THIS LINE IS IMPORTANT! IF YOU ARE ON A VERIZON (Or any carrier besides TELUS in CANADA) THIS WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU AND WILL PROBABLY BRICK YOUR PHONE
This is in the Verizon forum because it is the best result on google.
Sorry the mad use of format tags.

Release 2 in as many days. This time, beta 3! Thanks vibrant developers, you make life swell
CHANGES
--Fixed the home button problem! Search = HOME, Home and back are still back. I'll work on REALLY fixing it later.
--Market sync is behaving once again, Swype installs (I have the legit beta, still trying to learn how to package it in, if anyone can tell me how, PLEASE DO! because the stock SGS Swype does NOT work)
That's about it for this release.
THINGS IM WORKING ON
--Actually fixing the home button problem and not dodging it.
--Getting the old SGS camera app working. I'll do that tomorrow probably (12/08/10)
--Packaging swype in with the rom. Because it pwns.
--Theme maybe? Haven't thought that far ahead but I want one.
--DEAR GOD LAUNCHER PRO.

CyanogenMod is a free, community built distribution of Android 2.2 (Froyo) which greatly extends the capabilities of your phone.
Code:
#include <std_disclaimer.h>
/*
* Your warranty is now void.
*
* I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
* thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please
* do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this ROM
* before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
* you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.
*/
I told you so.
To install this, you need to know how to use Odin. I will not be giving lessons. I will not be responsible if you take your lessons from a bad youtube video, or a nerdy neighbour who isn't quite right. Be careful.
IF YOU ARE COMING FROM ANOTHER ROM, OBVIOUSLY WIPE FIRST! If you are updating, you should be okay. I'll change this if something changes.
1. -- Install clockwork recovery for the VIBRANT
2. -- Place the zip files in the package on either the internal or external SD, I recommend having an external around for back up purposes if your internal mounts as a CD Drive like mine does.
3. -- FLASH KERNEL FIRST! Use the files in the package through ODIN, have not tested clockwork for flashing, I'd rather not. Maybe later.
4. -- Install Current FadedFroyo version included in package.
5. -- (OPTIONAL) INSTALL GAPPS! You want these, obviously. But only the first time.
Enjoy?
@OP, I added my servers as the mirror for the download, much faster than Megaupload, cheers

I'll try this out when i finish my exams first.
Thanks!
This is good news for sure. Can this be ported to work on vzw fascinate?

No. Don't even attempt to flash this.
Please.
Will be interesting to see how many phones go belly up from this...both Telus and the not too bright Verizon users who try it.
I understand this would turn my vzw fascinate useless, so I am staying away, but is the telus fascinate that drastically different that this rom can't be modified to work on vzw? Pardon, my lack of knowledge, but could some light be shed on this topic?

Not sure what else.
Ohhh didn't realize it used different network technology. Thanks

I don't have an eye roll big enough for why my reasonable reply to your continued public threadcrapping was removed. And let's be clear: because you've made contributions, we're all expected to put up with your behavior, which is tacitly sanctioned by the moderators.
Interesting reply to my post from a user who no longer exists:

That was an excellent post. The trouble with programmers is they forget their maturity so quickly. I don't know what it is, but I have seen enough grumbling hermits to be astounded at how good development does actually happen in teams, even in the open source arena. That and I hate sering negative stereotypes reinforced time and again.

I'm a developer and I agree with the general sentiment.
In short: it's not necessary to carry a chip on your shoulder and justify it because you've made contributions. It's just as import to act politely and humbly, even when the original post doesn't necessarily warrant that. The world has enough entitled programmers with a voice on the Internet. I used to operate in the same manner, and I hurt more relationships than I fostered.
The IRC attitude that bleeds into these forums is turning away serious developers. We could all do without the aura of "cool" and incessant fawning; the era of the "l33t" developer is over, folks. I'm certainly not going to rush away from my other projects to delve into Fascinate development.
I'd PM this to adrynalyne personally as well, but I'm blocked. Go figure.

I'd ask the same about his constant threadcrapping and negativity. Big fish, little pond.
It's OK, though, I think I get it - this is more of a club than a development community, and some individuals are above reproach. I'll act accordingly from here on out.
Carry on.

Wow...you need to grow up kiddo. What I said was true...and an honest observation.
1. If you don't have a way to go back...someone will screw it up and break their phone.
2. If you post it in a forum for another phone, there will be someone who skips all reading and goes to the download link and tries it.
3. Why do you think dj05 was never posted publicly? No way to go back if needed. Now things have changed and I have provided a way to go back, but its not up to me to give the go ahead to release it on the forums.
4. When someone breaks their phone, they don't come to you to fix it, they come to irc, and usually me. I've been overwhelmed by so many private messages in here and irc, that I've been forced to turn them off here, and not answer all of them on irc.
So get off your moral high horse and stop stalking me through threads like a rabid groupy.
Thanks

Short story, well. I haven't found a single thing that doesn't work yet.
I agree with jimmy to an extent about the leet behavior and aire about some developers but I honestly believe adrynalyne didn't mean to come off in that manner and I don't think it's entirely fair to make adrynalyne a.whipping boy for every developer that was a **** to jimmy. Regardless, throwing stones isn't going to help anything. It's fine to vent but this is kinda the wrong forum for that

Isn't that like saying "I'm not the racist type, but...."
Of course it's unnecessary. But there's nothing else to do at the moment on here. It's a little frustrating to see the work in the other variant forums, and to hear crickets and hopes in here.
I KNOW incredible people are hard at work right this minute to fix it, but....
It's looking like we will be last to see Voodoo, last to see Froyo, and last to see CM.
I'm not the whining type, but.....
I'm growing restless. lol.
If you're (the general you, not calling anyone out) interested in development, I suggest joining the IRC channel #samsung-fascinate on freenode. This is where you'll get the most up to date information. (For example, we were testing CWM recovery with Koush long before the first post showed up here).
If you'd like a small project to get you in the swing of things, and you're slightly familiar with linux and can get a VM up and running, you could always download the source from Samsung and learn how to compile your own kernel. I've seen a few people in the channel go from knowing pretty much nothing to getting their kernels compiled. Even if you can't get a linux VM up and running, maybe someone in the channel could help you with that.
Obviously thanks to Samsung, the kernel won't boot, but going through the process will help broaden your knowledge and give you some insight into Android and Linux in general. There's plenty to learn, and there's a wide range of people there with varying levels of expertise.
There are a number of us who have been at this since day 1, and since we "know" each other a little better, we often communicate directly between ourselves. If you pop in the IRC channel and don't see anything, don't take that to mean that no work is being done.
There are some major obstacles to be overcome here, and Samsung didn't do us any favors. We're working a number of things right now, getting the kernel source fixed, AOSP, voodoo, etc.. It will take time, but we're getting there.

if you notice i did not flame you... I could have, but i respect you as a xda member... I just said this was unnecessary, because it is. Like namebrandon said, join the irc channel, but starting a topic like that, then just saying some nonsense, really doesnt need to be done... Your a senior member, we need to be a good influence for the new people. Like i said, i've seen you help out and i respect that; but lets try to keep the Android Development to Android Development. If it's something like this atleast file it in general.

I would like to start learning how to put roms together. I would like to start with developing a 2.2 rom compiled from galaxy s I900 source. Is there anyone here that can point me in the direction of a good tutorial on how to start? In all seriousness do you stay apprised in any way shape or form of android related news our just enjoy smearing the forums with your illinformed ramblings and negativity? Speak of what you know and don't be so eager to dismiss anyone with the fortitude to increase their own knowledge base on an operating system such as this when its these people who we all depend on to better our experience with said operating system. As it is these people for whom google turns to when it comes to ideas on how to better their future stock releases. Thank you for the vote of confidence.

You do realize fallingup has written more android code than your phone can hold?
The reason they seem testy is they(actual developers) have been spending all their free time trying to get Samsungs crappy code to compile, and every couple of hours some one asks for an easy how to guide for porting Froyo.
Spend some time reading the forums. Find out what is already being done, then learn the basics of rom development. THEN, ask intelligent questions on how help develop Froyo for our phones.
Asking for an easy way to cook roms is the equivalent of the kid in the back seat asking "are we there yet" every 30 seconds. If you really want to learn how to cook roms, try a couple easy ones with the kitchen I linked to, then learn how to work on roms without the kitchen. Then work on Froyo. There is no easy way.
I didn't ask for an easy how to thinking that I could have it done by tomorrow or even that I could figure it out at all. I simply asked for a starting point and stated in the OP that I am a know nothing when it comes to developing. As far as my last post I meant no disrespect to fallingup in fact it was my mistake to quote his post. I actually intended on quoting jt1134 so, to fallingup, I have used your stuff many times and have nothing but respect for what you do. I apologize for the misquote. I in no way think myself to be super genius to the 10th power nor do I believe that I can actually do anything worth while with this code. I'm just bored and want to learn. I'm also an Android addict.
P.S. Thank you for the link. Also you'll notice in my last post now that you know of my misquote, that I am actually 100% behind people like fallingup. I would never knowingly give a verbal bashing like that to him.(god I feel like **** now)
You meant to quote ME? Wow.
In all seriousness, and no disrespect intended, I'll explain a few things.
The code Samsung provides is NOT the full OS. Not even close. It's the kernel, plus a few android packages. In most cases, the android packages are EXACT copies of the code that has been available from Google for months, and in other cases has one line changes referencing a Makefile that doesn't exist. This is no way gets us any closer to a 2.2 rom other than the kernel. What we REALLY need is a working 2.2 ota build or leaked package to move forward any faster. That is MUCH more important than the garbage that Samsung has been releasing to us.
If you are a noob to development, then GOOD LUCK. If you are an advanced developer with intimate knowledge of android, then GOOD LUCK. There are quite a few of us working on aosp ports to the SGS phone series, and so far it has not been completed for a SINGLE device.
There are no guides that will explain exactly what is needed to accomplish this goal. There is no one who is going to hold anyone else's hands through it. Hacking is a meritocracy, meaning you'll get help with advanced topics when you show you have done your research, put effort into resolving the issue on your own, and ask intelligent and informed questions that give exact details of the situation.
If you would like to continue to show a poor attitude, then go for it on your own. Wait for us to release a working rom. If you would like to actually learn and invest some time in moving forward, the GO FOR IT, you are VERY WELCOME to do so. Read the porting guides written by google, try some stuff out, and come over to IRC and get your hack on.
I'm tired. I'm generally a nice guy, sorry!

Now I have the right person quoted. Did you even read my post??? Let me repeat a key part so that you can understand and maybe you can stop battering the new guy.
"I didn't ask for an easy how to thinking that I could have it done by tomorrow or even that I could figure it out at all. I simply asked for a starting point and stated in the OP that I am a know nothing when it comes to developing."
I have admitted to my know nothingness. I simply want to learn. You could respond with something such as Galaxy S 2.2 is not a good place to start the learning process. Or you could have left it alone entirely and just thought that the link posted by "sgtmack" was sufficient enough. After all it did answer the exact question I asked. You might know a lot more about code and code writing than me but you have to admit, "your kind of an arrogant ass!" Now I would like to end this banter by allowing you to respond in whatever way you deem necessary. I myself will give this no further thought as I would like to move on now. That and I believe I have made myself look bad enough now.
As for fallingup and sgtmack, thanks for the hard work and helpful advice.
yutzyscott, do you not realize that jt and dirrk are the ones that got us the voodoo kernel? do you know they are the ones that got the kernel booting in the first place using samsung's ****ty source code? without jt, there would be nothing to build a rom around. wtf do you mean ill-informed when jt probably knows more than most people about developing for this phone? pay some ****ing respect for people that deserve it.
Yeah I do but, when this whole thing started I did not read who the post was by but, rather I just read the post. While I appreciate his work and am actually using it, my pride was hurt and its hard to interpret someones tone on a forum. I was under the impression in the beginning of all this that it would be known that I downloaded the 2.2 ota pushed to the original galaxy s and not the source they have been working with and making leaps and bounds with despite the road blocks. I was interested in learning how to port it (the ota I mean) rather than just sitting on my hands waiting to use anothers work. Chances are that I would never even come close to understanding what I was looking at but, I had to try. Now I'm sorry I asked. I quit...I was wrong, sorry! Leaving it to the experts. I'll go back to helping people with simple basic problems on droidforums.net and continue being an expert on using the real experts work.
This doesn't need to be turned into a flame thread. So here's my advice: join us on irc.freenode.net #samsung-fascinate and ask questions there. learn how to build a kernel, and maybe try to find out how exactly to port roms from other devices. Its a tough business, especially when we don't even get working kernel source from the manufacturer.
There are a ton of people that are working on the galaxy s phones, trying to get AOSP and the like on them. These phones are quite different than any other android phones, just with the way that the hardware / partitions are, so there is a lot to work through and document. Once one of the SGS phones is running aosp, im sure the others wont be too far behind. I wouldn't bother porting another crappy samsung rom, cause it will still have a lot of the crap that we are trying to get rid of by running aosp.
Thanks. And to jt, im sorry for being an argumentative ****. Thanks for all your hard work and despite the fact that there are many having issues with voodoo I am one of the many who it is working beautifully for.

I'm sorry, but this is the unfortunate state I find myself in.
When I first found this site, what I was expecting to find was a ICS for my phone. I could not have guessed what I would learn here. I had no idea I had a counter in my phone to worry about when installing open sourced roms? Next after much more reading I am to learn the source code Google releases is not complete, and uses binary drivers? Now I am to learn about CIQ, and my phone is spying on me? Wow!
Before I say anything else I want to express my thanks to this community. This has been such a resource I had no idea that it would be when I started. Thank you!
Now on to my question that after learning about all of that I don't seem to have a clear answer to. What I wanted when I first considered getting an Android phone, was to build from source, and run my own rom. I still want this, even more so since I learned about CIQ.
1. Due to the counter on my phone
2. I am to understand multiple images that make the phone work (boot, firmware, system)
3. The binary drivers.
Is this at all a reasonable goal?
Are there more flash images that I haven't read about yet?
Would having a direct from Google rom even be desirable?
I own a stock SGH-I777, I have done nothing to it yet.
Lastly about this site:
Is there anything you think I should read about on the forums?
Any language I should know, as in what does hellraiser imply/mean?
Any Android experience you think might benefit a could be developer?
Counter can be reset and avoided all together.
Sorry I don't know much about AOSP building, but your better off starting with compiling CM and learn from there unless you are really experienced in coding.
Speaking of, the image used to not increment the counter does, or does not still contain CIQ? I suspect it does? I would like a phone at some point w/o CIQ, and fully open source. Ty for reminding me.

I'm shocked AT&T choose not to bug their customers? I assumed since I saw mention of it being on Samsung, that it was on all their phones?

No it was just some phones, I think the skyrocket had it at some point.

Ok, so I rooted my first cell phone. It would seem heimdall latest has a bug that will brick your phone. (I'm on Mac OS Lion) I used the 1.3.1 instead, and it worked fine.
I saw many more sites, and this was quite easy. The way they showed it was very complex. Since I'm new at this should I wait to try out a ICS rom till after Samsung releases their source code, and the devs have had a chance to get it stable? How complete is the open source version of ICS? There was a note on the fsf.org page that linked me over here that some of the parts were still binary. Is it still true?
I think long term I want to get away from the official releases.
Well, you came this far, might as well flash an ICS rom now. If the leaks are any indication of status, the Samsung release will be pretty stable but the included kernel is problematic because it can cause hardbricking. Besides, you want to get away from stock, and all of the big roms released thus far are pretty darn stable; I don't know anything about binary parts or any of the coding, but plenty of people have no problem running CM or AOKP. Even the Samsung-based roms all look AOSP-like nowadays because they use Apex or Nova (not many devs like Touchwiz anymore). So take your pick, they're all good roms and most look like AOSP to some extent, with a few (mainly CM and AOKP) striving for pure AOSP.
Make sure to read and follow this guide carefully for flashing stuff, and have fun!
Ok here is where I have a problem. I have no idea about half of what you said? I know AOSP means "Android open source project" by inference of another reply. I even think CWM means "clockwork mod." (don't even know what this is yet) Saw a youtube video that mentioned it.
What is hard bricking, and what should I read to prevent it? I came here for a ICS rom, and it sounds like the two trying to be most open source are my preference.

Prother, by no mean to offense you, but seriously, if you don't know those fundamental technical terms, I strongly suggest you to hold off what you about to do and spend more time reading.
Let me go off and do a search the post for you, where you can get used to those terms.
Hang tight, prother.

So I will. To be honest I don't see the connection between the new jargon, and development I learn in school. There is definately much to learn here. I was expecting this to be like Zaurus development from back when I was active, it's very clear to me that this is a very different beast.
Here is one, I'm sure there is other thread.

Thank you friend. I may not have my own rom at the end of summer, but I should be on my way to understanding what would be needed for one.
Well the terms I wanted are not present on that list, most of that I was familiar with. To be honest, some of it I have not seen before as well. What is hellraiser, and some of the other xda developed jargon? I do have a tab open to that part of the forums, I just hadn't made it over there yet. I started on the forums for my device, then Android OS, and lastly general. Is there any other place I should pay special attention to that would help me?

Ok? I'm not sure I understand, is there something you don't like about the aokp rom that doesn't work very well?
I want off of the carrier provided images based on personal conviction. Google's development practices smack of cathedral, as do all of the 3rd party companies. In a sense they are abusing the spirit of free software by using a signed kernel to impede (if not actually prevent) our right to modify hardware we own. Any normal user of the software provided by the community (bazaar) can only help the cause.
I plan to share what I personally learn with close friends who live in my area. The more people we liberate, the better for everyone else. I simply applaud the work done here.
You can safely ignore Phalanx's post, he's just mocking you and other new users for not reading carefully and being stupid. You're at least trying to read and understand stuff, so I don't see any reason you should be put down the way he's doing so.
Here are a couple other links I think you'll find useful (please click my thanks button if you agree!):
ROM vs Kernel
Odex vs Deodex
Make sure to read all of the links posted in the sticky at the top of this forum, too. But note that by no means is this everything you need to read.
Mind you, all this reading is meant mostly for end-users, so that we learn how to safely and smartly modify our phones. Actual original developing beyond using what's already provided by the devs is a whole different story, and I'm sure there's even more to read up on that.
Good luck, happy flashing, and if you plan to develop later down the line, good luck with that too!

Ty for all your help. I'm glad you're all so thorough, it was like peeling an onion. The more I was looking at rooting my phone, the more there was to learn. All of you have done an amazing job making this approachable to a brand new user.
Ah I don't assume anymore about what people are trying to say, not everyone is a native english speaker. So I try to be understanding.
Yup I'll be at this for a while, I'm happy to have made some introductions, and maybe some time down the road I can even hope to contribute in some small way.
From a relative noob:
Follow the directions in the " [GUIDE] How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash Counter!! " thread. Then pick a rom you want to try and follow the CWM directions ... after that , find a ROM you like. If you don't want to void your warranty, wait for your carrier to provide the closest thing to what you want ... but, I'm happy with my flashed ICS ROM.

Last update for CM10 is 29.12 ?
And it went straight from a nightly to "stable" build.
It is quite silly to abandon one project if yet to be completed abruptly for another.
So like 10.1 will only get three quarters completion and dumped when 4.2.2 aosp code is released?
This is quite frankly utter madness.
A very good enough reason perhaps why ios versions are better polished.
Sadly disappointing.

nothing was abandoned. no stable release exists for this tab suite (until all bugs are squashed) as of yet. i purposefully switched to cm-10.1 for nightly on this tab suite (after various feedback/observations from people).
either move, or wait till the remaining bugs are squashed (first in cm-10.1, which i will then also try my best to apply to cm10) for a possible stable release.
if you want faster progress, start working on it. any help which re-mediates bugs which are device specific are welcomed. this is not closed source. all of this is out in the open. if you want it, make it happen.
your tab was abandoned at official ICS. anything greater is a plus and a gift as far as i'm concerned and is willed by my passion to keep working on it (when everyone else has bailed).

Please go to ios if you expect things to be done for you. This is not constructive at all considering that you are bringing nothing to the table. As pershoot said, it is his passion is why we see anything past the gimped TW ICS that was official release by Samsung. Not only is Samsung done with our Tab, so is Google. pershoot worked his butt off to bring compatibility to the code that dropped support for us.

I respect your skills and passions..but
The methodology used here is illogical at best and quite confusing at worst.
BY introducing 10.1 in the same chain of nightly sequences this too is causing a havoc as well.
Users are assuming by being led to assume..this is the continued CM10 build chain of updates.

think of it this way,
i enabled this tab to allow for the latest updates, one in which it would never see otherwise. this allows me to work on the latest and the not so latest, as it pertains to the device, in the public eye to allow for collaboration and feedback.

Did you seriously just say this?
Read the post linked in my signature please.
One should never feel they become 'dependent' on whether or not a developer who is not being paid for his time and does this work for fun 'finishes' development on a ROM based on your personal standard. If you feel that way you should probably not be modding your devices in the first place. XDA does not exist so you can imply its users have an ethical responsibility to give you what you need to make your device cooler than someone else's... It exists to inspire you to learn how to do this stuff and give back. It is a hobby, not a responsibility, and you acknowledge that fact when you flash the work.
Honestly, if you want to see something done and don't feel like waiting for the developer to address your particular concern, you have two options:
1) be prepared to donate funds in the hundreds of dollars per hour to pay the dev's bills and maybe the dev will focus on your needs
2) do it yourself...no one's stopping you

you went from asking to a diatribe about philosophies and how I need to live up to one's expectations. put yourself in my shoes, then re-read what you wrote and the tact that was followed.
while i'm a very patient and passionate person, i only have one brain, two hands and only so much free time.
as stated prior, roll up your sleeves and start working on it. that is how you can make a difference and understand what a person like me goes through supporting X amount of users across X amount of devices.
Firstly, this question is in no way intended to insult JamieD81 and I apologize in advance for any insult unintentionally implied.
I am running Jamie's builds of ParanoidKangDroid and am impressed with it's stability, as I was with all of the previous ROMs that he has shared with us.
Due to my love of PA's Hybrid Tablet mode (Jellybeer's take on it leaves the clock too small and disproportionate for my tastes), and the desire to have the latest version of Android I was running the ROM that is banned here (from what I took to be due to the builder passing off other's work as their own).
A not too thorough glance through System Settings leads me to think that ParanoidKangDroid is the ROM that was being plagiarized.
Am I anywhere near correct? If not no big deal, I've got a ROM that is more stable than that one, and comes from a ROM builder of great reputation. If it is the properly credited & branded version of the plagiarized ROM, then it is great to see a PROPER version on here.
Its not plagiarized, its built from pk's sources which roms are on the d2 devices, reason the roms were taken off from my understanding is between manel and a mod, not anything to do with roms in this section.
Me and manel have both been heavily warned in the past *note my attitude change on xda for the last while? There is a reason for that, I took the mods serious
Hopefully that clears it up a bit for you.

Jamie, I am in no way implying the you have plagiarized anything, ever. I don't even know what the deal is with Manel. As the poster above me had correctly supposed, the plagiarizer is the Jellybam team. Which I am reluctant to give any credence to.
Your PROPER build of paranoidkangdroid is very similar to the improperly branded works of those that I mentioned in the previous paragraph which led me to believe that they misappropriated that work as their own.
Again, i regret any and all negative implications that you have taken from my first post and have the utmost respect for your works and your activity here.

All it takes is 1 accusation FROM THE DEV HAVING HIS WORK STOLEN.

Facts do not
Certainly did not mean to start a war and this is my last thought on this.
You are correct...facts are facts....but.....does anyone know ALL the facts?
Let's say, just for arguments sake, you have a set of 10 facts. All, of which, are true. When pondering on a solution you leave facts number 2, 4, 6 and 8 out of your equation. You are subject to reach an entirely different conclusion.
Had an old boss one time that would always tell me, "Son, just remember...there are always three sides to every story...yours, mine and the truth somewhere in the middle. Our job is to find that middle."
And as an arbiter for many years dealing with union negotiations, his advice served me well.
Go in peace, my Friend.....after all, it is just an electronic device!
