[DISCUSSION] To port or not to port?

Fascinate users, my team and I are trying to decide whether or not to port over to the Fascinate. We would definitely love to, but want to get a feel for how many Fascinate users would be interested in a Bionix rom. Porting takes time and we'd have to purchase a Fascinate for testing, so we want to know if it will be worth our time and money spent.
Please post within this thread if this is something you would be interested in. Currently we develop mainly for the Vibrant. However, we have begun porting to the Captivate, and soon will be porting to the Epic, i9000, and G2.
Moderators, I apologize if this is in the wrong section, however, we feel we can get more responses if left within the development section.
Thanks Everyone!

Do you have a link to information about your ROM?
I'm not familiar with your rom or team but I'm always all for an alternative to try. I would gladly give your rom a shot when completed for the fascinate.

PFroyjr, das harshly put man, (OUCH) hey A.D. , the best way (in a mannerable way of saying wat pfroyjr jus said man) , is to do the old fashioned trial and error! The BEST advice I can give (because I will be using it also) is to find "Android Development for Dummies" , you can either download the PDF (legally or illegally is your decision) or go to a library and find it (download is your best bet, though.) It gives very in depth info on android deving, and is a great help! Otherwise, you can download a kitchen (go to theunlockr.com and search android kitchen, or search the XDA forums for one that somebody created) and start cooking lol.! Hopefully, ur gonna git a magnificent dish. I doubt that we use the same phone but you hav my support 100% from one dev in training to another

Sorry it was an off day LOL. The for dummies book is good but the biggest issue I see people learning dev is Linux. Pick up a good book on Linux and setup your pc/mac with the appropriate software. Best of luck and if you have any specificquestions I know there are lots of great people here to help, but Google first

I disagree...unless your doing something with the kernel you don't need linux at all.
sent from my uncyanogen modded epic 4g. with the key skips.
You still need to understand how the system works. Side note since you mentioned kernels....most newer ROMs have certain kernels that work and some that don't. The dev process is about learning how it ALL works not just how to theme a ROM someone else made.
No offense but any moron can follow directions on how to modify someone's work and not know HOW it works. True talent is by understanding and creating something new and original even if based on someone else's idea.
Hence I say learn Linux at least enough to understand

I agree with the both of them. Windows and Linux are like riding a bike vs. Riding in a car, its like 2 completely different ways of getting to the same thing, just one is faster than the other! Now my only objection to pfroyjr's statement is that http://www.cygwin.com gives windows the main pieces of Linux! I have yet to use it, but from what I understand, its probably gonna save you a couple of Gigs in PC memory vs. Partitioning your hard drive to dual boot or installing a virtual machin via Virtual Box! Unless you are talking about learning how to build a rom all the way from planting a seed to watching the tree grow, you probably don't need to know every piece of linux! Also, with the help of various things like APK manager (which breaks down the compiled XML files for editing using a regular text editor, rather than some complicated software) the sky is the limit when it comes to theming!
So, to sum up my statement, and kinda piggyback on what the other 2 said, if you just want a slightly different LOOK, then Linux is not necessary. But if your trying to take the future of ROMs to a whole new level, you either need Cygwin or, as pfroyjr said, Learn Linux!

Introduction to development... please?

Hello, I wanted to start developing roms and mods for android, mainly for my Galaxy Nexus which I own now. I have some knowledge of java and I want to know a good starting point to gain some knowledge on developing. If someone could recommend a forum, post, website, video series, anything I would love to check it out. I can't wait to get into it but I just didn't know where to start.
Thanks

Wanted to let everyone know that I have been making videos for the community for a year now. I'm very excited to share these videos with you all!!
What to expect:
I have videos coming out every week and this will make it easier for those of you who can't seem to find a ROM that you like or perhaps want to know what ROM features are in them. You will be able to see those features and decide for yourself which ROM FITS YOU BEST!!! I will be showing quadrants from some ROMs as well as other SCORES like linpack, nenamark and other benchmarks. Just let me know what you would like to see. I do many different types of phones and ROMS so anything you want to see or know let me know.
I also have a NOOB TUTORIAL coming out that will explain how to ROOT and add ROMS to your phone STEP BY STEP EASY INSTRUCTIONS!

Tutorials are sorely lacking around here. I'm fairly technically savvy, much moreso than the average person. But even for me it's pretty daunting for somebody that's relatively new to rooting and flashing ROMs to actually follow through with it. Most of the step by step guides require a masters in Android before you can even understand them. Between kernels, radios, AOSP/AOKP, CWM/TWRP, nandroid, dalvik, Odin, GAPPS, format/wipe, different kinds of backups... it's pretty crazy. I know it sounds so simple to people who are familiar with it, but trust me, to many people it's not. Especially with a device that costs so much money and you have to make sure everything is compatible with one another. The developers in here do a great job of creating a ton of this stuff to use but it doesn't seem like the most welcoming place for beginners or "n00bs". Seems most questions or problems are treated by saying "you didn't read enough" or "you screwed up" which isn't very helpful. Part of the problem is that guides and tutorials become obsolete and out of date so quickly, yet people don't want to give new advice because something similar is covered in a 6+ month old tutorial.
So long story short... any new tutorials are welcome! I'm considering rooting and putting liquid JB on my Note but feel like it's safer to just wait for the stock upgrade at this point. I "upgraded" my old HTC Magic back in the Cupcake/Donut days to a CM build with new radios/kernels/SPLs or something, and could never un-do it and ended up making the phone useless.
Another excellent thread ....
With your permission I'll gladly add this into the super thread.
It is tireless work like this, that sets the note section apart as the Premier place to be.
I have every intention of using the note 1 for several years to come for the very reason I stated above.
The members and contributors are beyond compare ...
Many thanks ....g

[Q] Starter's guide to create a new custom ROM ?

Hi all -
I'd like to create a new custom ROM. Can anyone provide some reference materials ?
Thanks !
Maybe try the Q&A
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I'd PM one of the devs, for starters. Who knows better on how to create a custom ROM than somebody that's already doing it? Hit up mikeyXDA (MeanROM and MeanBean fame) or Viperboy (ViperROM fame), or one of the other countless devs for this device. I'm sure they can get you headed in the right direction.
Sent using my HTC EVO LTE and a magic wand
or you can read one of the million guides on xda.
dont pm one of the devs unless you have to.
try and learn for yourself.
i guarantee theres some information on xda for whatever youre currently looking to do.
the search feature and google are going to be your best friends.
So, there comes a time in each man's life when he wants to create something of his own. What it sounds like you want to do is add mods and themes to an existing ROM. This is called winzipping. If you do it right, people will try to buy you a phone. But be warned: it is unethical to lie about your sources, and under the GPL your source must be made available so we _will_ know. That said, the source is all available.
You can probably start at xda-university.com
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Take a stock base rom, and edit away. Learn how to use apktool and 7zip
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Learn how to compile from source too. I had a lot bugs when I tried "winzipping" as the cool kids call it now. I am going to retouch my g2x miui rom just for fun and finish it. And start something on my evo just don't know what yet.
