I want, and need to unroot my phone because, it drops wireless connections, it doesn't like connecting to routers, and I need to send it back. Right now its rooted with Cyanogen and ClockworkMod. Can I just reflash the stock Android 2.1 by AT&T, and uninstall clockwork, and unroot it, then reflash and reroot at a later time, or will this update it to an unhackable state (like xbox sysem updates) please let me know before I ruin anything.
I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I will restore my nandroid backup from my SD card and then use the stock ROM RUU from shipped stocks dot com. It will replace everything including the clockwork recovery. You need to restore the original nandroid image or the stock ROM will not identify the right signature and region thus not allowing the flash.
Good luck

Not to be a jerk, but just search for it. There are atleast like 4 threads I can think of that give step by step intructions on how to unroot.

go post somewhere useful, i did search, and they said OTA updates, and i basically want to know if i can use the 2.1 exe on the htc site.
for ATT Aria on Windows machine, go into Aria Development forum, click on "Official Sticky Rollup Thread" and find a link to the "Guide Aria Superthread". in this guide you will find all that you need

I never had to restore the original nandroid image; sure it stated for me that it had no clue what it's looking at (lol), but it still identified the phone itself as Aria/Liberty and flashed the original shipped image.

Hi all this is my first post here and I was hoping someone could help me install Villain 2.2 Froyo on my 3UK Hero
If you havn't rooted already then you're gonna need to go down the goldcard route.. which takes a long time and doesn't always work... just make sure you have a kingston sd card.. the one that comes with the hero doesn't always work and didn't for me. There are plenty of guides around for rooting and installing roms. Once you've done rooting follow these rom updates as the coder is very good and updates frequently http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734149
+1 on the link above. Cronos 2.2 Froyo for GSM hero has been in very active development intensively for a while now and has suddenly gone from being a little unpredictable but showing great promise to being, in my opinion, the best froyo rom for the gsm hero.
I rooted my Hero but when I try and run Titanium Backup it says
"Error-Sorry, I could not acquire root privilages....."
Also when I try and boot into my HTC whilst holding the home key I just get a black screen with an explanation mark inside a triagle ??
Also recovery flash doesnt let me back up it just says
"backup fail: could not run command"

OK. There's a guide here for if you are on 2.1: http://villainrom.co.uk/viewforum.php?f=110
And if on 1.5: http://villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=375
Rememeber to use the Froyd zip file instead of the Villain 5.5 or whatever the guide suggests.
EDIT: and welcome to xda btw, didn't notice it was your first post

Dunno. I mean, I'm hardly impartial on this one But I certainly know that something is in the works over at TeamVillain that might be interesting
But really this is something to work out for yourself. No one ROM is better than another, except in really amazing circumstances. Some people prefer VR12 since it has Sense, while no Froyo hero ROM has Sense. It's all up to your personal preferences.

I don't know when the new one will be ready, so you could try Froyd 1.1.1 for now. The new one will need a full wipe etc, but the current version is perfectly usable, and I've been using it for over a week now.
Run the VillainROM updater once installed, and take the two updates there

No, the updater is in the ROM. And you should be using the guide for 1.5.
And you need to follow the "GoldCard" Procedure as opposed to the other method.
I did the GoldCard procedure yesterday to root my Hero it was a different guide to the link you posted though.
Also when I try to update my Hero drive on my PC it just says there is a better driver already installed it wont let me change it ?
"GoldCard" Procedure
I. Setting up the SDK
I have done this and got my serial
II. Create a “GoldCard” from a MicroSD Card
is this where I should be starting then and ignore everything above this ?
Also windows will not let me update driver ??
adb shell
cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid

Yes Windows 7 64-bit
I forgot to put the space after cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid
so I have entered again and put the space but now I get
No such file or directory
am I being really stupid and missisng something ?
I have also tried using the gold card tool but I get errors there too
So I combined the too I got the CID code from the tool then went to the sites stated on the guide and got the other code and downloaded the HEX tool and did what the guide told me and it let me mount the SD card afterwards does that mean it as worked ? because when I click on the titanium backup program it says
Sorry, I could not acquire root privilages
does this mean I have failed, this is getting really annoying ?

Hmmm. When you finished the hex part of the process, did you get it to connect to your PC properly when in the SD card reader, and could you access the drive letter correctly? If not, you didn't do the goldcard right.
Failing that, you could try and install 2.1, although I'm not sure if 3UK have made an OTA available yet for it. Once 2.1 is in, you can use the faster adb method on it
I am unsure as to what you're doing, but once you made the goldcard, did you then flash the RUU as directed in the guide?

If anyone needs a stock nandroid image (with root),

There is no need to flash this unless you messed up or just want to go back to stock (with root).

DO NOT install it as update.zip . you are supposed to unzip the file after you download it and place the folder called 2010-09-21.18.31.12 in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup then you boot into cwm and goto backup and restore -> restore -> 2010-09-21.18.31.12

Nandroid makes a complete backup of your phone, all your data, apps, everything. It's like it takes a snapshot of your phone, and when you restore it your phone will be back to the exact state of when you made the backup.
The image i posted will take your phone back to what it was like when you pulled it out of the package, except with root. In order to use nandroid, you have to flash the cwm kernel and install the recovery for your phone through rom manager.

Ok, so I am getting my Fascinate tomorrow (can't wait by the way). I have been cruising the forums doing my research before I attempt to root, flash CWM recovery, etc. I am completely unfamiliar with with using Odin, but have used nandroid via Amon's recovery on my Droid Eris (which is running Froyo by the way).
Here's my question: how do I apply this image? Do I have to be rooted first, or can I go ahead and apply this zip and never have to fool with Oden? I just want to be sure I don't make a mistake. Eris development was firmly established by the time I arrived on the scene, so I have not had to worry about these kinds of things. Sorry if this seems like a noob question?

I really appreciate the prompt response. I think I am going to wait until a dev develops a root friendly vzw update. Or I may go ahead and root and wait till then ..... decisions, decisions
I saw where you posted that some Sticky topics need to be compiled, wasupwithuman. I could not agree more. A couple more questions for you (maybe these will help someone else too) .... (1) How stable is CWM on the Fascinate? I read somewhere that it is a duct-taped together recovery that will do for now. Is this true??? (2) Should I just wait for a dev to develop a custom recovery (like Amon's on the Eris), or is CWM stable enough as it currently is? There seems to be some confusion about this from topic to topic. (3) This is unrelated, but has anyone confirmed Wireless Tether working on their Fascinate. I believe I read that it was somewhere else, but would like to know for sure. Thanks again!!!
P.S. - First link is down, but I found another guide on XDA and will probably just follow it (considering it uses adb which I am familiar with from my Eris).

That's incredibly vague. Anyway, you're better off using Amon-RA's recovery for an Eris, ClockWork Mod is known to brick our phones... assuming that's what you're using. Seriously you've given us next to nothing to work with.

Easiest way is to run jcase's 1 Click Eris Root, you can find it on the Market or here
Using Amon is pretty straight forward, just boot into recovery (powering off and power on by VolumeUp+Power/EndCall) the navigation is straight forward, uses trackball. The only thing is it will not see any ROMs inside folders, just keep them at the top on your SD Card

Probably won't work if the ROM on the phone is anything but a stock ROM, as the rooting method relies on a specific "chmod" statement in the boot partition's "init.rc" - most dev ROMs don't have this in there.
I believe that ROM Manager has an option to install an "alternate recovery" (in this case Amon_RA v1.6.2) but I have never used ROM Manager, so don't quote me on that.
There's always this thread, but it may be way more than the OP bargained for. I would sooner tell a newb to just restore the phone back to stock using the "Official" 2.1 MR3 RUU (RUU_Desire_C_Verizon_WWE_2.36.605.1_release_signed_with_driver.exe), and then re-root using jcase's Universal 1 Click Eris Root App Apk thread.

joejoe,
if you are not careful you are going to eff your phone up.
There are a couple of people on this forum that use ROM Manager/Clockwork, but in the past, they have not stepped up to help to people asking about it.
Most of the reasons for that are historical - ROM Manager and ClockworkMod recovery were not available for the Eris as early as Amon_RA's recovery - and early versions of ClockworkMod bricked a number of Eris phones. It probably is a lot more reliable now (on the Eris); but because of that history, most people familiar with Eris rooting methods just continued to use Amon_RA because it worked and behaved reliably.
My recommendation is that you return your phone to stock, and then use the "One Click" app to re-root your phone. At that point you will have Amon_RA on your phone, and you will probably get more help (either here or over on androidforums.com) because there are more people that have that experience with the Eris that can help you out with it.
Either that or you simply need to do quite a bit more reading about how ROM Manager works, what a custom recovery looks like when you are interacting with it manually, etc - it is evident from the questions that you are asking that it is unfamiliar territory for you.
Good Luck

Does anybody have the stock recovery.img file? I cannot find it anywhere and I need to restore it.

As far as I know the stock recovery isn't available though, at least not for the tmobile one. I've found it for the ATT and original HTC one but tmobile's isn't available. Idk if lkimmel7 found or still needs it though.
I still am looking for it... I made the horrible mistake of encrypted my phone using the built in encrypt option in android... and because I have CWM recovery on it, I cannot undue the encryption.. (obviously because my recovery partition cannot read the /data or /sdcard with it being encrypted).
From what I know, the only was for me to get my phone back to normal is to flash the stock recovery, then boot up normally, then use the factory format option from the android menu.
Somebody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

That recovery will not work for a T-Mobile HTC one, I have been trying and trying. Its the same recovery found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2158763 Which also does not work.
I can only assume that it needs to be the carrier specific recovery. The ones above will not actually boot into recovery and if you relock the bootloader it gives a security warning.
Yeah, that recovery doesnt work for me.... and now it's looking like i need to do a full re-flash, but I cannot find all the need .img files..

It is, but the collection doesn't include the 4.4.4 AT&T nandroid.
The nandroids are primarily intended for carrier variants that (for so long) did not have access to RUUs. Every AT&T update has had a corresponding RUU, so you don't see many stock nandroids posted.
RUU may just be easier than hunting down a stock nandroid. Although it depends on what the OP intends to do.
I will see if I did a backup before I thought I did but my luck doubt it.

I'm really trying to get more into helping and knowing so please don't hate me If I'm wrong just help correct me. )
Example for me I'm att cw101. So under the Nandroid TWRP backup area look for the cw101 and download file
I read that you should be as close to stock as possible and I like a fool forgot to copy my nandroid backup of my stock rom to my ext sd card when I re unlocked my bootloader. So you were rooted and on stock rom?

So my question is Nandroid backup the only way to go back to stock. Can you do a ruu
You can definitely use RUU to revert to stock. My PC was having issues running the RUU so I was just trying to restore a nandroid backup of kitkat 4.4.4. I

The nandroid collection thread you linked doesn't have the version the OP is looking for (4.4.4) I already said that. It only has 4.4.2.

Win8 usually causes more issues with RUU than Win7. If your Win7 PC didn't work, it may have been due to USB 3.0 being present (known issue) or a driver issue (very common).
What PC will/will not work is pretty random. My work laptop (Win7) works with no problem. My home PC (also Win7), I needed to uninstall HTC drivers and use "generic" Android MTP drivers to get everything (fastboot, adb, access to internal storage) to work.
It's an alienware area51 7500 (before dell took over) so it's all possible but every thing else worked fine I could connect transfer use adb perfectly. Ruu was only issue
Found this user says it's stock backup. Forgot to copy it one second.

Again, its not the version the OP wants. Android 4.4.4 = software 3.xx. The thread only has 1.xx and 2.xx softwares (4.4.2 and 4.4.3).
Not trying to be contrarian, so hope it doesn't seem that way. I know you mean well.
Like i said im a nooblet.

Yup, understood; and there is nothing wrong with that.
Just trying to point things out, since that is how you will learn.
Its possible that the 4.4.4 nandroid (that the OP wants) is buried somewhere in an existing thread. But I can't recall seeing one posted in the top post of a stock nandroid collection(or similar type thread). The OP's best bet is probably someone to post the nandroid here (and that is what he is asking for).
I could RUU back to 4.4.4 (possible with s-off), make a nandroid and post it. But I don't have time to do that for a while due to kids and business travel. And it would be a significant effort, since then I would then have to RUU back to Lollipop, install TWRP again, and restore back to my current setup. Lots of steps.
I downloaded the 4.4.2 last night. I was on 5.0.2 s-off unlocked rooted. After process was done it asked me if I wanted to install su. I did booted up rooted. What I can do is what you spoke of. I can update to 4.4.4 and then factory reset to get my stuff off and upload. My connection isn't the fastest for upload so it would take some time.

After you update to 4.4.4, in TWRP, I think you can select to just backup the boot and system partitions (and don't select data). Then the nandroid shouldn't contain any personal data, and save you from a factory reset (if that helps at all).
Yeah that would help. Lol
