I've been seeing a couple popping up in the AppBrain recommendations, but really, are these apps necessary? Or is it just another story like task managers i.e: not necessary, but if it makes you feel better, install it?
Im not Good at these stuffs, but i guess the chanse is pretty small to get virus on your Android. But i guess it could be Good to install an antivirus prgramme if something wud happen

now days...there is even anti virus software for Apple products...of course there is the need for Andriod ones too! all those marketing gimmicks full of bollocks and bull****...

Well it depends , sometimes you would need to download externel items from the web which may contain a virus also some/most antiviruses include phone tracer so depends what your looking for
I dont really think it is needed because it a linux based os and there are very few number of known viruses out in the world which really affect the phone .. but for your own satisfaction you are free to choose whether to install an antivirus or not ...
It makes you feel better after I read about the Droid.Dream virus, but those don't come out often at all and if you download from the Market Google usually remote kills it.
And what about viruses from web browsing? Can I get them this way?

Just out of interest is there an actual need for such applications as android is linux and I never install apps without reading their reviews first. So is there a point to these apps or are they just wanting you to drain your battery faster?

I've not bothered with any, however recently started running Samsung Mobile Security, doesn't seem to affect battery and silently runs in the background. Available via Samsung Apps.
There is no point to antivirus apps on android, your best bet is to watch out what you install and always check the permissions something asks for, and if it seems to ask for stuff it shouldn't need, eg permissions to send sms's or call numbers on something like a wallpaper app don't install it.
Using popular/well rated apps from known devs/using your common sense is far better than these supposed anti virus apps.
Just what I thought to be honest with you guys. I just wanted to see other peoples opinion on it as I've been reading on some threads people have actually paid for avg pro etc and i just thought what's the point.

It's not worth it just for the antivirus part tbh. Market has inbuilt protection against known threats, which is all most AV software gives.
Maybe some people like the extras, like remote backup, wipe, tracker etc... But most of that is available free.
If you really must use AV, at least use lookout. Others just use the app name to decide if it's malicious (was tested by chainsdd who compiled hello world using a particular package name, then had it setting off avg...)

Use Lookout or ESET.
There has been an abundance of Malware apps posted on Market and more and more are slipping through and then been pulled later so its best to have something installed just incase.
Common sense is your best protection but its best to have a fall back.

Thanks for the great responses. I do have common sense but just don't like the fact that companies charge a considerable amount for it. But I have donated towards the titanium back up pro which is handy and worth it. Also thanks for the suggestions of anti virus apps

So I rooted with the method sticked in the development center for cdma and now my computer has a virus. Currently paying dell $200 for trying to fix it.

The stock Ruu exe 2.17 will throw a warning after it is downloaded tho only cause it was a exe file,...
Doesn't mean a virus or keylogger or anything... I never have gotten a virus off xda or any where else.....

Sorry m8, it won't be the root process / s-off process which has caused you to get a virus, chances are it could have been there all along, there has been a truckload of people who have done this procedure and none of them have reported a virus.
Maybe a false positive but nothing more.
First things first, call dell and tell them not to come out, $200 for someone to come out and just press restore to an earlier point in time is a joke.
Either rollback yourself, or get malwarebytes, spyware doctor, registry mechanic, ccleaner, hijack this (then analyse results) a decent up to date full antivirus, make sure your windows is up to date, update all drivers, clean out junk and be careful what you do on the net in future, u should be good.
Remove all scanners but your AV when your done.

I'm 110% sure that there was something you were doing with your computer aside from rooting, or someone else in your household who has access to your PC.
200 dollars to fix your computer lol. Worst case scenario backup your files and factory reset the computer.

I actually don't want to be that bold (sometimes it is necessary) but he really is telling the truth. I know how it is to start out and giving props for giving it a go. I know we all have to start out somewhere and XDA is a proper place as all or most members are willing to help you out in anything. ( if you left your dog outside - you might find a member to put him/her in the dog house in the back yard) that is how most of the members are on here. Willing to take the time to help.
Now as your current situation, yes, you did have a problem before OR maybe not. Depending on your current OS and Virus/Malware program. As stated before any program to alter current builds in there database will register as "malware or virus" so maybe you really don't have anything wrong so to speak.
Usually, if it has been in the forums for months we all would have been exposed of any malware etc and would have reported back w/ bad emotions... so no worry about XDA
Not sure what you are running for an OS, or program to protect or I could be more helpful but just letting you know, if you put out a question I'm sure you will get an answer.

nope you dont need it at all ...there is no virus created so far no virus can infiltrate android stuff..im using my android phone for over and over again ...with no antvirus...

It's really difficult to get a virus in your phone and the only thing the anti virus will do is slow down your phone. There's no need to have an antivirus installed.
You need to understand there is no virus, ie a self replicating destructive app, per se but there is malware and antivirus apps can check for known malware so are a good idea if you are concerned and don't take time to check app permissions before installing.

The link you say shows viruses exist doesn't actually show that, apart from it being about an antivirus company claiming that hackers were going to create a virus (in other words it hasn't happened yet) it later reverts to classifying it as malware.
There is no virus on android, there is malware but most people confuse the two.

I am an expert in network exploitation and hacking and as long as you stay up to date there is no need for an anti virus. It just people wanting more money.

there might be people creating viruses for android but in my opinion its open source code and developers all over the world would recognize viruses
further viruses on your computer may not affect ure phone cus they were created for windows and not for android
in my opinion anti virus software on cell phones is only affecting battery life and cpu/ram using nothing else

As android is a Linux based O.S. it really does not need an anti virus and I will agree that with an antivirus your battery will drain much faster. I found this out when I first steppes into the android world. However if you feel safer with an antivirus I would also use lookout there are some really good features in it free as well as paid

A friend of mine who, ironically, works in IT security did get a virus on his nexus phone. So, yes, you can get a virus on Android but it's not a common event.
As to the battery impact, that is not correct as a general statement. I run Lookout and it has no noticeable impact on my battery life.
With Lookout I can remotely wipe my phone.

I have started to hate this kind of threads. Please use the search engine before posting. There have been more than 5-10 threads which has already discussed about antivirus. Most of it had the same conclusion.
I should repeat it and hope the mod closes this thread.
ANTIVIRUS IS NOT NEEDED FOR ANDROID. IF YOU INSTALL CRACKED APPS OR APPS FROM UNKNOWN SOURCES, ONLY THEN THERE IS A NEED FOR ANTIVIRUS.
ANTUVIRUSES ARE BATTERY DRAINERS, USE A LOT OF SPACE, DOES NOTHING AND MAKES MONEY OUT OF THE NOOBS.
If still it wasn't loud and clear, I would recommend the OP to follow xda rules and search before posting.

I using android since long time ago and just because of curiosity I tested all anti virus software's that exist. Never found any virus. It's useless to have that.

I have compiled 82 system apps that I have frozen via titanium backup pro, I have risked a lot with my 600$ device and guinea pigged myself as a test subject ,for the greater cause .Of course I do have plenty nandroid backups if anything were to have gone wrong .As of now there are no know issues, force closes, etc....force closes are common when u freeze the wrong app, just for future reference !Also some force closes render the phone helpless unless you do a battery pull..in which the HTC one dorsnt have a battery to pull.
So as far as my compiled list is concerned it Is safe for everyone to use.
Everything works as should. You can choose to safely freeze whichever of the 82 apps/apks you prefer to. Feel free to add any apps you have also tested to be safe to freeze .
This greatly helps reduce lag , free up ram and and may even provide better battery life ,due to android os that sometimes has many system apps... that we don't know what they do exactly but many greatly affect our battery life because they unnecessarily run in the background and drain batter and the majority of them we never use .
This is the list freeze as many or as little as you desire to.
Every one check marked indicates it's safe to freeze .
NOTE: DO NOT DELETE/REMOVE ANY OF THESE APPS IN TITANIUM BACKUP UNLESS YOU POSITIVELY HAVE A NANDROID BACKUP IN cwm or twrp RECOVERY.I AM ONLY PROVIDING INFO ON "FREEZING APPS" "NOT DELETING".

If you want to unappreciated that's fine too.

i could have 2 tb of ram and id still disable stuff like everything tmobile put on there. that security thing and all the tmobile notifications are annoying as ****. also why do i need all the social networking apps running with access to my phone when i dont use them
