has anyone looked into the possibility or upgrading the LCD in these to a higher quality one? that would solve many of my issues with the device. I see they have been researching this on the gtablet forum but search didnt find any information on this site for the 101....
anyone know enough about this to recommend a plug n play replacement?
Never done it on a tablet, but on a laptop you typically want to aim for the same or lesser resolution unless the video supports higher (on this would have to be exact same resolution probably) and you want a backlight that has similar power characteristics. Then you need the frame to be the exact same physical size, frame and thickness included. Good luck, lemme know what yah find id like a nice IPS or S-IPS in mine.
Hi, a normal laptop 1024x600 resolution 10.1 panel will work, it used standard connections. I have tried that with a pixel qi. It works but no touch obviously. However the capacitive touch panel is stuck on the screen so you will need to purchase an extra touch panel to stick on top of the lcd screen you will buy. However i dont think there is any ips 10.1 inch screens. These are made customely for devices i believe.
At its most expensive it is a $350 device (101 - 16GB). Completely not worth it financially to upgrade the LCD. You would be better off spending that money to buy a Adam with the Pixel Qi screen if you were so inclined to have a higher quality capacitive screen. It would probably cost less too.

at 1.5lbs and $500 ill pass on the adam. you can purchase better lcds for ~$100 thats still cheaper than the adam also... but finding that the touch panel is glued to the lcd kinda ruins this idea. oh well CES next week will have plenty of alternatives to the 101 im sure

I'm quite happy with my Folio now that it's running FolioMod, however, my biggest remaining concern is the screen. The viewing angle is pretty lousy, so I've started looking into possibilities of changing screen.
What do you hardware hackers say? Is there any good replacement screen out there that would fit and that also would work with existing drivers and so on?
interesting question!!
let see what hardware gurus says
But is it possible to buy a screen that it worth it (good and not to expensive) ? I had a quick look on the web, it seems that the only IPS screen that can be easily found is the iPad one.
I have been thinking about selling the Gtab for an Asus Transformer. The Gtab has been totally fine, with the exception of the really bad viewing angles on the screen. Being into photography this has kinda bugged me since the begining.
Do you guys think it is worth the $$$ to upgrade? I figure I could probably get around $200-$225 for the gtab with dock, but that would mean shelling out another $200 just to upgrade the screen.
Anyone with both want to comment if it was worth it?

I hate to say it but that is what I am doing. I have had my Gtab for about 2 months now and I like it but the viewing angle and not having any support from VS has turned me to the Transformer. The viewing angle of the IPS screen is 178 degrees so it has to be better than the 5 degree viewing angle of the gtab.
All I know is the Nook Color rocks at all angles
It depends...
If you want display pictures using your tablet then you have not choice but get tablet with best screen.
If you want to have total control over your tablet then your gtablet will serve you well.

Q: is the extra towing capacity of a diesel truck worth the expense?
A: This analogy has been used a million times but it still makes the point.
I have used devices with ups screens and decided it is not worth the cost. I also am not into photrogaphy.
For the extra 100 bucks (comparing new gTab to new TF), you get:
1. Better screen resolution: 1280x800
2. IPS screen
3. 1GB RAM
4. 5 MP rear-facing camera--but you'll look silly trying to take pictures using a 10.1" tablet.
5. GPS, E-Compass and Gyroscope.
6. A vendor who supports his product.
I would say: Go for it--even with the ~150 to 200 $ difference that you'll have to pay.
Thanks guys...I think if I can sell the gtab I am going to upgrade. The nice colors and viewing angle sound like it is worth it.
looks like I need a few more posts before the market place opens up for me.
Ignore - last post to get marketplace open.
Hi there!
I'm from the Sony Xperia S section, but I have a question.
My friend's i9300 fell out of his pocket when he was just getting in his car. Somehow, he drove over it, stopped the car on the driveway and went to see what he drove over.
The screen -- all, glass, the AMOLED screen and the digitizer -- is completely shattered, not working at all. The phone, however, seems perfect inside (also boots up and connects to the PC correctly).
Not rooted, no bootloader unlock (or whatever that's called on these sides of XDA ), nothing. He's a noob user, only made calls, SMS and occasional pictures.
So he (having lots of cash) said if I can fix it, but if not, I can keep it. We saw that a new digitizer/screen/glass combo costs around 140$, used about 130$ (take into account that this is central europe, not USA, Canada, UK or Germany -- the delivery fees from anywhere but Slovenia are 50€ for each package).
In the end, I get to keep the phone. It's a nice piece of hardware and I'd like to see how it'd do as a daily driver and to see how development is going around here (seeing as you people already have PA 3+ and other goodies). But damn, that's just too expensive for a screen (note that a Xperia S screen+digitizer+glass costs ~30$, and this one has more ppi at only 4.3").
My question to you is, how long do I have to wait for working pieces of hardware to emerge that will cost around 60$? Note that a new Galaxy S2 screen costs around 60$ and last year's first Sony flagship screen costs 30$.
I'm thinking one more year, maybe?
Thanks a lot for any help at all (PLEASE, make this a discussion thread, I want to read your opinions and speculation ),
--someone755
P.S.
Also, if my 'one year' theory turns out to be true, it'll be just in time for a replacement phone. Would you guys recommend the S3 in 2014 (or even in 2013)?
You must be thinking that I'm going mad with using a 2012 phone in 2014-15.
P.P.S.
If anyone knows where the SMS messages are stored and can tell me how to get them (IF that's even possible) off the phone without the need for a screen, that'd be great... It just seems like I at least own the SMS messages to the guy...
P.P.P.S.
The notification light is blinking in blue... Does that mean something is wrong or is it just a notification...? I figure the latter, since I heard the sounds of it booting to Android...
Also, there's this weird water-y sound effect when I press the home button. Could that be the famous lockscreen?
Sorry for being a pain, I'm just visiting to see if it's all worth it (might sell the parts if the components never get any cheaper)...
Notification blue, is just that.
Sms, you could possibly get an hdmi cable if you are sure about fixing it in the long run and you will be able to use the phone through your tv...until you wait for a screen.

Thanks for the reply.
Well I don't feel like buying a new cable adapter every time I have a phone to fix, plus there's no way to control the screen because the digitizer is also broken.
I don't really care all that much for fixing the phone, I'd just like to hear your opinions on how long until prices go down to see if fixing is even worth it...

You can plug a mouse in too
The price sounds about right. I struggle with an Xperia screen being $30 though. What? The Screen is always the most expensive component. Digitisers / Glass is always cheap £15, £20 for most phones but screens (LCD, AMOLED etc) are always expensive.
I don't see these components coming down. There will be a need for them for years as some people will run their Galaxy for 3+ years.
In 5 years, the prices could even go up due to rarity
But if the USB port is already connected to a screen, there isn't any more place for a mouse...
For the Xperia S screen, I found you a link: http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-sony-xperia-s-lt26i-lcd-screen-and-digitizer-assembly.html So I missed it by $10...
Well I also thought about the price increase, but I'm seeing the S2 as an example... It started out at about $100 but nowadays you get one for $60...
I guess the best thing is to wait, no?
Wait only if you don't mind no supply or a price increase .
Trade that off versus your thought that its overpriced at present .
jje
Well if prices for the screen increase, thee prices for the other components should also increase, right? In that case, if prices don't fall, I can sell what's left of the phone... Right...?
Since everything is working perfectly, I don't see why not...

Ah ok. It's an LCD screen though, not AMOLED. ...and much smaller. so it's not a fair comparison
Oh, I completely forgot about the Amoled screen...
Though isn't it more expensive to make a screen with more ppi, albeit smaller? Would be more logical (as it's harder and more complex). But then again, the way Amoled pixels are arranged is also the most complex thing ever...
Quoting GSMarena
For the S2; Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors | 480 x 800 pixels, 4.3 inches (~217 ppi pixel density)
And for the S3; Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors | 720 x 1280 pixels, 4.8 inches (~306 ppi pixel density)
I've also read a lot that the S2's screen wasn't as breakable as the S3's. Could that be one of the causes that the S2's screens started off way cheaper?

Well why not?
If the screens become rare, shouldn't that also mean that, say, vibrators would also become rare?
I've been thinking about connecting the thing to a screen and using it as a poor pc for media (movies, pics, etc.) or a small personal file server. In theory, that could work, since this still is a pretty powerful device...
Also, I've seen some Chinese sites selling fake screens and digitizers. I have yet to find a version that is compatible with the i9300... Again, would be grateful for any links
Screens are the most common things to need replacing due to accidental breakage

Hi Folks,
My S3's display stopped working after in contact with water. So I had gone for the display replacement.
I have asked the service center guy to install the Original Samsung display. He has installed a display and said its Original.
Could not find any flaw in the clarity and touch response, they are as good as original. But I noticed the display size is bit smaller than the stock S3 display (it was a bit less than the 4.8 inches).
And if you noticed the display while it is ON, we could see a small black border line on the four sides of the screen. That black border line is a bit thicker in this new display which makes the display a few pixels smaller than the stock. I tested the phone hardware info through two apps and the displayed results said that the Screen Density is 320 dpi. (S3 has 306 ppi, not sure if ppi and dpi are same)
I am so much confused whether this new one is original Samsung display or a replica. Is there any way to find the manufacturer of the display through an app?. My phone is rooted and running CM11 M12 ROM.
Please help me in finding the display genuineness.
Looks like a chinese replica €65 aprox. Authentic goes around €120
ETradeSupply sells both kinds of screens and puts “OEM” in the name of the better ones while the knock-offs are a bit cheaper and say something like “replacement”. The “OEM” cost me $142 and is just as tough as the original; a $115 knock-off I had bought at eBay didn't survive a knee-high fall.

Not that I know of. Most likely they sell directly to Samsung, and the screen I got is slightly uneven in brightness (only visible with a fully black screen), so it may be a rejected part.
For those of you who've replaced your screens either DIY or via LG warranty replacement...please post how your screen quality and viewing angles compare to the original LCD.
I'll start...
1. On my Current G2, I had a perfect screen. Perfect viewing angles and excellent image quality with no defects
2. Ebay Replacement screen #1 had dead pixels and Mira lines.
3. Ebay replacement screen # 2 had horrible color. Almost black and white
4. Amazon replacement screen has great color & image quality but lesser degree of viewing angles.
It's hard to explain but easy to compare to other G2s and phones when you compare side by side.
After all these screen swaps in the last couple months I've decided to keep this screen and use the phone as is.
How does your replacement screen compare to the original one?
I got LG performed a "total refurbished" when I dropped and shattered my screen.
It came back and looked like new, no difference to the original.
After a shattered screen i got it replaced.two months waoting time.now have jdi panel but brightness is very low and have lots of screen bleed around the edges.the repairman did not do a good job but the panel itself is of lower quality.color and contrast ok but luminosity is about 70%of the original...not happy but no money for yet another panel...
Conclusion:dont drop the phone...
After having touch screen issues on my phone (no-touch zone, ghost touches), I bought a replacement screen for my D800 off eBay.
Got it replaced and so far, the quality (colours, brightness, touch accuracy) is very good. I'd say the screen is slightly more yellow than my original screen but it's by no means an issue.
The screen I got for my "new" Z3, is full of problems. It has press marks(areas on the screen which appear brighter/whiter) and the screen "flickers" on high brightness. My friend can't see it well, but I can very clearly see the screen going bright->dark->bright->dark slightly and very quickly.
Dropped mine and got it replaced at a cheap place in Bangkok.
Colours are the same, viewing angles are not as good, but
those doesn't matter to me.
Been 2 months dropped phone again, screen shattert again...
Biggest supprise: Touch is still working perfectly! Seems like the cheap replacement screen doesn't have the NoGap technology like the original ones haha. Seems like win win to me!

Thanks for the responses guys and sorry to hear about your screens.
Made a new poll. Please participate.
I'm trying to make a case that there are different versions of LCD panels made by different manufacturers.
They don't advertise which is which but we're starting to notice now that we're having out screens replaced.
I replaced my LG D800 screen with one from Amazon and the colors are slightly darker but other than that no big deal. I didn't do a good job with the replacement so there is definite light bleed on the edges and after four months of using it im getting ghost touches if I press on the lower portion of the screen. Don't think it's quite worth the $80 replacement to try again and get it right, just something I'll deal with until a new phone comes out and I can get it replaced all together.
Similar experience to laboratik except the repair was done at LG so the workmanship is good. But it is jdi panel and darker than the original.
Thank you guys for the responses. This thread should be helpful to others in our same situation.
The sad fact is that the market is flooded with aftermarket screens made by who knows.
Just compared my screen with the S6 Edge and have to say I'm very impressed with the image and color on this replacement screen however that's where the buck stops.
The reduced viewing angles are tolerable at best. I'd hate to remove this replacement screen send it back all over again...roll, dice pray I get a perfect match but unless I'm removing it from a G2 myself I'm starting to believe it's not likely it'll happen.
Check out this review on Amazon re: the screen I have.
This guy nails my current situation

I got a few of them from eBay, I can link you the buyer if you want, I've sold them and they are close to OEM, they only have one MAJOR flaw, they are thicker. While you'd think this wouldn't be an issue, they are thick enough to not be able to slip into most cases, so it's annoying.

That's the ebay seller I use for replacement parts.
So far the screens have been OEM quality( G2, GPro, AHD) I've bought a few from there, and they all have great quality, except for the thickness, they all seem to be thicker, this is probably due to it not being real gorilla glass, and just a knock off lol.
it looks like my replacement screen for LG service center has slightly lower sunlight legibility than original,
I dont know which panel is this, but brightness is reduced

After removing the Amazon screen and reinstalling the original one, I notice the Amazon one has slightly higher ppi/contrast with a smoother looking picture....WTH
Now if I can have that with the original screen's viewing angles I'd be golden....
Oh well....time to pack it back and return it back...will report back shortly

Hye guys. Im sorry if im in the wrong thread. Right now im in need for lg g2 d802 lcd full assembly replacement but im in tight budget right now. I can afford max for 60 bucks. ( im still depressed about losing my job though lol ) I've found several replacement at ebay from China that is under my budget but im in doubt if it is quality enough to be acceptable to be use in this great phone? I've heard about "crazy touch" issue too so im afraid if im not lucky enough to get one of those. Anyone here have experienced with these full lcd assembly from ebay? That one almost certainly looks like it will be a low quality replacement you will be unhappy with.
My personal opinion, if you want a full frame screen replacement....at least get one with the LG logo.
Saw one on ebay for 59.00 last night. The seller claimed to test them before they ship.
