has anyone looked into the possibility or upgrading the LCD in these to a higher quality one? that would solve many of my issues with the device. I see they have been researching this on the gtablet forum but search didnt find any information on this site for the 101....
anyone know enough about this to recommend a plug n play replacement?
Never done it on a tablet, but on a laptop you typically want to aim for the same or lesser resolution unless the video supports higher (on this would have to be exact same resolution probably) and you want a backlight that has similar power characteristics. Then you need the frame to be the exact same physical size, frame and thickness included. Good luck, lemme know what yah find id like a nice IPS or S-IPS in mine.
Hi, a normal laptop 1024x600 resolution 10.1 panel will work, it used standard connections. I have tried that with a pixel qi. It works but no touch obviously. However the capacitive touch panel is stuck on the screen so you will need to purchase an extra touch panel to stick on top of the lcd screen you will buy. However i dont think there is any ips 10.1 inch screens. These are made customely for devices i believe.
At its most expensive it is a $350 device (101 - 16GB). Completely not worth it financially to upgrade the LCD. You would be better off spending that money to buy a Adam with the Pixel Qi screen if you were so inclined to have a higher quality capacitive screen. It would probably cost less too.

at 1.5lbs and $500 ill pass on the adam. you can purchase better lcds for ~$100 thats still cheaper than the adam also... but finding that the touch panel is glued to the lcd kinda ruins this idea. oh well CES next week will have plenty of alternatives to the 101 im sure

I'm reading this part of forum since a while and I know different pros and cons
of Folio 100, which can be solved mostly by custom rom installation.
But since now I'm finally wondering whether to buy this device or not,
I would like to ask you about quality of it's screen.
I've heard a lot of Folio 100 screen bad angles and it's general
poor quality image, but in the other hand I've heard that this screen is the
same like in the Archos 101 Tablet (which could be my other choice).
And since you all are already using this device, I would like to
know what is your personal opinion and is it really so bad?
Besides all other specs of Folio 100 (maybe not the weight
make it quite worth spending ~540$ for it.

Build quality is not so great, and probably you will have some problems... but for the price is kind of good deal... check for gaps on the screen, around the edges.
The screen is bright enought and constrast is fair. The only thing is not so good is viewing angle, but still if you use it for personal use (not to share with other) is quite enough.
I also thought about the archos 101... but when you look at the hw specs (512 MB ram instead of 256, Dual core cpu vs singel core cpu)... the folio wins imo, the image quality and view angles could be better, but for my use (mostly internet (nice flash performance), working with documents, vpn, rdp and ssh connections, (video) conferencing, watching quick video's, music) it's great...
and the build quality, to me it doesn't feel cheap, it's a good deal for the price...
Software is not really an issue, it's fully functional with some little issues when you use FolioMod 1.4...
I still haven't had the chance to get my hands on an archos 101, but I heard that you can feel the screen "bump in" when you press it? something the folio doesn't have, it's just a solid surface which is very sensitive... Also I heard the edges aren't that nice when holding it, the folio had nice rounded edges... Like I said, this is from what I've heard...
I have been using the Folio for about a week now, and both the view angle and the build quality are good. I have no problems when reading a pdf or playing a game.
Screen for personal use is still quite ok. For reading it is fine, but when I read in dark room with black backround(portrait orientation) it starts to reflect a bit, which I do not like.
Overall this is a good PERSONAL device. Also found one German review where Folio screen was marked as having better quality than the one on Archos 101 IT
Considering slower cpu and less ram - archos is losing here
However build quality may still be a question.

And now Im new Folio 100 user, but unfortunately Ive already found two bugs (Im using Folio Mod 1.4) which Ive read about in other posts:
- folio is waking up from standby,
- device hangs up frequently during normal use,
Besides above its quite nice device, even screen is ok for me

You must be joking, right?
Build quality is poor. If you play close attention you will see that most of the screws are loose and you have a 1-2 mm gap on the right low corner of the screen glass... this will make very easy to break the glass when pressing
If you consider that most of the countries don't have local repair centers, this means that will have to wait several months to have it fixed.
I recommend everyone to check for defects before buying. Specs wise folio is certain a good deal, but you should pay attention to this details...
In my case screen, especially the gap between glass and plastic is the same in each part of screen, and when I slide my finger gently I feel that glass part is a litttle bit lower than plastic part - each place same.
I've paid attention to this when I was buying my device.
But again it has only few days and I hope it want change within time.
Regarding my previous information about wakes & hangs up, it seems I've partial solution. I've installed REGPON wifi KeepAlive app from market - which keeps wifi alive in standby mode and it looks like now everything is fine (expect a bit shorter battery life).
I've read that this can be solution in someone other post, so it's not my idea.

I am debating between the G tablet and Nook Color since price is similar. I went to Office Depot and looked at the G tablet, though the ceiling lights in there give some glare, it was hard to make an overall judgement on the screen in there. I don't think I found it that bad. I can see the horsepower this has over the Nook color might be something I will like, I like tinkering with stuff (my pc overclock, my old windows mobile 6.5 wing overclocked etc) so modding I am not scared of.
I read about people disliking the screen.. Is it really that bad? From you owners, does it bother sometimes or is it really no big deal?
I am thinking I will use it on plane flights and in hotels, as well as leisure etc.. i do want to play games though and general multimedia.
Also are there some screen protectors and cases that fit it?

Yes, the viewing angles are a pain to deal with. Depending on how you plan on looking at it will determine how you hold it (landscape) either camera up or camera down. The stock rom won't let the screen rotate so you will have to find one that does. I'm typing on it now, btw.
Back to the screen; the colors get washed out easily and gets frustrating. Also, the touchscreen sensitivity is ****ty. Gtablet for dummies has 2 fixes for this, though, so that's a start.
I just really hope Google releases source on honeycomb and viewsonic releases the drivers to take advantage of the tegra2

I ordered a screen protector off from ebay. I haven't had any trouble with it. However I don't believe it has improved the screen at all.
An interesting note the package on the protector said it was for the Acer Iconia, but it still fits (quite tightly) with a cutout for the camera. I'm not sure if the dimensions are exactly the same... Perhaps someone can confirm this?

Yes, it's really that bad. It's a netbook screen, which means its meant to be viewed dead on center left/right, in landscape, at (and this is the real killer) about a 30 degree angle.
In dark settings its fine, but you have to hold it (no reading flat on a table, unless you like leaning over the table) and no portrait reading, so using it as an ebook is, er, less than satisfying.
I suggest you NEVER look at a real tablet screen that was actually designed for easy viewing from many different angles.
Other than that, it's fantastic.
My gTab's viewing angles are just as bad as everyone else's and I rarely care. Also, when the kids and I are watching YouTube or other videos, the tablet is in landscape and three of us can watch side by side with only minor impact due to the viewing angles.
I would rather have an IPS screen but for me price is a big factor; then again, I just bought a used table saw at GoodWill for $37, so that's the kind of shopper I am. If you don't mind the viewing angles go for it, but better tablets are always coming out so today's IPS tablets may be marked down very soon.

Hilarious and pretty damn close to what I think. However, I use mine on a stand at just the right angle and have no issues.

If you do want the thing to be a capable book reader, get the Nook. It is flashable with better ROMs and is designed for ebooks.
I originally thought I would use my Gtablet for them, but learned better about 10 pages into the first one.
My Kindle is perfect for it though as is the Nook.
BTW, I got the Skinomi full skin (woodgrain) and it came with the screen protector. Works great and looks amazing.
I've own/ed both a nook color and a gtab. The nook screen is nicer. Plain and simple. Better viewing angles, the picture seems more vivid, its just all around nice. That being said, I still sold my nook color for a gtab and would make the same decision again in a heartbeat.
The thing is, if you want an ereader, the nook color is the clear winner. But if you want that tablet experience (like I did) and are looking to the nook color for it, its going to leave you wanting. I rooted my nc, threw CM7 on it, over clocked it, remapped the hardware buttons, everything you can tinker with I did. But as great as it was, its still never really felt like a real tablet. I enjoyed the portability, but the 7inch screen felt a bit cramped.
The Gtablet on the other hand gives you the better tablet experience. Yes the viewing angles on the screen are bad, but honestly, its never once been a concern of mine. You have to hold the tablet anyway right? So whats the difference between rotating your wrist a couple of degrees to get a better viewing angle? Its not as big of a problem as everyone makes it out to be. The only time i could see it becoming a problem is if you're laying in bed and want to lay it relatively flat on your stomach or something, then the screen would cause issues. The angles are as bad as people say, but its really not a problem in day to day use. When I use a device I lookat it straight on, so the viewing angle doesn't bother me. I don't understand how everyone seems to be using their tablet in a super tilted manner. Plus if you buy a Clip Case, you can adjust the viewing angle when you set your tablet down on a table or something. I also bought a tablet stand for when I want to use the gtab as an extra monitor in portrait mode.
My point is, if the screen is the ONLY deciding factor between the two for you, then you should go with the nook color. But in all honesty, if you look at each product overall, the gtab is a much better choice if you want a tablet.
You just have to make sure you get rid of the crap software that comes loaded on the gtab for one of the roms here (gtabcomb is really nice). How that piece of crap software was allowed to make it to market is beyond me. Whoever is in charge of quality control needs to be fired yesterday.

Yeah I went to bestbuy and looked at the NC and then drove down to office depot and looked at the gtablet and thought it wasn't bad.
Im sure it will give me some good entertainment as well on flights. Just gotta see how soon my dad can order it for me. he owes me some money and I said just get me a tablet . =)
My pc is overclocked, videocard is volt modded and watercooled. I don't mind putting in a little work =)
Since I have 3 tablets and one being a NC running CM7, I can compare the NC and G-tablet closely.
The screen on the NC is sharp and vivid, the only reason I got another 10" tablet is the viewing area.
The screen on the gtablet is not as sharp as the NC and the color is not as vivid, viewing angle is worst then my other 2 tablets, but it is fast and big so I use it instead of my laptop for net access while I am in Starbuck and out of the house. The NC is what I use sitting on the sofa or in bed

I'm comparing the screen colors of Sony Tablet S with same images or web pages with (for example) an "old" HTC HD2. Sony Tablet S colors are more pale, washed-out, faded. I also compared with samsung tablet.
I expected something more from sony.
Screen is all in a tablet.
Also brightness is lower (i have also removed the protection screen.
Which is your opinion?

The brightness is lower but a better light, because of the blacklight stuff it will
prevent sunlight to make your screen dark, you can use you tablet outside,
with Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 your screen goes almost black you can't see a
thing with the Sony Tablet S you can,
The worst part of the tablet is the sides, trying to pull out an sd it will, but its
hard, the sloppy plastic thing that must protect the usb and sd port for dust,
very dissapointing, easiest way is to cut it off the tablet but thats ugly so you
wont do something like that also the plastic on the back, not quite beautifull,
and yes the screen, it issn't made of gorilla glass so it is easy to break it, there
are a few points where other tablets has there better stuff, but about the
screen light, its allot more usefull outside then other tabs

I've actually been really rather impressed with my Sony's screen in terms of colors, contrast and clarity, so I'm not sure if you perhaps have a dodgy unit. The brightness is certainly lower than the Samsung, but in my opinion the TruBlack display on the Sony is definitely clearer and has better colours than the Galaxy Tab. Just my 2 cents, naturally.

Hello all.
My gorilla glass on my prime is cracked. And I know I could get it replaced by Asus. My question is since they are going to do a full diagonistic on my prime.
Could they replace the LCD screen to the TF700? I mean would that be even possible.
unlikely. If you ever opened a laptop different screens have different "pinouts" as it were for graphics, power, etc. and there are pages of what are called datasheets explaining the peticulars of the screens. Now you CAN replace similar screens from, lets say an HP laptop into an Acer laptop if they are compatable, or a similar run of differently specd laptops may have the same screen module in them. It makes it easier to do repairs.
However on the tablets there is less standardization. A screen module in, say, the iciona tab wont work in the transformer and vice versa. They are too specialized.
If you could somehow get the datasheets for each screen and rewire the connectors to match properly you would also have to code your own linux drivers and insert them into android just so the tab knows what to do with the screen.
That being said there is one ray of hope: Asus being asus they MAY keep compatability between the three transformer screens, meaning the piniouts and specs might be similar enough that you could replace the 700 screen with one from a 300 or the other way around, the only real way to test is to actually try it.
However you run into other issues too, these things are designed so compact that everything is glued / screwed into the screen or casing. If you open a 300 you will notice it is very different construction than the 201, and since the 700 isnt out yet who knows how they will make that one.
Basically, short answer is no, like 98% but im ok with the screen on the prime its good enough for me.
