uninstall and re-install Outlook 2000.
- uninstall Outlook and install Outlook 2002
- Tried connecting using IR instead of USB
- Tried BT but the port sets itself up as COM10 which AS cannot see !
- numerous other things that I won't bore you with !
Nothing works. I get a brief glimmer of hope and then it packs up again.
I'm using a Toshiba Satellite Pro with XP Pro and I was at the point where I was about to back up back up my personal files and use the system restore disk on it. I was chatting to a friend this afternoon and mentioned my problem. He told me that there are a number of people in his office, all of them have XDA II's, and all of them have got this exact same problem. All of them had a working and stable Activesync until about a week or so ago and now NONE of them can get connected and have the same problems that you described.
This seems more than a coincidence to me and doesn't sound to me like an XDA problem. Could this be some Microsoft updates / patches that have screwed things up ?
BTW - the XDA seems rather useless when you can't get any software or data in or out of it !

I also had exactly the same problem for me.
I tried everything, nothing worked.
I had to make a hard reset then reinstall manually all the software (backup didn't solve the problem too).
Now, everything is OK,...so far!
ActiveSync problems
I think the difference is that both myself and the guy that started this thread have done hard resets and it still doesn't work.

I think I have found a routine whereby it seems to work (although this could be all nonsense).
Right click on the activesync icon and open it, click on Options, do nothing and close the dialog box (that part probably isn't necessary), now try to sync from the XDA2. Using a bluetooth dongle to sync, this now works everytime (so far)
I thought you had cracked it. It synchronised ok, but then dropped the connection shortly afterwards. It's now back to sitting with the spinning green wheel and the message 'Connecting ...', which never actually connects. The XDA displays a message box saying 'Communications Error', 'Cannot start communications with the desktop computer. Re-connect your device. If the problem persists, see Microsoft Activesync Help'. Which is a fat lot of good !
It's all back to where I started !

My SPV C550 (HTC Hurricane, Windows Mobile 2003 SE) has never had any trouble synchronising data with Activesync on my XP desktop PC.
Now that I have a Vista (business) laptop, I am forced to use WMDC (Windows Mobile Device Center). I plugged in my phone via USB, and after briefly showing up as an "Unidentified Device", Vista found the driver automatically and installed it as a "Smartphone USB Sync" (version 6.1.6965.0). Leaving it plugged in, I then installed WMDC version 6.1. The main GUI came up, and my device connected successfully. I'm able to browse the contents of the device and the storage card, and also add and remove programs.
The problem is that whenever I try to sync my Outlook 2007 data, the response from Vista sync center is merely "Sync Failed". The error proerties window is blank, other than the date and time the error occured. When I disable all options (contacts, calendar, tasks, email) bar one, the error properties window states "Contacts: Attention Required", where "Contacts" is whatever I left enabled. None of these errors appear in the system/application event logs. Disabling all options produces a "successfull" sync, but as you can imagine this is not of much value to me.
I am not using any kind of firewall software (including OneCare), and all the required services are running (including "Windows Mobile-based device connectivity" and "Windows Mobile-2003-based device connectivity").
Another device (i-mate JASJAR, Windows Mobile 2005) was able to sync successfully first time with no problems at all.
I have so far tried:
- Restarting the laptop
- Soft resetting the phone
- Plugging the phone into different USB ports
- Deleting and re-establishing the partnership
- Reinstalling WMDC
- Reinstalling Office 2007
- Updating the driver for the "Smartphone USB Sync" to various others (both from HTC and Microsoft).
- Hard resetting the phone
All have produced the same result: "Sync Failed". Now I'm out of ideas, and I'd really appreciate some suggestions on this.
vista syncing problems
hello,
I tried syncing using druvaa inSync and it worked.

i have had a lot of grief with this too as has 1000's of other people. Ive trawled through threads on various forums and there seems to be no guaranteed solutions.
I have a HTC HD touch and i am never confident of being able to place a tick in the boxes for syncing outlook items.
For a while, going into control panel and 'repairing' wmdc worked, with the device unplugged. but that stopped working too. A complete uninstall and reinstall of WMDC seems to be the only way to ensure a reasonable chance of everything being tickety boo. However, even that sometimes doesnt work and that requires a good half hour of my time.
I would be interested in knowing the actual process that the syncing does, as it must be intererupted by something in order for it not to work consistently. Microsoft itself hasnt an answer and just advises reinstalling. I know it looks at the outlook pst file but how it processes it, i am unsure.
In order to not lose all my contact details on the phone i now have them all saved to my sim, but losing the emails, tasks and calendar on my phone, is a real pain.
Perhaps one day someone with the tech knowhow will make a project of this and we can all benefit from having 100% confidence in things happening when we plug in that usb cable.
I have the same problem too
I haven't found an answer. Has anyone resolved this?
HTC says that they are aware of it and are taking it very seriously (never a good sign) and that they plan on having a fix for it someday (also never a good sign), but the don't have any idea when (a really really bad sign), and were unable to even give a time range for it being fixed.
I really like my TP2, but at the rate I'm going with it I'm ready to give it flying lessons.
I have a sprint HTC TP that i have modded with numerous different WM 6.5 ROM's. After the flash is complete i usually sync the phone with the exchange server at my office to get my contacts, email, etc. The exchange server forces me to use a simple password to lock my phone after 15 minutes so in the event its stolen after 10 failed attempts at entering the password it will wipe the phone. WM 6.5 automatically enables the slide lock so when my phone is off for a period of time it locks via the windows slide lock and the exchange simple lock. every few days when i turn on my phone i get a message that the device will be erased after the next unsuccessful logon attempt also the swipe lock button says slideslide and doesnt work. I have to perform a soft reset and when the phone boots back up it erases everything including my SD card. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried Juicy 7, db and a few others but i dont have their names. They all produce the same errors. Im trying not synching my exchange account to see if the simple password is the culprit. Any help would be appreciated.

I use this rom and it doesn't SLIDE lock when i turn the screen off... It goes right back to the home screen.... So it might help you.
Its funny you mention that ROM because thats the exact one im currently using and on my phone it does automatically use the slide lock.
The lock feature in WM6.5 has been an issue since the start. I have seen a few roms in BA and Fuze that work rather well with it (including with the exchange server), but I have seen a crap-load of reports from people with similar issues to yours. I don't know how far advanced the 6.5 development is for the Herman, but if I were you I would probably stick to Mighty 4 Reborn, Fallen 2.1, or some other 6.1 rom. Stay away from 6.5 if you must use the rom for heavy, work-related, daily use.
Also, take out the SD card before SR if you see that the phone is telling you that it will format your storage. Good luck!
Thanks egzthunder1 i think thats what ill have to do.
JSYK i did some additional testing and the culprit appears to be active sync. I set up the lock using a simple password and had no problems. Then i added gmail account with lock and also had no problems. I connected to exchange server with direct push and the problem started re-occuring.
same issue

Another thing I figured out was it happen on every Monday night around 8:00PM to 10:00PM. If anyone know how to fix or solution. that will be appreciated.
This happens very often
Hi,
this is phone independent issue,
I've already opened thread for it - till now no solution:

I am wanting to update my hd2 to the rom they pushed out a week or so ago. I installed activesync 4.5 on my computer, but when i plug my phone into my computer, it does not recognize the phone and nearly all of the buttons on the activesync window are greyed out. My computer recognizes the phone and I can get into the storage card on the phone, etc. but activesync just doesnt work. When i first got my phone I used the internet sharing function to get my computer online, if that matters at all. I also have used the multimedia twist program to sync up my music with the phone.
I am at a loss, and quite aggravated how not user friendly this process is for me. Can anyone help?
My computer is running fully updated win xp, sp3. I read something about needing outlook to import contacts, and I have office 2007 installed also.
Here's some advice, don't upgrade to the TM latest ROM rather get one of the other roms available on this site.
I cant tell you how much time I've wasted trying to get activesync to work, just when things seem to be going smoothly, bam, it stops and short of re flashing the rom sometimes it just will not recognise the phone. Or it hangs on some date from a meeting years ago and refuses to sync so being so frustrated and fed up I took the plunge and put Android on the phone.
It's a little bit of a pita to sync outlook to your google account but once you figure that out it's smooth sailing and you'll never look back. Android works, the chefs have done an incredible job, it's seamless, elegant and makes you wonder why MS should ever be used.
If you still want to mess with activesync, go through a hard reset and pair it again with the PC and wait until it reloads all your data - talk about a pita.
Hi
I have an unlocked UK Leo that has the tmobile software on it which I used on the O2 network (phone only; no internet).
Its just over a year old and has started trying to connect to tmobile on the internet. It tries about once or twice /hr to connect. Sometimes, if I haven't used the phone for a few hours, I'll have to cancel several of these attempts to connect. Worst of all, if there are several cancels waiting and the phone rings, the HD2 locks up and I cannot answer the call. Removing the battery seems the only way to get the phone to work again.
I could flash a standard ROM but HTC tell me that will invalidate the warranty (and its already been back for repair once)
So is there some other way I can stop these attempts to connect to tmobile?
(I cannot find anywhere to remove the tmobile connection and it is not listed in connections)
If there's nothing in 'connection' settings, then it has nothing to connect too.
I can't quite remember the way to go there, but in connection settings, there is an option saying 'edit my connections'.
Tap and hold the connection and choose 'delete'
In the other screen there's the same connection name again, but with the option 'delete settings'.
That should do it.
I don't have my phone with me unfortunately (I wasn't running WM 6.5. anyway anymore ), but this should be some sort of the way to go there
Its probably because something is set to auto update every few hours.
Peep/email/weather/facebook/3rd party app etc etc..........
Make sure everything that can update is disabled.
If you dont use the phone for data then you could use something like "touch tools" or a similar app to disable the data connection.
As you said, you coukd flash a new rom, you can always flash back to stock if you need to send it in for repair.
HSPL it and flash the 1.66WWE ROM (or any custom ROM you like) - That'll get rid of the T-Mobile UK guff. Install NoData - which can stop all phone line data connections, but leave WiFi still operational.
I think the problem of random phone data connections is to do ActiveSync, on the phone, starting up. The only thing I noticed that it stopped after the 'clock going forward' problem's soloution of stopping the automatic Time Synchronisation. Once I downloaded HTC's solution and restarted the Time Synchronisation, the clock problem was gone but ActiveSync randomly started up again. So I stopped the Time Synchronisation. ActiveSync will start up when I connect to a PC, whether to sync with the PC or use as a DiskDrive.
I don't use ActiveSync on the phone to check for mail updates, as I have set my phone up to do that for myself.
KrewsialNL: There is nothing in Start->Settings->Connections->Connections->manage existing connections. Sadly it does not stop it trying to connect to t-mobile server. That is the problem
conantroutman: Possibly. However, when it is trying to connect, Task manager shows only activesync running.
fred-up: Flashing a standard ROM is fine; flashing the original RoM if the phone is broken could be tricky depending on the break!!! And how do I get to keep a copy of the original ROM?
It seems when it happens that connection manager and active sync are (generally) running running but what started them off. AFAIK, all updating applications are switched off. Ive noticed a few times 'Direct Push' is busy switching itself off (green to grey) but have no idea what switched it on. I dont use Outlook and all data services are switched off.
Any ideas what might be triggering this or it is an evil TMobile plot?
You don't need to keep a copy of the origional ROM as you can download it from HTC's website using the phone's serial number.
If you flash it via the SD Card method, then the HSPL will be removed. You could also flash it via the PC and then run HSPL2 and select the SPL version for the ROM you download (1.66.0000 for the T-MoUK 1.72 ROM).
I can't tell you if it is a T-MoUK evil plot because My T-MoUK HD2 lasted a week before I flashed it to the 1.66 WWE ROM (after flashing HSPL). T-MoUK took another couple of months to bring out their version of the 1.66 ROM (1.72).
Have you got any Live services installed (MSN or Hotmail) as these use the Direct Push?
Not AFAIK.
It was all fine until (roughly) its first birthday and then this problem. I have not installed anything for ages so I am confused.
HTC escalated this over 2 weeks ago and I have, as usual, heard nothing.
I think its probably ROM flashing time.
