if the story is true and Motorola releases their XOOM / Everest tablet in 4 days, and its up to me.. ill be porting the honeycomb 3.0 to our tablet very,very fast..
at least its told here, its released with android honeycomb 3.0 but since Nvidia havent even posted their SDK for 3.0 on the tegra2 site, im not sure how reliabe it really is.. but lets just hope its true..

if motorola is able to show the honeycomb running on their tegra2 tablet (or least saying it is) somehow the 3.0 is maybe only used internally now?
i don't think any video actually show the "version" number on their tablets, they're not like the community bragging alot showing release os pages or snaps

I think Motorola and Google are working together on this. Motorola has access to the Honeycomb tree which has not been released to the public.
This is not uncommon in android history, as the Xoom will be the flagship device for Honeycomb, they have access to the source earlier.
This is the same as with he Motorola Droid and 2.0 or the Samsung Nexus S with 2.3

This should be available soon! Google is talking in terms of weeks, and there's too many rumors and sneakpeaks to be a false positive!
The software for 3.0 will be retro compatible with earlier versions of android, but should take advantage of larger screens and faster processors.
We should remember that iPad 2 is to be release in February and Google must antecipate this in order to take the lead.
Toshiba is not very clear about folio 100 future update or not, and if it will be able to run honeycomb (except for processor part), but since toshiba is planning to release new tablet, personally I think it's gonna be only Gingerbread 2.3 for our folio 100, but I hope I'm wrong!!
The only hope for our folio 100 is xda dev forum and dexter
also folio 100 screen is not the best screen comparing to others cheap tablets, too bad from big company named Toshiba.

Google's new Android Honeycomb tablet OS will require a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor to run properly, said Bobby Cha, managing director of Korean consumer electronics firm Enspert.
That means that many existing Android tablets will not be upgradeable to Honeycomb, as they lack the processor necessary to meet the spec. Currently, Nvidia's Tegra 2 platform is the only chipset in products on the market to include a Cortex-A9, although other manufacturers have said they're moving to the new processor architecture for 2011 products.
A 1,280x720 screen resolution may also be necessary, although Cha affirmed that "Honeycomb does not require 10-inch [screens] ... it's going to go as small as 7 inch."

If this is true, Google will have two parallel software paths for tablets, at least for a while. With their Cortex-A8 processors and 1,024x600 screens, the popular Samsung Galaxy Tab line of Android tablets run the "Froyo" version of Android, 2.2, and can be updated to Gingerbread, 2.3, but not to Honeycomb.

This could be true, but i don't think they will stick to a single screen resolution! From what i understand resolution is not the main issue, cpu and memory is. In the 2.3 we already have support for different screen resolution, i don't think 3.0 will be different.
I don't now about you people, but I really don't count on Toshiba.
1% chance that toshiba will keep supporting this tablet, 99% chance that people like Dexter will keep supporting the folio. (my opinion^^)
Before the folio I had bought a toshiba laptop for my little brother, it is a fine laptop and prece-quality it deserves an A+, but after the folio... I don't think i will ever buy something from toshiba again...

TechRadar is revealing some rumors that honeycomb will in fact be 2.4 and not the 3.0 we are expecting. I believe that this could be true because they still have to support the recently launched tablets.
Android 3.0 could be a lot different from android we know and require more specific hardware to run.

2.3 -> Gingerbread update for all devices
2.4 -> Honeycomb -> Gingerbread codebase with tablet modifications
3.0 -> unification of both versions, new codebase

This is good news, if we manage to port the firmware I mean.
I also don't believe that toshiba will update the android version on Folio. They could release some update with Flash within, but they will not spend to much time supporting this "old tablet". This is in my opinion very very sad, and if you compare this with Apple you start to think that despite being more expensive iPad could in fact be a better deal.
The good news is that android is opensource and we could trust in the community aid.

i honestly think the hardware do have minor bugs, which Toshiba knows and don't want to continue the relationship with that company so the new tablet is probably made by someone else and with better display.
but yes foundation was actually quite ok when it got modded
I agree that hardware wise Folio is quite a good deal (if you ignore the lousy LCD screen).

From a hardware perspective or our folio is good enough to hande honeycomb. 512 ram and a Tegra 2 (reference for it rumored).
And looking at the specs of the new ta let it's just a folio with a new screen. But time will tell!
Any more details on Honeycomb? I can't wait to see it running on my Folio!

I think everyone is waiting for Honeycomb to be properly released by Google.
Since the same Tegra 250 platform which is used by the Folio 100 also is used as the reference platform when developing Honeycomb I think there will be no problem running Honeycomb on our Folio 100.
Even if Toshiba doesn't propose Honeycomb for our Folio 100, it's easy to compile a custom version. The only problem is NVidia being really slow to release sources and their "blobs"
I'm not sure if it's possible to mix Honeycomb custom version and blobs from Froyo. I tried to compile kernel from Tegra Gingerbread branch and some NVidia .h files are missing (related to OpenMAX) However, it's possible to comment out theses new changes (mainly to support .avi, .wmv and .asf videos playback).

most of us use the folio occasionally if not mostly to watch videos. native support for these things are quite important!
Honeycomb will be a great nice to have OS for our tablet, but I am fine with froyo as long it support the upcoming games.

Android 2.3+ will be needed for upcoming games because there are a lot of now native API exposed (OpenSL ES, EGL, etc...) and these games are using them, but like mentioned by a Google developer, Android 3.0 is 99% similar to Android 2.3
Yes I believe that 2.3+ will be the logic aproach for folio. I must say that honeycomb, apart for some fancy graphic effects didn't impress me much.
More important are support for games and apps and of course speed. I'm sure that the most if not only important APIs are already in place with 2.3.
This makes me remember when Vista hit the market, fancy graphics, better gizmos, but after all most people stay with XP and get seven instead.
At core level 2.3 is possible the same as 3.0, but it sure will miss the problems that the gizmos and fancy graphics will bring.
Like every new software it need aging to get the better possible performance output. This is why space shuttles computers don't get last OS versions . After all they are made to fly to the star without exploding or crashing not to have fancy new gizmos.
In my option tablets are like space travel machines if they crash to much they are useless This is specially true for phones, I had a few dozen of mobile phones, but I still use my first nokia when I'm oncall, this is because battery last longer and it doesn't crash all the time.
Lets hope I'm wrong and 3.0 would be a great and solid OS right out of the box.
We also shouldn't forget that the sucessor of Win CE and apple iOS 4.3 are on there way and Google is rushing up to get it on time.
If apple's new iPad get the new A5 and 4.3 iOS with a camera and more costumization features, before 3.0 arrives Google is in deep trouble! Even for those who don't like Apple, this the new iPad will be a eye catcher!

I mean it looks cool, but I refuse to buy a new tablet every year. So I'll probably use my Gen8 101 until it dies and look for a new tablet whenever that happens. Right now it is just a consumption device anyway. Web surfing, e-mail, eBooks, etc...no need to get something new.
Exactly. Its not necessary to have these things constantly upgraded and driving up the price to own one. The point of a tablet was a smaller, cheaper, lighter alternative to a netbook for basic usage such as e-books, web surfing, email, etc.(Personal favorite use for my Archos A101T 16GB has been as a digital comic reader, thousands of my digital comics all in one place and the form factor is perfect scale for comics) as well as a decent portable media device. All the additions that they are making, are bells and whistles that won't dramatically improve my current experience.
For Gen 10 I bet they'll be using something like Tegra 3 with quad core configured Cortex A9, or maybe even A15 Eagle?
I think I'll pick one up in the summer as I currently don't have any devices. Biding my time :3

Gen9 better have at LEAST 1GB of RAM in order to stay competitive. There's no point having a fast processor if all you can do is run one app at a time...
Now that I sold my Gen8, I might consider one of these, but I think I learned a valuable lesson venturing into the tablet world. First, the tablet needs to be at least marginally future-proofed. In other words, come from a manufacturer with a good track record of updating the OS...OR....not use locked down proprietary crap so that devs like those on XDA can cook up newer ROMS. Second, it has to have the hardware to support not only the current generation of OS, but preferably what is anticipated for the next generation or two. So at least 1024mb of RAM, 32-64GB storage, dual-core processor with decent speed, etc.
So we will see how the Gen9's look when they really do come out.
The thing I like most about Archos is their media support though. They absolutely kill the competition on media support...which is pretty important when you look at this kind of device (at least for me).
I think it is more likely to have 2.3 that 3.0

Hey there,
Have some confidence. It was a big battle between the community and nvidia to support the older tegra 2 procs and we won on that. Now the only thing that we are waiting on is google to release the AOSP for Honeycomb to 3rd party this way Viewsonic can get their devs working on a stable OS for our tablets. This all takes time and it will come thru.

This isn't even remotely surprising, is it? The bridge android tablet devices that predate the official Google release of a tablet-based version of Android (ie, Honeycomb) were orphans from the start. Just enjoy it for what it is, or sell it and move on to the next big thing. It's likely that gingerbread (already happening), and honeycomb (if that source ever gets released) will be unofficially supported in time.
If your Gtab does what you want it to, why not enjoy it? If it doesn't, then happily move away from it.

Exactly. The tablet market is moving fast, and in a few months everything currently on the market is going to be obsolete. If the gTab works well now -- and mine definitely does -- replacing it immediately just out of spite to ViewSonic doesn't seem to make much sense.
I'll wait till the next generation of processing hardware comes out ... by then, Honeycomb might actually be ready for prime time.

What do you mean our developers are moving forward? If you mean buying other tablets, yes probably. Because most of the "devs" are tech freaks haha.
As far as I'm concerned, Viewsonic or Nvidia had nothing to do with the progress that our current devs have made with the Gtablet Roms. My faith is in them not Viewsonic or Nvidia.
Also, if you've seen the dev section there have been updates up the ying yang with the CM ROM, the kernels, Vegan and even Roebeets ROMS. Roebeet was the one that had the most concern with the lack of viewsonic support because his TNT ROM was based on Viewsonic's base rom. That's why I understood his frustration. However, as of late he has moved to the Vega build just like Gojimi with his Brilliant Corners ROM. So I think he will have more room to mod since he isn't as reliant on Viewsonic.
So yes, eventually the devs will move on but for now I do not see that they have abandoned the gtablet. All the early players are still updating their ROMs with the exception of Rothnic. I wonder how he's doing.
As for honeycomb, wait until google releases the AOSP. Do you think that the CM team, Gojimi, Roebeet, etc won't try to put honeycomb on the gtablet?!?! They won't be able to resist. They are devs and modders, it's in their DNA.

Gingerbread has been raging since December and there aren't many phones who've gotten updates yet until recent. There are still high end phones coming out with froyo. I don't see GB or HC coming to the VS anytime soon.

I've learned since buying an Android device that relying on the manufacturer to bring updates is stressing. So I will not buy a product unless it is capable of being rooted. I'm just glad the gtab received official support from the CM team. They figure out some crazy stuff over there at a faster rate than the actual manufacturers. And not too mention the XDA devs too!

Your actually incorrect on that June/July we will have source codes for Harmony gingerbread drivers from there we can move forward to further advance our tablets. LG is working on a 2.3.4 release for the Optimus 2x harmony platform which Nvidia has to support and develop for.

And since Ice Cream is a hybrid of the phone and tablet, let just hope some Genius dev. here will put out a rom version for out Gtablet

Agreed. I wish I was genius enough to help out but unfortunately I know very little about Linux ! Being a Windows user myself.
My expectations are lower, I hope they release IceCream for a similar device so some awesome devs can make it mostly work on the gTab.

Maybe this will help. The OTA updater is not controlled by ViewSonic, and the 4349 update was pulled, apparently because there were issues with that version.
In the last three weeks, we have been trying to clear up erroneous information in regards to our support, nVidia, and the OTA. We are still working on some of these issues.
FACT - nVidia is only supporting Gingerbread and Honeycomb on their Ventana platform. gTablet will NOT see drivers or Android upgrades beyond Android 2.2 from ViewSonic. ViewSonic has had direct conversations with nVidia about this issue.
OTA Update: We are still awaiting a response from Flex regarding authorization for TNT. We will post information regarding this issue, when we learn more.
There it is again, no drivers, no android updates past Froyo = no official Honey or Ice Cream from Viewsonic!!!!

So, what exactly is the truth? Nvidie told us that they would provide support on all versions of android that a hardware partner (including Viewsonic) requests until that hardware partner (including Viewsonic) chooses not to support the device.
But, not Viewsonic (hardware partner) states that Nvidia will only support Gingerbread and Honeycomb on the Ventana platform. Viewsonic is showing that they are not "choosing to not support their device, and that they have made an attempt to request support for the the hardware from Nvidia.
Basic questions here:
Did Viewsonic contact Nvidia to attempt to get hardware support above Android 2.2 for the Gtablet?
Will Nvidia stay true to their comment and provide support for ALL android versions at the request of the hardware partner?
If Viewsonic did request such support, and Nvidia has pledged to provide such support for ALL android versions, then why would Viewsonic tell their Gtablet users that Nvidia will not support any android version above 2.2 for the Harmony platform?
I can certainly say that Viewsonic Gtablet OWNERS are a little more than sick and tired of the runaround that we're getting. We are upset at Viewsonic, many of us beginning a boycott campaign. I personally, have pledged to provide negative comments in reviews of ALL Viewsonic products on various online retailer sites. I won't be reviewing products, but rather product support and customer service. It wouldn't be too difficult to do the same to Nvidia products as well. When the Tegra 3 is released, will support for all Tegra 2 devices (not just harmony) be cut off as well? Will the Xoom, Iconia, EEE pad, etc, not have official drivers for Ice Cream Sandwich, or other, yet to be determined, Android versions? That could be a lot of potential negativity for a publicly traded company. I'm sure that stockholders wouldn't appreciate it.
Please respond in kind to these questions, and let me know in the most basic terms. Will Tegra 2 Harmony devices ever get support from Nvidia for any Android version above 2.2? I don't want corporate double speak, a simple yes or no answer will suffice.

Now, how about Malata & Adam Inc, Vegan ??? Are there any light out of the tunnel for them, specially Adam & Vaga as they are pushing Honeycomb development forward ... We will see the true until Google release the HC source code, if that nvidia will release it driver for the HC harmony too ... if not than it's time to boycott both Google for being a big fat cow and nvidia & VS for it noncooperation

Unfortunately, companies can & do change their tune on a regular basis. Just because NVidia said they would support Harmony doesn't mean they actually will or haven't changed their minds. Maybe the next step is badgering NVidia to support their product!!! Sounds like the ball is in NVidia's ball park & it's up to them if we will get to play!
nVidia & Viewsonic want to force us to buy NEW devices. Too bad you have not even had it for a year and support is gone! Heck Apple is still supporting the original iPad and Touch products!
The full potential of our gTabs has not even been scratched and and it is being treated like a Touchpad. Makes me sick

Viewsonic, the company that has their name plastered on the back of our tablets, has let us know that they are not going to be upgrading them to any Android OS higher than 2.2. They claim that it's because Nvidia (the company that created the Tegra 2 platform has said they will not provide hardre drivers for any android os higher than 2.2 on the harmony (ours) platform, and will only to it for the Ventana (Xoom, Iconia, Transformer).
However, there are some talented 3rd party developers here, and at the tabletroms forums that are working as hard as they can to attempt to get honeycomb to run on the harmony devices (Gtablet Vega, Adam). They have been able to port android 3.0 to them, but there are parts missing, namely hardware acceleration and the camera. Unless these developers start implementing portions of android 3.2 (which I believe some are) then you can't get it. There will never be an official android 3.2 update for our devices. What we'll probably end up with is an android 3.0 with aspects of 3.1 and 3.2, since htey'll be "updated" manually, but they will still lack drivers for hardware acceleration.

I'm sorry for the noob question but what is so different with both platform? Also why is Nvidia not supporting Harmony? Also is that why I could not find the darn APX drivers on Nvidia website? Also what will happen when Ice Cream Sandwich will come out since it will be open source?

This is a point of contention for some, including myself. Back in April, when we first started complaining to Viewsonic, they told us that Nvidia would not support any OS higher than 2.2 for the Harmony chipset. We then complained to Nvidia, who stated, publicly that they would support their hardware on any OS at the request of the hardware partner (Viewsonic in this case) The argument then died down, until just recently.
We then started bothering Viewsonic again to "request" the drivers for GB and HC, since they are the hardware partner, and Nvidia said they would support it. A few weeks ago, Viewsonic stated that they had communnicated with Nividia and were told that Nividia would not support an OS higher than 2.2 on the Harmony chipset (sound familiar?)
I, personally, doubt that Viewsonic ever made such request. Others state that Nvidia did a corporate double speak, saying that they would support a higher OS, but never saying that they would provide drivers for such an OS. The fact is, we don't have a higher OS, so there's nothing really, for them to support...see what I'm saying?
In any case, Viewsonic makes us mad at Nvidia and Nvidia makes us mad at Viewsonic...nothing ever gets resolved, and we're still pissed.

Ah thanks for clearing that up but the difference between Harmony and Ventana can't just be RAM since the Acer Iconia A100 only has 512MB of RAM and it runs Android 3.2. Oh well lets just hope Nvidia releases drivers for Ice-Cream Sandwich. I'm also pissed that Viewsonic is releasing two Honeycomb tablets.

I would love 3.2 just for reasizeable Widgets. EVen though viewsonic abandoned this tablet I don't care. I will never buy anything viewsonic again as i would be pissed if i spent $300 on a tablet that has been forgotten about by its makers. But $170 for a used dual core honeycomb tablet is pretty damn hard to beat(even if it is 3.0 and a little buggy). So far i am loving this tablet. Now only if electroniccrap would re-stock the bluto.

For the most part it ran fine. The camera didn't work and I experienced the sleep of death.
Currently I am running a cm7.1 rc1 located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1144847
Again for the most part everything runs fine. A few minor things changed like the location of the sdcard. Not sure why but I don't have any audio so I can't play any music. No FC anywhere and the new market runs well.

The version of a ROM is not indicitive of the version of the OS that it's based on. I'm pretty sure that ALL HC roms available for the Gtablet are based on a 3.0 version of HC, they may have different aspects of 3.1 and 3.2 built in, but they are mostly 3.0.
The camera foes not work on ANY HC rom for the Gtablet, neither does hardware acceleration (trust me, HA does NOT work on ANY HC rom)

Your talking about the VegaComb 3.2 with the hardware acceleration? If so as far as I know no one is porting it I asked the VegaComb team and none of them have a Gtablet. Id like to see someone like Robeet port it over but doesn't look like that's gonna happen.
Started into the world of Android on a Gtab myself by getting on (full $400 price) at Sears many moons ago. Loved it. Messed it up. Figured out how to restore it (along with XDA gurus!) and generally enjoyed the whole process. Found VEGAN to be my ROM of choice and went happily on my way.
Then the tablet explosion began.
Despite entreaties by many it would appear (at least to me) some time ago the Gtab is EOL. End Of Life merely means it, along with many other tabs are now declared abandoned by their respective manufacturers who are moving on to newer offerings. One sees this with all things tech including phones, desktops, OS, etc.
I really don't mean to sound like a curmudgeon, but if it weren't for talented devs like Robeet, et. al., we'd not see massaged ROMs we do even now. Got a feeling the Gtab is like the NookColor and other first gen tabs. Froyo, GB and perhaps a handful of modded ROMs based on the previous is going to be it. Which ain't bad but not the same.

That's only partly true. The mod community is still here and someone figured out how to get hardware acceleration working on the Advent Vega and there's no telling what will happen when Ice Cream Sandwich gets released. Sure Viewsonic gave up on it but they still support it (contrary to HP).
You make a valid point, chum. Never underestimate the imagination and talent of a dedicated developer! People have done some amazing things with tablets and will continue to do so. That said, a "wait and see" position while perhaps not all that encouraging, might indeed yield some extremely useful projects.
Time will tell!
