Android anti virus? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just out of interest is there an actual need for such applications as android is linux and I never install apps without reading their reviews first. So is there a point to these apps or are they just wanting you to drain your battery faster?

I've not bothered with any, however recently started running Samsung Mobile Security, doesn't seem to affect battery and silently runs in the background. Available via Samsung Apps.

There is no point to antivirus apps on android, your best bet is to watch out what you install and always check the permissions something asks for, and if it seems to ask for stuff it shouldn't need, eg permissions to send sms's or call numbers on something like a wallpaper app don't install it.
Using popular/well rated apps from known devs/using your common sense is far better than these supposed anti virus apps.

Just what I thought to be honest with you guys. I just wanted to see other peoples opinion on it as I've been reading on some threads people have actually paid for avg pro etc and i just thought what's the point.

I have Kaspersky Internet Security software on my device.
You can get it free if you bank with Barclays UK. ( i don't bank with Barclays. . . lol )
Thank You

It's not worth it just for the antivirus part tbh. Market has inbuilt protection against known threats, which is all most AV software gives.
Maybe some people like the extras, like remote backup, wipe, tracker etc... But most of that is available free.
If you really must use AV, at least use lookout. Others just use the app name to decide if it's malicious (was tested by chainsdd who compiled hello world using a particular package name, then had it setting off avg...)

Do you have the link to chainsdd who compiled this list please
Thank you

Use Lookout or ESET.
There has been an abundance of Malware apps posted on Market and more and more are slipping through and then been pulled later so its best to have something installed just incase.
Common sense is your best protection but its best to have a fall back.

pulser_g2 didn't say ChainsDD compiled a list (re-read it), but he is referring to this
http://androidsu.com/2011/06/a-word-about-superuser-and-security/

Anti-virus software does only one thing *well*...And that is make money for the companies who push it.

oinkylicious thank you for the link and it is very useful to know that information
Thank you

Thanks for the great responses. I do have common sense but just don't like the fact that companies charge a considerable amount for it. But I have donated towards the titanium back up pro which is handy and worth it. Also thanks for the suggestions of anti virus apps

[Q] Mobile Antivirus. Really necessary?

I've been seeing a couple popping up in the AppBrain recommendations, but really, are these apps necessary? Or is it just another story like task managers i.e: not necessary, but if it makes you feel better, install it?
Im not Good at these stuffs, but i guess the chanse is pretty small to get virus on your Android. But i guess it could be Good to install an antivirus prgramme if something wud happen
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
Nope not necessary unless you're the type that likes to go on some shifty sites , or do other weird things

Yeah I reckon they're pointless. Was just wondering if people are actually buying into that...poor buggers. I would imagine all it does is slow down your phone and easy battery.

now days...there is even anti virus software for Apple products...of course there is the need for Andriod ones too! all those marketing gimmicks full of bollocks and bull****...
Depends
Well it depends , sometimes you would need to download externel items from the web which may contain a virus also some/most antiviruses include phone tracer so depends what your looking for
I dont really think it is needed because it a linux based os and there are very few number of known viruses out in the world which really affect the phone .. but for your own satisfaction you are free to choose whether to install an antivirus or not ...
It makes you feel better after I read about the Droid.Dream virus, but those don't come out often at all and if you download from the Market Google usually remote kills it.
And what about viruses from web browsing? Can I get them this way?
Dude read my post once again !!

What apps should always be running?

Are there any apps that I should keep running and not have my task killer kill? I'm rooted BTW.
Also I have seen improvement using a task killer so please keep this on topic to my question, no preaching about how task killers are not worth it. Thanks.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Seriously, you shouldn't be using a task killer at all except if there's a misbehaving app that won't stop on its own. This is linux, not Windows.
Let the phone manage its own memory. Many times using a task killer just makes things worse. There's plenty of reading material on why if you google for it, so I won't bother with long details.
Start here on xda though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6426198
If you really think memory management is an issue, there are two apps I consider safe to use. AutoStarts which can prevent certain apps from starting up on their own, and AutoKiller, which isn't really a task killer, despite the name, but a way to tweak Android's own internal memory management parameters.
In linux, free memory is wasted memory, you want those apps "running" in the background so that when you want to switch to them, they're pre-loaded. Most of them aren't doing anything anyways, they're just sitting there idle until you open them...
Hmm despite my statement about keeping this on topic, I haven't seen that article till now. That article makes more sense than people just preaching. I'm going to try it. Thanks

HTCMode = SMiShing app

Hey all,
There's been quite a few reports of people getting duplicate SMSes in the ViperDNA ROM thread. I think I have, unfortunately, found the cause. The other day, I got a SMS from someone not on my contact list/nor anyone I recognized at all. It was like spam email, but from SMS with a link to some site to boot. I brushed it off and just deleted the message. I was reading Android Police's new article on Android anti-virus apps. I was surprised to see my $15 Kaspersky app doing so poorly, so I uninstalled it and installed the #1 rated TrustGo. I did a scan and it found a "High Risk" threat in HTCMode. I followed the link provided by the app and, sure enough, Google has acknowledged the vulnerablility.
This vulnerability is being kept very close to Google's chest, so you don't find much about it doing a search for it. It certainly isn't getting a whole lot of press, but it's gotten some.
I tried to delete the app via TrustGo, but it failed. So went into Titanium Backup and froze the app and then was able to uninstall it. I've rebooted a couple times since uninstall and there doesn't seem to be any repercussions from getting rid of it. I highly recommend you do the same.
Just a heads-up. Protect your shiny DNA and your personal info/data,

Perhaps HTC has nothing to do with this software and (as if they care) the developers are trademark infringing when they use it in the app. They merely use the HTC name to legitimize their software and make you think it should be on your phone (some Sense software.) I'm sure on the S3 it's called SamsungMode or TouchMode and tries to make it look like it's part of TouchWiz.
If HTC did create this software, then the SMiShers have just found a way to exploit a vulnerability in the software as they did with other brands. As the video and write-up details, this is not HTC-specific; but Android-wide.

Neither was I until yesterday and I was quite pissed a free app outperformed one I paid $15 for. When it found the vulnerability my anger turned to humility and concern.
All it does is allows apps to send u fake spam texts. I get that type of junk anyways without this apps help.
On the DNA I think its the HTCModeClient.apk. I'm gonna remove it on my Rom today and see if my text work normal.

So reading this seems really shady that they would do this. So I'm not rooted on this phone and I don't want to root because I enjoy this phone how it is. So obviously I can't freeze this so if I disable it, won't this be the same thing as freezing it?

Kinda sorta... cant hurt to do that

82 system files/bloat safely frozen with titanium Pick n choose !

I have compiled 82 system apps that I have frozen via titanium backup pro, I have risked a lot with my 600$ device and guinea pigged myself as a test subject ,for the greater cause .Of course I do have plenty nandroid backups if anything were to have gone wrong .As of now there are no know issues, force closes, etc....force closes are common when u freeze the wrong app, just for future reference !Also some force closes render the phone helpless unless you do a battery pull..in which the HTC one dorsnt have a battery to pull.
So as far as my compiled list is concerned it Is safe for everyone to use.
Everything works as should. You can choose to safely freeze whichever of the 82 apps/apks you prefer to. Feel free to add any apps you have also tested to be safe to freeze .
This greatly helps reduce lag , free up ram and and may even provide better battery life ,due to android os that sometimes has many system apps... that we don't know what they do exactly but many greatly affect our battery life because they unnecessarily run in the background and drain batter and the majority of them we never use .
This is the list freeze as many or as little as you desire to.
Every one check marked indicates it's safe to freeze .
NOTE: DO NOT DELETE/REMOVE ANY OF THESE APPS IN TITANIUM BACKUP UNLESS YOU POSITIVELY HAVE A NANDROID BACKUP IN cwm or twrp RECOVERY.I AM ONLY PROVIDING INFO ON "FREEZING APPS" "NOT DELETING".
I WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OR FEEL OBLIGATED TOO...FOR THE LACK OF FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS POSTED .
Please leave feedback with your observations towards any improvements or issues if any that you may experience.
Mod plz delete
Well, this list is very subjective. Alot of what you froze alot of people actually use. Like street view...document viewer...the remote app...among others. From looking at what you diabled it seems all you want to do is make calls and text lol.
THIS IS ABOUT WHAT CAN BE FROZEN WITHOUT ANY SYSTEM ISSUES OR FORCE CLOSES .
If you want to unappreciated that's fine too.
Obviously I have takin the freezing to an extreme,it's called freezing as many apps as possible that DONT AFFECT SYSTEM FUNCTION IN A NEGATIVE MANOR.There are many I'm sure who don't use these apps and would find It fine to do so ....and only care about speeding up there device ...I have done no wrong ..infact if anything I've answered possible questions in the future on if them apps can be frozen ....maybe there are people who would want the most possible options .So it is up to whomever to pick and choose what they want to freeze from the list. All I have done was made It clear that if they want to take it to the extreme ,all these system apps and apks are safe to freeze with no issues .

You think you quoted the wrong post
Exactly what I was looking for, one of the first things I do when I got my phone. I can confirm this is a good list

First Barclays app, now Halifax too

People who use banking apps and depend on them (me) will know, that the idiots at Barclays blocked their apps from working on our rooted devices. For a while, there were workarounds but with the latest updates, there is no workaround. You can't use Barclaycard banking apps if you're rooted, [email protected]#!}£§!!¥}&}|$! [emoji35]
That's 70% of my work and usage of this smartphone down the drain!
And now, we can add Halifax to that list! Their updated app also won't run if you're rooted, bah.
We really need to find workarounds to these. This is simply untenable. It is my choice to root for more ease, comfort, personalisation and productivity, and our own responsibility. Denying us access will only make it worse!
Sent using Tapatalk
Surely its a security issue and the bank are being ... secure !
So they were unsecure for the past 5 years of my usage? [emoji43]
My choice tho, I'm running the app and its my account I'm using.
My card, I can use it how I want, and can give it to whoever. It's my responsibility. Not that they disallow me from using a card!
Sent using Tapatalk
Thread moved to Android (General) Q and A
Are there any known workarounds to this then?
Sent using Tapatalk
I knew there'd be no responses elsewhere, so no solution. That's why I had posted in the m8 section, as the solution is for seeking similar m8 users. Thread wasted.
