I have been experiencing some issues when trying to connect and synchronise my XDA2 with my desktop and I was wondering if it was a known issue. Firstly, the XDA2 has had it's ROM updated to 1.60.50.
The problem is when I try to connect to ActiveSync 3.7.1 more often than not, it connects, user authenticates and shortly after disconnects before it even starts synching. The only time I can guarantee it will work is when I re-install ActiveSync 3.7.1 and bond the devices for the first time. Eventually I isolated it down to a problem with the XDA2:
I have two means of synchronising - with the USB cradle and via a bluetooth dongle therefore it is not a case of a faulty cradle. The USB's on my computer are USB 1.1, not the latest USB 2 but I do not see that as an issue.
After a hard reset of the XDA2 and no extra software installed, I still experience the problem so it is not a software issue, which only leaves a problem with the XDA2. There is a possibility that the user authentication fails and that is the reason it disconnects but I would expect an error message telling me so - is this the case?
So in summary, connects when re-install activesync 3.7.1 and will continue to reconnect while the computer is turned on. But after you turn the computer off and restart it, more often than not when you attempt to synchronise, it opens the port, connects, user authenticates and then suddenly stops. The signal bar changes to the connected columns and then back to the normal radio columns.
Have there been any issues like this before?
Activesync XDA II problems - a coincidence ?
I have exactly the same problem. I'm not sure exactly when it started, but I think it was about a week ago.
I've done hard resets on the XDA and tried everything I could think of, but still can't get it working. Up until about a week or so ago it was all working fine and had been for months.
Some of the things I have tried have been :
- hard reset the XDA.
- uninstall activesync 3.71, delete the activesync dir, download a fresh copy and install.
- do the above but using version 3.7
- delete partnership.
- delete the PPC device from Device Manager and start again.
- switch off AV software, firewall etc
- uninstall and re-install Outlook 2000.
- uninstall Outlook and install Outlook 2002
- Tried connecting using IR instead of USB
- Tried BT but the port sets itself up as COM10 which AS cannot see !
- numerous other things that I won't bore you with !
Nothing works. I get a brief glimmer of hope and then it packs up again.
I'm using a Toshiba Satellite Pro with XP Pro and I was at the point where I was about to back up back up my personal files and use the system restore disk on it. I was chatting to a friend this afternoon and mentioned my problem. He told me that there are a number of people in his office, all of them have XDA II's, and all of them have got this exact same problem. All of them had a working and stable Activesync until about a week or so ago and now NONE of them can get connected and have the same problems that you described.
This seems more than a coincidence to me and doesn't sound to me like an XDA problem. Could this be some Microsoft updates / patches that have screwed things up ?
BTW - the XDA seems rather useless when you can't get any software or data in or out of it !

I also had exactly the same problem for me.
I tried everything, nothing worked.
I had to make a hard reset then reinstall manually all the software (backup didn't solve the problem too).
Now, everything is OK,...so far!
ActiveSync problems
I think the difference is that both myself and the guy that started this thread have done hard resets and it still doesn't work.

I think I have found a routine whereby it seems to work (although this could be all nonsense).
Right click on the activesync icon and open it, click on Options, do nothing and close the dialog box (that part probably isn't necessary), now try to sync from the XDA2. Using a bluetooth dongle to sync, this now works everytime (so far)
I thought you had cracked it. It synchronised ok, but then dropped the connection shortly afterwards. It's now back to sitting with the spinning green wheel and the message 'Connecting ...', which never actually connects. The XDA displays a message box saying 'Communications Error', 'Cannot start communications with the desktop computer. Re-connect your device. If the problem persists, see Microsoft Activesync Help'. Which is a fat lot of good !
It's all back to where I started !

Very often, I have a connection/synchronization error:
I put the Wallaby to the cardle, I hear WindowsXP's USB connection sound (not sync sound), PDA start to connecting, but it hangs on "Status: connecting to host" screen. After 4-5 seconds, the window is closing, but nothing happen.
The only way, to start synching, to restart PDA.
This happening on my comuter at my work place. This was ROM version 4.00.16 and 4.01.16 too.
Usually, I can connect first time, but after I put the PDA out of the cardle, and back again Sync does not start.
Whrer is the problem? In my XP activesync, or pda?
Help, this take me very #@&"+!%#&@&
Hi Sallala,
I had similar problems too.
One time Active Sync runs smoothly.
Remove XDA from cradle and put back 30 sec. later and Active Sync doesn't work. My solution was to reboot the PC. It seemd safer than resetting the XDA.
I found a tool "ASReboot" on the Internet. Google around and you will find it too.
This tool reboots Active Sync on your PC, so no need to reset the XDA.
It helps for me. I hope it will help you too.
I can reboot ActiveSync by kill the processes wcescomm.exe and WCESMgr.exe with taskmanager, but it usually don't help. And I restart my computer sometimes, but it does not solve the problem to me. The only way is reboot the XDA..
I think there is another thing to solve our problem. If no others talking about this problem, probably this is not a common error, and maybe we do something wrong :S Or we are useing some applcation (eg. firewall) on XP maybe that conficts with activesync, but I don't know, what
However I will try this app that you suggest.
Thank you,
Gabor
Hello Sallala,
On my Desktop PC I have no trouble at all.
On my Laptop I have a wobbly USB connector, so sometimes no ActiveSync connection is made whatsoever.
ASReboot cannot fix this either.
Just unplugging and plugging in again resolves the problem.
No reboot from Laptop or XDA neccesary.
Perhaps you have a wobbly USB connector too ?
Don't worry guys, this is a common problem. It is a Microsoft product don't forget!
From my experience, it seems that killing "wcescomm" in the task manager then running it again (via the Activesync folder installed on your PC) does work, however not straight away. I found that it would re-connect after about 30-40 seconds.
Also, try closing Activesync on your XDA too, before running it on your PC. This might help too.
Finally, make sure that the version of Activesync you have is the latest (3.7.1)
Hope any of this has been a help
i am getting severely frustrated... i have tried active sync 4.0, 4.2, and 4.5. my phone will almost NEVER sync with my computer. earlier today i got it to sync (using 4.2) and started to do the HTC_Hermes_SIM_CID_Unlock_v3a. it reset my phone and i saw the first tri-colored screen with 'SPL by someone' where the SPL version was previously. then it just sat there and the DOS program didnt specify what to do, so i restarted the phone.
anyway the update didnt complete and i am still stuck with spl 1.06 and now (like the past previous months) my phone wont activesync. it will charge through USB to the computer so i know its getting connection, but i am back to the same old problem where the device will not recognize. i havent tried someone elses computer yet but i have checked the 'use advanced connection technique (tried it on and off) in the USB settings and nothing. i actually cant believe it synched today...
any ideas on how to get my phone to synch?????????
I had problems with this last night. I had updated to SPL 2.10 and tried a few rom upgrades.
One instance when I couldn't get it to sync I happened to look at my phone and I had to do a quick install to windows for some file, that turned out to be usb drivers and then there were no problems.
I tried another ROM upgrade and it wouldn't sync again. I read a post somewhere here about Zone Alarm (what I use). I did what the post said and now I have no problems. It actually syncs everytime now, as before it was 2 out of 3 with the original WM5.
I am work right now, I will post a link when I get home to what I found.
But I'm pretty sure its a USB problem. You could try a different USB port. Make sure it's a port directly on your motherboard. I read that if it's not there could be problems as well.
solution with avast antivirus
i have the same problem, i just deactivate antivirus for outlook, and its work perfect. i think that the problem was that avast search for virus coping mails to my phone.
My SPV C550 (HTC Hurricane, Windows Mobile 2003 SE) has never had any trouble synchronising data with Activesync on my XP desktop PC.
Now that I have a Vista (business) laptop, I am forced to use WMDC (Windows Mobile Device Center). I plugged in my phone via USB, and after briefly showing up as an "Unidentified Device", Vista found the driver automatically and installed it as a "Smartphone USB Sync" (version 6.1.6965.0). Leaving it plugged in, I then installed WMDC version 6.1. The main GUI came up, and my device connected successfully. I'm able to browse the contents of the device and the storage card, and also add and remove programs.
The problem is that whenever I try to sync my Outlook 2007 data, the response from Vista sync center is merely "Sync Failed". The error proerties window is blank, other than the date and time the error occured. When I disable all options (contacts, calendar, tasks, email) bar one, the error properties window states "Contacts: Attention Required", where "Contacts" is whatever I left enabled. None of these errors appear in the system/application event logs. Disabling all options produces a "successfull" sync, but as you can imagine this is not of much value to me.
I am not using any kind of firewall software (including OneCare), and all the required services are running (including "Windows Mobile-based device connectivity" and "Windows Mobile-2003-based device connectivity").
Another device (i-mate JASJAR, Windows Mobile 2005) was able to sync successfully first time with no problems at all.
I have so far tried:
- Restarting the laptop
- Soft resetting the phone
- Plugging the phone into different USB ports
- Deleting and re-establishing the partnership
- Reinstalling WMDC
- Reinstalling Office 2007
- Updating the driver for the "Smartphone USB Sync" to various others (both from HTC and Microsoft).
- Hard resetting the phone
All have produced the same result: "Sync Failed". Now I'm out of ideas, and I'd really appreciate some suggestions on this.
vista syncing problems
hello,
I tried syncing using druvaa inSync and it worked.
http://druvaa.com/products/insync_evaluate.html
Vyaas
i have had a lot of grief with this too as has 1000's of other people. Ive trawled through threads on various forums and there seems to be no guaranteed solutions.
I have a HTC HD touch and i am never confident of being able to place a tick in the boxes for syncing outlook items.
For a while, going into control panel and 'repairing' wmdc worked, with the device unplugged. but that stopped working too. A complete uninstall and reinstall of WMDC seems to be the only way to ensure a reasonable chance of everything being tickety boo. However, even that sometimes doesnt work and that requires a good half hour of my time.
I would be interested in knowing the actual process that the syncing does, as it must be intererupted by something in order for it not to work consistently. Microsoft itself hasnt an answer and just advises reinstalling. I know it looks at the outlook pst file but how it processes it, i am unsure.
In order to not lose all my contact details on the phone i now have them all saved to my sim, but losing the emails, tasks and calendar on my phone, is a real pain.
Perhaps one day someone with the tech knowhow will make a project of this and we can all benefit from having 100% confidence in things happening when we plug in that usb cable.
I have the same problem too
I haven't found an answer. Has anyone resolved this?
HTC says that they are aware of it and are taking it very seriously (never a good sign) and that they plan on having a fix for it someday (also never a good sign), but the don't have any idea when (a really really bad sign), and were unable to even give a time range for it being fixed.
I really like my TP2, but at the rate I'm going with it I'm ready to give it flying lessons.
Hey all,
I've been facing this peculiar problem for the past few days now. I'm running Microsoft ActivSync 4.5 on my system and have been using Gullum's prophet X ROM for a while. I have in the past installed and used several other ROMs with no problem at all (thanks to all the members' support here).
Today when I tried to install a new ROM and connected my Prophet to the USB, it made a peculiar sound instead of the normal ting-tong sound which signals a connection with the computer. Today it made 3 short sounds instead of the regular ting tong. It made tong-tong-tong and did not connect to activsync.
I am able to see the red led light on when the usb is connected and my prophet battery gets charged but Activsync states Not Connected.
I've tried soft resetting which did not solve the problem, I tried rebooting my system but didnt help as well. But when I tried to connect another Prophet(my friend's) it connects fine with a regular ting-tong and ActivSync says connected and syncronizes.
Please help...
Thank you.
After a lot of fiddling around with my phone, I finally managed to find the culprit. In case someone else faces the same problem, try this. This is where the problem was:
Start - Settings - System tab - "USB to PC"
Uncheck the check box that says - "Enable advanced network functionality" and voila, I was able to connect and update my ROM with ease.
Thank you,
CC
thankyou for this, ive just searched the forum and this 1 came up and it worked for me.
Okay all. Usually I don't post and just lurk around here to find the answers to my issue. This time after reading 300 posts about Activesync and the TP my problem is still not resolved.
Up until last Friday I have been able to sync the TP with my computer running WinXP via the USB connection. I sync with my exchange server OTA but use the USB connection for file transfers. My computer won't recognize that the TP is even plugged into the USB now. It still charges, but doesn't do anything else. I've rebooted the machine and TP, reinstalled Activesync on computer, unchecked the "enable advanced network functionality" box, changed USB cords, verified that I have the correct three repllog.exe values in my notification queue, and even hard reset the TP. Still no luck. I would think that it's something to do with the computer except that I plugged my Mogul in to check and it synced instantly.
Does anyone have any more ideas why the TP would not be registering as connected? You all are amazing when it comes to stuff like this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
uninstall the Windows Mobile-based Device from the
network adapters section of Device manager on the PC.
control panel -> system -> hardware tab -> device manager button
restart pc and plug in the phone via usb and select active sync.
also the reason this may work in your case is i have had to do this for a friend.
windows installed the general rdnis driver however each device has a different
instance installed and thus the one device can have a corrupted driver yet the
other works perfect.
i see that u used another usb cable, cuz once it happened to me that the cable would charge but vista wouldn't recognize my TP "unrecognized USB device" , until i changed my usb cable!
Well I finally just went to a friend at the Sprint store and he swapped me for another TP. The new one works perfectly with the same setup that the other wouldn't. I can only guess that somehow the USB connection on my phone failed somehow. Just wanted to post this in case anyone else may have this issue in the future. Thanks for the responses.
This problem has happened on a friends, as well as just happening to mine (about 20 minutes ago). The usual fix which seems to clear it up:
1 - Hook up phone to computer
2 - On phone, start ICS (Internet Sharing in Start -> Programs)
3 - Select PC Connection "USB" and Network Connection of any type (if Sprint stock ROM, I recommend using "Sprint")
4 - Hit the "Connect" soft-key (bottom left)
If you've never used Internet Sharing on the phone, your computer should install some drivers... Once that is completed, click the Disconnect left soft-key on the phone. Now disconnect the cable from the computer.
Close out ICS or soft-reset the phone.
Once the phone is back up, plug it in - it should work.
I don't know what is getting reset in the phone, but unless I connect with ICS, then ActiveSync will not connect whether I soft-reset or not.
The same thing happened with my phone.... I took it to the Sprint store and they even tried a hard reset. It worked once after that then again it wouldn't sync. So they just replaced mine.... It was like you said.... some malfunction in the phone itself.
Hope HTC can figure out why this is happening.
Touch pro not sync
I can sync with my Vista Laptop and my friends xp machine but not to my xp desktop. I have tried many different cables. Each time I try something new, I toggle the "enable faster data synchronation box on USB to PC on try to sync then off then try to sync.
I have tried to delete all the usb drivers and rebooted to let the computer put in a new set.
I have tried to delete all the non running programs in my device manager using view hidden files.....
I have uninstalled active sync and then reinstalled it.
I have hard reset my phone a few times to no avail.
I went and bought a blue tooth adapter so I could sync using blue tooth and this computer does not do a good job of recognizing the adapter, but it did recognize it the first time but, could not pair the two. my blue tooth adapter is now coming up as a an unknown device
when i hook up the phone this is the message i get:
USB not Recognized,
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message....
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Kent
MCW junior member THANKS....
thanks so much, this worked for me I could not sync my tasks or calendar, once I did what you said here I did get and Error Code 67..then cannot connect saying remote party has ended this connection...whatever that means...but anyway it proceeded to start automatically resynching and walla..all of sudden my tasks and calendar were on my computer ....first time I was ever on this forum ....I shall continue reading and learning here...so appreciate your help...I love my HTC Touch Pro and have just figured out how to connect to my big screen tv with only an MP3 or the like cable...works beautifully...except picture on tv is not the clearest...I will work on perfecting that next if it is possible...
Then I want to figure out how to get the phone connected to my computer screen, just like I did to my TV...then your phone acts as a controller...it's so cool!!

Ok I just found a solution for this, at least under Vista.
Click Start > Settings > Connections (tab)
Choose USB to PC
Once I removed the check mark next to "Enable advanced Network functionality" and clicked OK, my PC immediately saw my TP.
Hope this helps someone.
so what does the faster syc option do?
Ok so I searched the internet and found the advice to turn off the faster sync option on the phone.
After trying everything else I figured what the heck..
So it worked.
(btw windows adds a dif driver rather then the window-mobile baised device driver... )
So what does this option do? What does it point to being the problem on the computer?
Thanks,

yeah i was having the same problem...my cpu would just recognize my phone as a mass storage device... Read your solution. And it worked... Damn i feel like a moron should have checked. Thanks!
I am having the same problem except the enable advanced network functionality option is checked and grayed out so it can't be unchecked.
I am running a 6.5 rom...
Any suggestions?
Solution solved
If you go to Settings->Connections->USB to PC and uncheck Enable faster data synchronization.
You will notice below that it will say "(Clear this check box if ActiveSync does not recognize the device)"
Once I did this it worked perfect.

Think of this step as telling your tp to quick boot/sync if nothing between the device and the reciving pc has changed (ie: hardware, software etc.
Enables faster syncing and quicker connection and authentication between pc and WM device. Reason for unchecking this to make it work?, by hard-reseting or changing specfic phone information you've reset specfic settings that are registerd with your pc.
i was having this problem with my sprint tp2 and tried it and worked. wish i would of learned if before reseting my computer and losing some windows i had open and the hard reset on my phone and losing all my contacts now i gotta go back to sprint store to get them again.
Works on the Touch2
I had this problem, which was driving me nuts especially as it was intermittent. I found Dashrender's advice and followed it except for turning off "Enable faster data synchronisation". Brilliant, works perfectly, thanks.
But what are HTC doing putting something in the software that fouls things up?
I knew i wasnt loosing my mind!
I have been workn on phones for a while. And have just been freakn about these same Issues Sony vio with 64bit vista. Thanks for all the tips. only took 6 hrs of pain to figure it out myself.
I have a similar problem now with my USB to PC . i have used this usb cable for many flashes but now when I plug it in, my computer doesnt recognize the usb device. also TV-Out pops up on my phone too. what is that all about? i dunno what to do
just found this thread searching for why my tp2 wouldn't sync. somehow under usb to pc i had it set to disk drive instead of active sync. checked it and works like a charm, can even see it in my computer now.
